The Day Marguerite Edwards Didn't Pick Up Her Kids From School
The day Marguerite Edwards died began like any other day. The family woke up, got their 3 daughters ready for school. Marguerite’s husband Iain headed off to work at his Orthodontist clinic which was a 5-minute drive up the road. Marguerite dropped the girls at high school and went to an aerobics class. It was the ‘80s after all. But at 6 pm that night Iain got a phone call from his neighbour. Marguerite hadn’t picked the girls up from school, so the neighbour had collected them. When the neighbour had gone to the house to check on her friend Marguerite, she found the front door open and blood visible on the carpet. Iain raced home, entered his house, walked up the stairs to their bedroom and found his precious wife lying on the floor. At just 41 years old, Marguerite Edwards had been murdered. And life as Iain and his girls knew it, really did change forever... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. CREDITS: Host: Mia Freedman With thanks to special guest Dr Iain Edwards. At 32, Bridie O'Donnell Decided To Become An Elite Athlete
If you’re OK living a life of frequent and often crushing disappointment, you’ll be able to handle a career as a professional cyclist. That’s the advice Dr Bridie O’Donnell was given by a fellow cyclist when she decided to make cycling her career. She was not at the point in her life’s journey where you would expect someone to choose the path of a professional athlete - she was 32 years old, a doctor and, as one coach told her bluntly, she was ‘too old, too fat and too slow' to make it in one of the toughest, most physically and emotionally demanding sports on earth. But she did make it. Bridie became a world record breaker after taking an astonishing leap of faith, with no previous history in the sport, she decided to become an elite cyclist. Melanie Dimmitt Didn’t Expect Motherhood To Be Like This

Mel needed an emergency caesar, and Arlo was left without oxygen for 10 minutes. Six months later, Mel and her partner Ro found out that Arlo was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Mel didn’t know what to do. Or how to handle it. There was a fear around everything. From the way she spoke about Arlo to how she felt about her situation. She couldn’t find anything to read that she could relate to. So she decided to write it. In a book... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. Amy Sheppard’s #KissMyFatAss Movement
Brisbane based singer/songwriter Amy Sheppard spent years altering the way she looked in her Instagram photos. Stopped smoothing her legs. She stopped making herself look airbrushed. And instead, she started a movement called Kiss My Fat Ass - that promotes normal features such as cellulite, rolls, and scars. Bec Rosen On Why Hamish McLaren Deserves To Go To Jail
On the 20th of June this year, con-man Hamish McLaren was sentenced to 16 years in prison after stealing more than $7.5 million from his victims, including his ex-wife Bec Rosen. Bec was a single mum who had just ended a bad marriage and, along with her three young sons, she’d moved to Blueys Beach on the NSW North Coast. Bec’s family were in the early stages of rebuilding their lives when Hamish appeared and made himself indispensable. So indispensable in fact, that Bec and Hamish got married in 2011. 19 Years Ago, Everything Changed For Benjamin Law
When Pauline Hanson was elected into politics in the mid-90s, author Benjamin Law was in high school on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. He’d grown up in a very white area. But up until that point, he hadn’t really considered his race. Sure, he was Asian Australian, but that had never really been a problem. And then, Pauline Hanson made her maiden speech in Parliament and all of a sudden, Ben’s ethnicity was associated with something negative. His family was seen as different....He was Asian Australian, his parents were divorced and he was gay. Ben Law has gone on to become one of Australia’s most respected journalists. He’s also the creator of the hit SBS show The Family Law, which is now in its third season. And he’s been in a relationship with his partner Scott for more than half his life. Georgie Dent’s Nervous Breakdown Changed Her Life For Good
When Georgie Dent was asked when her nervous breakdown began, she had to think. Really think. Was it at 19 when she found herself diagnosed with a disease she’d never heard of? Was it a few months later when she was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease? Or was it all of those things, combined? And did it really matter? Because it happened. At the age of 24, Georgie Dent’s life fell apart. And she found herself in a psychiatric hospital. Chloe Shorten Could Be Our Next First Lady
Today on No Filter, we're revisiting an episode that Mia did with Chloe Shorten on the 26th of April, 2017.... Chloe Shorten has attracted a lot of attention over the last few weeks. As the wife of Bill Shorten - who will potentially be our next Prime Minister - many have said that in this election campaign, they wished they could vote for Chloe. Chloe is a businesswoman, author, daughter of former Governor-General Quentin Bryce and mother of three. As a kid, she dreamed that she’d grow up, meet the love of her life, get married, have kids and grow old …..with that same person. But, like one in three marriages, Chloe’s life didn’t work out that way because her relationship fell apart. When Chloe Shorten separated from her husband of 10 years, she was concerned that it might affect her two young children. Then, when she remarried Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and blended her family, she got even more concerned. So, she went hunting for help. For books, for studies, for information about the best way to do everything from “the talk” when you sit your kids down to tell them their Mum and Dad aren’t going to live together anymore to introducing new partners, navigating custody and even, eventually introducing new step-siblings or new babies. She didn’t find a lot. So she made her own... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. Show Notes Your host is Mia Freedman. With thanks to special guests Chloe Shorten. Why Mother-In-Law Relationships Can Be High Drama
If you’ve ever been in a romantic relationship of any kind and you’ve been together a while, you will have probably encountered your partner’s mother. The image we have of a mother-in-law is pretty grim, generally. They don’t get great press. But for many women, their relationship with their mother-in-law is one of the most fraught in their lives and there are good reasons for this! They are intimately connected to your partner and so are you, obviously, but to one another, you’re pretty much strangers. Sally Hepworth noticed this when she started collecting stories for her latest novel, aptly called The Mother-In-Law. Women would tell her stories about their partners mothers bringing over a raw chicken after they’d just had a baby, or of mothers-in-law who have keys to their child's house and use them regularly. And so, her fifth novel was born. Sally is one of Liane Moriarty’s favourite Australian authors - she’s written five books, she has 3 children and she’s spent a long time talking to people who had issues with their mothers-in-law. So what is it about this relationship that makes it so high-drama? Click here to subscribe to No Filter. "Cat Person": How A Short Story Changed Kristen Roupenian's Life
In December 2017, Kristen Roupenian’s life changed forever when her short story in The New Yorker went viral. ‘Cat Person’, which was published in The New Yorker‘s December 11 issue, navigates a brief relationship between a 20-year-old university student named Margot, and an older man – Robert – who she meets while working in a movie theatre candy bar. You can read it here: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/12/11/cat-person It’s not a complex plot. But, like all the best pieces of fiction, it articulates aspects of life and culture in a way the rest of us have never quite been able to manage.
