With none out and a runner at first base, Brennan hit a smash that connected with a small bird who had wandered into a dangerous place. The ball sent the bird, well, flying and when Brennan got to first he reacted by putting his hands on his helmet and grimacing. Following the game, Brennan posted an apology on Twitter. It’s the second time in a week that a major league player has unintentionally killed a bird. MLB – A’s broadcaster Glen Kuiper let go after racial slur on air Oakland Athletics broadcaster Glen Kuiper was let go by NBC Sports California after using a racial slur during a telecast while describing a trip to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. Kuiper was suspended by the network earlier this month following his slur that aired during a pregame segment of an A’s game against the Kansas City Royals on May 5. Kuiper talked about a trip to the museum with colleague Dallas Braden but seemingly mispronounced the word “Negro,” making it sound instead like a slur. NBC Sports California says after an internal review that the network decided to “end its relationship” with Kuiper. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 4, Pittsburg Pirates 0 Chicago White Sox 8, Cleveland Guardians 3 Houston Astros 7, Chicago Cubs 3 Tigers 4, Pirates 0 – Michael Lorenzen has season-high 7 strikeouts, Tigers beat Pirates 4-0 Michael Lorenzen had a season-high seven strikeouts in six innings, Spencer Torkelson doubled twice and the Detroit Tigers beat the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0 on Tuesday night. Lorenzen (2-2) gave up five hits and two walks and has allowed just two runs in his last three starts. Will Vest worked two scoreless innings, with three strikeouts, and Jose Cisnero pitched the ninth. Torkelson scored and knocked in another run. Riley Greene had three hits. Shut out for the second time in three games, Pittsburgh has lost 12 of 14 games while scoring just 22 runs. Luis Ortiz (0-2) allowed four runs, three earned, and seven hits in three-plus innings. A quarter of the way through Major League Baseball’s first season with the pitch timer, relief pitchers seem to be bearing the most stress from it, with save conversions dropping to 61.4% from 67.8% at a similar point last season. The save percentage is near the bottom range of the past decade, which averaged 65.1%, MLB said Monday. The high was 70% in 2015 and the low 61% in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
