Chloe Shorten Could Be Our Next First Lady

Today on No Filter, we're revisiting an episode that Mia did with Chloe Shorten on the 26th of April, 2017.... Chloe Shorten has attracted a lot of attention over the last few weeks. As the wife of Bill Shorten - who will potentially be our next Prime Minister - many have said that in this election campaign, they wished they could vote for Chloe. Chloe is a businesswoman, author, daughter of former Governor-General Quentin Bryce and mother of three. As a kid, she dreamed that she’d grow up, meet the love of her life, get married, have kids and grow old …..with that same person. But, like one in three marriages, Chloe’s life didn’t work out that way because her relationship fell apart. When Chloe Shorten separated from her husband of 10 years, she was concerned that it might affect her two young children. Then, when she remarried Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and blended her family, she got even more concerned. So, she went hunting for help. For books, for studies, for information about the best way to do everything from “the talk” when you sit your kids down to tell them their Mum and Dad aren’t going to live together anymore to introducing new partners, navigating custody and even, eventually introducing new step-siblings or new babies. She didn’t find a lot. So she made her own... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. Show Notes Your host is Mia Freedman. With thanks to special guests Chloe Shorten. Why Mother-In-Law Relationships Can Be High Drama

If you’ve ever been in a romantic relationship of any kind and you’ve been together a while, you will have probably encountered your partner’s mother. The image we have of a mother-in-law is pretty grim, generally. They don’t get great press. But for many women, their relationship with their mother-in-law is one of the most fraught in their lives and there are good reasons for this! They are intimately connected to your partner and so are you, obviously, but to one another, you’re pretty much strangers. Sally Hepworth noticed this when she started collecting stories for her latest novel, aptly called The Mother-In-Law. Women would tell her stories about their partners mothers bringing over a raw chicken after they’d just had a baby, or of mothers-in-law who have keys to their child's house and use them regularly. And so, her fifth novel was born. Sally is one of Liane Moriarty’s favourite Australian authors - she’s written five books, she has 3 children and she’s spent a long time talking to people who had issues with their mothers-in-law. So what is it about this relationship that makes it so high-drama? Click here to subscribe to No Filter. "Cat Person": How A Short Story Changed Kristen Roupenian's Life

In December 2017, Kristen Roupenian’s life changed forever when her short story in The New Yorker went viral. ‘Cat Person’, which was published in The New Yorker‘s December 11 issue, navigates a brief relationship between a 20-year-old university student named Margot, and an older man – Robert – who she meets while working in a movie theatre candy bar. You can read it here:  https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/12/11/cat-person It’s not a complex plot. But, like all the best pieces of fiction, it articulates aspects of life and culture in a way the rest of us have never quite been able to manage. It resonated with millions of women around the world and was just before #MeToo really took off. But it also turned Kristen's life upside down. So what does her life look like two years on? She joins Mia now... How Emotional Labour Makes Women Feel Exhausted

A woman’s work is never done. And author Gemma Hartley knows this. Whether she’s at home or in the office, there’s a whole layer of labour done predominantly by women that most men can’t even see. Emotional labour is being the person who notices problems, delegates solutions and makes sure life goes smoothly for everyone around her. It’s noticing there’s barely any milk left and then doing something about it - and changing the toilet paper roll when it’s run out. This work is invisible and exhausting at the same time. And it’s not just something experienced by mothers or women in relationships. A couple of years ago Gemma Hartley wrote an essay about emotional labour after a particularly disastrous Mothers Day. It went viral and it led to her writing a whole book on the subject - Gemma’s book is called Fed Up and she joins me now to talk about it... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. The First Thing You Should Say To Carly Findlay Is Hello

If people stop you in the street, what’s the first thing they say to you? "Hello!"? Or "How are you?" For author and journalist Carly Findlay her experience is very different. Carly was born with a rare genetic skin disorder called Ichthyosis, which affects approximately one in 200,000 newborns.  Ichthyosis causes the skin to build up and scale and when people see Carly they often ask what happened to her.  Did she get burnt?  Has she had microdermabrasion? They often think by asking, they're being kind.  But in her memoir Say Hello, she points out that despite people's best intentions that's how it feels... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. The Lie Working Mothers Tell

When Christine Armstrong, author of The Mother of All Jobs, became a mother it never occurred to her she would have to give up her job. At the time, she was working in London in a high level corporate job. But after the birth of her first daughter, she realised being full-time mum AND a full-time employee was bloody hard. So, she started looking for answers. She interviewed other working mothers and found, unsurprisingly, that she wasn’t alone. Christine realised there was a conspiracy of silence from senior women about "having it all". But that it was the system that was broken, not the people in it. Three daughters, and a few jobs later, her book, The Mother of All Jobs, was born. And she joins Mia to talk about it now... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. William McInnes: Being The Best Single Dad Possible

You might remember William McInnes from Seachange, or Blue Heelers, but what you may not know about him is that he can really tell a story. He’s been doing it for the past 30 years, first as an actor and later as a writer. William has written over 11 books. A lot of them, around the themes of growing up in Australia.  And his latest, Fatherhood, is a personal tribute to Aussie dads everywhere. Mia’s conversation with William was a rollercoaster. One minute they were laughing uncontrollably, the next they were crying. William lost the love of his life, his wife Sarah in 2011. He raised their two children, Clem, and Stella by himself. He knows hardship and he isn’t afraid to share what he’s learned or get honest about his feelings.  This interview isn’t about grief or loss, it’s about a man doing the best he can for his family. He's 98 And Surprisingly, He's The Happiest Man On Earth

When you meet 98-year-old Holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku, it’s hard not to be happy. He’s full of life, advice and stories about a world few people remember. A world few people can imagine. A world many people want to forget about. But not Eddie. Because that dark world ended up giving him the biggest gift he could have asked for; the gift of life.  On the 10th of November 1938, Eddie Jaku’s world changed forever when a group of Nazi’s knocked on his front door. Eddie was a Jew living in Germany, and for the next 12 years he was in and out of concentration camps, including Auschwitz.  He lost his mother and father and escaped and was caught, countless times. The Woman Who's Lived In The Wild For 8 Years

Mia’s back with more candid conversations that count in 2019, and she’s kicking it off with a woman who couldn’t be more opposite to her. Best Of: Remembering Jane McGrath

Welcome to the No Filter summer series, where we look back at some of our most popular interviews over the past 3 years. As the Pink Test is about to kick off in Sydney, we thought we'd take a listen to Jane McGrath's best friend Tracy Bevan... As our Australian Cricketers turn the SCG into a blushing meadow for the Pink Test, it's a reminder of Jane McGrath's legacy. The mother of two, and wife to cricket fast bowler Glenn McGrath formed a foundation that has changed lives. But she also forged a friendship like no other.  This is not a story about breast cancer, it's the story of Jane McGrath and her hilarious best friend, Tracy Bevan. The Day Sarah Hanson Young Refused To Be Slut Shamed

You’re at work, doing your job and a male coworker tries to slut-shame you in front of the entire office, taunting you about how many men he thinks you’ve slept with. In most workplaces, this would be a sackable offense. But in the Australian Parliament, it’s just another day in the office for Sarah Hanson Young. Or at least it was until one day in mid-2018 when she decided she’d had a gutful of the slimy slurs and back-channel rumors about her sex life and her character. So, she spoke up. And ever since that moment, Sarah has had to defend her reputation as a mother, a politician and a woman to her colleagues and the Australian public. She’s been bullied, slut-shamed and attacked online. And on behalf of herself and every other woman who‘s been slut-shamed at work, she decided she’s not going to take it anymore. Sarah has written a book called En Garde about sexism in Australian politics, and she joins Mia to talk about it... Click here to subscribe to No Filter. Germaine Greer Won't Be Defined By Her Rape

bonusE

This podcast will deal extensively with the subject of rape and won't be appropriate for all listeners. If this podcast does bring anything up for you then please call 1800 RESPECT. When people think of feminism, they think of Germaine Greer. Her manifesto The Female Eunuch was released in 1970 and is still shaping conversations 48 years later. But what happens when an icon - whose job it is to be provocative - exists in a culture of outrage? Most recently, the release of her Melbourne University press book On Rape has led to an onslaught of headlines condemning her brand of feminism and questioning her relevance in 2018. And she joins Mamamia Out Loud co-host Jessie Stephens to talk about it in this very special episode... Kyl Myers Is Letting Her Child Choose Their Gender

"Aw, are you having a boy or a girl?" It's what every parent-to-be is asked as soon as the lines appear on the pee stick. But Kyl Myers and her partner Brent are two of a growing number of parents who refused to answer that question and made the choice to raise their child as "gender creative". Kyl and Brent have never publicly disclosed the biological sex of their child Zoomer, and they don’t use the pronouns 'he' or 'she'. They intend to let Zoomer decide on what gender to identify as, if any, as they grow. So what’s it like raising a gender creative child? Why choose to do it? And what happens next? Click here to subscribe to No Filter. CREDITS: Host: Mia Freedman  With thanks to special guest Kyl Myers. Follow the Raising Zoomer Instagram account here.
