Dotty Charles On Outrage: Why Everyone Is Shouting And No One Is Talking
It all started with a holiday to Thailand and a hoodie with a picture of a monkey on it. That’s how Dotty Charles knew that the world had reached peak outrage. Dotty, also known as Ashley, Amplify Dot or A.Dot, is an English rapper, former BBC presenter and broadcaster. She's just started a new job as Lead Cultural Curator of Black Music for Apple and she's written a book called Outraged: Why Everyone Is Shouting But No One Is Talking. Dotty’s message is clear: there are many valid things that we should be outraged about but if we’re outraged about everything all the time, outrage itself becomes almost meaningless. And nothing changes. So how do we break this outrage cycle of addiction so many people seem to be stuck in? And how do you talk about outrage culture without being destroyed yourself? You can buy Dotty's book here. Listen to our newest podcast Me After You here. GET IN TOUCH: Feedback? We’re listening! At 26, Michael’s dream in life is to become a husband, and he’s so determined to reach this goal he has a pair of love ducks that sit on his bedside table at his home in Wollongong where he lives with his family. At 30, Sophie Cachia Turned Her 'Perfect' Life Upside Down
To her many Instagram followers, it seemed like the 'Young Mummy' Sophie Cachia had a pretty rosy life. She had a successful influencer career and pyjama business that she had built off her Young Mummy blog, which she'd started after marrying an AFL player called Jarryd Cachia and having the first of their two kids at just 22 years old. But like most things on social media, there was a different story happening behind the scenes. Sophie was starting to question the life and identity she'd built for herself over the years. All of it. So, she opened up her marriage. She started dating women. And everything changed. Recently, Sophie was listening to Mia's interview with Glennon Doyle and nodding along furiously. It was a voice memo that made this interview happen. Rebekah Robertson: The Trailblazing Mother Of A Trans Child
Rebekah Robertson had twins. Both assigned male at birth. Despite what was written on their birth certificates, Rebekah’s twins were very different to one another. And so began the story of a little person called Georgie who knew deep inside that she was a girl. In this conversation Rebekah explains when she first realised Georgie was transgender and how she handled everything from school to clothes to friends and doctors. She also talks about why the way she has parented her trans child is the exception and how that breaks her heart. Rebekah is an actress, activist and author. She is the founder of Transcend, a charity for families of transgender children and she’s written a book called About A Girl about how she raised Georgie and how she navigated a safe path for her through a world that still struggles to understand what trans kids need to survive and thrive. Teresa Palmer's Very Un-Hollywood Life
When Teresa Palmer was nineteen, she walked into Hollywood's biggest talent agency and told them she was happy to have a career, but her biggest plans involved being a mother. And, she hasn't gone back on that. Even though she's scaled the heights of life as a Hollywood movie star, appearing in movies with people like Adam Sandler and Rosario Dawson, it's her family that are the focus of her life. She's in a happy blended family who spend their lives between her hometown Adelaide and Los Angeles. There's the three children she gave birth to - Forest, Bodhi and Poet, and there's Mark's first son Isaac, the stepson that made Teresa sure she wanted to be a mother. Now Teresa's adding 'author' to the many strings on her already packed bow, after writing 'Zen Mama' with her close friend Sarah Wright Olsen, which talks about everything from birth to pregnancy loss and the raising of small children. Bikram: Yogi. Guru. Predator.
This interview was recorded in January 2020. This is a story about fame and power and money and celebrity. And…..yoga. And the point at which all of those things meet is at the bare feet of a man named Bikram Choudhury. Wearing signature tiny black Speedos and his long hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, Bikram Choudhury was the king of an empire built on sweat, obsessive devotion and, as we learn in a recent Netflix documentary called Bikram, sexual harassment, rape and maniacal control. This documentary was made by Academy-Award winning Australian filmmaker Eva Orner, who talks to Mia about the story of Bikram, what he is doing now, and why he hasn't yet been punished for his many crimes. Narelda Jacobs is a proud Whadjuk Noongar woman and there’s so much to her story: a strictly religious upbringing, four older sisters, teen pregnancy, a shotgun marriage, a divorce…..there are many plot twists in her life and she recounts them with such warmth, wisdom and humour. Over the next twenty five years, she built a career as a respected journalist in Western Australia, and last year answered the call from Studio Ten, moving her life and love to Sydney and a national platform where she's found herself increasingly becoming a spokesperson for Aboriginal people. It Was Invisible...
If you’ve never experienced an unhealthy relationship, one where passion and power and control insidiously morphs into abuse…..this episode might confuse you. But even if you’re one of the women who has never been through that kind of relationship, is not going through it now…..I bet you know someone who has. Or is. Abusive relationships come in 50 shades. The one most commonly understood is physical abuse. It’s a very clear line when you’re physically harmed by someone who claims to love you. The thing is: abuse in the home isn't just physical. We're learning now about emotional and financial abuse and how crippling it can be for people. It's something Mia experienced in her twenties and is passionate about helping other women recognise. The guest in this episode is Moo Baulch - yep, that’s her name, it’s a nickname that’s stuck - and she’s worked in the not-for-profit and Domestic Violence space for years before taking on her current role as head of customer vulnerability at the Commonwealth Bank, leading a team who deal with customers impacted by all forms of financial abuse, something that can affect partners, parents, adult children and siblings. It’s an issue we share Moo’s passion for here about at Mamamia because we’re a purpose-driven company and our core purpose is to make the world a better place for women and girls. Financial abuse can be one of the many ways partners and family members control, and it's something Mamamia has partnered with CBA to help women out of it. Moo describes in this special No Filter how to identify it, and importantly, how to find help. Check out #ItWasInvisible here. Glennon Doyle's Life Was Totally Upended In A Single Evening
It was 2016 and Glennon Doyle was a wife, a mother and the author of a book called Love Warrior, that was about to be released. The book was a memoir about repairing her marriage after discovering her husband's longterm infidelity and Oprah had chosen it for her bookclub. This was big-time. And Glennon was about to begin a national promotional tour across America. What happened on the first night of that book tour was definitely not part of the plan. But it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to her. And the best decision she ever made. For herself. And for everyone who loved her. Her new book, Untamed, tells the story of how Glennon's life unfolded so unexpectedly after that night and how she had - until then - tamed herself in so many ways, just like most women have. Glennon is a truth-teller for a new generation of feminists and her story will resonate with every woman.Glennon is a wildly popular guest on NO FILTER and you can hear those earlier interviews here and here. Bringing Women Back To Life: The Dr Catherine Hamlin Story
Imagine being ousted from your community, from your family, your whole life, because of a condition you'd developed during childbirth. A condition that most Australian women can have fixed relatively quickly and easily. Dr Catherine Hamlin wasn't having any of that. She and her husband created the legendary Hamlin Fistula Hospital and began saving women's lives back in the 1960s. Over her sixty years in Africa, Catherine became a national treasure of Ethiopia and Australia and we didn't want her recent death to pass without remembering her remarkable life. Her niece, Dr Alison Morgan, was so inspired by her Aunty Cath, she had a career in women's health medicine herself, and she's with us to tell us the story of Catherine's incredible legacy. A Happy Update From The Happiest Man Alive, Eddie Jaku
We wanted to update and revisit an interview I did with Holocaust survivor, Eddie Jaku, who describes himself as The Happiest Man Alive. Today his 100th birthday (I called up his granddaughter Danielle to find out how he's planning to celebrate) but as well as that, people are looking for wisdom and perspective and joy right now. How Are You Doing? A Check In With Amelia Lester
Today I’m calling up one of my best friends, Amelia Lester who some of you may know if you listened to the podcast we used to host together about Trump’s America called Tell Me It’s Going To Be Ok. Amelia and I met when she was the editor of the Good Weekend magazine and living in Sydney - it’s her hometown but she’s lived most of her adult life in America ever since she moved there to go to Harvard on a scholarship in 2001. She came home to Australia a few years ago for that big job but left again soon after to marry her partner who is a military doctor based in the US which is where she lives now. So what's it like living in the country that is now the #1 Corona country in the world? And what's it like being married to a doctor who is treating covid patients? We had a lot of laughs in this conversation. Enjoy. Sara-Marie Fedele: The Original Reality Star
It's been nearly twenty years since Sara-Marie Fedele bum danced her way into the heart of any Australian who had a TV, during the first season of Big Brother. Shortly after that, being one of the millions of Australians who fell in love with her, Mia put her on the cover of Cosmopolitan and nearly lost her job for it. Sara-Marie paved the way, unintentionally, in so many ways: in the body positivity movement, in reality television and negotiating a life after her three months of enormous fame. She's walked an unexpectedly fine line between public and private life over the last two decades - and Mia thought it was time to catch up. There's just no way you'll be listening to this conversation without smiling from ear to ear, pretty much the whole time. It's time to fall in love with Sara-Marie again. Megan Gale Has Found Her Voice
Megan Gale was a superstar in Italy before Australians knew who she was. She'd been ready to give up modelling when she landed a life-changing gig in Italy in the nineties. Her sudden fame overseas meant Australia finally learned her name and she spent a few years juggling careers in different countries. She was the face of David Jones for nearly two decades. When the time came to start thinking about life outside modelling, she had a crack at acting and found herself cast as Wonderwoman years before the 2017 film made Gal Gadot a star. Megan's now a Lady Startup and a mother of two, married to AFL/Survivor star Shaun Hampson. In this episode of No Filter, Megan talks Mia through her life as a model, becoming a Lady Startup and having a miscarriage... all in the public eye. Gabbie Stroud Has A Few Things She Wants School Parents To Know
Here are some things worth knowing about school life: Teachers aren't on call for parents 24/7... and under no circumstances should a parent ever follow a teacher home from school to talk about their child. When You Realise Your Parents Aren't Bulletproof
There is a stage in everyone’s life where you realise your parents are not bulletproof. For some of us that comes when our mum or dad starts forgetting things or when they go through a period of unexpected turmoil. When journalist, author and screenwriter Amal Awad’s father was diagnosed with kidney failure, she made a surprising decision that changed so much for them and for her. Ellie Cole Defied Expectations

The list included things like rollerblading and riding a bike but Ellie had other plans. Ellie doesn't remember much about losing her leg and she grew up with a family who treated her like everyone else, so she set about ticking off every single item on that doctor's list. Meghan, Diana & What Happens When Strong Women Stand Up To The Royals
When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they were leaving the royal family the commentary went one of two ways: how very dare they and good on them. But so much of the vitriol was aimed at Meghan and if we look back at history, it tells a chilling tale of what happens to women when they don't fit the perceived idea of what a “princess” should be. In this episode, Mia is joined by journalist, author and broadcaster Dr Julia Baird, who along with having a PHD in history and a book on how female politicians are perceived in the media, has trawled the royal archives to write the biography of Queen Victoria. In this interview, he talks to Mia about being battered by America, the feeling of knowing your most successful work could be behind you and how in his line of work he has made a choice to be monogamous and put family first.
