THE PARTNER of Guardian reporter Glenn Greenwald was detained at Heathrow Airport in London for nine hours Sunday under the UK's Terrorism Act. Encrypted files from whistleblower Edward Snowden, on a portable computer drive intended for Greenwald, were among items confiscated from David Miranda. Comes word this afternoon that the White House had advance knowledge of Miranda's detention — although, a spokesman said, "it's not something we requested."Meanwhile, we learn that Snowden began downloading NSA files a year earlier than previously reported, while he was an employee of computer maker Dell Inc. IN JUST the most recent example of how insecure our digital privacy is, we hear that the city of London has ordered an advertising company to quit using its wifi-enabled trash bins to track the serial numbers of passing smart phones.Renew, the company that makes the LCD-equipped bins, claims that they weren't able to see information likes names, addresses, or passwords. SPIES HAVE dominated the news of late — the NSA spying scandal has revealed that the US government is basically tracking all our electronic communications. Today we discuss a couple of new revelations. First, CNN reports that the CIA had about three dozen operatives on the ground in Benghazi when the U.S. consulate was attacked last September. Why? BIOLOGISTS THIS week announced the discovery of a giant virus, up to ten times larger than most. The supersized virus, named Pandoravirus, is thought to be the biggest ever found.Interestingly, researchers say that "only 6% of its genes resembled genes seen before in other organisms on Earth." SOMETIMES THE world feels like there is an evil entity that thrives on hatred, working tirelessly to keep groups at each others throats. (We mean besides Al Sharpton.) Case in point: Those who are exploiting reaction to the George Zimmerman verdict for personal or professional gain. RESEARCHERS IN England announced this week the creation of genetically-engineered mice with artificial human chromosomes in every cell of their bodies. The government there has pledged tens of millions of pounds to synthetic biology research, including an international project to construct all 16 chromosomes of yeast to produce the first synthetic organism with a complex genome.The pitch is that the research will yield exciting new gene therapies, and it may. But transgenic mice (or pigs, goats, and cattle) with human genetic material raises some disturbing questions. ALGERIAN SPECIAL forces stormed a natural gas plant in the Sahara Desert Sunday, ending a hostage situation that reportedly claimed over 80 lives, including those of the 32 militants who attacked the plant last week. It is unclear if any of the hostages survived.The group claiming responsibility claimed the attack was a response to military action against comrades in neighboring Mali, where French troops (with British support) and a pan-African force (with American support) are moving against Islamist militants. Regardless of who wins the United States presidential election nine days from now, our drone war against suspected terrorists (and anyone within an acceptable radius, from a collateral damage standpoint) will continue without interruption.

AN INTERESTING thing emerged into public view last week during congressional hearings and the vice presidential debate: The State Department and the White House are playing a game of C.Y.A. regarding the deadly attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The question is whether President Obama or Secretary of State Clinton will take the fall.

IN LIEU of our take on the news this week — we really don't want to rehash the political conventions — we decided to bring back an interview from our first year on the web.In the fall of 2005, in the middle of the most intense Atlantic hurricane season ever (Katrina, Rita, and Wilma are, as of this writing, three of the six most intense hurricanes recorded) and following a destructive earthquake in Pakistan that killed an estimated 75,000 people, we spoke with Stan Deyo, CEO of Halo Orbital Technologies. His life story reads like a sci-fi thriller — except that readers might find the plot too "out there" even for fiction.His resume includes Above Top Secret security clearance, undercover work for the FBI, and work on a black budget project developing "flying saucer" propulsion technology under Dr. Edward Teller.He's also a computer programmer in seven languages, the author of two books and five scientific papers, a university lecturer in 3D computer animation and graphic art, and an amateur archeologist in the Middle East where he believes he's found the location of the Garden of Eden. (We didn’t even get a chance to talk about that.)Stan discussed his earthquake prediction maps, which are based on ocean temperature data provided by the U.S. Navy. He’s been accurate approaching 80 to 90 percent of the time, to the point that it appears the Navy is withholding information from Stan from time to time. We got his assessment of the killer quake in Pakistan.He also talked about his work on anti-gravity, research that almost got him killed at the bottom of a mile-deep mine shaft in Australia. Stan says this technology is in use today, but not by any national government. SOMETIMES WE come across stories that seem important and connected, but we just can't get our minds completely around them. Try these on for size.Lord James of Blackheath, whom you might remember for his "Foundation X" speech in 2010 (link opens YouTube video), stated in the House of Lords Thursday (2/16) that he's been investigating for the last two years an attempted fraud or money laundering scheme, possibly involving the government of the U.S. or the Federal Reserve Bank, in the neighborhood of $15 trillion. How much of it is in the hands of supposedly stable financial institutions? Is any of it actually being circulated intentionally by those institutions?
