You may know Julia from her columns in Australian newspapers and the New York Times and from the TV where she hosts daily current affairs show, The Drum on the ABC. She’s also written several books including an award winning biography of Queen Victoria. Today I’m calling up one of my best friends, Amelia Lester who some of you may know if you listened to the podcast we used to host together about Trump’s America called Tell Me It’s Going To Be Ok. Before they met one another, Kate Jones and Mandy Hose were both pregnant with twins at the same time. They each gave birth prematurely and after white-knuckling their way through the terrifying world of the newborn intensive care unit, eventually got to bring their babies home. In time, both Mandy and Kate's twins would be diagnosed with additional needs and so began a new life for their two families; lives that neither was prepared for and which would take them both to some really unexpected places. The similarities in their situations are almost unbelievable.  Somehow, Kate and Mandy found each other and forged a friendship in fire. But oh, how they make each other laugh. Ellie Cole lost her leg to cancer when she was just 3 years old and shortly after, her family received a list of things from the doctor that she wouldn't be able to do. The list included things like rollerblading and riding a bike but Ellie had other plans. Ellie doesn't remember much about losing her leg and she grew up with a family who treated her like everyone else, so she set about ticking off every single item on that doctor's list. It's not actually true but she reckons that answer is easier for people to accept than the truth. Welcome to our summer series, where we play you some of our favourite episodes that you might have missed or might want to revisit. A woman’s work is never done. And author Gemma Hartley knows this. Whether she’s at home or in the office, there’s a whole layer of labour done predominantly by women that most men can’t even see. Emotional labour is being the person who notices problems, delegates solutions and makes sure life goes smoothly for everyone around her. It’s noticing there’s barely any milk left and then doing something about it - and changing the toilet paper roll when it’s run out. This work is invisible and exhausting at the same time. And it’s not just something experienced by mothers or women in relationships. A couple of years ago Gemma Hartley wrote an essay about emotional labour after a particularly disastrous Mothers Day. When Louisa Hope walked into Sydney’s Lindt Cafe 5 years ago she didn't expect her life would change forever. Louisa is one of the Sydney Siege survivors. She and her mother were held at gunpoint and trapped for 17 hours before the gunman executed cafe manager Tori Johnston on his knees in front of her. Another hostage, Katrina Dawson was killed moments later in gunfire when police stormed the cafe. Louisa joins Mia Freedman to talk through what happened that day and how she feels five years on. Towards the end of the siege, Louisa was shot in the foot and went to The Prince of Wales Hospital where she spent 3 months as a patient. For 10 years Nicole Lee and her children were trapped, living with an abusive partner who was also Nicole's primary carer. Nicole uses a wheelchair and what began as a whirlwind romance turned toxic after the birth of their first child. The way out of this prison for Nicole was unexpected and the consequences were life-long for everyone involved. The day Marguerite Edwards died began like any other day. The family woke up, got their 3 daughters ready for school. Marguerite’s husband Iain headed off to work at his Orthodontist clinic which was a 5-minute drive up the road. Marguerite dropped the girls at high school and went to an aerobics class. It was the ‘80s after all.   But at 6 pm that night Iain got a phone call from his neighbour. Marguerite hadn’t picked the girls up from school, so the neighbour had collected them. When the neighbour had gone to the house to check on her friend Marguerite, she found the front door open and blood visible on the carpet. Iain raced home, entered his house, walked up the stairs to their bedroom and found his precious wife lying on the floor.  At just 41 years old, Marguerite Edwards had been murdered. If you’re OK living a life of frequent and often crushing disappointment, you’ll be able to handle a career as a professional cyclist. That’s the advice Dr Bridie O’Donnell was given by a fellow cyclist when she decided to make cycling her career. She was not at the point in her life’s journey where you would expect someone to choose the path of a professional athlete - she was 32 years old, a doctor and, as one coach told her bluntly, she was ‘too old, too fat and too slow' to make it in one of the toughest, most physically and emotionally demanding sports on earth. But she did make it. Bridie became a world record breaker after taking an astonishing leap of faith, with no previous history in the sport, she decided to become an elite cyclist. Trinny Woodall spent the early 2000s giving women makeovers with her partner in fashion crime, Susannah.  Their books and TV series, What Not to Wear, were iconic in the 2000s.  Now Trinny has a makeup company called Trinny London, which she launched at the age of 53 after her show was cancelled and her income dried up overnight. Trinny has had had a lot of ups and downs in her life. She tried for a long time to get pregnant before finally having her daughter Lyla when she was 40.  Then after 10 years of marriage, Trinny divorced Lilly's father Johnny in 2008. But they remained good friends until tragically, Johnny, who battled with addiction and other issues, took his own life. Why has this happened to me? Will I ever stop comparing my child? What will our future look like? She hadn’t planned to have two kids under 3,  but after the birth of her firstborn, Arlo, she didn’t have a choice. When Arlo was born things didn’t go exactly to plan. Surprising for a birth story, I know. But this one was more unusual than others. Mel needed an emergency caesar, and Arlo was left without oxygen for 10 minutes.  Six months later, Mel and her partner Ro found out that Arlo was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Mel didn’t know what to do. Or how to handle it. There was a fear around everything. From the way she spoke about Arlo to how she felt about her situation. On the 12th of September 2014, a mother called 000 to report her son missing. Five years later, he still hasn't been found. William Tyrrell, the little boy in the spiderman suit, was born in 2011 to his biological parents whose names we aren’t legally allowed to tell you. At 9 months, William was placed into foster care with his older sister and at 3, William was playing outside his foster grandmother’s house in Kendall NSW when he went missing.  So what actually happened on that day? Rachel Griffiths has been telling stories for the past 25 years of her life.  Whether it’s through movies like Muriel’s Wedding or TV shows like Six Feet Under or Brothers and Sisters - each of which she starred in for years, she’s built her career out of playing interesting characters. Pia Miranda has a cracker of a year. Until recently, she was best known for her starring role as Josephine in the cult Australian coming-of-age film 'Looking For Alibrandi' where she played a schoolgirl. She's worked solidly for the past 20 years since then as an actress and voiceover artist and she's had two kids.But in early 2019, Pia received an email that would change her and her family's life. It was an invitation to be on Australian Survivor, the reality show where you get dropped on a deserted island and you have to....survive, via a series of physically and mentally grueling challenges, with almost no food. At 46 years old and far from a professional athlete, Pia played hard. Hard enough to win. And what happened next came as a brutal shock, on that she's still trying to process. It was 2018. Late at night. Melissa Hopkins was sitting in her bed. She was about to reveal something deeply personal about herself to the world, something that she had been suffering with for over 20 years but had never spoken about publicly, but on the eve of R U OK day in 2018, a suicide prevention day in Australia that aims to start conversations about mental health, Melissa decided to speak out. Tully Smyth rose to fame after appearing on Big Brother in 2013.  She also unintentionally became the show's villain when she cheated on her longtime girlfriend with a guy she met in the house.   Since then, Tully has lived a lot of her life in the public eye and has carved out a living as an influencer.  A term she really struggles with.   Tully is the host of our brand new podcast, Social Squad, which goes behind-the-scenes of the perfectly curated lives of some of Australia's most successful influencers.
