Everything is F*cked | MARK MANSON
EHope is something most of us believe is a necessity in order to progress. Without it, would you be driven to do anything meaningful in your life? It's hope that convinces you of potential rewards on the other side of your efforts. But what if the way you've been looking at hope isn't help you but hindering? And, if that's the case, is there a more practical, pragmatic way for you to approach hopefulness in a way that will serve you best? That's what today's conversation is all about. I'm joined by New York Times Bestselling Author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything is F*cked, Mark Manson. We talk about the uncomfortable truth few people are willing to admit to themselves, the difference between Master Morality and Slave Morality, how everyone is driven by what he calls, "a God Value," how pain is the universal constant, and why, in the midst of everything being horrible, you can still have hope. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Getting through it together The new normal A need for certainty Create a daily structure The thinking brain The process of maturity Social accountability Implementing habits Finding new behavior Shifting your perception The uncomfortable truth Gaining approval The need for meaning Sharing your story Instinctual morality Victimhood culture MARK MANSON My guest today is the one and only, Mark Manson, and it's very likely that you are already very familiar with him, or at least, his last two books, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything is F*cked. He is a New York Times Bestselling Author and a self-described thinker and life enthusiast. Part of the reason for his tremendous success is his no BS approach to self-development. In fact, that's the reason why I follow him and his words closely. In an environment and popular culture designed to make everyone feel good about themselves, Mark would rather bring to light the uncomfortable truths few are willing to deal with. Guys, I think you're going to like this one as much as I enjoyed the conversation. So, sit back, take some notes, and listen to the way it really is. IRON COUNCIL Gents, our digital brotherhood, the Iron Council continues to grow in these uncertain times. I think that's because it's times like these that really cause us to reflect on the type of men we are and how we're showing up. For a long time, I knew that I was capable of so much more but it was frustrating knowing that there was a huge gap between what I knew I was capable of and what I was actually doing. I started hiring mentors and surrounding myself with good and capable men and that's when things really started to take a turn for the better. The problem for most men is that they don't know where connect with the type of men I'm talking about. That's what the Iron Council is for and, without beating a dead horse about it, if you want to thrive in all aspects of your life, band with other men. It really is that powerful. Courage Under Fire | OMAR "CRISPY" AVILA
EWhat does it take to exhibit extreme courage under fire? I wish I could tell you there was an exact formula for performing well under life and death pressure but there isn't. But what I can tell you is that my guest today, Omar 'Crispy' Avila is a man who has done just that. When in Iraq, his vehicle was hit by an IED sending it six feet in the air. I'm not going to ruin the story by telling you about the resulting fallout and how Crispy conducted himself but I will say you're not going to want to miss it. We also talk about using humor as a way to calm a situation, overcoming survivor's guilt, how to train properly for unknown events, and how every man can learn to develop courage under fire. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Serving your community Letting your guard down Making light of a situation Comedy as therapy Joining the infantry Moving forward in life Laying down fire Extended deployment Losing faith in God Keeping your composure The Green Zone Flying into Germany Focus under chaos Survivors guilt The recovery process Finding inner peace OMAR 'CRISPY' AVILA My guest today is Omar 'Crispy' Avila and he is a retired army combat veteran. But more than that he is someone who is extremely influential in the veteran community and has used his unfortunate circumstances to lift and inspire millions of people across the planet. He sustained catastrophic damage to his body when his vehicle was hit with an IED and survived over 75% of his body burned and been rendered nearly blind. I had the opportunity to meet him at SHOT Show several months ago and invited him to join us on the podcast because I have always been inspired by how he lives his life, uses humor with the Black Rifle Coffee Company team to inspire, and the kind of man he is. PRIORITIZE AND EXECUTE If you're anything like me, it's easy for you to fall into the trap of consumption. I mean, you're listening to this podcast right now which can be beneficial but if you never apply any of what you learn, is it even useful? This is the trap of the self-development space – consumption without production. But in the Iron Council for the month of May, we're talking about prioritizing the information you have and the objectives you've identified for yourself and putting them into action. It's about unpacking what you want to accomplish in your health, relationships, business, and life, identifying the "order of operations," and putting in the work required to make it happen. If you fall into "paralysis by analysis," and often consume more than you produce, this is the month for you to band with 530 like-minded men who will help you accomplish more in the next 90 days than you ever have in a year. How to Rewire Your Mind and Body | SCOTT CARNEY
"Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." Most of us have heard some variation of that quote accredited to Viktor Frankl but most of us don't know how to manage that space effectively and condition our minds and bodies to respond properly. That's why today's conversation with New York Times Bestselling Author, Scott Carney, is crucial. During our discussion, we talk about the gap between stimulus and response, how to put ourselves into a highly-effective flow state, fight and flight chemistry, and how to rewire your mind and body for maximum results. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The placebo effect Western medicine Learning to be resilient Fight or flight responses Giving yourself stress Connecting to the environment The ultimate stress Walking your own path Unmitigated horror Reliving your emotional pass Living the status quo Overriding your response Throwing kettlebells Practicing trust and empathy A different point of reference Creating bandwidth SCOTT CARNEY My guest today is New York Times Bestselling, Scott Carney, author of What Doesn't Kill Us, and his new book, The Wedge. He is an investigative journalist and anthropologist. He's done work for Wired, Men's Journal, Playboy, Discover, Outside, and Fast Company and he gained a lot of notoriety as he trained with Wim Hof. Originally, he intended on debunking a lot of Wim's teachings but found the practices to be life-changing and a critical part of his life and work. Scott's been a friend for several years since he talked with us about his book, What Doesn't Kill Us and you're going to hear how much excitement he has for life. Quite frankly, it's infectious. EI'm sure, by now, you're aware of the powerful team an Echelon Front led by Navy SEAL Commander, Jocko Willink. At this point, I've had the majority of his team on the podcast including my guest today, Mike Sarraille. Today, Mike talks with us about the power of the veteran community in the civilian sector. We go into some topics that aren't usually addressed regarding transitioning military members including biases against veterans, the bitterness and entitlement some veterans develop, translatable skills from military to civilian life, and, ultimately, how we put our nation's toughest warriors to work. He served alongside Jocko Willink and Leif Babin with SEAL Team THREE and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Ramadi in 2006. He also served as the primary leadership instructor for all officers graduating from the SEAL training pipeline and worked in the Joint Special Operations Command where he completed multiple combat tours. Mike is a recipient of the Silver Star, six Bronze Stars, two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, and a Purple Heart. Today he is here to talk with us about his experience and how to put our nation's warriors to work. IRON COUNCIL The Iron Council is growing. I think part of the reason for that is, during times of crisis, men know and have a desire to step into the positions that will best serve their families and communities. It's built into our DNA to lead, especially in times of crisis. And, that's exactly what we're doing to equip the men who band with us inside our exclusive brotherhood, The Iron Council. When you join with us, we're going to give you the foundation for growth, success, and effective leadership as a father, husband, business owner, and community leader. And, on top of that, you're going to have a path to run on and a place where you can develop the camaraderie most men don't get outside of military service or team sports. If you're ready to step up and want the framework and the accountability to do so, join us in the Iron Council by going to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil. Savage Son | JACK CARR
EMy repeat guest, friend, former Navy SEAL, and author of the James Reece series which includes Terminal List, True Believer, and his newest (released today), Savage Son. His name is Jack Carr and I take every opportunity I can to talk with him. And, if you've listened to any of our previous episodes, you'll know exactly why. Jack is one of the most genuine men I know and I've always been fascinated with his transition from warrior to author. Today, we talk about putting yourself in the public eye, pursuing something you've always been interested in, how military combat compares to civilian life and the life of a writer and forging the path you've always wanted to walk. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Emerging opportunities Leveling the playing field Social media Providing value Those who sacrificed Wasted bandwidth The Cold War Who you follow An unassuming demeanor Being kind to people Flipping your switch What's next The hero's journey Dealing with bureaucracy Adapting quickly Standard operating procedures JACK CARR My guest today is the one and only Jack Carr. He spent over 20 years in Naval Special Warfare as a SEAL Sniper, Troop Commander, and a Task Unit Commander leading a team in Iraq and Afghanistan. It's probably a big reason his last three books are so extremely credible – he's used his decades of combat experience as the foundation for the immense amount of research that goes into his works. Jack is also an avid hunter, a husband, and a father. He's also a helluva guy as I've gotten to know him over the past several years and enjoyed our friendship. And an update since we originally recorded this episode at SHOT Show several months ago, Jack's book, Terminal List will become a TV Series with Chris Pratt playing James Reece. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. IRON COUNCIL I've got to say that regardless of the issues you may be dealing with due to the fallout of Coronavirus, this time truly can be a blessing in disguise if you're willing to look at it that way. Over the past four weeks, I've… Lost 11lbs and 2.5% body fat Increased revenue by 23% over last month Completed my gym build-out Completed my podcast studio renovation Read 6 books Completed the outline of my next book Secured 7 high-caliber podcast guests Appeared on 12 podcasts Reached over 100,000 YouTube subscribers I don't tell you this to brag. I tell you this because there is a tremendous opportunity for you to crush your life right now. And, if you're interested in how I and thousands of other men are doing it, consider joining us inside the Iron Council. How to Think Like a Rocket Scientist | OZAN VAROL
EWe've all heard the term, "It's not rocket science." And, while that is true of most conversations, topics, and activities, there are benefits to thinking about problems the way a rocket scientist does. Today, I am joined by Ozan Varol, a rocket scientist who formerly worked with NASA. In today's conversation, we talk about what it means to test as you fly and fly as you test, the difference between strategies and tactics and why it matters, why it's important to give you mental space to play, and why thinking like a rocket scientist will help you make giant leaps in your personal and professional life. He was born in Istanbul and, at the age of 17, he moved to the United States alone to study astrophysics. While he was there, he served on the operations team for the Mars Exploration Rovers. If that wasn't enough, he then pivoted and graduated first in his class from law school and earned the highest grade point average in his law school's history. He now teaches law as a professor and his works have been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, TIME, CNN, and the Washington Post. And, today, he is here to share some of his knowledge with us from his new book, Think Like a Rocket Scientist. The Power of Vision Driven Leadership | MICHAEL HYATT
EWhen most of us think about leadership, we think about inspiring, motivating, and influencing others. But rarely do we think deeply about our vision for a business, organization, or family. Ironic considering vision is the foundation of inspiration, motivation, and influence. Today, I am privileged to be joined by a man who has been a tremendous leader to me on my path to build and lead the Order of Man movement. We cover so much in this conversion including the importance of a "vision grid," how to effectively respond to resistance, four characteristics of great leadership, the difference between your "circle of concern" and your "circle of influence," and the power of vision-driven leadership. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The science of different things The power of simplicity Distilling information Where all change begins Casting vision Hacking your belief system Delusional vs. believable The scope of possibilities Vision vs. strategy Adjusting your vision Fear of missing out Diagnosing your life 36:40 Finding inspiration Being able to sell it An inspirational-deficit world Think of the end from the beginning MICHAEL HYATT My guest today is Michael Hyatt. He is an author, podcaster, speaker, and former chairman of Thomas Nelson publishing. I came across Michael's work years ago as I was launching the Order of Man podcast and for the last 5 years, I've been following his advice and implementing his strategies for growing and leading a movement, building effective organizational strategies, and taking charge of my business and personal life. So, when his team reached out requesting to have Michael on our podcast, I jumped at the opportunity to have a conversation with a man who has been extremely influential in my life. He is a New York Times Bestselling author and today, he is here to talk with us about his new book, The Vision Driven Leader. GREGORY POLAND Today, I am joined by Dr. Gregory Poland, Mary Lowell Leary professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also the director of the Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group and editor-in-chief of the medical journal, Vaccine. In addition, he previously served as the president of the Health Defense Board and is the recipient of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. With more than 30 years of work in the field of viruses and vaccines, his team is currently using immunological testing and other methods to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. IRON COUNCIL It's likely that, in the wake of the Coronavirus fallout, you've been isolated to some degree. And, if that's the case (even if it's not), it's crucial that you develop and maintain relationships with other men who are motivated and ambitious as you are. That's where the Iron Council comes in. We've created a network of over 500 men, all with their own unique perspectives and objectives, who are willing and able to accomplish big things in their lives and help you do the same. And, although all of the men have differing goals, we've banded together in a common goal to become the most effective and capable men we can be (which, during these trying times, is crucial). We have a time and battle-tested system for helping you accomplish big things on the home, personal, and business front and all you have to do is tap into the framework and network, and do the work required. Redefining Yourself | TUCKER MAX
EMost of you are familiar with Tucker Max. Regardless of what you think about him, there is no fence-sitting. You either love the guy or hate him. But that's part of the reason I wanted to have a conversation with him – to find out what makes him so polarizing and how he feels about that. That said, the biggest reason I wanted to talk with him is to learn about his ability to redefine himself from college frat boy to successful entrepreneur, husband, and father. I think we can all relate messing some things up along the path and many of us have or are working on our redemption story. Today, Tucker and I talk about speaking the truth, overcoming judgment, the reality of the "zero f's" mentality, and, ultimately, how to redefine yourself. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The pain of staying the same Fixing what's inside Going through therapy Getting fired Getting rejected Writing a Best Seller Scribe Media Finding your personal truth Negotiating reality Tribal warfare Consumerism culture Plant medicine therapy The best version of yourself Separating from your ego Breaking down barriers Controlling the narrative Masculine movement of feminism How to uncover your story TUCKER MAX Most of you know my guest today, Tucker Max. If you're like me, you ran across one of his New York Times Bestselling books in an airport or bookstore. That's likely the case because he's sold over 4,500,000 copies of them. He's been credited with starting the literary genre, "fratire" where he detailed and documented his college-day exploits. And, although, that's what made him famous, his ability to redefine himself from those days to who he is today is what really had me interested in talking with him. He's now the founder of Scribe Media and is helping other people tell their own stories in their own unique way and give a voice to those who need it and for those who need to hear it. IRON COUNCIL Gents, you've heard about the Iron Council before but what I wanted to share with you today is something that we are working on starting next week. We call it the Twelve-Week Battle Plan and it's a system we've developed over the past five years to help you accomplish more in a 90-day span than you potentially have in an entire year. In fact, when I wrote my book, Sovereignty, I completed it in a Battle Planning cycle using the same system the members of the Iron Council are using. A Primer on Biblical Masculinity | BISHOP ROBERT BARRON
Today, we tackle a conversation we've never had on this podcast – biblical masculinity. As you men are well aware, Order of Man is a non-religious movement but that doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't look at all available paths to the type of men we have a desire to be. And, I can think of no better guest to have this type of conversation than Bishop Robert Barron, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. During our conversation, we talk about David as an example of biblical masculinity, individual sovereignty vs. God's sovereignty, literal and figurative interpretations of the bible, Jesus Christ as a fighter, and choosing to live the commandments. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The great narratives How David emerges Lessons of humility A willingness to engage Man's capability to protect Engaging through non-violence After the resurrection Listening to the Lord The sovereignty of God Governing your family Discerning your mission Twelve-year-old Jesus Finding true power Clinging to worldly power The discipline of the gym Respect for your freedom Choosing your character Building a moral wall Legitimate self-care Biblical literacy BISHOP ROBERT BARRON Gents, I've been looking forward to introducing my guest to you today. His name is Bishop Robert Barron. He currently serves as the auxiliary bishop to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and is the founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. He's been asked to speak at Facebook, Google, and Amazon on the subject of religion, discussed and debated with Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro, and serves as a religious correspondent for NBC, Fox News, and CNN. In addition, he reaches nearly 2,000,000 people on his social media accounts and over 350,000 people receive his daily email reflections. Obviously, the man is very influential and, during our discussion today, I think you'll hear why. LEGACY Men (specifically fathers), we are coming down to the wire on closing down registration for the LEGACY EXPERIENCE and I want you and your son to be there. How to Become More Mindful and Present | DONNIE VINCENT
EWith as much as we are inundated within our daily lives, it's becoming increasingly difficult to be completely present and mindful of the people and things that really matter. In fact (and in fairness to today's conversation), this podcast could actually be distracting you from what it is you should be doing. Today, I'm joined by my friend Donnie Vincent. Many of you know him as an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and conservationist but we tackle a different (but equally important) conversation today – being present and mindful of who you are and what you're after. We cover social media, finding work you love, dealing with a lack of confidence, taking care of yourself first, and ensuring you're focused on just the right things. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Bridging the gap Sharing the experience Uncovering your path Capturing imagery Celebrating the wins Smoke and mirrors Collecting shiny things Discovering who you are Living a positive life Facing the pressure Moving your body Investing in yourself Fighting like hell The foundation of truth DONNIE VINCENT Many of you know my guest today, Donnie Vincent but I think you'll see and hear a side of him that you haven't heard before. Donnie is an explorer, a biologist, a conservationist, and a sportsman. And, I think after listening to our conversation, you'll hear how thoughtful and intentional he is about how exactly he lives his life. Donnie is an incredible storyteller and through his media company, Sicmanta, he has a powerful gift in bringing people into his outdoor adventures and connecting them with his passion for the wild. After hearing him today, you're going to understand what I mean and walk away inspired to lean into your life more fully. LEGACY My legacy is something that is very important to me. I'm sure it is for you too. Last week, I had the opportunity to spend 4 days with my two oldest boys and, as we laughed and joked, shared stories, and had an adventure, I couldn't help but wonder if I am doing enough to prepare them for life as their father. In fact, it's the thing that keeps me up and night more than anything else. I'm sure that, as a father, you feel very much the same way. For this reason, I launched the LEGACY EXPERIENCE three years ago as a 3 ½ day event to bring together fathers and sons around a group of strong, competitive, competent men, lessons, and resources. I want to invite you to claim one of the last 2 spots remaining for our third installment in Maine on June 11-14, 2020. Becoming a Warrior Poet | JOHN LOVELL
It seems to me that a lot of men have a hard time striking the balance between warrior and philosopher. For a long time, I was under the impression that men are either one or the other – the strong, rugged archetype or the smart, intellectual archetype. My guest today, John Lovell, founder of Warrior Poet Society, makes the case for why and how we, as men can be both. This has been a conversation a long time in the works and John has been requested by you guys countless times. We discuss what it means to be strong and smart, how to apply philosophy practically in our day to day lives, a basic introduction into firearms for everyday carry, and what it means and how to become a Warrior Poet. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Failure of men Qualified advice Evaluating feedback The pain of jealousy Being under authority First-world problems Appreciating food Beating yourself up Tools for training Force on force Mentorship Shoulder to shoulder The average gunfight Selecting guns JOHN LOVELL My guest today is someone who you guys have requested so many times and, fortunately, I had the opportunity to sit down with him at SHOT Show in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago. Our conversation was bound to happen as his organization, Warrior Poet Society is so closely related to what we're doing here with Order of Man. John is a special operations war veteran having served multiple combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. He's also served as a Christian missionary to Central America – which is a testament to the duality of his Warrior Poet philosophy. And, on top of that, John teaches tactical pistol, rifle, and small unit tactics, and many other classes around the U.S. We had a lot of fun during our conversation and I can't imagine it will be long before we do it again. Enjoy. LEGACY I made a post on Twitter the other day stating that, "A woman can teach a boy to be a good man but not how to be good at being a man – the distinction between morality and capability. Morality alone is not enough. A man must be capable. And, that is the responsibility of the elder men." I believe so much in that statement that we created an experience to help put it into practice. It's called the Legacy Experience and it's designed to help you as a father usher your son into manhood by introducing him to the frameworks he'll need to thrive. Our event is held June 11-14th in Maine and over the course of 3 ½ days, you and your son will be competing with other men, developing new skills, and forging deeper bonds together. The Right Kind of Crazy | CLINT EMERSON
EWe all know the world can be a dangerous place and if a man hasn't prepared himself for all that may come up, frankly, he's shirking his role and responsibility as a man. It's in our nature, after all, to protect, provide, and preside and yet so many men seem utterly incapable of doing so. Today, I am joined by a friend, repeat guest, and former Navy SEAL, Clint Emerson. We talk about our nature as men, how society has seemed to go soft, why hazing in the right context is good for men and culture, keeping ourselves and others safe in dangerous environments, and our need to evolve as men. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Time in the Military The SEAL brand Making bad decisions SEAL culture Proving yourself What it's really about The "new guy" mentality Fulfilling your mission Violence Situational awareness Following the herd Train your brain Simple preparedness Macro vs. micro-skills The ultimate equalizer The great good A creative outlet An exchange of value Crisis management CLINT EMERSON As I mentioned before, my guest today is former Navy SEAL, New York Times Best Selling Author, and security specialist, Clint Emerson. Clint has combined his more than 20 years of military service to provide some of the best personal and corporate safety and security services. He is also the author of 100 Deadly Skills and his newest book, The Right Kind of Crazy: My Life as a Navy SEAL, Covert Operative, and Boy Scout from Hell. LEGACY You've heard me talking about the Legacy Experience over the past several months and I'm glad to tell you that we still have a few spots available for fathers and their sons between the ages of 8-15. I have quite a few people ask if I'm scared to raise boys in today's society and I typically respond with something like, "With the type of boys society is currently raising, my sons are going to be kings." I know you feel the same way although you may not feel like you have everything you need to ensure that's the case. When you join us on June 11-14th, 2020, we're going to equip you and your son with the tools, frameworks, and instruction to ensure your son becomes that man you have a desire for him to become.
