Marcus Semien extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a double in the third. With the score 1-1, Nick Maton and Tyler Nevin started the sixth with singles off Dane Dunning. Angels 12, White Sox 5 – Ohtani homers twice, including career longest at 459 feet, Angels beat White Sox 12-5 Shohei Ohtani homered in consecutive innings, including a 459-foot drive that was the longest of his Major League Baseball career, and drove in four runs to lead the Los Angeles Angels over the Chicago White Sox 12-5. The move came one day after the Tigers placed their best pitcher, Eduardo Rodriguez. on the 15-day injured list with a ruptured ligament in his left index finger. MLB – Cubs’ Steele leaves start against Rays because of left forearm tightness Chicago Cubs starter Justin Steele exited Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays after three innings because of left forearm tightness. Steele retired all nine batters he face. He got a visit from manager David Ross and a trainer with one out in the third. Steele retired the next two batters, with third baseman Patrick Wisdom making a lunging stab on Taylor Walls’ line drive foul and stopping Jose Siri’s hard grounder before throwing him out. Hayden Wesneski came in to start the fourth inning. Steele is 6-2 with a 2.65 ERA in 12 starts. Eovaldi allowed four hits and a season-high three walks in five innings with four strikeouts. He is 6-0 with a 1.38 ERA in his last eight starts. Brock Burke, Jonathan Hernández and José Leclerc finished a five-hitter, the Rangers’ fifth shutout this year. Matthew Boyd gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in six-plus innings. Detroit had been trying to reach .500 for the first time since a 4-4 start in 2022. Eovaldi allowed four hits and a season-high three walks in five innings with four strikeouts. He is 6-0 with a 1.38 ERA in his last eight starts. Brock Burke, Jonathan Hernández and José Leclerc finished a five-hitter, the Rangers’ fifth shutout this year. Matthew Boyd gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in six-plus innings. Detroit had been trying to reach .500 for the first time since a 4-4 start in 2022. Angels 6, White Sox 4 – Drury, Angels spoil Hendriks’ return with 6-4 victory over White Sox Brandon Drury and Matt Thaiss homered during a fast start for the Los Angeles Angels, who spoiled Liam Hendriks’ return for the Chicago White Sox with a 6-4 victory. Drury hit a three-run shot and Thaiss followed with another drive during a four-run first inning against a shaky Michael Kopech. Hendriks pitched the eighth in his first big league appearance since he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The crowd of 23,599 roared when he walked out to the bullpen after the fourth, and then saluted the All-Star closer with a standing ovation when he entered the game. Joe Lombardo announced Wednesday a preliminary agreement between his office, state legislative leaders and the Oakland Athletics for a stadium funding plan. It comes after weeks of negotiations over how much public assistance the state will contribute to a $1.5 billion ballpark in Las Vegas. The preliminary agreement indicates a funding bill could come to the Nevada Legislature in the coming days. It still needs approval from both the Senate and Assembly, with less than two weeks until the session ends. The A’s have been looking for years for a home to replace Oakland Coliseum, where the team has played since arriving from Kansas City for the 1968 season. Tkachuk’s goal was his second of the night — and maybe the biggest in Panthers’ history. The Panthers will play either Vegas or Dallas for the Stanley Cup starting sometime next week; Vegas currently leads the Western Conference title series 3-0. Ryan Lomberg and Anthony Duclair had the other goals for Florida, which swept a series for the first time in franchise history. Now down 3-1, the question is whether Boston can carry that energy home, a place where it is just 4-5 this postseason to keep alive its hopes of extending the series. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 6, Kansas City Royals 4 Chicago White Sox 6, Cleveland Guardians 0 Chicago Cubs 4, New York Mets 2 Tigers 6, Royals 4 – Short hits pinch-hit, three-run homer, Tigers beat Royals 6-4 Pinch-hitter Zack Short hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Riley Greene also homered, doubled and scored twice for the Tigers in the game that was delayed 29 minutes by rain. Will Vest (1-0) retired all four hitters he faced, striking out two. Alex Lange picked up his ninth save in 10 tries. Greene led off the inning with a double and went to third on an infield single by Matt Vierling. Short drove them both home with the first pinch-hit home run of his career, a 416-foot shot to left field off Josh Taylor White Sox 6, Guardians 0 – Kopech strikes out nine, White Sox roll to 6-0 win over Guardians Michael Kopech struck out nine and allowed two hits over seven dominant innings, Romy González had a two-run double and the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-0. Kopech, who retired the first 16 batters in his last start against Kansas City, did not allow a baserunner until Josh Naylor singled leading off the fifth. The right-hander walked one and extended his shutout streak to 15 innings in his last two outings. The Guardians only pushed one player into scoring position and were blanked for the sixth time. Andrés Giménez had the other hit off Kopech, who held the Royals and Cleveland to a combined three singles while striking out 19 in back-to-back wins. Cubs 4, Mets 2 – Marcus Stroman pitches 8 sparkling innings, Cubs beat Mets 4-2 Marcus Stroman pitched eight efficient innings to help the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 4-2 on Wednesday night. Nico Hoerner homered in Chicago’s second straight victory since coming home after a 2-7 trip. Seiya Suzuki also drove in a run with a double off Japanese countryman Kodai Senga. Stroman (4-4) threw just 88 pitches in his longest outing of the season, 59 for strikes. The right-hander allowed four hits, struck out three and walked two. Stroman helped himself by starting a 1-6-3 double play in the sixth, and then pounded his chest in celebration. Mark Leiter Jr. worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. Joe Lombardo announced Wednesday a preliminary agreement between his office, state legislative leaders and the Oakland Athletics for a stadium funding plan. It comes after weeks of negotiations over how much public assistance the state will contribute to a $1.5 billion ballpark in Las Vegas. The preliminary agreement indicates a funding bill could come to the Nevada Legislature in the coming days. It still needs approval from both the Senate and Assembly, with less than two weeks until the session ends. The A’s have been looking for years for a home to replace Oakland Coliseum, where the team has played since arriving from Kansas City for the 1968 season. Jose Cuas (3-0) was the winner, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4) took the loss. He allowed four runs — two earned — on eight hits in five innings. He struck out nine and walked two. White Sox 4, Guardians 2 – González, Grandal, and Cease lead White Sox rally to top Guardians 4-2 Romy González’s two-run double broke a seventh-inning tie and sent the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians.
