Elise Loehnen Walked Away From Fame & Money For A Smaller (Better) Life

Listen to part two of Mia's interview with Elise, here. You’d probably recognise Elise Loehnen’s face because, in her role as Chief Content Officer at Goop, she hosted the Goop Lab TV show on Netflix and the Goop podcast alongside the company's founder, Gwyneth Paltrow. But that fact is probably the least interesting thing about Elise Loehnen. In 2021, Elise walked away from her extremely high-profile job to launch a podcast and write her book. And her book On Our Best Behaviour, has blown our minds. As women, we congratulate ourselves when we resist the donut in the office kitchen. We celebrate our restraint when we hold back from sending an email in anger. We put others' needs ahead of our own and believe this makes us exemplary. But Elise is asking…does it? Why Megan Phelps-Roper Sat Down With J. K. Rowling

If the name Megan Phelps-Roper doesn’t immediately ring a bell for you, her former church and home might - the incredibly controversial and almost universally despised Westboro Baptist Church. Megan was raised in the church and from just 5 years of age, was on the picket line day and night hoping to save those her family believe needed to be saved. 10 years ago, Megan left the church. And she’s since made a living by using her own example of how her belief system could be challenged to show the power of changing people’s minds through conversations in good faith. Which, is what led her to this year, make a podcast called The Witch Trials Of J. K. Rowling. Megan sat down with Rowling and discussed why she believes the things she does. It’s been met with a fair amount of controversy, but it’s not about choosing a ‘side’ for Megan. It’s about listening, learning, and conversation THE END BITS: With thanks to Megan Phelps-Roper. Nikki Gemmell Doesn't Want To Have Sex Anymore

Listen to the rest of Mia's conversation with Nikki here... A few weeks ago, an article in The Australian entitled ‘Sex? I’m Over It’ infiltrated the group chats of Gen X women all across the country. In it, author Nikki Gemmell put into words a feeling that so many other women have felt at some point in their lives: I’m tired, I don’t want to have sex, and I just want my own bed. 20 years and 4 kids on from her groundbreaking erotic novel The Bride Stripped Bare, Nikki has some different thoughts about sex. The One Thing We’ve Never Spoken About

Elfy Scott was thirteen when she came across some medication with her mum’s name on it. After Googling the name of it and seeing the words schizophrenia and psychosis, the ‘voices’ her mum often complained about hearing started to make sense. Schizophrenia is not uncommon, but often completely misunderstood by the general public. Elfy is a journalist who has written a book about this topic, The One Thing We’ve Never Spoken About, and joins Mia on No Filter to discuss her own experiences with her mum’s schizophrenia, and whether the stigma around complex mental health issues can hold people back, even more so than the disorder itself. Best Of 2022: Julia Haart’s Unorthodox Life: Part One

Find part two of Mia's conversation with Julia here. Over the next three weeks we’ll be dropping the top three No Filter episodes of the year into your feed, alongside our usual brand new episodes. We’ve loved making them for you and hoping you’ve enjoyed listening. Thank you for your support this year, especially if you’re a Mamamia subscriber, and we can’t wait to tell more stories in 2023. Subscribe to Mamamia Until she was 40, every aspect of Julia Haart’s life, was tightly, tightly controlled. What she ate, what she thought, what she wore, and what she was allowed to do in a day. Julia was part of an ultra-Orthodox community in New York – a type of extreme form of religion called Haredi Judaism. But, after having 4 kids, Julia decided to escape. Before we jump in, just a quick note - and some context. It’s important to bear in mind that these are Julia’s personal experiences. They do not speak for the many and varied experiences of all Jewish women - Orthodox, Ultra-Orthodox, or otherwise. And on those terms - ‘Orthodox’ and ‘Ultra-Orthodox’ - while we use them interchangeably, it’s important to note that actually, Julia’s experience is within an Ultra-Orthodox community of Monsey, New York. This is just one niche sect in a spectrum of many, each with varying customs. This is part one of her story… THE END BITS: Subscribe to Mamamia With thanks to Julia Haart.
