New Zealand Star Jason Lochhead joins the show to share his playing career, coaching career, golf game, and lots of great stories from the road. Jason played 116 FIVB events, earning 78 main draw results and 11 top 10 finishes. Jason and partner Kirk Pitman narrowly missed the Olympics as players before joining the coaching ranks and working with top teams from around the world. Jason started his coaching career with Vanuatu, before leading super best friend of the show Ben Saxton and Chaim Schalk to their best results as a team. Ryerson Rams Head Coach Matt Harris joins the show! Superstar Gavin Schmitt joined the show to talk about his career that includes being approached at his part time job in high school to joining the National Team a few years later. Gavin is a CCAA National Champion with Red Deer College, he won league championships in Korea, Turkey, Greece, Brazil, and won several MPV, best opposite & best scorer awards. Bryan Fraser is currently the head coach of the College of the Rockies Avalanche women's volleyball team. Bryan started coaching during his playing career when he had opportunities with his pro club in Holland and with the Saskatchewan Provincial Team Program. As a player Bryan played for University of Saskatchewan Huskies for five years, Canada's Junior National Team and after graduation Bryan went to the Volleyball Canada full-time training centre. Jessie and Mariah joined the show to talk about their careers and new project VolleyIQ! Both Jessie and Mariah played club for the Dinos Volleyball Club in Calgary and for Team Alberta growing up. Megan Nagy (Dehod) took time out of her Wedding Anniversary to record an episode with us! Megan grew up in Saskatchewan where she competed in several spots including volleyball and baseball. She made the decision to pursue volleyball at Medicine Hat College where she earned First Team All-Star each year, Female Athlete of the Year and the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association Player of the Year. After college Megan played professionally in Laon, France. After focusing on indoor Megan made the goal of representing Canada on the beach! She moved to Toronto to tryout for the squad and begin training full time. During her career she has represented Canada 30 times, earning 14 top 10 finishes! Patrick Johnston has accomplished so much! While playing for Durham Attack he helped the club win a Provincial and National Championship. Outside of club he would represent Canada at the NORCECA Youth Championships in Mexico City and Team Ontario at the Canada Games in Regina. Patrick committed to Thompson Rivers where he was awarded the Sports Task Force Athletes of the Year. Pat transferred back to Ontario to play for the University of Western Mustangs. He would earn OUA Libero of the Year and a Second Team OUA All-Star. While at Western Pat completed his Masters of Coaching and would coach with the Mustangs and Boston College. After completing his education Pat would coach the Fanshawe Falcons to 3 Provincial Titles and a National Championship! Canadian Libero Kristen Moncks joins the show! Kristen grew up playing for Aces and Dinos in Alberta before attending Medicine Hat College where she would be named Rookie of the Year and a 1st Team All Star during her career. 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Todd Rogers joins the show! Todd is a 2x Olympian, he's won 54 AVP Championships, when partnered with Phil Dalhausser the pair played in 57 events and played for a medal 44 times, winning 23 times! From 2008-2010, Rogers and Dalhausser won nine of the 13 FIVB Grand Slams they played! Todd is also a 4x Defensive Player of the Year on the FIVB, Best Setter (2005), Most Inspirational (2008), Team of the Year with Phil in 2010, and Tour Champion in 2010. The Big Shooter, King of the Beach, John May joins the show! As a player John lead the York Lions to 3 OUA Championships, and was a 2x 1st Team All Star. Fun fact, May would play one season at BYU in the NCAA. Later on John stopped playing to create the Labatt Tour that would help Canada compete at the highest level on the FIVB Tour. John would go on to coach Mark Heese and John Child at the 2004 Olympics where the team finished 5th. John would make another appearance at the Olympics, this time coaching Jamie Broder and Kristina Valjas/May at the 2016 games. John was also with the squad when Broder/Valjas captured Canada's first ever FIVB Gold Medal on the women's side! Another first for Canada was when Sam Schachter and Garrett May won our first Youth World Championships where John was a part of the coaching staff. No stranger to the indoor game, early on in his coaching career John lead the U of Toronto Women's Team to their first OUA Championship. More recently John coached the York Lions Women's program. John was also the man behind Crush, one of, it not the most dominate club team to ever play in Canada. John has put a lot of time into our sport and had a lot of influence on several levels of volleyball. We really appreciate him coming on the show and hope you enjoy this episode! Craig Marshall joined us to take a deep dive into the coaching world. Craig is currently attending the University of Alberta in pursuit of his Master’s Degree in Coaching. Craig has coached with the Golden Bears for 5 seasons, Team Alberta, King's University Men's and Women's Teams as an Assistant and for several clubs. Kamila Haase grew up competing in Track and Field and Figure Skating. She made the change to volleyball in grade 11 and her career took off from there. Playing club for the Scarborough Titans, Kamila then made Team Ontario and the Youth National Team. Kamila attended McMaster where she was named to the OUA All Rookie Team and helped the Marauders win an OUA Gold and Silver medal during her career. Sarah-Jeanne has already represented Canada eight times before her 24th birthday! SJ made her debut for Canada with partner Helene Racourt where they finished 4th at a Jamaica Norceca. The pair continued their impressive start finishing 9th at the Cambodia FIVB event. Sarah-Jeanne has also earned podium success at the Grand Prix Beach Quebec and Quebec Provincials. The Abrams brothers joined the show to talk about their careers and some amazing back yard battles. Robbie played at the University of Guelph, has been on the podium in both the Provincials and Nationals on the Beach and represented Canada at U21 Worlds. Steven currently plays at the University of Windsor where he was named to the OUA All Rookie team, he also represented Canada on the Beach at U21 and has some hardware from the OVA, Volleyball Canada and Canada Cup. Denmark Star Martin Trans joined us to talk about the beach volleyball system in Denmark, his career, their training group and some mental tips that have helped him improve so quickly. Martin represented Denmark six times at youth CEV events before going on the FIVB World Tour. He's finished in the Top 5 an impressive 9 times out of 14 events. Including winning the 2019 Continental Cup in Umag and a Silver Medal at the Tel Aviv 1 Star. Fun fact Martin's last 4 events have been with different partners from the Beach Volley Team Denmark. In each of those events he finished in the Top5. Team Members include, Martin Trans, Kristoffer Abell, Mads Rosager, Jacob Brinck, Daniel Thomsen, and Morten Overgaard. Chhase took time from his studies to take us on a journey through his volleyball career. We learned all about his club career, Baden Cup as a player and Coach, Camosun College Chargers and the great Charles Parkinson. (shout out to Dave Dooley for leading the Chargers to an CCAA Championship this season!) We also learned about Chhase's transfer to the University of New Brunswick and playing for the Reds where he was named AUS Libero of the Year. Chhase is a character around the beach community so we had to talk about his start, the KBVA, Vancouver Open and his appearance at Beach Blast's Play with the Pros. Sarah Melenka from Team Canada's Women's Sitting Volleyball Team joins the show to talk about qualifying for Tokyo, Parapan American Games in Peru and her career with Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)’s varsity team. Sarah was diagnosed with compartment syndrome at age 15. After several surgeries she returned to play competing in track and field and volleyball in high school before becoming a varsity athlete in the CCAA. Kofi joined the show shortly after he broke the news that he will be focusing on music full time and not continuing with volleyball (for now we hope). Gyimah played for the Scarborough Titans, Team Ontario, Youth National Team before committing to UCLA. While dominating at UCLA Kofi represented Canada on our Junior National Team and this past summer played for our Senior National Team at VNL. Kofi recently signed with Red Bull Records, we can't wait for his first album! Hopefully in the new future he can pull off a "Mika Zibanejad" and be a professional athlete (beach or indoor) while also being a professional artist. We hope you enjoyed this episode! National Team Libero Dre Foreman joined us to talk about his career in volleyball, share some great stories (The Blair Bann one is easily Top 5 in show history!), and talk about what his future plans are. Andre is currently with the National Excellence Program (NEP) in Gatineau, Quebec. Last summer Dre was on our National B Team that competed at the Pan American Cup. Foreman has won dozens of medals during his career including a Bronze at CCAA Nationals with the Fanshawe Falcons, 2 National Titles and a Provincial Championship with London Fire. U SPORTS Champion, Championship MVP, and USports Rookie of the year Amanda Moppett-Beatch joins the show! Amanda grew up in Calgary and went on to have a great career with the Calgary Dinos.
