COVID has meant that in some cases we have not been able to return the press car that we usually have for a week. Unfortunately, I have had to keep the Subaru WRX STI for several weeks. Unfortunately for those who were to get it next but great for me. David Rowley is the national Corporate affairs manager for Subaru Australia and joins us on the line Subjects covered include: How much was his decision to go to Subaru influenced by them having the WRX? As we mentioned in our news service, the Grattan Institute has just released a report titled Gridlock: removing barriers to policy reform It was very critical of systemic problems in government including • The reducing of expertise and independence of the public service, • Too many ministerial advisers closely tied to political parties • Lack of control of political donations, campaign finance, lobbying, and post-politics careers. • And the absence of a federal anti-corruption commission with teeth. Is there a strong basis for their comments and what should be down about it? Ken Dobinson was a senior executive in what was then the Department of Main Roads in NSW and he joins us now.

Buses are often seen as the poor cousin of public transport with little given to providing a whole of journey positive experience. In New Zealand, an off-street Bus Exchange, opened in 2000, provided a dramatic demonstration of the benefits of providing airport-quality waiting areas for bus passengers. In 2006 transport planning expert, Brian Smith introduced the concept of shopfront bus passenger lounges to Christchurch. In 2020 cost pressures threatened this initiative. This concept is not only practical but engages the public in a broader understanding of what a good bus system needs. Following is an extract from a regular interview on ABC Central West radio which broadcasts to 20 areas such as Orange, Bathurst, Parkes, Lithgow, Mudgee, and Goulburn The Questions are being asked by the breakfast presenter Ewan Gilbert. Quote from Brian Smith The city council there was suffering some budget problems as a result of COVID and they were looking for ways to cut spending. The operating costs of the Riccarton bus lounges made them a candidate. But they consulted with the community, and they received overwhelming support for the retention of the bus lounges. So it's great to see the council both listening to its community, but also recognising the benefits to customers of operating these high-quality passenger waiting spaces. It really does treat bus passengers in Christchurch as very valued customers.

We have talked recently with Roland Rivero Kia’s product manager, about their Niro in particular, their car that has electric options to it. While there are many specific product features, introducing electrification vehicles into the Australian market requires understanding and finesse. In our chat Roland discusses • The split between the different versions from the car which in percentage terms will be: 20% for the fully electric model; 70% for the mild hybrid and 10% for the plug-in hybrid • Why is a plug-in hybrid percentage so low when it can do over 50km on batteries, which is good for many trips in the urban area and then have the flexibility of a petrol engine for long trips. • When does the petrol engine come in? When the battery runs out or when you need a surge of power (more than 70% of the throttle) or for holding a high speed (over 129 km/hr). • The value of a plug-in hybrid is an indication of an evolving nature of helping the customer understand how they might choose and use a vehicle to their advantage. • The key element is the customer's circumstances • The Niro they have now imported into the country was launched overseas some years ago and it is due for an update within a year. How does that affect the sales now? • Kia is not just putting its toe in the water but is implementing a long-term strategy with the electrification of vehicles.

The relatively recent developments in the electrification of vehicles, most particularly starting in 2000 or so with the Toyota Prius hybrid, did not sell itself on the elegance of its outward appearance. Although the need for environmental considerations is becoming even more critical, hybrids and electric vehicles can no longer look like a science experiment. Later this year, Hyundai will launch in Australia the next generation of their all-electric sedan, the Ioniq. It doesn't look like a catch-up vehicle, but one that is very futuristic in its design, not only its technology. • The new Ioniq 5 – built as an electric car from the ground up • A modern looking product • By being built as electric cars, vehicles will change shape in the years ahead as they are no longer bounded by the powertrains of old. • Ioniq 5 looks modern but pays homage to a futuristic design concept from the past • Same power train as the Hyundai Kona but there will be a modular platform • There are strong indications they are working on a performance version which will be part of the electric car vision • Range anxiety is real but there is a poor understanding of how many cars do not travel great distances. • Current electric vehicle buyers are well informed and focused on the broader issue. There is not a situation of people walking into a dealer to buy an internal combustion engine car and being talked into an electric one. • The quietness of an electric car can produce a much calmer driving environment. • If there is a consistent need for doing long trips then a plug-in hybrid is potential the best of both worlds at the moment. The Ioniq is purely an electric vehicle but plug-in hybrids will be part of the fleet. • The first question should be “How will you use the car?” and then “How much range do I need?” • Federal Government is not giving incentives at the moment but State governments are being more active. • Bill was most struck by how electric vehicles can produce a much more pleasant ride when he rode in a hydrogen bus. It makes it feel like a luxury ride.

The ARRB, formerly the Australian Road Research Board, has a vision statement to To help make the world’s cities smarter, cleaner, greener, safer, more efficient and productive through intelligent transport solutions. How do we do this is times of difficult funding and a media driven emphasis on short term immediate. It is a pleasure to again speak to Michael Caltabiano CEO of ARRB. Will Hagan has been broadcasting on motoring and motor racing for more than half a century. When I was arranging to talk to International race and rally champion Rauno Aaltonen Will was the ideal person to get some back ground information. Will is, of course more than happy to talk on a range of subjects and in this short interview that goes for over an hour he covered many subjects in his exuberant style. When car companies have a sedan and a hatchback, they're often very similar, certainly at the front and the sedan is often just a fairly pedestrian sort of vehicle at the back. Now, it's just been driving some of the Hyundai’s i30s a very successful little car in the small car category, along with things like Corollas. Now, the hatchback, it's been in here for a few years, looks fine and went well. But then, as I was about to swap to the sedan, and it looked just so different. Why? Bill Thomas is the general manager of Hyundai’s public relations. Michael Caltabiano is the Chief Executive Officer of ARRB, the preeminent road research organisation in Australia. He has been a politician but he also has a degree and experience in engineering. Whenever I have visited ARRB, Michael has always chatted while showing me around the laboratories. We never sit in an office or meeting room. I wanted to talk to someone in his organisation about what makes a good road and the technical reasons why there can be problems and how does that affect users. I think his eyes lit up. This was a subject that he himself had a passion for and an extensive understanding of the issues so, consequently he was more than happy to have the chat. Subjects he covers include: • Moving away from just technology to a bigger focus on consumer behaviour • Big data has to be about understanding behaviour change • Not just designing roads for 40 years but researching the “Perpetual Road” where the foundation stays for the foreseeable future but you may change the surface periodically. • Why urban roads are smooth (and expensive) but rural roads have coarser payments but are cheaper to build. • Concrete roads are now out of favour • The health industry has shown that it is usually better to identify if there is a problem before the external symptoms are very apparent. Measuring the condition of the road is important before potholes develop. Use of lasers and other technologies to measure the condition of the road. • The use of digital mapping is a great way of combining data from a range of sources to better understand the complexity and interaction between different factors to identify the best solutions. • We need to have good data especially with high powered analysis such as Artificial Intelligence. • From Sydney to the north there was, quite some years ago, what was once considered the longest crack in a road. Michael was there at the time. • ARRB has a great input to world best research and is contributing to international considerations of world’s best practice.

Finland’s celebrated motor sport driver, Rauno Aaltonen, won many events and along with local Australia hero Bob Holden, in 1966 finished first in our famous touring car race at Bathurst’s Mt Panorama, in a tiny Mini Cooper S. I recorded a chat with him for the “Overdrive – Cars, Transport and Culture” radio and podcast program – we chatted for over an hour. Bob Holden had secretly worked on their car: nothing illegal just blue printing to the precise specifications. The top nine places in the race were Mini cooper Ss but the Aaltonen/Holden vehicle won by over a lap. Rauno explains why, even with harder tyres, they were just as fast and didn’t have to change wheels as much.
