Message | Paul's Final Farewell

Paul ends his letter to the Ephesians in the same way he ends many of his letters. He specifically asks these brothers and sisters to pray for his boldness while he is in chains for the gospel. He prays…not for people to be saved…but for boldness to complete the mission of preaching the gospel as God has called him to.

We live in the middle of a battlefield. It is sometimes easy to forget it when we are doomscrolling Facebook and shopping for avocados. However, Paul makes it clear that spiritual warfare is an ever-present reality in the life of a Jesus follower. This is his encouragement for us: prepare yourself for battle.

As we see in this text, the truth of the Gospel will impact how children interact with parents, and how parents interact with their kids. Message | Husbands and Wives

Paul, writing to a local body of believers in Ephesus writes, “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”This command isn’t written just to the women, or even to the wives, it is written to the church. Our general disposition toward one another should be one of submission. With that general understanding in mind, Paul moves specifically to speaking to wives and husbands. What he has to say to those in Ephesus would have been a brand new way of thinking, especially for the men.

Message | From Darkness to Light

In this text, Paul continues his call for the people of God to not only believe something different than the rest of the world, but to live in a way that is different from the rest of the world. Paul says those who are outside of Christ are living in darkness, but those in Christ are living in the light. We're so glad you're here! NEW HERE? Message | Among You...Not Even a HINT!

We live in a culture where we are surrounded by people tolerating and celebrating sin. That is not acceptable among the people of God. When someone walks among believers, there should be a palpable difference in what they see, hear, and experience. The question this text makes us ask is: does the standard of holiness among us meet the standard God sets for his people?

Message | Walking in the Way of Love

For most of us, we read texts like this as a checklist of "do’s" and "don’ts." And rightly so! These verses clearly lay out for us in very specific terms how we are to act towards one another. However, we should not see these texts as exhaustive lists of how to act. Instead, they are examples of what it looks like to live out the command of chapter 5 verse 1: following God’s example and walking in love.

Message | A New You?

When you think about your life, is there a difference between your actions and attitudes before you knew Jesus and after? Not just a change in beliefs, but a change in behaviors? As Paul is speaking to these gentile Ephesians, he implores them to turn away from the way they used to live. Paul makes it clear that to live like the “gentiles” is incongruent with following Jesus.

Message | Grow Up Church!

If you are in Christ, you have been given a spiritual gift meant to be used with and for the body of Christ. The big idea of these verses is that the body is made up of many parts, but they are designed to work together. The goal of Paul's exhortation here is that the body would be unified and mature. In the western church, we often see church as an event we attend, instead of a body to which we belong. In a body, every part is important. If one part hurts, the whole body is affected. If one part is missing, the body doesn’t function as it was designed. Do we see the church, and our role in it, with that kind of importance?

Message | Live Worthy

As is often the case in Paul's letters, the first half of the letter is a reminder of the gospel. It is a retelling of who we were before Christ, and who we are in Christ. As we enter into chapter 4, the letter now takes a turn. Paul begins to move from theological to practical. He shifts from reminding us of what Christ has done, to what we should do because of what Christ has done.

Message | Resolve to Love

This is a new command, as the original command to love was to love your neighbor as yourself…the golden rule. Jesus elevates that expectation for us to love each other as He has loved us! Jesus commands us to do this because it doesn’t come naturally! Romantic love or parental love tends to come naturally, but to love people with a Christ like love, does not come on its own.

Message | Mystery Solved (Ephesians 3:1-13)

In this section of text, Paul speaks of a mystery that was revealed to him for the sake of the gentiles. A mystery in the New Testament is typically something that was once hidden but has now been made known. What has been made known? The gentiles have been given the same standing as the Jews in the family of God.

Message | Made One

In Paul's day the world was divided up in two groups, Jews and gentiles. The two did not mix, there was hostility between them. The Jews believed they were the ones who had received all the blessing of being God’s people…the gentiles had been left without hope. But God’s design from the beginning was to take the two and make them one…and he did so through the blood of Christ.

Message | But First...The Bad News

Chapter 2 begins with Paul teaching the good news, but to accurately teach the good news, people need to hear the bad news. Paul shares the bad news first. There is a cultural idea that we are all good people: since we are all children of God we must do something really bad to have that status removed. "Good” is our default position., and we have to behave our way to “bad.”However, that isn’t what scripture teaches. We begin as those under the wrath of God, and without Christ, that is where we will remain.

Message | "In Christ"

This week our study of the church of Ephesus moves us into the book of Ephesians. This letter was likely written around 60 AD. Paul left his ministry in Ephesus around 56 AD. He went to Jerusalem and was arrested and eventually was taken to Rome. It was from his Roman detention that Paul writes this letter back to the people he spent over 2 years doing ministry with. The letter to the Ephesians begins with a reminder of all that comes with being “In Christ”. This term is used in some fashion 9 times in the first 14 verses.

Message | The Mundane Work Of Ministry

We often think of the ministry of the Apostles as always being adventurous and excited, filled with feats of bravery and miraculous events. Yet while that is often true, there is more to the story. In Acts chapter 19 we find Paul fulfilling his promise to return to Ephesus. He meets some disciples there, who, like Apollos, didn’t quite get the baptism piece right, so Paul corrects them. Then he does what he always did, he started preaching in the synagogue sharing about Jesus. He did this for 3 months. And when he wore out his welcome, he rented a local classroom…and preached and teached everyday for two years! Two years of faithful gospel proclamation.
