Penguin Bloom: The Origin Story
This interview was originally published in 2016... In 2013, mother-of-three Sam Bloom’s world changed. A freak accident on a family holiday in Thailand left her paralysed from the chest down. Her three young sons and her husband Cameron rallied around her. But it wasn’t until the family found a baby magpie who had fallen from his tree that things started looking up for the Blooms. Cameron wrote about Penguin, the Magpie who pulled his family from a dark, dark place. An Intimate Conversation About Friendship
A reason, a season or a lifetime. They say friendships only fall into three categories, and these tend to be them. Mia Freedman and Bec Sparrow's friendship started for a reason. They met 10 years ago, bonding over the grief of the daughters they had both lost via miscarriage or stillbirth. And over the years, their friendship continued to grow. Through work, an interstate move, more children, another miscarriage, and the many ups and downs of life. But in 2020, like with a lot of friendships, Mia and Bec struggled. BONUS: Rick Morton Was Born Into Rural Royalty. Suddenly, He Was Dirt Poor
We're dropping into your feed to reshare a special episode of No Filter with you. Earlier this week on No Filter you heard from Rick Morton, all about money. Well, if you’d like to hear more about Rick’s back story, here’s a chat Mia had with him a few years ago about his remarkable life… Rick Morton was born the son of a cattle baron in far western Queensland. His backyard consisted of hundreds of thousands of acres. He went to school by school of the air. And his family home was 500kms from the nearest town. But in just 24 hours, Rick’s life went from being something of an idyllic outback childhood to poverty. So how do you go from rural royalty to dirt poor? What’s it like growing up gay and closeted in a small town? Rick has written a book about his life called 100 Years Of Dirt and he joins his old boss, Mia, to talk about it... Rick Morton On Growing Up Poor
Rick Morton is a journalist and author. He’s also learnt to memorise phone numbers. Specifically ones from debt collectors. Because up until recently, Rick was very bad with money. So bad, that he used to borrow from everyone around him. Rick was born the son of a Cattle baron in Central Queensland. But he grew up dirt poor in housing commission, and he’s spent his life overspending the money he has. His new book On Money examines the meaning of money to him and others, and looks into how society often views money as a substitute for morality. This is Rick's story. 2020: The Year Of Little Griefs & How To Process Them
Christmas. It’s often talked about as the most wonderful time of the year. But at the end of an unspeakable year, it feels like we are all crawling to the finish line that is Christmas in 2020. And for a lot of us, it’s filled with a feeling of grief. Grief for a year we didn’t have. Grief for family we can’t see. And grief for those we lost. Two years ago I sat down with grief counselor Petrea King to talk about how to face Christmas when life is not as you know it. She’s counselled over 120,000 people who are living with cancer and other life-challenging illnesses, or dealing with grief, loss, trauma and tragedy through her foundation, Quest For Life. And because this year has really been life as we don’t know it, I thought it was time to talk to Petrea again. About grief. And about lowering the bar this Christmas. Because it’s okay not to be okay. Here’s Petrea. What Happened To Stan Walker
When you think of Stan Walker, you probably think of Australian Idol, and that catchy song ‘Black Box’ he released straight after he won it in 2009. Stan was 18 when he started on Idol, and 19 by the time he won it. And to most of us, he was just Stan Walker from Australian Idol; the boy who made it big. But what we didn’t know, and what we wouldn’t know until years later was that there was so much more to Stan’s story. Now, at 30, he's a survivor in more ways than one. Just a heads up, this conversation deals with family violence. If you or someone you know needs help, please call 1800RESPECT now. Food is so much more than just fuel, it’s an excuse to express who we are and what connects us. What I Eat When is a Mamamia podcast that’s all about meals, moments, and memories. And on our first episode host Silvia Colloca is joined by self-confessed 'Crap Housewife' Jessica Rowe. So what does Jess eat when she's on holiday? Or when she's pregnant? And why does she match her hats with the dinner she's making? Although she doesn't like cooking, as she explains to Silvia, she still likes eating. And food holds a lot of memories for her. As you're about to find out... Inside The Life Of A Secret Alcoholic
For the past 5 years, today's guest has kept a secret. She’d wake up and start drinking to get through the day. She’d leave work for a coffee break and buy a bottle of white wine. She’d consume roughly around 80 standard drinks, within one week. Heidi first sought help in 2018 for her alcohol addiction but she didn’t tell anyone. Then last year she came across a call out on social media looking for people to participate in a free six month program if they were struggling with addiction. So she applied. That program would go on to be filmed for SBS’s documentary series Addicted Australia. And all of a sudden, Heidi’s very private addiction became very very public. This is her story. The Day Shanna Realised She Was An Alcoholic
What's the difference between a party girl and an alcoholic? For today's guest, it was about 20 years, a series of traumas, and a large dose of denial. Shanna Whan finally realised she was in serious trouble when she 'came to' in the Emergency Department after being found crumpled and bleeding at the bottom of a flight of stairs. You see for a long time, like many ''high-functioning'' alcoholics, Shan convinced herself it wasn't a serious problem because she was a successful business woman by day, and didn't drink until ''after five'' .... Growing up in rural Australia, heavy drinking was a culturally ingrained and glorified rite of passage she embraced wholeheartedly .. to try and fit in. But it wasn’t until her rock bottom in early 2015 that she knew she had to reach out and ask for help and take action, or die young. Fast forward six years, 15,000 volunteer hours, starting over from scratch, endless failures, knockbacks, and opposition - and now Shanna is the founder and CEO of a national charity called Sober In The Country. This is her story... THE END BITS: Check out Sober In The Country here - https://www.soberinthecountry.org/. Parenting, Polyamory & Surviving A Refugee Camp
Pauline Nguyen has lived a very big life. When she was 3 years old her family left Vietnam by boat. Once in Australia, however, things weren’t easy for the Nguyen kids, and Pauline fled home when she was a teenager. These days, Pauline is an award winning author, spiritual entrepreneur and co-founder of Sydney's Red Lantern restaurant. Magazine Queens: The Editors Who Influenced A Generation
From the 1980s to the 2000s, before the Internet arrived, magazines were tops. Cosmopolitan, Cleo, Dolly, Harper's Bazaar... there were so many. They were filled with information on how to be a girl, or a woman, alongside glossy shots of models like Elle Macpherson, Sonia Klein and Claudia Schiffer. But sadly, all these magazines and the brands behind them are now gone. Deborah Thomas and Paula Joye have, between them, worked at, launched or edited pretty much every major magazine in Australia. Deborah was Mia's first boss when she started at Cleo and Paula and Mia shared an office there for years. In this episode of No Filter, Mia, Deborah and Paula take a trip down memory lane and talk about everything from photoshoots with famous 90's models to working for the infamous Packer family to life after magazines. Loneliness: The Silent Epidemic
Loneliness. In Australia, it impacts one in four people. But since COVID, there’s been a lot more people across the country and the world feeling alone. Even though they might be connected to friends on group chat or living with their partners or families… that feeling? It’s still there. And it’s not often talked about. But that’s something that today’s guest is trying to change. Dr. Vivek Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States from 2014-2017. Essentially, he was America’s doctor. He dealt with the country’s most urgent public health issues. In 2017, he turned his attention to chronic stress and isolation, and earlier this year, he released a book called Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, which is all about the silent epidemic of loneliness. On this episode of No Filter, Dr. Murthy and Mia discuss the three types of loneliness and the actions we can take to make sure we’re living a connected life. If you or someone you know needs support, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14. THE END BITS You can buy Vivek's book here - https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/PLD1R. GET IN TOUCH: Feedback? We’re listening! What Happened To Sophie Delezio
In 2003, a two-year-old girl captured the hearts of Australians when she was involved in an accident at her NSW childcare centre. Her name was Sophie Delezio. A vehicle crashed into the centre and caught alight, trapping Sophie and burning 85% of her body. After that accident, she lost both her legs below the knee, her right hand and ear. Three years later, in May 2006, Sophie was hit by a car as her nanny pushed her wheelchair across the road. The car threw her 18 metres from her wheelchair and resulted in a broken jaw, broken ribs, fractured collarbone and a punctured lung as well as bleeding on her brain and a heart attack. But after all of that, she lived. Oh boy did she live. And this is her story. --- To find out more about Sophie's charity, Day of Difference, head to https://dayofdifference.org.au/. BONUS: William McInnes On Being The Best Single Dad Possible
Today is Father's Day. And whether it's a happy, sad or complicated day for you, here at No Filter we wanted to share a special episode that serves as a reminder of how powerful the bond between fathers and their children can be. You might remember William McInnes from Seachange, or Blue Heelers, but what you may not know about him is that he can really tell a story. He’s been doing it for the past 30 years, first as an actor and later as a writer. William has written over 11 books. A lot of them, around the themes of growing up in Australia. And his latest, Fatherhood, is a personal tribute to Aussie dads everywhere. William lost the love of his life, his wife Sarah in 2011. He raised their two children, Clem, and Stella by himself. Dotty Charles On Outrage: Why Everyone Is Shouting And No One Is Talking
It all started with a holiday to Thailand and a hoodie with a picture of a monkey on it. That’s how Dotty Charles knew that the world had reached peak outrage. Dotty, also known as Ashley, Amplify Dot or A.Dot, is an English rapper, former BBC presenter and broadcaster. She's just started a new job as Lead Cultural Curator of Black Music for Apple and she's written a book called Outraged: Why Everyone Is Shouting But No One Is Talking. Dotty’s message is clear: there are many valid things that we should be outraged about but if we’re outraged about everything all the time, outrage itself becomes almost meaningless. And nothing changes. So how do we break this outrage cycle of addiction so many people seem to be stuck in? And how do you talk about outrage culture without being destroyed yourself? You can buy Dotty's book here. Listen to our newest podcast Me After You here. GET IN TOUCH: Feedback? We’re listening! The One Thing Julia Gillard Wished She’d Done Differently
Julia Gillard has been busy this year. Very busy. She’s written a book called ‘Women and Leadership’ with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala where they speak to 8 female leaders including Jacinda Ardern and Hilary Clinton about the impact of gender on the treatment of leaders. She's also the host of 'A Podcast of One's Own', where she leads thoughtful but fun discussions with well-known female (and some male) leaders from different industries around the world. At 30, Sophie Cachia Turned Her 'Perfect' Life Upside Down
To her many Instagram followers, it seemed like the 'Young Mummy' Sophie Cachia had a pretty rosy life. She had a successful influencer career and pyjama business that she had built off her Young Mummy blog, which she'd started after marrying an AFL player called Jarryd Cachia and having the first of their two kids at just 22 years old. But like most things on social media, there was a different story happening behind the scenes. Sophie was starting to question the life and identity she'd built for herself over the years. All of it. So, she opened up her marriage. She started dating women. And everything changed. Recently, Sophie was listening to Mia's interview with Glennon Doyle and nodding along furiously. It was a voice memo that made this interview happen. Rebekah Robertson: The Trailblazing Mother Of A Trans Child
Rebekah Robertson had twins. Both assigned male at birth. Despite what was written on their birth certificates, Rebekah’s twins were very different to one another. And so began the story of a little person called Georgie who knew deep inside that she was a girl. In this conversation Rebekah explains when she first realised Georgie was transgender and how she handled everything from school to clothes to friends and doctors. She also talks about why the way she has parented her trans child is the exception and how that breaks her heart. Rebekah is an actress, activist and author. She is the founder of Transcend, a charity for families of transgender children and she’s written a book called About A Girl about how she raised Georgie and how she navigated a safe path for her through a world that still struggles to understand what trans kids need to survive and thrive. Teresa Palmer's Very Un-Hollywood Life
When Teresa Palmer was nineteen, she walked into Hollywood's biggest talent agency and told them she was happy to have a career, but her biggest plans involved being a mother. And, she hasn't gone back on that. Even though she's scaled the heights of life as a Hollywood movie star, appearing in movies with people like Adam Sandler and Rosario Dawson, it's her family that are the focus of her life. She's in a happy blended family who spend their lives between her hometown Adelaide and Los Angeles. There's the three children she gave birth to - Forest, Bodhi and Poet, and there's Mark's first son Isaac, the stepson that made Teresa sure she wanted to be a mother. Now Teresa's adding 'author' to the many strings on her already packed bow, after writing 'Zen Mama' with her close friend Sarah Wright Olsen, which talks about everything from birth to pregnancy loss and the raising of small children. Bikram: Yogi. Guru. Predator.
This interview was recorded in January 2020. This is a story about fame and power and money and celebrity. And…..yoga. And the point at which all of those things meet is at the bare feet of a man named Bikram Choudhury. Wearing signature tiny black Speedos and his long hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, Bikram Choudhury was the king of an empire built on sweat, obsessive devotion and, as we learn in a recent Netflix documentary called Bikram, sexual harassment, rape and maniacal control. This documentary was made by Academy-Award winning Australian filmmaker Eva Orner, who talks to Mia about the story of Bikram, what he is doing now, and why he hasn't yet been punished for his many crimes.
