Brisbane based singer/songwriter Amy Sheppard spent years altering the way she looked in her Instagram photos. Like most women who upload images to their feeds, she wanted to look polished, smooth, perfect.  And then she realised that she was making the women, both young and old who follow her, feel bad about their bodies.  So she decided to stop. She stopped editing out her cellulite. Stopped smoothing her legs. She stopped making herself look airbrushed.  And instead, she started a movement called Kiss My Fat Ass - that promotes normal features such as cellulite, rolls, and scars. You see Amy is a member of Aria award-winning Aussie band Sheppard - alongside two of her siblings. Rachael Casella met her husband Jonny when she was training to be a police officer and he was one of her instructors. Nothing happened until the training was finished, but then, the pair fell in love.  They got married. And as they went on their honeymoon, they started trying for a baby. But, like so many things in life, nothing followed a simple plan.  Rachael did eventually fall pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful little girl called Mackenzie. But Mackenzie had Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and Rachael and Johnny only got to hold her for seven months. When American author Candace Bushnell released her first book Sex And The City, she had no idea the impact it was about to have on the world.  That book and those stories would go on to form one of the most iconic characters of the 21st century, Carrie Bradshaw. On the 20th of June this year, con-man Hamish McLaren was sentenced to 16 years in prison after stealing more than $7.5 million from his victims, including his ex-wife Bec Rosen. When Pauline Hanson was elected into politics in the mid-90s, author Benjamin Law was in high school on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. He’d grown up in a very white area. But up until that point, he hadn’t really considered his race. Sure, he was Asian Australian, but that had never really been a problem. And then, Pauline Hanson made her maiden speech in Parliament and all of a sudden, Ben’s ethnicity was associated with something negative. His family was seen as different....He was Asian Australian, his parents were divorced and he was gay. Ben Law has gone on to become one of Australia’s most respected journalists. When Georgie Dent was asked when her nervous breakdown began, she had to think. Really think. Was it at 19 when she found herself diagnosed with a disease she’d never heard of? On the 16th of May 2019, Bob Hawke passed away peacefully in his home with his wife Blanche d'Alpuget. Today on No Filter we're revisiting Mia's chat with Blanche.Blanche d’Alpuget has spent 62 of her 74 years exploring lust, longing and a lifelong quest for love. It was 1970 in Jakarta when a then married Blanche met a then married Robert Hawke. She thought his name was Robin. Little did she knew he would go on to become the great love of her life. Six years later, in 1976, she met Robert again. Their affair began and continued on and off until 1995 when they married. In person, Blanche is extraordinarily beautiful down-to-earth, quick to laugh, searingly honest and still madly in love with the man who has - along with her career and her son - been the big love of her life. As a kid, she dreamed that she’d grow up, meet the love of her life, get married, have kids and grow old …..with that same person. But, like one in three marriages, Chloe’s life didn’t work out that way because her relationship fell apart. When Chloe Shorten separated from her husband of 10 years, she was concerned that it might affect her two young children. Then, when she remarried Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and blended her family, she got even more concerned. So, she went hunting for help. If you’ve ever been in a romantic relationship of any kind and you’ve been together a while, you will have probably encountered your partner’s mother. The image we have of a mother-in-law is pretty grim, generally. They don’t get great press. But for many women, their relationship with their mother-in-law is one of the most fraught in their lives and there are good reasons for this! They are intimately connected to your partner and so are you, obviously, but to one another, you’re pretty much strangers. Sally Hepworth noticed this when she started collecting stories for her latest novel, aptly called The Mother-In-Law. Women would tell her stories about their partners mothers bringing over a raw chicken after they’d just had a baby, or of mothers-in-law who have keys to their child's house and use them regularly. And so, her fifth novel was born. Sally is one of Liane Moriarty’s favourite Australian authors - she’s written five books, she has 3 children and she’s spent a long time talking to people who had issues with their mothers-in-law. When Josh and Sean Szeps met they knew instantly they'd found "the one." How did they know? Because Josh insulted Sean. The pair met in 2011 in a dive bar in New York, moved in together in 2012, were engaged by 2013 and married in 2014. While many gay couples feel that having a relationship and a family is difficult, for Sean and Josh they felt they were always in the right place at the right time. Gay marriage became legal in the US just as they were considering getting married, the price of IVF started to come down just as they were wondering whether they should start a family. And when they decided that surrogacy was the way they wanted to go, the approval process was fast. In 2017 their twins, Stella and Cooper were born in America. The product of Josh's sperm and an egg donated by a female member of Sean's family. They've now moved to Australia and are raising their twins here. They join Mia to share their story... For the past 20 years, Mia's guest has been the voice for over a thousand victims and survivors of child sexual abuse. Right now, Lisa Flynn is representing the father of one of the choir boys who was sexually abused by George Pell at the age of 13. This boy’s young life was never the same and “R,” as he’s been known throughout the trial, withdrew from his family and began taking drugs very soon after the abuse happened. Now Pell is serving a prison term of 3 years and 8 months for the abuse of those two boys and on the day he was sentenced, Lisa sat beside R’s father in the courtroom. Six months after her husband died unexpectedly, Simi Polonsky gave birth to her third child.  She was grieving the death of her husband, Shua, and celebrating the birth of her new son. And not in a million years did she think that her life would end up looking like that. Simi was born into a big Jewish family in Sydney, her father was an Orthodox Rabbi and she was one of seven kids. In her early 20s, Simi moved to New York with her sister. She married the love of her life, launched a successful business with her sister Chaya called TheFrockNYC, and started a family. And then on an ordinary day in 2017, something unexpected and shocking happened.  Her strong, healthy husband got sick and died all in the space of a couple of weeks. A woman’s work is never done. And author Gemma Hartley knows this. Whether she’s at home or in the office, there’s a whole layer of labour done predominantly by women that most men can’t even see. Emotional labour is being the person who notices problems, delegates solutions and makes sure life goes smoothly for everyone around her. It’s noticing there’s barely any milk left and then doing something about it - and changing the toilet paper roll when it’s run out. This work is invisible and exhausting at the same time. And it’s not just something experienced by mothers or women in relationships. A couple of years ago Gemma Hartley wrote an essay about emotional labour after a particularly disastrous Mothers Day. When you meet 98-year-old Holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku, it’s hard not to be happy. He’s full of life, advice and stories about a world few people remember. A world few people can imagine. A world many people want to forget about. But not Eddie. Because that dark world ended up giving him the biggest gift he could have asked for; the gift of life.  On the 10th of November 1938, Eddie Jaku’s world changed forever when a group of Nazi’s knocked on his front door. Eddie was a Jew living in Germany, and for the next 12 years he was in and out of concentration camps, including Auschwitz.  He lost his mother and father and escaped and was caught, countless times. In most workplaces, this would be a sackable offense. But in the Australian Parliament, it’s just another day in the office for Sarah Hanson Young. Or at least it was until one day in mid-2018 when she decided she’d had a gutful of the slimy slurs and back-channel rumors about her sex life and her character. So, she spoke up. And ever since that moment, Sarah has had to defend her reputation as a mother, a politician and a woman to her colleagues and the Australian public. She’s been bullied, slut-shamed and attacked online. And on behalf of herself and every other woman who‘s been slut-shamed at work, she decided she’s not going to take it anymore.
