Peugeot/Citroen Australia Managing Director talks about brand image and the new “beautiful” 2008 SUV
I've just been on a lovely drive down to Akuna Bay in New South Wales in Sydney, where we were having a look at the new 2008 Peugeot small SUV. There I met Peugeot/Citroen Australia’s Managing Director Kate Gillis. Kate has an interesting background in working for companies that place great importance on brand value and produce quality products. Waterford Crystal was one of her former employees. After the event we had a good chat about what Peugeot as a brand represents and where it might go with its products. Subjects covered include: • Peugeot’s 210-year history • Should Peugeot have products that reflect its earlier activities such as coffee mills and salt and pepper shakers • The impact of COVID on our culture and travel habits • The use of the internet in marketing and selling cars • Electrification • Freight transport especially deliveries • The “beautiful” 2008. The GT model is more Sportwagon than SUV

Jaguar XE: updated with new connected technologies 4. Fred Racing at Bathurst 5. Nissan Duke – Dean comment – 50 anniversary Road test • When the Nissan Duke was first launched ten years ago, I struggled to like its outward design. It was a bit cartoonish. the latest model is more may stream. But our resident artist Dean Oliver has a different take – Viva la Difference – in our interview he explains why.he really liked the first one. Feedback • A few quick comments on the three dual cab utes we took for a drive this week • Mazda BT-50 was solid, bland in gun metal grey and lacked a few ute type refinements – good for ongoing reliability • The Volkswagen Amarok was powerful and had Germanic efficiency but not quite the as much family comfort – good for towing • The Ford Ranger – had a bright burnt orange paint job, good features, easy to use infotainment – small but quiet engine – best for the family • For all the motoring talk about power and capability – we were taking some photos in the Hawksbury Show ground. A tough truck driver drove past, leant out the window and shouted - I will take the orange one • And talking about trucks, for the last few weeks we have ranted against car infotainment systems that are not easy to understand and use. A colleague who has driven trucks for over 20 years said that he spent all his time in Kenworths, if he were to hop into another brand he would struggle, because of the different way the instruments are set out. Interview We mentioned in the news how our Fred Brian was racing at Bathurst in a 1969 Holden Monaro. We debrief with Fred on all the nuances of man handling a big, old car around the famous circuit. Historic Picton: telling the stories of pioneers of the district - the good and the tragic
Testing cars is not just about their features and performance. It is about how well you travel in them and what you can do when you get to a destination. On a trip to the Highlands for the launch of some new Audis, we passed through Picton. We sat in a park just near St Marks Anglican Church and Pioneer Cemetery. One tombstone hints at the tragedy of Janet Robinson's life. Born in Scotland and died in Australia in 1903 aged just 31. It would be nice to know some more details. While more details of her life are not available, beside 12 graves there are little plaques with a QR reader symbol on each one individually. You point your phone at it and you can hear a short recording of some historical details of the person or persons buried there. The stories behind twelve of the graves have been researched, compiled and written by Elizabeth Villy know to all as Betty, whom we managed to catch up with and have a chat. Betty covered a range of subjects including: • The story behind the lives of Mary Horton and her son Claude Stafford • Claude's father died when he was 5, his mother died when he was 12. When he was about 18 he died in Mt Kembla Mine disaster of 1902 along with three cousins and along with 92 other men and boys. • The horrendous working conditions in the mines in 1902 • Why she is researching a range of people not just the rich and well connected • Modern research systems let to search through old records for keywords, but the old methods mean you look at not only the story but the whole newspaper page, including the ads, and thus get a sense of the times in which the person lived. • Betty also did some research on the old Razorback Road.

Interview with Will Hagon on the occasion of Ron Tauranac's Death - Designer of Brabham racing cars
A few years before his death, I spoke to Sir Jack Brabham. The obvious start was to get him reminiscing about the old days. To my surprise he almost immediately said “you should speak to Ron Tauranac”. Ron had a long friendship with Brabham and Ron helped him no matter which team he was in and then held the official position of the design expert behind the cars that carried the Brabham name. Sir Jack’s reference wasn’t just a passing comment; a polite thank you, thrown into a speech about himself in the style you often see at the Oscars. It wasn’t even a formal recommendation to broaden the research. Sir Jack’s eyes lit up with enthusiasm, it seemed clear to me that Brabham felt that any discussion of his career needed to consider his mate and his mate deserved a large amount of credit. Ron Tauranac passed away recently at the age of 95. Someone who is close to motor racing and to the characters behind the events is celebrated motoring journalist Will Hagon. In this interview with Will he covers • How Ron was a partner, an integral part, of Brabham’s success • The beginning of Ron’s fascination with cars • How he and Jack went in the 1953 Redex trial • How Ron became the biggest builder of racing cars in the world • The role Ron played in the career of Larry Perkins • How Ron helped jack even before he was on his team • Talking with Ron in his later years, attending his 90th birthday and taking a picture of Ron beside a painting of a famous Brabham racing car. Ron Tauranac and Sir Jack Brabham had a friendship, a collaboration, a mateship that stood the test of time including the extremely difficult, complex and political environment of Formula 1 motor racing. Ron was one of the special Australia’s who pioneered creative and successful technology but sadly remains less well known that Jack Brabham and many others know that he deserves.

Transport experiences of COVID-19. Traffic Works is going well but also planning for the long term
Emmanuel Natalizio is the managing director of Traffic Works, a consultancy providing specialist traffic engineering advice to public and private clients. They are involved in many things, such as traffic design, traffic signal plans, public lighting signs and line marking, active transport and MANY more. Projects are still getting designed and other companies are taking those designs and building and doing maintenance work while traffic volumes are low. So traffic works has managed to maintain its 48 people workforce. The big issue is how do we take what we've learnt during this lockdown period and apply the best methods as we start to lessen the restrictions. I spoke to Emmanuel recently. Issues he covered included: 1. We have learnt a lot and the productivity is as high as it was, but now the big issue is how this stacks up over time (1:06) 2. Its working well now but we miss the day -to-day interaction with staff (2:48) 3. Working from home demonstrates the trust issue (3:57) 4. Designing bridges to look good: Reflections on Ray Wedgwood and the Anzac bridge
Description for Ray Wedgwood interview The post-war boom saw major road construction across the country which included many new bridges. There is much to learn from the life and times of this period. Recently, a well respected bridge engineer who had worked for the New South Wales Road Authority passed away. Ray Wedgwood was technically excellent, but he also had a passion for the aesthetics of a bridge. It helps if it looks good. During his career, Ray's manager at the time, Brian Pearson, wrote a book, "Aesthetics of Bridges". The Road Authority has subsequently put out a publication "Design guidelines to improve the appearance of bridges in New South Wales". But his long career also reflected a time when the professional engineer was valued within a more nurturing environment of the government authority. A man who was there at the time is our good friend, Ken Dobinson, who joins us on the line now.

Tyre (Tire)recycling: An Australian solution that is cheap and effective without creating pollution
Periodically, we are reminded of the problem of disposing of old vehicle tyres. There's been a number of suggestions as to what we should do, but there is concern that the cure may be worse than the disease with a lot of side effects: burning tyres, for example, just adds to air pollution. Now, an Australian start up Green Distillation Technologies says it has a solution that is both effective and profitable. Their chief operating officer is Trevor Bailey. In our discussion Trevor notes: • They have a demonstration plant up and running • It works on heating the tyres in a closed environment without air so that there is molecular changes without causing smoke and other pollutants. • He can run the power for his plant by using just 3% of the oil they produce in the recycling process. • It is producing quality by products such as oil and steel • There is a large amount of interest from overseas • They want to start a larger commercial size factory in Australia but we are slower to jump on board new technology as opposed to the US • Other recycling systems have disadvantages including taking all or more of the charge that is taxed on each new tyre to cover recycling.

What practical transport things can we learn from the Coronavirus pandemic from queuing to trucks
How the transport industry must cope with the coronavirus is often seen in very one-dimensional steps: Travel less; keep your distance. But there are many factors that interplay in the services we provide and the way the public uses them. It might seem simple, until there is a catastrophe. But if we are forced into looking at traffic and transport issues for this event what can it teach us about how we manage in the “typical” situation? We spoke to Wendy Adam who has a long career in transport, planning, and management and has given much to the industry, including being AITPM branch president in New South Wales and Queensland.

Coronavirus: What is happen with public transport around the world for essential trips
In regard to the Coronavirus, we must be totally committed to limiting travel and washing hands and so on. But some people will still have to travel. Is there still a role for public transport? And if so, what are or should the service providers be doing? Yale Wong is from the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at Sydney University. He has been looking at this situation around the world.

Australian research has highlighted the combined impact of distraction and fatigue in truck drivers and what the industry is doing about it. Using Australia’s first Truck Simulator, Monash University researchers conducted tests on 74 truck drivers under different conditions. The drivers were sleep deprived and then intentionally distracted during driver simulation for two-hours. Researchers recorded 29 crashes in the simulator, with 72% in fatigue condition and 28% of the crashes while drivers were alert. Drivers were twice as likely to crash when fatigued, but 11 times more likely to crash when fatigue and distraction were both present. Researchers were also able to accurately detect a driver’s level of fatigue while the driver’s eyes were still open, in real-time, and before a safety critical event such as a micro sleep occurs. Samsung All-Solid-State Battery Technology There was once a time when improvements to cars obviously had to come from the existing car industry and be first reported in motoring magazines. But now other manufactures and reporting avenues are getting into the act. Researchers from Samsung have presented the results of a study on high-performance, long-lasting all-solid-state batteries to Nature Energy, one of the world’s leading scientific journals. The batteries have a larger capacity, a longer cycle life, and enhanced overall safety. The prototype pouch cell would enable an electric vehicle to travel up to 800km on a single charge, with a cycle life of over 1,000 charges. That means your vehicle could travel 800,000 kilometres with little battery degradation. It has also meant that the prototype is approximately 50 percent smaller by volume than a conventional lithium-ion battery. A solid-state battery uses solid electrodes and electrolyte, instead of the liquid or polymer gel electrolytes found in lithium-ion or lithium polymer batteries. Car and race companies to build ventilators Fighting the Coronavirus is not just about medicines. Respirator are critical to help sick people breath and the car manufacturing and racing industries are stepping in to help the fight. When Apollo 13 had its mishap the engineers on the ground had to apply their skills to get a quick solution. The motor industry thinks it has skills that can help the Coronavirus situation. They can’t produce a vaccine but can help expedite the building of respirators for those who have caught the virus and are having trouble breathing. General Motors is offering its logistics, purchasing and manufacturing expertise to help Ventec Life Systems build more of its ventilators. Some formula 1 teams have offered to use their skills in rapid development in a similar way while Ferrari is to contribute help in providing machinery needed for intensive care such as fans and respirators.

Nissan's future: "There is a necessity for change": Interview Stephen Lester MD Nissan Australia:
Interview with Stephen Lester – MD Nissan Australia • Hero cars, like the N-Trek Warrior are important across the range • Nissan would still like to have some sedans but there are none available at the moment • Electric cars offer a much different canvas for car designers • They are well on the way to getting bi-directional charge approved for the Leaf (use you car battery for a period to run your house, outdoor machine, camping site etc) • Thirty percent of the range should be electric by 2022 • There is a necessity for change in how we've motored for the last 100 years and how we will plan to motor for the next 100 years.
