What's the difference between a party girl and an alcoholic? For today's guest, it was about 20 years, a series of traumas, and a large dose of denial. Shanna Whan finally realised she was in serious trouble when she 'came to' in the Emergency Department after being found crumpled and bleeding at the bottom of a flight of stairs.  You see for a long time, like many ''high-functioning'' alcoholics, Shan convinced herself it wasn't a serious problem because she was a successful business woman by day, and didn't drink until ''after five'' ....  Growing up in rural Australia, heavy drinking was a culturally ingrained and glorified rite of passage she embraced wholeheartedly .. to try and fit in. But it wasn’t until her rock bottom in early 2015 that she knew she had to reach out and ask for help and take action, or die young. Fast forward six years, 15,000 volunteer hours, starting over from scratch, endless failures, knockbacks, and opposition - and now Shanna is the founder and CEO of a national charity called Sober In The Country.  This is her story... 2020 has been a terrible year for so many people, but Constance Hall? It’s been tougher than most. The business owner, mum of seven, and social media star has spent the better half of this year in a hospital caring for her husband Denim Cooke.  Denim was involved in a very bad motorcycle accident in August. And for a while there, it looked like Constance had lost her soulmate... Pauline Nguyen has lived a very big life.  When she was 3 years old her family left Vietnam by boat. But sadly, all these magazines and the brands behind them are now gone. Deborah Thomas and Paula Joye have, between them, worked at, launched or edited pretty much every major magazine in Australia. Loneliness. In Australia, it impacts one in four people. And it’s not often talked about.  But that’s something that today’s guest is trying to change.  Dr. Vivek Murthy served as the 19th Surgeon General of the United States from 2014-2017. Essentially, he was America’s doctor. In 2003, a two-year-old girl captured the hearts of Australians when she was involved in an accident at her NSW childcare centre. Her name was Sophie Delezio. A vehicle crashed into the centre and caught alight, trapping Sophie and burning 85% of her body. After that accident, she lost both her legs below the knee, her right hand and ear. Three years later, in May 2006, Sophie was hit by a car as her nanny pushed her wheelchair across the road. The car threw her 18 metres from her wheelchair and resulted in a broken jaw, broken ribs, fractured collarbone and a punctured lung as well as bleeding on her brain and a heart attack.  But after all of that, she lived. Today is Father's Day. And whether it's a happy, sad or complicated day for you, here at No Filter we wanted to share a special episode that serves as a reminder of how powerful the bond between fathers and their children can be. You might remember William McInnes from Seachange, or Blue Heelers, but what you may not know about him is that he can really tell a story. He’s been doing it for the past 30 years, first as an actor and later as a writer. William has written over 11 books. A lot of them, around the themes of growing up in Australia.  And his latest, Fatherhood, is a personal tribute to Aussie dads everywhere. William lost the love of his life, his wife Sarah in 2011. He raised their two children, Clem, and Stella by himself. It all started with a holiday to Thailand and a hoodie with a picture of a monkey on it.  That’s how Dotty Charles knew that the world had reached peak outrage. Dotty, also known as Ashley, Amplify Dot or A.Dot, is an English rapper, former BBC presenter and broadcaster. She's just started a new job as Lead Cultural Curator of Black Music for Apple and she's written a book called Outraged: Why Everyone Is Shouting But No One Is Talking.  Dotty’s message is clear: there are many valid things that we should be outraged about but if we’re outraged about everything all the time, outrage itself becomes almost meaningless. And nothing changes. So how do we break this outrage cycle of addiction so many people seem to be stuck in? To her many Instagram followers, it seemed like the 'Young Mummy' Sophie Cachia had a pretty rosy life. Rebekah Robertson had twins. Both assigned male at birth. Despite what was written on their birth certificates, Rebekah’s twins were very different to one another. And so began the story of a little person called Georgie who knew deep inside that she was a girl.  In this conversation Rebekah explains when she first realised Georgie was transgender and how she handled everything from school to clothes to friends and doctors. She also talks about why the way she has parented her trans child is the exception and how that breaks her heart. Rebekah is an actress, activist and author. She is the founder of Transcend, a charity for families of transgender children and she’s written a book called About A Girl about how she raised Georgie and how she navigated a safe path for her through a world that still struggles to understand what trans kids need to survive and thrive. Narelda Jacobs grew up in a big, rambunctious family. Her mother, an Irish trailblazer, came out to Australia and married Narelda's dad, a member of the Stolen Generation who went on to become a religious minister. Narelda Jacobs is a proud Whadjuk Noongar woman and there’s so much to her story: a strictly religious upbringing, four older sisters, teen pregnancy, a shotgun marriage, a divorce…..there are many plot twists in her life and she recounts them with such warmth, wisdom and humour. If you’ve never experienced an unhealthy relationship, one where passion and power and control insidiously morphs into abuse…..this episode might confuse you. But even if you’re one of the women who has never been through that kind of relationship, is not going through it now…..I bet you know someone who has. Or is. Abusive relationships come in 50 shades. The one most commonly understood is physical abuse. It’s a very clear line when you’re physically harmed by someone who claims to love you. The thing is: abuse in the home isn't just physical. We're learning now about emotional and financial abuse and how crippling it can be for people.  It's something Mia experienced in her twenties and is passionate about helping other women recognise. We've wanted to bring you this story for a while now - because it's a story that's played out in our extended Mamamia family.  Anne Stephens (mother of Mamamia's Clare Stephens and Jessie Stephens) was twenty-two and finishing her teaching degree when she discovered she was pregnant.  It was 1982 and things were different then. She couldn't see where she could give the baby the life she wanted for him.  37 years later, he found her. After a mission and a half. Here's Andrew's story. Imagine being ousted from your community, from your family, your whole life, because of a condition you'd developed during childbirth. A condition that most Australian women can have fixed relatively quickly and easily.  Dr Catherine Hamlin wasn't having any of that. She and her husband created the legendary Hamlin Fistula Hospital and began saving women's lives back in the 1960s.  Over her sixty years in Africa, Catherine became a national treasure of Ethiopia and Australia and we didn't want her recent death to pass without remembering her remarkable life. We wanted to update and revisit an interview I did with Holocaust survivor, Eddie Jaku, who describes himself as The Happiest Man Alive. Today his 100th birthday (I called up his granddaughter Danielle to find out how he's planning to celebrate) but as well as that, people are looking for wisdom and perspective and joy right now. Eddie is full of life, advice and stories about a world few people remember. A world that few people survived. A world that many people want to forget about. But not Eddie. Because that dark world ended up providing him with the biggest gift he could have wished for, life. Happy Birthday Eddie. The world is better and brighter for having you in it. The first time Simi Polonsky Hoffman was on No Filter, she was deep in grief.  Her husband, Shua, had died of a sudden illness, leaving her with two children and another on the way.
