S2 Ep 30Pep Talk for College Students and Young Adults: When “Failure” and Disappointment Lead to Growth

Hello this is Beth Capecchi and this is going to be my first peptalk (of many, I hope). This one is geared for young adults and college students, even though it could apply to anyone at any age. Almost EVERYONE feels like a failure at times, and gets disappointed in themselves and their jobs/career path in early adulthood. It can be very hard and discouraging to figure out what you will enjoy and be good at, but trust me, you ARE GIFTED. Traditional education doesn’t always uncover our gifts. Please don’t lose hope if you dislike your first job, if you don’t do as well as you expected to do in college, or if your employers seem to be disappointed in you. You will figure it out and one thing you can guarantee in life is that it will be an adventure. Almost every older adult that you know how to some sort of disappointment in themselves or in their career path along the way. Many people don’t end up doing what they set out to do. Life has a way of bringing you over bumps and through valleys before you end up where you need to be if you don’t give up and lose hope. Fear and anxiety are natural, but they fade as your perspective gets healthier. This episode was inspired and recorded immediately following Beth’s session with a 19-year-old who had an absolutely terrible first year of college, academically and emotionally. She was so disappointed in herself that she isolated herself rather than talking about it, and ended up severely depressed and had to withdraw from school second semester freshman year. But when she started opening up to her parents and in therapy, she started thinking differently and having a lot of hope. She has confidence in herself and she is starting her second year of college full of optimism about her future, and she knows that it will be good even if it’s not her “Plan A. “ She deserves an honorary degree in wisdom and perspective and this should be the proudest moment of her parents (and every parent) whose child has learned to think this way about life. Success is not about grades or income, it’s in the way you think and approach life. Don’t give up til you get to a healthy mindset. S2 Ep 29Healing After Suicide

So many people are losing loved ones to suicide these days. The rates of suicide are staggering and still on the rise. In this episode, Beth shares some thoughts which might be helpful for those who find themselves grieving loved ones who took their own lives. Key points: 1) Most people who contemplate suicide or complete suicide are depressed, in agonizing pain, and hopeless. 2) Those who want to take their lives rarely warn people because they do not want to be stopped. 3) They are tired of life being so painful and they believe that there has to be less pain in death 4) Those who are left behind almost always feel guilty, but it is not your fault. You would have stopped them if you could, but you weren’t given the chance. 5) You can offer help to those who are severely depressed or battling severe addiction, but you can’t force them to continue treatment or monitor them 24/7 6) Parallel: sometimes we have to let people go when they are sick and ready to stop treatment, and telling them it’s OK to go is the greatest gift we can give them. Maybe we can gain peace by applying this principle retroactively to those who have taken their life. 7) Things you can do as you begin to heal: -Don’t internalize your pain, talk about it with loved ones, counselors, or in your journal. -Write your loved one a letter or a series of letters. Tell them what you wish you could have said. -Find a grief support group or a suicide survivors support group. S2 Ep 17Are you more Positive or more Negative?

In this short episode, Beth talks about the importance of not being overly positive (which is sometimes referred to as toxic positivity) or overly negative (like “Debbie Downer”). Toxic positivity can be defined as the belief that people should put a positive spin on all experiences. She advises many of her clients to recognize (and journal about!) what is hard and stressful in their lives while also remembering to acknowledge what is going well and they are thankful for. It’s not healthy to be all or nothing, but have a balanced view of life, and be real, honest and vulnerable with others. S2 Ep 12Do Soulmates Exist? Or do they have to be “trained”? With Kyle Horton

This is part two of a lively discussion between Kyle Horton and Beth on the topic of love and marriage. They focus on the age old question, “Do soulmates exist?” Its possible there’s no pre-existing soulmate out there, but the person you’re with could develop into your soulmate if they make it a priority to know you and understand you and care about your needs (love languages, etc. ) Through that you can build a common culture and influence each other and develop a world of your own, which often involves initial disappointments and recalibration of expectations (I.e., lowering the bar). Maybe a soulmate is someone who loves you enough to study who you are, so that they know and value who you are and what you need. This requires a lot of respect and hard work. Beth and Kyle share stories about their own respective marriages to illustrate their ups and downs. And of course, Beth’s husband Remo pops in to make a few colorful comments near the end. S1 Ep 22Understanding Addiction with Compassion

In this episode, Beth and yoga instructor Lauren Aune take a compassionate look at the subject of addiction and substance use disorders. Lauren shares her own story of addiction and recovery and how she uses her experience to help others. She believes that addiction is a coping mechanism developed in response to pain and trauma and urges addicts and the ones that love them to use a lens of compassion when addressing the root cause, focusing less on what is “wrong” with the person with an addiction and more on what happened to that person. Individuals suffering from addiction almost invariably feel deep amounts of shame which becomes a vicious circle of secrets, self-sabotage, isolation, and additional feelings of shame and loneliness as a result. There are many reasons people develop substance abuse disorders to cope, including loneliness, trauma, depression, social anxiety, relationship problems, and a lack of purpose or meaning in their lives. Addiction may serve as a temporary relief, but over time, addiction just compounds these problems rather than resolving them. There is hope for healing! When addicts learn to develop self-love and work through the pain and suffering of their lives in a healthy manner, their need for unhealthy coping mechanism starts to lessen. Lauren believes this is done in a myriad of ways, but finding community and connection is KEY to healing the shame and isolation that comes from addiction. When we share our stories of vulnerability and they are met with love and empathy, that is THE prescription to for connection and healing!
