Nārāyaṇīyaṃ - Learn to Chant

अवाप्य दक्षं च सुतं कृताध्वरा: प्रचेतसो नारदलब्धया धिया । अवापुरानन्दपदं तथाविध- स्त्वमीश वातालयनाथ पाहि माम् ॥१०॥Avāpya dakṣaṁ ca sutaṁ kṛtādhvarāḥ Pracetaso nāradalabdhayā dhiyā । Avāpurānandapadaṁ tathāvidha- stvamīśa vātālayanātha pāhi mām ॥10॥ அவாப்ய த³க்ஷம் ச ஸுதம் க்ருதா³த்வரா: ப்ரசேதஸோ நாரதலப்தயா திஹியா । அவாபுராநந்தபதம் ததாவித²- ஸ்த்வமீஶ வாதாலயநாத பாஹி மாம் ॥10॥अवाप्य दक्षं च सुतंand getting the son named Dakshaकृत-अध्वरा:(and) having performed Brahma Satraप्रचेतस:the Prachetasनारद-लब्धया धियाwith the knowledge received from Naaradaअवापु:-आनन्द-पदंattained the state of blissतथा-बिध:-त्वम्-Thou who are thusईशO Lord!वातालयनाथLord of Guruvaayur!पाहि माम्protect me.After begetting the son Daksha and performing several sacrificial rites and having received the highest knowledge from Naarada they attained liberation. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are of such merciful nature, grant protection to me.

ततश्च ते भूतलरोधिनस्तरून् क्रुधा दहन्तो द्रुहिणेन वारिता: । द्रुमैश्च दत्तां तनयामवाप्य तां त्वदुक्तकालं सुखिनोऽभिरेमिरे ॥९॥Tataśca te bhūtalarodhinastarūn Krudhā dahanto druhiṇena vāritāḥ । Drumaiśca dattāṁ tanayāmavāpya tāṁ Tvaduktakālaṁ sukhino'bhiremire ॥9॥ததஶ்ச தே பூ⁴தலரோதிநஸ்தரூன் க்ருதா த³ஹந்தோ த்ருஹிணேன வாரிதா: । த்ருமைஶ்ச த³த்தாம் தனயாமவாப்ய தாம் த்வதுக்தகாலம் ஸுகிநோ'பிரேமிரே ॥9॥तत:-च तेthen they (the trees)भू-तल-रोधिन:-तरून्which were covering the whole surface of the earth, the trees,क्रुधा दहन्त:burning (the trees) in angerद्रुहिणेन वारिता:were stopped by Brahmaaद्रुमै:-च दत्तां तनयाम्-the trees gave their daughterअवाप्य तां(they) getting herत्वत्-उक्त-कालंfor the duration mentioned by Theeसुखिन:-अभिरेमिरेthey lived happilyThen the Prachetas who were angered by the dense growth of the trees which were covering the surface of the whole earth and causing obstruction, started to burn them. They were dissuaded by Brahmaa to do so. Obligingly the trees gave them their daughter in marriage and they lived with her happily for the time specified by Thee.

अवाप्य कान्तां तनयां महीरुहां तया रमध्वं दशलक्षवत्सरीम् । सुतोऽस्तु दक्षो ननु तत्क्षणाच्च मां प्रयास्यथेति न्यगदो मुदैव तान् ॥८॥Avāpya kāntāṁ tanayāṁ mahīruhāṁ Tayā ramadhvaṁ daśalakṣavatsarīm । Suto'stu dakṣo nanu tatkṣaṇācca māṁ Prayāsyatheti nyagado mudaiva tān ॥8॥அவாப்ய காந்தாம் தனயாம் மஹீருஹாம் தயா ரமத்வம் தஶலக்ஷவத்ஸரீம் । ஸுதோ'ஸ்து த³க்ஷோ நனு த³த்க்ஷணாச்ச மாம் ப்ரயாஸ்யதேதி ந்யகதோ முடைவ தான் ॥8॥अवाप्य कान्तांgetting as wifeतनयां महीरुहांthe daughter of the treesतया रमध्वंwith her enjoyदशलक्ष-वत्सरीम्for ten lakhs of yearsसुत:-अस्तु दक्ष:may you have a son named Dakshaननु तत्-क्षणात्-immediately thenच मां प्रयास्यथ-इतिattain me also, thusन्यगद:saying soमुदा-एव तान्pleasingly to themBeing highly pleased with the Prachetas Thou blessed them that they would get the daughter of the trees as their wife. They would lead a happy life with her for ten lakh of years. Also that they would have a son named Daksha and soon thereafter they would attain Thee.

प्रचेतसां तावदयाचतामपि त्वमेव कारुण्यभराद्वरानदा: । भवद्विचिन्ताऽपि शिवाय देहिनां भवत्वसौ रुद्रनुतिश्च कामदा ॥७॥Pracetasāṁ tāvadayācatāmapi Tvameva kāruṇyabharādvarānadāḥ । Bhavadvicintā'pi śivāya dehināṁ Bhavatvasau rudranutiśca kāmadā ॥7॥ப்ரசேதஸாம் தாவதயாசதாமபி த்வமேவ காருண்யப⁴ராத்வரான³தா: । ப⁴வத்விசிந்தா'பி ஶிவாய தே³ஹிநாம் ப⁴வத்வஸௌ ருத்ரநுதிஶ்ச காமதா ॥7॥प्रचेतसां तावत्-to the Prachetas, thenअयाचताम्-अपिthough unsought forत्वम्-एव कारुण्य-भरात्-Thou Thyself out of infinite compassionवरान्-अदा:gave boonsभवत्-विचिन्ता-अपिeven the thought of Theeशिवाय देहिनां भवतु-may be for the benefit of the humansअसौ रुद्रनुति:-चthis Rudra hymn alsoकामदा (भवतु)may be a fulfiller of desiresOut of Thy infinite compassion, Thou gave the Prachetas boons,even without their asking. May even Thy thought be for the benefit of the humans and confer welfare on them, and may the Rudra hymn be the fulfiller of all desires.

कृपाबलेनैव पुर: प्रचेतसां प्रकाशमागा: पतगेन्द्रवाहन: । विराजि चक्रादिवरायुधांशुभि- र्भुजाभिरष्टाभिरुदञ्चितद्युति: ॥६॥Kṛpābalenaiva puraḥ pracetasāṁ Prakāśamāgāḥ patagendravāhanaḥ । Virāji cakrādivarāyudhāṁśubhi- rbhujābhiraṣṭābhirudañcitadyutiḥ ॥6॥க்ருபாப³லேநைவ பு⁴ர: ப்ரசேதஸாம் ப்ரகாஶமாகா: பதகேந்த்ரவாஹந: । விராஜி சக்ராதி³வராயுதாம்ஶுபி- ர்புஜாபி⁴ரஷ்டாபி⁴ருடஞ்சிதத்³யுதிஃ ॥6॥कृपा-बलेन-एवby Thy compassion aloneपुर: प्रचेतसांbefore the Prachetasप्रकाशम्-आगा:Thou manifested Thyselfपतगेन्द्र-वाहन:having Garuda as vehicleविराजि चक्र-आदि-वर-आयुध-अंशुभि:-lustrous by the resplendent discus and other divine weaponsभुजाभि:-अष्टाभि:-glorious with eight armsउदञ्चित-द्युति:spreading lustreBy virtue of Thy compassion alone, Thou appeared before the Prachetas. Thou were seated on Thy vehicle Garuda, having eight arms, holding the resplendent discus and other divine weapons and spreading lustre all around.

तपोभिरेषामतिमात्रवर्धिभि: स यज्ञहिंसानिरतोऽपि पावित: । पिताऽपि तेषां गृहयातनारद- प्रदर्शितात्मा भवदात्मतां ययौ ॥५॥Tapobhireṣāmatimātravardhibhiḥ Sa yajñahiṁsānirato'pi pāvitaḥ । Pitā'pi teṣāṁ gṛhayātanārada- Pradarśitātmā bhavadātmatāṁ yayau ॥5॥தபோபி⁴ரேஷாமதிமாத்ரவர்தி⁴பி: ஸ யஜ்ஞஹிம்⁴ஸாநிரதோ'பி பாவித: । பிதா'பி தேஷாம் க்ருஹயாத³நாரத- ப்ரத³ர்ஶிதாத்மா ப⁴வதாத்மதாம் ய⁴யௌ ॥5॥ तपोभि:-एषाम्-by their penanceअति-मात्र-वर्धिभि:which was increasing in intensityस यज्ञ-हिंसा-निरत:-अपिhe, though engaged in killing animals for the sacrificesपावित:became purifiedपिता-अपि तेषां(he) their fatherगृहयात-नारद-(to whose) house Naarada wentप्रदर्शित-आत्मा(from Naarada) obtaining the knowledge of Aatmanभवत्-आत्मतां ययौattained to TheeBy the increasing strength of their penance, their father Praacheenbarhis also became purified who had slain many animals in the sacrificial fires. Naarada who had gone to his house, gave him the knowledge of Aatman by which he attained a form like Thine.

स्तवं जपन्तस्तममी जलान्तरे भवन्तमासेविषतायुतं समा: । भवत्सुखास्वादरसादमीष्वियान् बभूव कालो ध्रुववन्न शीघ्रता ॥४॥Stavaṁ japantastamamī jalāntare Bhavantamāseviṣatāyutaṁ samāḥ । Bhavatsukhāsvādarasādamīṣviyān Babhūva kālo dhruvavanna śīghratā ॥4॥ஸ்தவம் ஜபந்த³ஸ்தமமீ ஜலாந்த³ரே ப⁴வந்தமாஸே³விஷதாயுதம் ஸமா: । ப⁴வத்ஸுகாஸ்வாதரஸாதமீஷ்வியாந் பபூ³வ காலோ த்ருவவன்ன ஶீ஘்ரதா ॥4॥स्तवं जपन्त:-तम्-अमीthat hymn singing, these (Prachetaas)जल-अन्तरेin the waterभवन्तम्-आसेविषत-on Thee meditatedअयुतं समा:for ten thousand yearsभवत्-सुख-आस्वाद्-रसात्-because of the joy they were experiencing in meditating on Theeअमीषु-for themइयान् बभूव काल:such a long time passedध्रुववत्-न शीघ्रताlike Dhruva it did not happen quicklyThese devotees chanting the hymn, spent ten thousand years in water, in Thy worship and meditation on Thee. For the attainment of the bliss of Thy realisation, they had to spend this long period in austerities unlike Dhruva who got it very quickly.

तदा भवत्तीर्थमिदं समागतो भवो भवत्सेवकदर्शनादृत: । प्रकाशमासाद्य पुर: प्रचेतसा- मुपादिशत् भक्ततमस्तव स्तवम् ॥३॥Tadā bhavattīrthamidaṁ samāgato Bhavo bhavatsevakadarśanādṛtaḥ । Prakāśamāsādya puraḥ pracetasā- mupādiśat bhaktatamastava stavam ॥3॥ததா ப⁴வத்தீர்த²மிதம் ஸமாக²தோ ப⁴வோ ப⁴வத்ஸே³வகத³ர்ஶநாத்ருத: । ப்ரகாஶமாஸாத்ய பு⁴ர: ப்ரசேதஸா- முபாதி³ஶத் ப⁴க்தத³மஸ்தவ ஸ்தவம் ॥3॥तदा भवत्-तीर्थम्-इदम्then this Thy holy lakeसमागत: भव:frequented by Shivaभवत्-सेवक-दर्शन-आदृत:eager to see Thy devoteesप्रकाशम्-आसाद्यmanifested himselfपुर: प्रचेतसाम्-before the Prachetasउपादिशत्and taughtभक्ततम:-(himself) a great devotee to (Thee)तव स्तवंThy great hymnThen, Thy greatest devotee, Lord Shiva who is always eager to see Thy devotees, came to this holy lake of Thine and appearing before the Prachetaas, taught them a great hymn in praise of Thee.

पितु: सिसृक्षानिरतस्य शासनाद्- भवत्तपस्याभिरता दशापि ते पयोनिधिं पश्चिममेत्य तत्तटे सरोवरं सन्ददृशुर्मनोहरम् ॥२॥Pituḥ sisṛkṣāniratasya śāsanād- Bhavattapasyābhiratā daśāpi te Payonidhiṁ paścimametya tattate Sarovaraṁ sandadṛśurmanoharam ॥2॥பிது: ஸிஸ்ருக்ஷாநிரதஸ்ய ஶாஸநாத்- ப⁴வத்தபஸ்யாபிரதா தஶாபி தே ப⁴யோநிதிம் பஶ்சிமமேத்ய தத்தடே ஸரோவரம் ஸந்த³த்ரு³ஶுர்மநோஹரம் ॥2॥पितु: सिसृक्षा-निरतस्यthe father who was intent on creationशासनात्-by his directionभवत्-तपस्या-अभिरता दश-अपि तेthose ten engrossed upon meditating on Theeपयोनिधिं पश्चिमम्-एत्यgoing to the western seaतत्-तटे सरोवरं सन्ददृशु:-on its shore saw a lakeमनोहरंbeautifulCommanded by their father to multiply the species, these ten brothers, being firm believers in the importance of Thy worship, went to the western sea to meditate. On the shore of that sea they saw a beautiful lake.

पृथोस्तु नप्ता पृथुधर्मकर्मठ: प्राचीनबर्हिर्युवतौ शतद्रुतौ । प्रचेतसो नाम सुचेतस: सुता- नजीजनत्त्वत्करुणाङ्कुरानिव ॥१॥Pṛthostu naptā pṛthudharmakarmaṭhaḥ Prācīnabarhiryuvatau śatadrutau । Pracetaso nāma sucetasaḥ sutā- Najījanattvatkaruṇāṅkurāniva ॥1॥ப்ருதோஸ்து நப்தா ப்ருதுதர்மகர்மட: ப்ராசீநபர்ஹிர்யுவதௌ ஶதத்ருதௌ । ப்ரசேதஸோ நாம ஸுசேதஸ: ஸுதா- நஜீஜநத்த்வத்கருணாங்குராநிவ ॥1॥पृथो:-तु नप्ताPrithu's great grand sonपृथु-धर्म-कर्मठ:intensely performing righteous deedsप्राचीनबर्हि:-named Praacheenbarhiयुवतौ शतद्रुतौthrough young Shatadrutiप्रचेतस: नामby the name of Prachetasसुचेतस: सुतान्-pure minded sons (ten)अजीजनत्-gave birth toत्वत्-करुणा-अङ्कुरान्-इवlike sprouts of Thy compassion embodiedPrithu's great grand son Praacheenbarhis, who was reputed for his undertakings for the good of the world had the young lady Shatadruti for his wife. From her, as though sprouts of Thy compassion ,ten noble minded sons were born to him known by the group name of Prachetas.

जातस्य ध्रुवकुल एव तुङ्गकीर्ते- रङ्गस्य व्यजनि सुत: स वेननामा । यद्दोषव्यथितमति: स राजवर्य- स्त्वत्पादे निहितमना वनं गतोऽभूत् ॥१॥पापोऽपि क्षितितलपालनाय वेन: पौराद्यैरुपनिहित: कठोरवीर्य: । सर्वेभ्यो निजबलमेव सम्प्रशंसन् भूचक्रे तव यजनान्ययं न्यरौत्सीत् ॥२॥सम्प्राप्ते हितकथनाय तापसौघे मत्तोऽन्यो भुवनपतिर्न कश्चनेति । त्वन्निन्दावचनपरो मुनीश्वरैस्तै: शापाग्नौ शलभदशामनायि वेन: ॥३॥तन्नाशात् खलजनभीरुकैर्मुनीन्द्रै- स्तन्मात्रा चिरपरिरक्षिते तदङ्गे । त्यक्ताघे परिमथितादथोरुदण्डा- द्दोर्दण्डे परिमथिते त्वमाविरासी: ॥४॥विख्यात: पृथुरिति तापसोपदिष्टै: सूताद्यै: परिणुतभाविभूरिवीर्य: । वेनार्त्या कबलितसम्पदं धरित्री- माक्रान्तां निजधनुषा समामकार्षी: ॥५॥भूयस्तां निजकुलमुख्यवत्सयुक्त्यै- र्देवाद्यै: समुचितचारुभाजनेषु । अन्नादीन्यभिलषितानि यानि तानि स्वच्छन्दं सुरभितनूमदूदुहस्त्वम् ॥६॥आत्मानं यजति मखैस्त्वयि त्रिधाम- न्नारब्धे शततमवाजिमेधयागे । स्पर्धालु: शतमख एत्य नीचवेषो हृत्वाऽश्वं तव तनयात् पराजितोऽभूत् ॥७॥देवेन्द्रं मुहुरिति वाजिनं हरन्तं वह्नौ तं मुनिवरमण्डले जुहूषौ । रुन्धाने कमलभवे क्रतो: समाप्तौ साक्षात्त्वं मधुरिपुमैक्षथा: स्वयं स्वम् ॥८॥तद्दत्तं वरमुपलभ्य भक्तिमेकां गङ्गान्ते विहितपद: कदापि देव । सत्रस्थं मुनिनिवहं हितानि शंस- न्नैक्षिष्ठा: सनकमुखान् मुनीन् पुरस्तात् ॥९॥विज्ञानं सनकमुखोदितं दधान: स्वात्मानं स्वयमगमो वनान्तसेवी । तत्तादृक्पृथुवपुरीश सत्वरं मे रोगौघं प्रशमय वातगेहवासिन् ॥१०॥

विज्ञानं सनकमुखोदितं दधान: स्वात्मानं स्वयमगमो वनान्तसेवी । तत्तादृक्पृथुवपुरीश सत्वरं मे रोगौघं प्रशमय वातगेहवासिन् ॥१०॥Vijñānaṁ sanakamukhoditaṁ dadhānaḥ Svātmānaṁ svayamagamo vanāntasevī । Tattādṛkpṛthuvapurīśa satvaraṁ me Rogaughaṁ praśamaya vātagehavāsin ॥10॥விஜ்ஞாநம் ஸனகமுகோதிதம் ததாந: ஸ்வாத்மாநம் ஸ்வயமகமோ வநாந்தஸேவீ । தத்தாத்ருக் ப்ருதுபுரீஶ ஸத்வரம் மே ரோகௌகம் ப்ரஶமய வாஹிகேஹவாசின் ॥10॥ विज्ञानंthe (ultimate) knowledgeसनक-मुख-उदितंimparted by Sanaka and the other sagesदधान:receivingस्व-आत्मानं स्वयम्-अगम:Thou attained Thy own selfवन-अन्त-सेवीliving in the forestतत्-तादृक्-पृथु-वपु:-ईशO Lord! Of such nature embodied as Prithu!सत्वरं मेhastily myरोगौघंall ailmentsप्रशमयeradicateवातगेहवासिन्O Lord of Guruvaayur!Receiving the ultimate knowledge imparted by Sanaka and other sages, and living in the forest, Thou realised Thy own self. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who embodied Thyself as Prithu! Be pleased to quickly cure me of all my ailments.

तद्दत्तं वरमुपलभ्य भक्तिमेकां गङ्गान्ते विहितपद: कदापि देव । सत्रस्थं मुनिनिवहं हितानि शंस- न्नैक्षिष्ठा: सनकमुखान् मुनीन् पुरस्तात् ॥९॥Taddattaṁ varamupalabhya bhaktimekāṁ Gaṅgānte vihitapadaḥ kadāpi deva । Satrasthaṁ muninivahaṁ hitāni śansa- nnaikṣiṣṭhāḥ sanakamukhān munīn purastāt ॥9॥தத்தத்தம் வரமுபலப்ய பக்திமேகம் கங்காந்தே விஹிதபத: கதாபி தேவ । ஸத்ரஸ்தம் முனிநிவஹம் ஹிதாநி ஶன்ஸ- ந்நைக்ஷிஷ்டா: ஸனகமுகாந் முனீன் புரஸ்தாத் ॥9॥तत्-दत्तं वरम्-उपलभ्यgetting a boon given by Himभक्तिम्-एकांfirm devotionगङ्गा-अन्ते विहित-पद: कदापिon the banks of Gangaa having established residence, onceदेवO Lord!सत्रस्थं मुनि-निवहंto the group of sages who were doing Yanjyaहितानि शंसन्-preaching spiritual welfareऐक्षिष्ठा:(Thou as Prithu) sawसनक-मुखान् मुनीन् पुरस्तात्the sages Sanaka and others in frontO Lord! After getting firm devotion alone as a boon from Him (Vishnu), Thou established Thy residence on the banks of Gangaa. Once as Thou were expounding Dharma to the sages who had assembled there for Yanjya, Thou saw the Sanaka and other sages before Thee.

देवेन्द्रं मुहुरिति वाजिनं हरन्तं वह्नौ तं मुनिवरमण्डले जुहूषौ । रुन्धाने कमलभवे क्रतो: समाप्तौ साक्षात्त्वं मधुरिपुमैक्षथा: स्वयं स्वम् ॥८॥Devendraṁ muhuriti vājinaṁ harantaṁ Vahnau taṁ munivaramandale juhūṣau । Rundhāne kamalabhave kratoḥ samāptau Sākṣāttvaṁ madhuripumaikṣathāḥ svayaṁ svam ॥8॥தேவேந்திரம் முஹுரிதி வாஜினம் ஹரந்தம் வஹ்நௌ தம் முனிவரமண்டலே ஜுஹூஷௌ । ருந்தாநே கமலபவே க்ரதோ: ஸமாப்தௌ ஸாக்ஷாத்த்வம் மதுரிபுமைக்ஷதா: ஸ்வயம் ஸ்வம் ॥8॥ देवेन्द्रं मुहु:-इतिIndra again and again thusवाजिनं हरन्तंwho was stealing the horseवह्नौ तंin the fire, himमुनिवर-मण्डले जुहूषौwhen the sages were about to offer as oblationरुन्धाने कमलभवेprevented by Brahmaक्रतो: समाप्तौat the end of the Yanjyaसाक्षात्-त्वंThou in front of Thee (Prithu)मधुरिपुम्-ऐक्षथा:saw Madhuripu (Maha Vishnu)स्वयं स्वम्Thyself ThouIndra who was again and again trying to steal the sacrificial horse, was about to be offered into the fire by the sacrificing sages, but they were restrained to do so by Brahmaa. When the sacrifice was completed Thou as Prithu saw Thyself manifested in Thy real form as Vishnu, the slayer of the demon Madhu.

आत्मानं यजति मखैस्त्वयि त्रिधाम- न्नारब्धे शततमवाजिमेधयागे । स्पर्धालु: शतमख एत्य नीचवेषो हृत्वाऽश्वं तव तनयात् पराजितोऽभूत् ॥७॥Ātmānaṁ yajati makhais tvayi tridhāma- nnārabdhe śatatamavājimedhayāge । Spardhāluḥ śatamakha etya nīcaveṣo Hṛtvā'śvaṁ tava tanayāt parājito'bhūt ॥7॥ஆத்மானம் யஜதி ம஖ைஸ் த்வயி த்ரிதாம- ந்நாரப்தே ஶததமவாஜிமேதயாகே । ஸ்பர்தாலு: ஶதமக ஹேத்ய நீசவேஷோ ஹ்ருத்வா'ஶ்வம் தவ தனயாத் பராஜிதோ'பூத் ॥7॥आत्मानं यजति मखै:-त्वयिas Thou were sacrificing to Thyself by Yanjyasत्रिधामन्-O Lord of the three worlds!आरब्धे शततम-वाजि-मेध-यागे(and) at the starting of the hundredth Ashwamedha Yanjyaस्पर्धालु शतमख:jealous Indraएत्य नीचवेष:came as a barbarianहृत्वा-अश्वंstealing away the horseतव तनयात्by Thy sonपराजित:-अभूत्was defeatedO Lord of the three worlds! As Thou (as Prithu) were performing sacrifices to Thyself, and were to begin the hundredth Ashwamedha Yanjya, Indra became jealous. In the guise of a lowly person he stole the Yanjya horse. He was then defeated by Thy son (Vijitashwana).

भूयस्तां निजकुलमुख्यवत्सयुक्त्यै- र्देवाद्यै: समुचितचारुभाजनेषु । अन्नादीन्यभिलषितानि यानि तानि स्वच्छन्दं सुरभितनूमदूदुहस्त्वम् ॥६॥Bhūyastāṁ nijakulamukhyavatsayuktyaiḥ Devādyaiḥ samucitacārubhājaneṣu । Annādīnyabhilaṣitāni yāni tāni Svacchandaṁ surabhitanūmadūduhastvam ॥6॥பூயஸ்தாம் நிஜகுலமுக்யவத்ஸயுக்த்யை: தேவாத்யை: ஸமுசிதசாருபாஜநேஷு । அன்னாதீந்யபிலஷிதாநி யாநி தாநி ஸ்வச்சந்தம் ஸுரபிதநூமதூதுஹஸ்த்வம் ॥6॥भूय:-तांthen the earthनिज-कुल-मुख्य-वत्स-युक्तै:-with the leader of each group as the calfदेव-आद्यै:by the gods and othersसमुचित-चारु-भाजनेषुin appropriate special vesselsअन्नादीनि-अभिलषितानिfood and other things as desiredयानि तानिthis and thatस्वच्छन्दंunhesitatinglyसुरभि-तनूम्(the earth) in the form of Surabhi (the celestial cow)अदूदुह: त्वम्Thou milkedThou then made the gods and other species of beings to freely milk the Earth who had become like the celestial cow Surabhi. The leaders of the different groups of gods and others acted as calves milking their desired requirements in appropriate special vessels.

विख्यात: पृथुरिति तापसोपदिष्टै: सूताद्यै: परिणुतभाविभूरिवीर्य: । वेनार्त्या कबलितसम्पदं धरित्री- माक्रान्तां निजधनुषा समामकार्षी: ॥५॥Vikhyātaḥ pṛthuriti tāpasopadiṣṭaiḥ Sūtādyaiḥ pariṇutabhāvibhūrivīryaḥ । Venārtyā kabalitasampadaṁ dharitri- mākrāntāṁ nijadhanuṣā samāmakārṣīḥ ॥5॥விக்ஹ்யாத: ப்ருதுரிதி தாபஸோபதிஷ்டை: ஸூதாத்யை: பரிநுதபாவிபூரிவீர்ய: । வேனார்த்யா கபலிதஸம்பதம் தரித்ரீ- மாக்ராந்தாம் நிஜதனுஷா ஸமாமகார்ஷீ: ॥5॥विख्यात: पृथु-इतिfamous as Prithuतापस-उपदिष्टै:thus being advised by the great sagesसूत-आद्यै:the minstrels and othersपरिणुत-भावि-भूरि-वीर्य:sang in praise of Thy future achievementsवेन-आर्त्याtormented by Venaकबलित-सम्पदं धरित्रीम्-the earth who had withdrawn her resources into her interiorआक्रान्ताम् निज-धनुषाwas attacked by Thy arrowसमाम्-अकार्षी(and was) made evenThis was the famous incarnation of Thee as Prithu, the sages declared thus. The minstrels and others sang in praise of Thy future achievements. The Earth who had withdrawn all her resources into her interior because of the oppression of Vena, was attacked by Thy bow and arrow, and was made to yield back the resources.

तन्नाशात् खलजनभीरुकैर्मुनीन्द्रै- स्तन्मात्रा चिरपरिरक्षिते तदङ्गे । त्यक्ताघे परिमथितादथोरुदण्डा- द्दोर्दण्डे परिमथिते त्वमाविरासी: ॥४॥Tannāśāt khalajanabhīrukairmunīndraiḥ Tanmātrā ciraparirakṣite tadaṅge । Tyaktāghe parimathitādathorudaṇḍād- dordaṇḍe parimathite tvamāvirāsīḥ ॥4॥தந்நாஶாத் க்ஹலஜநபீருகைர்முநீந்த்ரை: தன்மாத்ரா சிறபரிரக்ஷிதே ததங்கே । த்யக்தாக்ஹே பரிமதிதாததோருதண்டாத்- தோர்தண்டே பரிமதிதே த்வமாவிராஸீ: ॥4॥तत्-नाशात्because of his deathखलजन-भीरुकै:- मुनीन्द्रै:-afraid of the wicked people, the great sagesतत्-मात्रा चिरपरिरक्षिते तत्-अङ्गेfrom his body preserved by his mother for a long timeत्यक्त-अघेremoved sinsपरिमथितात्-अथ-उरुदण्डात्-by churning his thighsदोर्दण्डे परिमथितेthen (when) the hands (were) being churnedत्वम्-आविरासीत्Thou manifested ThyselfAfter his destruction, the sages feared that the absence of a ruler would lead to the tyranny of wicked people. So they took the body of Vena from his mother who had preserved it for a long time and churned the thighs. Thus his body became sinless. Then when his arms were churned, from there Thou appeared (in the form of Prithu).

सम्प्राप्ते हितकथनाय तापसौघे मत्तोऽन्यो भुवनपतिर्न कश्चनेति । त्वन्निन्दावचनपरो मुनीश्वरैस्तै: शापाग्नौ शलभदशामनायि वेन: ॥३॥Samprāpte hitakathanāya tāpasaughe Matto'nyo bhuvanapatirna kaścaneti । Tvannindāvacanaparo munīśvarais taiḥ Śāpāgnau śalabhadaśāmanāyi venaḥ ॥3॥ஸம்ப்ராப்தே ஹிதகதனாய தாபஸௌகே மத்தோ'ன்யோ புவனபதிர்ந கஷ்சநேதி । த்வந்நிந்தாவசனபரோ முனீஶ்வரைஸ் தை: ஶாபாக்னௌ ஶலபதஶாமநாயி வேன: ॥3॥सम्प्राप्तेapproaching himहितकथनायto advise him in regard to right conductतापस-औघेwhen a group of sagesमत्त:-अन्य: भुवनपति:-न कश्चन्-इतिother than me there is no lord of the earth saying thusत्वत्-निन्दा-वचन-पर:indulging in defaming Theeमुनीश्वरै:-तै:by those great sagesशाप-अग्नौin the fire of their curseशलभ-दशाम्-अनायिwas destroyed like a mothवेन:VenaWhen a group of sages approached him to advise him as to the right conduct, he indulged in abusing Thee declaring that there was no other ruler on the earth other than himself. The enraged sages cursed him. In the flame of the curse Vena was destroyed like a moth.

पापोऽपि क्षितितलपालनाय वेन: पौराद्यैरुपनिहित: कठोरवीर्य: । सर्वेभ्यो निजबलमेव सम्प्रशंसन् भूचक्रे तव यजनान्ययं न्यरौत्सीत् ॥२॥Pāpo'pi kṣititalapālanāya venaḥ Paurādyairupanihitaḥ kaṭhoravīryaḥ । Sarvebhyo nijabalameva sampraśaṁsan Bhūcakre tava yajñānānyayaṁ nyarautsīt ॥2॥பாபோ'பி க்ஷிதிதலபாலநாய வேந: பௌராத்யைருபநிஹித: கடோரவீர்ய: । ஸர்வேப்யோ நிஜபலமேவ ஸம்ப்ரசன்சன் பூசக்ரே தவ யஜ்ஞாநாந்யயம் ந்யரோத்ஸீத் ॥2॥पाप:-अपिthough evil mindedक्षिति-तल-पालनायfor the governance of the countryवेन: पौराद्यै:-उपनिहित:by the leading citizens, Vena was made the kingकठोर-वीर्य:being of very great prowessसर्वेभ्य: निज-बलम्-एवto all his might aloneसम्प्रशंसन्boasting aboutभूचक्रेall over the earthतव यजनानि-sacrifices to Theeअयं न्यरौत्सीत्prohibitedThough evil minded, Vena who was of great prowess was made the king by the leading citizens for the governance of the country. He always boasted of his strength and prohibited the practice of all forms of Thy worship and sacrifices.

जातस्य ध्रुवकुल एव तुङ्गकीर्ते- रङ्गस्य व्यजनि सुत: स वेननामा । यद्दोषव्यथितमति: स राजवर्य- स्त्वत्पादे निहितमना वनं गतोऽभूत् ॥१॥Jātasya dhruvakula eva tuṅgakīrter Aṅgasya vyajani sutaḥ sa venanāmā । Yaddoṣavyathitamatiḥ sa rājavarya- stvatpāde nihitamanaā vanaṁ gato'bhūt ॥1॥ஜாதஸ்ய த்ருவகுல ஏவ துங்ககீர்தேர் அங்கஸ்ய வ்யஜநி ஸுத: ஸ வேநநாமா । யத்தோஷவ்யதிதமதி: ஸ ராஜவர்ய- ஸ்த்வத்பாதே நிஹிதமநா வநம் கதோ'பூத் ॥1॥ जातस्य ध्रुवकुले-एवwho was born in the line of Dhruva itselfतुङ्ग-कीर्ते:-अङ्गस्यto Anga of great fameव्यजनि सुत: स वेन-नामाwas born the son named Venaयत्-दोष-व्यथित-मति:saddened by whose evil deedsस: राजवर्य:-that noble kingत्वत्-पादे निहित-मनाwith his mind fixed on Thy feetवनं गत:-अभूत्took to the forestIn the line of Dhruva was the very famous king Anga whose son was Vena. Distressed at the evil nature of his son, the noble king took to the forest with his mind fixed on Thy lotus feet alone.

उत्तानपादनृपतेर्मनुनन्दनस्य जाया बभूव सुरुचिर्नितरामभीष्टा । अन्या सुनीतिरिति भर्तुरनादृता सा त्वामेव नित्यमगति: शरणं गताऽभूत् ॥१॥अङ्के पितु: सुरुचिपुत्रकमुत्तमं तं दृष्ट्वा ध्रुव: किल सुनीतिसुतोऽधिरोक्ष्यन् । आचिक्षिपे किल शिशु: सुतरां सुरुच्या दुस्सन्त्यजा खलु भवद्विमुखैरसूया ॥२॥त्वन्मोहिते पितरि पश्यति दारवश्ये दूरं दुरुक्तिनिहत: स गतो निजाम्बाम् । साऽपि स्वकर्मगतिसन्तरणाय पुंसां त्वत्पादमेव शरणं शिशवे शशंस ॥३॥आकर्ण्य सोऽपि भवदर्चननिश्चितात्मा मानी निरेत्य नगरात् किल पञ्चवर्ष: । सन्दृष्टनारदनिवेदितमन्त्रमार्ग- स्त्वामारराध तपसा मधुकाननान्ते ॥४॥ताते विषण्णहृदये नगरीं गतेन श्रीनारदेन परिसान्त्वितचित्तवृत्तौ । बालस्त्वदर्पितमना: क्रमवर्धितेन निन्ये कठोरतपसा किल पञ्चमासान् ॥५॥तावत्तपोबलनिरुच्छ्-वसिते दिगन्ते देवार्थितस्त्वमुदयत्करुणार्द्रचेता: । त्वद्रूपचिद्रसनिलीनमते: पुरस्ता- दाविर्बभूविथ विभो गरुडाधिरूढ: ॥६॥ त्वद्दर्शनप्रमदभारतरङ्गितं तं दृग्भ्यां निमग्नमिव रूपरसायने ते । तुष्टूषमाणमवगम्य कपोलदेशे संस्पृष्टवानसि दरेण तथाऽऽदरेण ॥७॥तावद्विबोधविमलं प्रणुवन्तमेन- माभाषथास्त्वमवगम्य तदीयभावम् । राज्यं चिरं समनुभूय भजस्व भूय: सर्वोत्तरं ध्रुव पदं विनिवृत्तिहीनम् ॥८॥इत्यूचिषि त्वयि गते नृपनन्दनोऽसा- वानन्दिताखिलजनो नगरीमुपेत: । रेमे चिरं भवदनुग्रहपूर्णकाम- स्ताते गते च वनमादृतराज्यभार: ॥९॥यक्षेण देव निहते पुनरुत्तमेऽस्मिन् यक्षै: स युद्धनिरतो विरतो मनूक्त्या । शान्त्या प्रसन्नहृदयाद्धनदादुपेता- त्त्वद्भक्तिमेव सुदृढामवृणोन्महात्मा ॥१०॥अन्ते भवत्पुरुषनीतविमानयातो मात्रा समं ध्रुवपदे मुदितोऽयमास्ते । एवं स्वभृत्यजनपालनलोलधीस्त्वं वातालयाधिप निरुन्धि ममामयौघान् ॥११॥

अन्ते भवत्पुरुषनीतविमानयातो मात्रा समं ध्रुवपदे मुदितोऽयमास्ते । एवं स्वभृत्यजनपालनलोलधीस्त्वं वातालयाधिप निरुन्धि ममामयौघान् ॥११॥Ante bhavatpuruṣanītavimānayāto Mātrā samaṁ dhruvapade mudito'yamāste । Evaṁ svabhṛtyajanapālanaloladhīstvaṁ Vātālayādhipa nirundhi mamāmayaughān ॥11॥ அந்தே ப³வத்புருஷநீதவிமாநயாதோ மாத்ரா ஸமம் த்ருவபதே முதிதோ'யமாஸ்தே । ஏவம் ஸ்வப்ருத்யஜநபாலநலோலதீஸ்த்வம் வாதாலயாதிப³ நிருந்தி மமாமயௌ³காந் ॥11॥अन्तेfinallyभवत्-पुरुष-नीत-विमान-यात:going in the celestial car brought by Thy attendantsमात्रा समंalong with his motherध्रुवपदे मुदित:-अयम्-आस्ते(he) is living happily even now in Dhruvalokaएवंin this mannerस्व-भृत्य-जन-पालन-लोल-धी:-त्वंThou who are ever eager minded to protect Thy devoteesवातालयाधिपO Lord of Guruvaayur!निरुन्धिcureमम-आमय-औघान्my hoards of ailmentsFinally, leaving along with his mother in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants, he is even now living happily in Dhruvaloka. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are ever intent on protecting Thy devotees, cure my hoards of ailments.

यक्षेण देव निहते पुनरुत्तमेऽस्मिन् यक्षै: स युद्धनिरतो विरतो मनूक्त्या । शान्त्या प्रसन्नहृदयाद्धनदादुपेता- त्त्वद्भक्तिमेव सुदृढामवृणोन्महात्मा ॥१०॥Yakṣeṇa deva nihate punaruttame'smin Yakṣaiḥ sa yuddhanirato virato manūktyā । Śāntyā prasannahṛdayāddhanadādupeta- tvadbhaktimeva sudṛḍhāmavṛṇonmahātmā ॥10॥யக்ஷேண தேவ நிஹதே புனருத்தமே'ஸ்மின் யக்ஷை: ஸ யுத்தநிரதோ வி²ரதோ மனூக்த்யா । ஶாந்த்யா ப்ரஸந்நஹ்ரு³தயா³த்³த³னதா³து³பேத- த்வத³ப³க்திமேவ ஸுத்ருடாமவ்ருணோந்மஹாத்மா ॥10॥यक्षेणby YakshaदेवO Lord!निहते पुन:-being killed, thenउत्तमे-अस्मिन्this Uttama (Dhruva's brother)यक्षै: स युद्ध-निरत:he engaged in a fight with the Yakshasविरत: मनु-उक्त्याand withdrew on Manu's adviceशान्त्या प्रसन्न-हृदयात्-who was happy at the peaceful nature (of Dhruva)धनदात्-उपेतात्from Kuber who had approached him (Dhruva)त्वत्-भक्तिम्-एव सुदृढाम्-Thy firm devotion aloneअवृणोत्-asked for as a boonमहात्माthe great souled one (Dhruva)When Uttama, Dhruva's brother was killed by Yaksha, Dhruva battled with Yaksha, but withdrew on Manu's advice. Pleased with Dhruva's peaceful nature, Kuber came and offered him a boon, but the great soul asked only for firm devotion to Thee.

इत्यूचिषि त्वयि गते नृपनन्दनोऽसा- वानन्दिताखिलजनो नगरीमुपेत: । रेमे चिरं भवदनुग्रहपूर्णकाम- स्ताते गते च वनमादृतराज्यभार: ॥९॥Ityūciṣi tvayi gate nṛpanandano'sā- vānanditākhilajano nagarīmupetaḥ । Reme ciraṁ bhavadanugrahapūrṇakāma- stāte gate ca vanamādṛtarājyabhāraḥ ॥9॥இத்யூசிஷி த்வயி க²தே ந்ருபநந்த³நோ'ஸா- வாநந்திதாகி³லஜனோ நக³ரீமுபேத: । ரேமே சிரம் ப³வத³னுக்ரஹபூர்ணகாம- ஸ்தாதே க²தே ச வனமாத்ருதராஜ்யபார: ॥9॥इति-ऊचिषिhaving said soत्वयि गतेwhen Thou had gone awayनृपनन्दन:-असौ-this princeआनन्दित-अखिल-जन:pleasing all the peopleनगरीम्-उपेत:reached the townरेमे चिरंenjoyed for a long timeभवत्-अनुग्रह-पूर्ण-काम:-with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy graceताते गते च वनम्-and when his father had gone to the forestआदृत-राज्य-भार:taking over the administration of the kingdomWhen Thou disappeared after having said so, this prince Dhruva came back to town delighting all people. When his father had gone to the forest, taking over the administration of the kingdom, with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace, he lived happily for a long time.

तावद्विबोधविमलं प्रणुवन्तमेन- माभाषथास्त्वमवगम्य तदीयभावम् । राज्यं चिरं समनुभूय भजस्व भूय: सर्वोत्तरं ध्रुव पदं विनिवृत्तिहीनम् ॥८॥Tāvadvibodhavimalaṁ praṇuvantamena- mābhāṣathāstvamavagamya tadīyabhāvam । Rājyaṁ ciraṁ samanubhūya bhajasva bhūyaḥ Sarvottaraṁ dhruva padaṁ vinivṛttihīnam ॥8॥தாவத் வி³போத³விமலம் ப்ரணுவந்தமென- மாபாஷதாஸ்த்வமவகம்ய ததீயபாவம் । ராஜ்யம் சிரம் ஸமனுபூ³ய ப⁴ஜஸ்வ பூ⁴ய: ஸர்வோத்தரம் த்ருவ பதம் விநிவ்ருத்திஹீநம் ॥8॥तावत्-thenविबोध-विमलंwho had been cleansed of all taint by knowledgeप्रणुवन्तम्-एनम्-who was profusely praising Theeअभाषथा:-त्वम्-Thou did tell (him)अवगम्य तदीय-भावम्knowing what he had in mindराज्यं चिरं समनुभूय(that) after enjoying kingship for longभजस्व भूय:attain, thereafter,सर्वोत्तरं ध्रुव पदंthe loftiest of status of Dhruvaविनिवृत्ति-हीनंfrom which there is no returnHe then sang Thy praise profusely, having been purified and enlightened by pure knowledge. Knowing what he had in mind, Thou blessed him to enjoy the kingdom for long and then attain the loftiest of states, that of Dhruva, from where there is no return to lower states.

त्वद्दर्शनप्रमदभारतरङ्गितं तं दृग्भ्यां निमग्नमिव रूपरसायने ते । तुष्टूषमाणमवगम्य कपोलदेशे संस्पृष्टवानसि दरेण तथाऽऽदरेण ॥७॥Tvaddarśanapramadabhārataraṅgitaṁ taṁ Dṛgbhyāṁ nimagnamiva rūparasāyane te । Tuṣṭūṣamāṇamavagamya kapoladeśe Saṁspṛṣṭavānasi dareṇa tathā'dareṇa ॥7॥த்வத³ர்சனப்ரமதபா³ரத³ரங்கிதம் தம் த்ருக்³ப்யாம் நிமக்நமிவ ரூபரஸாயனே தே । துஷ்டூஷமாணமவகம்ய கபோ³லதேஶே ஸஂஸ்ப்ருஷ்டவானஸி தரேண ததா'த³ரேண ॥7॥त्वत्-दर्शनat the sight of Theeप्रमद-भार-तरङ्गितं तंwhich completely overwhelmed him with waves of Bliss and ecstasyदृग्भ्याम् निमग्नम्-इवas if his eyes were submergedरूप-रसायने तेin the nectar of Thy entrancing formतुष्टूषमाणम्-desirous of singing Thy praiseअवगम्यunderstanding (Thou)कपोल-देशेon the cheekसंस्पृष्टवान्-असिThou did touch (him)दरेणby the conchतथा-आदरेणand with great affectionAt Thy divine sight, Dhruva was completely overwhelmed and was full of the the waves of Bliss and ecstasy. As his eyes were submerged in the nectar of Thy entrancing form he was desirous of singing Thy praise. Realising his incapability of finding words, Thou with great affection touched his cheek with the conch.

तावत्तपोबलनिरुच्छ्-वसिते दिगन्ते देवार्थितस्त्वमुदयत्करुणार्द्रचेता: । त्वद्रूपचिद्रसनिलीनमते: पुरस्ता- दाविर्बभूविथ विभो गरुडाधिरूढ: ॥६॥Tāvattapobalanirucchvasite digante Devārthitastvamudayatkaruṇārdracetāḥ । Tvadrūpacidrasanilīnamateḥ purastā- dāvirbabhūvitha vibho garuḍādhirūḍhaḥ ॥6॥தாவத் தபோப³லநிருச்சுவஸிதே திக³ந்தே தேவார்திதஸ்த்வமுதயத்கருணார்த்ரசேதா: । த்வத்ரூபசித்ரஸநிலீனமதே: புரஸ்தா- தாவிர்பபூ³வித³ வி²போ³ க³ருடா³திரூட³: ॥6॥तावत्-तपो-बल-निरुच्छ्-वसितेthen,suffocated by the power of penance (of Dhruva)दिगन्तेall the directionsदेव-अर्थित:-त्वम्-to the devas who were seeking relief, (to them) Thouउदयत्-करुणा-आर्द्र-चेता:with a mind surging with compassionत्वत्-रूप-चित्-रस-निलीन-मते:(Dhruva) whose mind was absorbed with the Supreme Consciousness Bliss, which had assumed Thy formपुरस्तात्-in front ( of Dhruva)आविर्बभूविथ(Thou) appearedविभोO Lord!गरुड-अधिरूढ:mounted on GarudaThen, when all around in all the directions there was suffocation by the power of Dhruva's penance, the devas were seeking relief. Then, Thou surging with compassion, appeared seated on Garuda, in front of Dhruva, whose mind was absorbed in contemplation of the Supreme Consciousness Bliss which had assumed Thy form.

ताते विषण्णहृदये नगरीं गतेन श्रीनारदेन परिसान्त्वितचित्तवृत्तौ । बालस्त्वदर्पितमना: क्रमवर्धितेन निन्ये कठोरतपसा किल पञ्चमासान् ॥५॥Tāte viṣaṇṇahṛdaye nagarīṁ gatena Śrīnāradena parisāntvitacittavṛttau । Bālastvadarpitamanāḥ kramavardhitena Ninye kaṭhoratapasā kila pañcamāsān ॥5॥தாதே விஷண்ணஹ்ரு³தயே நக³ரீம் க²தேந ஶ்ரீநாரதேந பரிசாந்த்விதசித்தவ்ருத்தௌ । பாலஸ்த்வத³ர்பிதமநாஹ க்ரமவர்த³தினேந நிந்யே க²டோ³ரதபஸா கில பஞ்சமாஸாந் ॥5॥ताते विषण्ण-हृदयेwhile the father was full of remorse,नगरीं गतेन श्रीनारदेनby Shri Naarada, who had gone to the townपरिसान्त्वित-चित्त-वृतौ(his) upset mind was consoledबाल:-त्वत्-अर्पित-मना:(meanwhile) the boy with his mind fixed on Theeक्रम-वर्धितेनwith increasingनिन्ये कठोर-तपसाintensity carried out severe penanceकिल पञ्च-मासान्indeed for five monthsThe king who was full of remorse, was pacified and consoled by Naarada who had gone to the town. Dhruva, the boy with his mind fixed on Thee, spent five months in severe penance, with increasing intensity.

आकर्ण्य सोऽपि भवदर्चननिश्चितात्मा मानी निरेत्य नगरात् किल पञ्चवर्ष: । सन्दृष्टनारदनिवेदितमन्त्रमार्ग- स्त्वामारराध तपसा मधुकाननान्ते ॥४॥Ākarṇya so'pi bhavadarcananiścitātmā Mānī niretya nagarāt kila pañcavarṣaḥ । Sandṛṣṭanāradaniveditamantramārga- stvāmārarādha tapasā madhukānanānte ॥4॥ ஆகர்ண்ய ஸோ'பி ப³வத³ர்சநநிஶ்சிதாத்மா மானீ நிரேத்ய நகராத் கில பஞ்சவர்ஷ: । ஸ²ந்த்ருஷ்ட³நாரத³நிவேதி³தமந்த்ரமார்க²- ஸ்த்வாமாரராத³ தபஸா மதுகா³னனாந்தே ॥4॥आकर्ण्य स:-अपिhearing, he alsoभवत्-अर्चन-निश्चित-आत्माdetermined to devote himself to Thy worshipमानी निरेत्य नगरात्he who had self respect, leaving the townकिल पञ्च-वर्ष:(though) indeed five years of ageसन्दृष्ट-नारदmeeting Naarada,निवेदित-मन्त्र-मार्ग:-and receiving instructions in the path of Mantra (japa)त्वाम्-आरराध तपसाpropitiated Thee by penanceमधु-कानन-अन्तेat the end of the forest named MadhuThe self respecting Dhruva, who was only five years of age, hearing his mother's words, became determined to worship Thee, and so left the town. In the forest of Madhuvana, he propitiated Thee by penance, following the method of Mantra japa and the Mantra given to him by Naarada, whom he had met on the way.

त्वन्मोहिते पितरि पश्यति दारवश्ये दूरं दुरुक्तिनिहत: स गतो निजाम्बाम् । साऽपि स्वकर्मगतिसन्तरणाय पुंसां त्वत्पादमेव शरणं शिशवे शशंस ॥३॥Tvanmohite pitari paśyati dāravaśye Dūraṁ duruktinihataḥ sa gato nijāmbām । Sā'pi svakarmagatisantaraṇāya puṁsāṁ Tvatpādameva śaraṇaṁ śiśave śaśaṁsa ॥3॥த்வன்மோஹிதே பிதரி ப²ஶ்யதி தாரவஶ்யே தூரம் துருக்திநிஹத: ஸ க²தோ நிஜாம்பாம் । ஸா'பி ஸ்வகர்மகதிஸந்த³ரணாய பு²ம்ஸாம் த்வத்பா³தமேவ ஶரணம் ஶிஶவே ஶஶம்ஸ ॥3॥त्वत्-मोहिते पितरिbeing under the influence of Thy Maayaa, the fatherपश्यति दार्-वश्येseeing hen-peckedदूरं दुरुक्ति-निहत: स:he (Dhruva) was taken aback and hurt by the cruel wordsगत: निज-अम्बाम्(he) went to his own motherसा-अपिshe alsoस्व-कर्म-गति-सन्तरणायfor getting over the effects of ones own actionsपुंसांfor human beingsत्वत्-पादम्-एव शरणंThy feet are the only refugeशिशवे शशंस(thus) she advised the childThe hen-pecked king who was under the influence of Thy Maayaa, silently looked on as Dhruva was scolded by Suruchi. Hurt for being scolded, Dhruva then went to his own mother Suneeti who advised him that the only way to overcome the evils of ones own past actions is to seek shelter at Thy feet.

अङ्के पितु: सुरुचिपुत्रकमुत्तमं तं दृष्ट्वा ध्रुव: किल सुनीतिसुतोऽधिरोक्ष्यन् । आचिक्षिपे किल शिशु: सुतरां सुरुच्या दुस्सन्त्यजा खलु भवद्विमुखैरसूया ॥२॥Aṅke pituḥ suruciputrakamutthamaṁ taṁ Dṛṣṭvā dhruvaḥ kila sunītisuto'dhiroḳṣyan । Ācikṣipe kila śiśuḥ sutarāṁ surucyā Dussantyajā khalu bhavadvimukhairasūyā ॥2॥அங்கே பிது: ஸுருசிபுத்ரகமுத்தமம் தம் த்ருஷ்ட்வா த்ருவ: கில ஸுநீதிஸுதோ'தhiroக்ஷ்யன் । ஆசிக்ஷிபே கில ஶிசு: ஸுதராம் ஸுருச்யா துஸ்:ஸந்த்யஜா க²லு ப³வத்³விமுகைரஸூயா ॥2॥अङ्के पितु:on (his) father's lapसुरुचि-पुत्रकम्-उत्तमं तंSuruchi's son, that Uttama,दृष्ट्वा ध्रुव: किलseeing Dhruva indeedसुनीति-सुत:-अधिरोक्ष्यन्the son of Suneeti (who was) about to get up,आचिक्षिपे किल शिशु:the child was severely scoldedसुतरां सुरुच्याas a result by Suruchiदुस्सन्त्यजा खलुindeed (jealousy) cannot be given upभवत्-विमुखै:-by those who are not devoted to TheeअसूयाjealousySeeing Uttama, Suruchi's son, seated on his father's lap, Suneeti's son Dhruva also tried to get up. But as a result, the child was severely scolded by Suruchi. Indeed, jealousy cannot be given up, by those who are not devoted to Thee.

उत्तानपादनृपतेर्मनुनन्दनस्य जाया बभूव सुरुचिर्नितरामभीष्टा ।अन्या सुनीतिरिति भर्तुरनादृता सा त्वामेव नित्यमगति: शरणं गताऽभूत् ॥१॥Uttānapādanṛpatermanunandanasya Jāyā babhūva surucirnitarāmabhīṣṭā । Anyā sunītiriti bharturanādṛtā sā Tvāmeva nityamagatiḥ śaraṇaṁ gatā'bhūt ॥1॥உத்தானபாதந்ருபதேர்மனுநந்தநஸ்ய ஜாயா பபூவ ஸுருசிர்நிதராமபீஷ்டா । அன்யா ஸுநீதிரிதி பார்துரனாத்ருதா ஸா த்வாமேவ நித்யமகதிஹி ஶரணம் கதா'பூத் ॥1॥उत्तानपाद-नृपते:-king Uttaanpaad'sमनु-नन्दनस्यwho was the son of Manuजाया बभूव सुरुचि:-wife became Suruchiनितराम्-अभीष्टाextremely dearअन्या सुनीति:-इतिthe other (wife) named Suneetiभर्तु:-अनादृता साshe was neglected by her husbandत्वाम्-एव नित्यम्-in Thee alone, who are eternalअगति:-शरणंrefuge of the helpless (she)गता-अभूत्(in Thee) took refugeTo the king Uttaanpaada, the son of Manu, his wife Suruchi was extremely dear. The other wife Suneeti being ignored by her husband, was helpless and took shelter in Thee alone who are eternal refuge of the helpless.

मूर्तिर्हि धर्मगृहिणी सुषुवे भवन्तं नारायणं नरसखं महितानुभावम् । यज्जन्मनि प्रमुदिता: कृततूर्यघोषा: पुष्पोत्करान् प्रववृषुर्नुनुवु: सुरौघा: ॥२॥दैत्यं सहस्रकवचं कवचै: परीतं साहस्रवत्सरतपस्समराभिलव्यै: । पर्यायनिर्मिततपस्समरौ भवन्तौ शिष्टैककङ्कटममुं न्यहतां सलीलम् ॥३॥अन्वाचरन्नुपदिशन्नपि मोक्षधर्मं त्वं भ्रातृमान् बदरिकाश्रममध्यवात्सी: । शक्रोऽथ ते शमतपोबलनिस्सहात्मा दिव्याङ्गनापरिवृतं प्रजिघाय मारम् ॥४॥कामो वसन्तमलयानिलबन्धुशाली कान्ताकटाक्षविशिखैर्विकसद्विलासै: । विध्यन्मुहुर्मुहुरकम्पमुदीक्ष्य च त्वां भीरुस्त्वयाऽथ जगदे मृदुहासभाजा ॥५॥भीत्याऽलमङ्गज वसन्त सुराङ्गना वो मन्मानसं त्विह जुषध्वमिति ब्रुवाण: । त्वं विस्मयेन परित: स्तुवतामथैषां प्रादर्शय: स्वपरिचारककातराक्षी: ॥६॥सम्मोहनाय मिलिता मदनादयस्ते त्वद्दासिकापरिमलै: किल मोहमापु: । दत्तां त्वया च जगृहुस्त्रपयैव सर्व- स्वर्वासिगर्वशमनीं पुनरुर्वशीं ताम् ॥७॥दृष्ट्वोर्वशीं तव कथां च निशम्य शक्र: पर्याकुलोऽजनि भवन्महिमावमर्शात् । एवं प्रशान्तरमणीयतरावतारा- त्त्वत्तोऽधिको वरद कृष्णतनुस्त्वमेव ॥८॥दक्षस्तु धातुरतिलालनया रजोऽन्धो नात्यादृतस्त्वयि च कष्टमशान्तिरासीत् । येन व्यरुन्ध स भवत्तनुमेव शर्वं यज्ञे च वैरपिशुने स्वसुतां व्यमानीत् ॥९॥क्रुद्धेशमर्दितमख: स तु कृत्तशीर्षो देवप्रसादितहरादथ लब्धजीव: । त्वत्पूरितक्रतुवर: पुनराप शान्तिं स त्वं प्रशान्तिकर पाहि मरुत्पुरेश ॥१०॥

क्रुद्धेशमर्दितमख: स तु कृत्तशीर्षो देवप्रसादितहरादथ लब्धजीव: । त्वत्पूरितक्रतुवर: पुनराप शान्तिं स त्वं प्रशान्तिकर पाहि मरुत्पुरेश ॥१०॥Kruddheśamarditamakhaḥ sa tu kṛttaśīrṣo Devaprasāditaharād atha labdhajīvaḥ । Tvatpūritakratuvaraḥ punar āpa śāntiṁ Sa tvaṁ praśāntikara pāhi marutpureśa ॥10॥ க்ருத்தேஸமர்திதமக: ஸ து க்ருத்தஶீர்ஷோ தேவப்ரசாதிதஹராதத லப்தஜீவ: । த்வத்பூரிதக்ரதுவர: புனராப ஸாந்திம் ஸ த்வம் ப்ரஷாந்திகர பாஹி மருத்புரேஶ ॥10॥क्रुद्ध-ईश-मर्दित-मख:enraged, Shiva disrupted the Yanjyaस तु कृत्त-शीर्ष:and that Daksha was beheadedदेव-प्रसादित-हरात्-अथfrom Shiva who was propitiated by the gods, then,लब्ध-जीव:was restored to lifeत्वत्-पूरित-क्रतुवर:whose Yanjya was completed by Thy graceपुन:-आप शान्तिं(he) regained peace of mindस त्वं प्रशान्तिकरThat Thou O Bestower of calmness!पाहि मरुत्पुरेशprotect O Lord of Guruvaayur!Enraged, Shiva disrupted the sacrifice of Daksha and also cut off his head. However on being propitiated by the gods, Shiva restored Daksha to life again. His sacrifice was then completed by Thy grace, and he also achieved mental peace. O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Bestower of calmness! deign to protect me.

दक्षस्तु धातुरतिलालनया रजोऽन्धो नात्यादृतस्त्वयि च कष्टमशान्तिरासीत् । येन व्यरुन्ध स भवत्तनुमेव शर्वं यज्ञे च वैरपिशुने स्वसुतां व्यमानीत् ॥९॥Dakṣastu dhāturatilālanayā rajo'ndho Nātyādṛtas tvayi ca kaṣṭam aśāntir āsīt । Yena vyarundha sa bhavantanum eva śarvaṁ Yajñe ca vairapiśune svasutāṁ vyamānīt ॥9॥ தக்ஷஸ்து தாதுரதிலாலநயா ரஜோ'ந்தோ நாத்யாத்ருதஸ்த்வயி ச கஷ்டமஸாந்திராசீத் । யேந வ்யருந்த ஸ பவந்தநுமேவ ஸர்வம் யஜ்ஞே ச வைரபிஷுநே ஸ்வஸுதாம் வ்யமாநீத் ॥9॥ दक्ष:-तुDaksha, indeedधातु:-अति-लालनयाdue to excessive indulgence shown by Brahmaaरज:-अन्ध:blinded by Rajoguna (haughtiness)न-अति-आदृत:-त्वयिwithout much respect for Theeच कष्टम्-and Alas!अशान्ति:-आसीत्was unpeaceful in mindयेन व्यरुन्ध सbecause of that he became antagonistic toभवत्-तनुम्-एव शर्वंShiva who is a form of Thee aloneयज्ञे च वैर-पिशुनेand during the Yanjya which he did to show his enmity to Shivaस्व-सुताम् व्यमानीत्insulted his own daughterOwing to the extreme indulgence given to him by Brahmaa, Daksha was blinded with haughtiness and overpowered by Rajoguna. Alas! He had no respect for Thee and had lost his mental calmness. So he became antagonistic to Shiva who is Thee alone in another form. He performed a sacrifice to show his enmity towards Shiva and also slighted his own daughter Sati.

दृष्ट्वोर्वशीं तव कथां च निशम्य शक्र: पर्याकुलोऽजनि भवन्महिमावमर्शात् । एवं प्रशान्तरमणीयतरावतारा- त्त्वत्तोऽधिको वरद कृष्णतनुस्त्वमेव ॥८॥Dṛṣṭv orvaśīṁ tava kathāṁ ca niśamya śakraḥ Paryākulo'jani bhavanmahimāvarmārśāt । Evaṁ praśāntaramaṇīyatarāvatārāt Tvattodhibaro varada kṛṣṇatanus tvameva ॥8॥ த்ருஷ்ட்வோர்வஷீம் தவ கதாம் ச நிஷம்ய சக்ர: பர்யாகுலோ'ஜநி பவன்மஹிமாவமர்ஷாத் । ஏவம் ப்ரஷாந்தரமணீயதராவதாராத் த்வத்தோதிகரோ வரத க்ருஷ்ணதநுஸ்த்வமேவ ॥8॥ दृष्ट्वा-उर्वशींon seeing Urvasheeतव कथां च निशम्यand hearing Thy storyशक्र:Indraपर्याकुल:-अजनिbecame perplexedभवत्-महिमा-अवमर्शात्on realising Thy gloryएवंin this mannerप्रशान्त-रमणीयतर-अवतारात्gentle and so beautiful than this incarnation (avataara)त्त्वत्त:-of Theeअधिक:greater (surpassing)वरदO Bestower of boons!कृष्णतनु:-त्वम्-एवis Thy incarnation as Krishna, onlySeeing Urvashi and hearing about Thy achievements, Indra was perplexed, and thus realized Thy glory. O Bestower of Boons! This incarnation of Thee as Nara Naaraayana which is so gentle and beautiful, is excelled only by Thy incarnation as Krishna.

सम्मोहनाय मिलिता मदनादयस्ते त्वद्दासिकापरिमलै: किल मोहमापु: । दत्तां त्वया च जगृहुस्त्रपयैव सर्व- स्वर्वासिगर्वशमनीं पुनरुर्वशीं ताम् ॥७॥Sammohanāya militā madanādayas te Tvaddāsikāparimalaiḥ kila moham āpuḥ । Dattāṁ tvayā ca jagṛhus trapayāiva sarva- Swarvāsigarvaśamanīṁ punar urvaśīṁ tām ॥7॥ ஸம்மோஹநாய மிலிதா மதநாதயஸ் தே த்வத்தாஸிகாபரிமலை: கில மோஹமாபு: । தத்தாம் த்வயா ச ஜக்ருஹுஸ் த்ரபயைவ ஸர்வ- ஸ்வர்வாஸிகர்வஸமநீம் புனருர்வஷீம் தாம் ॥7॥ सम्मोहनायto enchant (Thee)मिलिता मदन-आदय:-Cupid and others who had assembledतेTheeत्वत्-दासिका-परिमलै:by the fragrance of Thy handmaidsकिल मोहम्-आपु:indeed were enchantedदत्तां त्वया चand given by Theeजगृहु:-त्रपया-एवaccepted (Urvashi) with shame indeedसर्व-स्वर्वासि-गर्व-शमनींwho humbled the pride of all celestial damselsपुन:-उर्वशीं ताम्again that UrvashiKaamadeva (Cupid) and others who had come to overpower Thee, were themselves captivated by Thy handmaids' fragrance.Then, they, feeling ashamed, accepted Urvashi, who was given by Thee and who humbled the pride of all the celestial damsels.

भीत्याऽलमङ्गज वसन्त सुराङ्गना वो मन्मानसं त्विह जुषध्वमिति ब्रुवाण: । त्वं विस्मयेन परित: स्तुवतामथैषां प्रादर्शय: स्वपरिचारककातराक्षी: ॥६॥Bhītyā'lam aṅgaja vasanta surāṅganā vo Manmānasaṁ tviha juṣadhvam iti bruvāṇaḥ । Tvaṁ vismayena paritaḥ stuvatām athaiṣāṁ Prādarśayaḥ svaparicārakakātarākṣīḥ ॥6॥ பீத்யா'லமங்கஜ வசந்த ஸுராங்கநா வோ மன்மானஸம் த்விஹ ஜுஷத்வமிதி ப்ருவாண: । த்வம் விஸ்மயேன பரித: ஸ்துவதாம் அதைஷாம் ப்ராதர்ஶய: ஸ்வபரிச்சாரககாதராக்ஷீ: ॥6॥भीत्या-अलम्-do not fearअङ्गज वसन्त सुराङ्गना व:you (all) Cupid, Spring, damselsमत्-मानसम् तु-इहhere, however, (you all) product of my mindजुषध्वम्-enjoyइति ब्रुवाण:thus sayingत्वंThou (showed)विस्मयेन परित:(who were) surrounded by wonder (wonder-struck)स्तुवताम्-अथ-ऐषाम्who were praising Thee, then to themप्रादर्शय:(Thou) showedस्वपरिचारक-कातराक्षी:the beautiful damsels attending on TheeThou told Cupid and others who were standing around Thee struck with wonder, and praising Thee -" O Kaamdeva, Spring and damsels! Do not fear. Look at these products of my mind." So saying Thou revealed to them the beautiful handmaids attending on Thee.

कामो वसन्तमलयानिलबन्धुशाली कान्ताकटाक्षविशिखैर्विकसद्विलासै: । विध्यन्मुहुर्मुहुरकम्पमुदीक्ष्य च त्वां भीरुस्त्वयाऽथ जगदे मृदुहासभाजा ॥५॥Kāmo vasantamalayānila-bandhuśālī Kāntākaṭākṣaviśikhairvikasadvilāsaiḥ । Vidhyan muhurmuhurakampamudīkṣya ca tvāṁ Bhīrus tvayā'tha jagade mṛduhāsabhājā ॥5॥ காமோ வசந்தமலயானில-பந்துஷாலீ காந்தாகடாக்ஷவிஷிகைர்விகஸத்விலாஸை: । வித்யந்முஹுர்முஹுரகம்பமுதீக்ஷ்ய ச த்வாம் பீருஸ்த்வயா'த ஜகதே ம்ருதுஹாஸபாஜா ॥5॥ काम:Cupidवसन्त-मलय-अनिलwith Vasant (spring) and Malaya breezeबन्धुशालीas his friends (associates)कान्ता-कटाक्ष-विशिखै:-with the arrows in the sidelong glances of the damselsविकसत्-विलासै:and amorous movementsविध्यन्-मुहु:-मुहु:-piercing again and againअकम्पम्-उदीक्ष्य च त्वाम्and seeing Thee unwaveredभीरु:-(were) frightenedत्वया-अथ जगदेthen, were told by Theeमृदु-हास-भाजा(Thee) who were smilingCupid accompanied by spring season and the Malaya breeze, tried to attack Thee many times by the arrows consisting of the damsels' sidelong glances and their amorous movements. Finding Thee unaffected, they were frightened. Thou then smilingly spoke to them.

अन्वाचरन्नुपदिशन्नपि मोक्षधर्मं त्वं भ्रातृमान् बदरिकाश्रममध्यवात्सी: । शक्रोऽथ ते शमतपोबलनिस्सहात्मा दिव्याङ्गनापरिवृतं प्रजिघाय मारम् ॥४॥Anvācarannupadiśannapi mokṣadharmaṁ Tvaṁ bhrātṛmān badarikāśramamadhyavātsīḥ । Śakro'tha te śamatapobalanissahātmā Divyāṅganāparivṛtaṁ prajighāya māram ॥4॥ அன்வாசரந்நுபதிஷந்நபி மோக்ஷதர்மம் த்வம் ப்ராத்ருமாந் பதரிகாஶ்ரமமத்யவாத்ஸீ: । சக்ரோ'த தே ஸமதபோபலநிஸ்ஸஹாத்மா திவ்யாங்கநாபரிவ்ருதம் ப்ரஜிகாய மாரம் ॥4॥ अन्वाचरन्-practicingउपदिशन्-अपिand also preachingमोक्ष-धर्मम्the path of liberationत्वं भ्रातृमान्Thou along with Thy brother (Nara)बदरिकाश्रमम्-अध्यवात्सी:dwelt in Badarikaashramaशक्र:-अथIndra thenते शम-तप:-बल-निस्सह-आत्माunable to bear because of jealousy Thy prowess acquired by discipline and penanceदिव्याङ्गना-परिवृतम्surrounded by celestial beautiesप्रजिघायsentमारम्cupidPracticing and teaching the path of disciplines, leading to liberation, Thou with Nara Thy brother, dwelt in Badarikaashrama. Indra who was jealous of Thy spiritual powers, which Thou had acquired by penance and discipline, sent cupid along with celestial beauties to disturb Thee.

दैत्यं सहस्रकवचं कवचै: परीतं साहस्रवत्सरतपस्समराभिलव्यै: । पर्यायनिर्मिततपस्समरौ भवन्तौ शिष्टैककङ्कटममुं न्यहतां सलीलम् ॥३॥Daityaṁ sahasrakavacaṁ kavacaiḥ parītaṁ Sāhasravatsaratapas-samarābhilavyaiḥ । Paryāyanirmitatapas-samarau bhavantau Śiṣṭaikakaṅkaṭam amuṁ nyahatāṁ salīlam ॥3॥ தைத்யம் ஸஹஸ்ரகவசம் கவசை: பரீதம் ஸாஹஸ்ரவத்ஸரதபஸ்-ஸமராபிலவ்யை: । பர்யாயநிர்மிததபஸ்-ஸமரௌ பவந்தௌ சிஷ்டைககங்கடமமும் ந்யஹதாம் ஸலீலம் ॥3॥दैत्यम्the Asuraसहस्र-कवचम् कवचै: परीतम्known as Sahasrakavacha, who was covered by a thousand coat of armsसाहस्र-वत्सर-तप:-समर-अभिलव्यै:which could be pierced only by penance for one thousand years and fighting for the same durationपर्याय-निर्मित-तप:-समरौtaking turns in doing penance and fightingभवन्तौThou twoशिष्ट-ऐक-कङ्कटम्-अमुम्(one who was) left with only one coat of armour, this Asuraन्यहताम्killed effortlesslyसलीलम्as a sportThe Asura known as Sahasrakavacha, had one thousand coats of armour. One who did penance for a thousand years and also fought with the Asura for a thousand years, simultaneously, only could pierce the armors. Thou as Naaraayan along with Nara did the required in turns and all the coats of the Asura were destroyed but one remained. Then Thou killed him effortlessly, as a sport.

मूर्तिर्हि धर्मगृहिणी सुषुवे भवन्तं नारायणं नरसखं महितानुभावम् । यज्जन्मनि प्रमुदिता: कृततूर्यघोषा: पुष्पोत्करान् प्रववृषुर्नुनुवु: सुरौघा: ॥२॥Mūrtir hi dharmagṛhiṇī suṣuve bhavantaṁ Nārāyaṇaṁ narasakhaṁ mahitānubhāvam । Yajjanmani pramuditāḥ kṛtatūryaghoṣāḥ Puṣpotkarān pravavṛṣur nunuvuḥ suraughāḥ ॥2॥ மூர்திர்ஹி தர்மக்ருஹிணீ ஸுஷுவே பவந்தம் நாராயணம் நரஸக்ஹம் மஹிதானுபாவம் । யஜ்ஜன்மனி ப்ரமுதிதா: க்ருததூர்யகோஷா: புஷ்போத்த்கராந் ப்ரவவ்ருஷுர்நுநுவு: ஸுரௌகா: ॥2॥ मूर्ति:-हि धर्म-गृहिणीMurti the wife of Dharmadevaसुषुवे भवन्तं नारायणंgave birth to Thee as Naaraayanaनरसखं महित-अनुभावंalong with Nara of great gloryयत्-जन्मनिat whose birthप्रमुदिता:extremely delightedकृत-तूर्य-घोषा:sounding musical instrumentsपुष्प-उत्करान् प्रववृषु:-(and) showering heaps of celestial flowersनुनुवु: सुरौघा:that host of Devas sang hymns in Thy praiseMurti the wife of Dharmadeva gave birth to Thee as her most glorious son Naaraayana, along with Nara as inseparable companion. The gods in the heavens rejoiced at this birth, they sang hymns in Thy praise, in accompaniment of musical instruments, and showered heaps of flowers.

दक्षो विरिञ्चतनयोऽथ मनोस्तनूजां लब्ध्वा प्रसूतिमिह षोडश चाप कन्या: । धर्मे त्रयोदश ददौ पितृषु स्वधां च स्वाहां हविर्भुजि सतीं गिरिशे त्वदंशे ॥१॥Dakṣo viriñcatanayo'tha manostanūjāṁ Labdhvā prasūtim iha ṣoḍaśa cāpa kanyāḥ । Dharme trayodaśa dadau pitṛṣu svadhāṁ ca Svāhāṁ havirbhujī satīṁ giriśe tvadaṁśe ॥1॥தக்ஷோ விரிஞ்சதநயோ'த மனோஸ்தனூஜாம் லப்த்வா ப்ரஸூதிம் இஹ ஷோடச சாப கந்யா: । தர்மே த்ரயோதச ததௌ பித்ருஷு ஸ்வதாம் ச ஸ்வாஹாம் ஹவிர்புஜி ஸதீம் கிரிசே த்வதம்சே ॥1॥दक्ष: विरिञ्च-तनय: अथDaksha, the son of Brahmaa, thenमनो:-तनूजाम् लब्ध्वा प्रसूतिम्-getting Manu's daughter Prasooti, in marriageइहthrough herषोडश च-आप कन्या:begot sixteen daughtersधर्मे त्रयोदश ददौto Dharma he gave thirteenपितृषु स्वधां च(he gave) Swadhaa to the Pitrisस्वाहां हविर्भुजि(and) Swahaa to Agniसतीं गिरिशे त्वत्-अंशेSati (he gave to) Shiva, who is an aspect of ThyselfDaksha Prajaapati, the son of Brahmaa married Prasooti, the daughter of Manu and begot sixteen daughters off her. He gave thirteen of them to Dharmaa deva, Swadhaa to the Pitris, Swaahaa to Agni and Sati to Shiva who is an aspect of Thyself.

मतिरिह गुणसक्ता बन्धकृत्तेष्वसक्ता त्वमृतकृदुपरुन्धे भक्तियोगस्तु सक्तिम् । महदनुगमलभ्या भक्तिरेवात्र साध्या कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥१॥ प्रकृतिमहदहङ्काराश्च मात्राश्च भूता- न्यपि हृदपि दशाक्षी पूरुष: पञ्चविंश: । इति विदितविभागो मुच्यतेऽसौ प्रकृत्या कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥२॥प्रकृतिगतगुणौघैर्नाज्यते पूरुषोऽयं यदि तु सजति तस्यां तत् गुणास्तं भजेरन् । मदनुभजनतत्त्वालोचनै: साऽप्यपेयात् कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥३॥विमलमतिरुपात्तैरासनाद्यैर्मदङ्गं गरुडसमधिरूढं दिव्यभूषायुधाङ्कम् । रुचितुलिततमालं शीलयेतानुवेलं कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥४॥मम गुणगणलीलाकर्णनै: कीर्तनाद्यै- र्मयि सुरसरिदोघप्रख्यचित्तानुवृत्ति: । भवति परमभक्ति: सा हि मृत्योर्विजेत्री कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥५॥अहह बहुलहिंसासञ्चितार्थै: कुटुम्बं प्रतिदिनमनुपुष्णन् स्त्रीजितो बाललाली । विशति हि गृहसक्तो यातनां मय्यभक्त: कपिलतनुरितित्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥६॥युवतिजठरखिन्नो जातबोधोऽप्यकाण्डे प्रसवगलितबोध: पीडयोल्लङ्घ्य बाल्यम् । पुनरपि बत मुह्यत्येव तारुण्यकाले कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥७॥पितृसुरगणयाजी धार्मिको यो गृहस्थ: स च निपतति काले दक्षिणाध्वोपगामी । मयि निहितमकामं कर्म तूदक्पथार्थं कपिल्तनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥८॥इति सुविदितवेद्यां देव हे देवहूतिं कृतनुतिमनुगृह्य त्वं गतो योगिसङ्घै: । विमलमतिरथाऽसौ भक्तियोगेन मुक्ता त्वमपि जनहितार्थं वर्तसे प्रागुदीच्याम् ॥९॥परम किमु बहूक्त्या त्वत्पदाम्भोजभक्तिं सकलभयविनेत्रीं सर्वकामोपनेत्रीम् । वदसि खलु दृढं त्वं तद्विधूयामयान् मे गुरुपवनपुरेश त्वय्युपाधत्स्व भक्तिम् ॥१०॥English TransliterationVerse 1: Matir iha guṇasaktā bandhakṛtteṣv asaktā Tvamṛtakṛd uparundhe bhaktiyogas tu saktim । Mahadanugamalabhyā bhaktir evātra sādhya Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 2: Prakṛtimahadahaṅkārāś ca mātrāś ca bhūtā- Ny api hṛd api daśākṣī pūruṣaḥ pañcaviṁśaḥ । Iti viditavibhāgo mucyate’sau prakṛtyā Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 3: Prakṛtigataguṇaughair nājyate pūruṣo’yaṁ Yadi tu sajati tasyāṁ tat guṇās taṁ bhajeran । Madanubhajanatattvālochanaḥ sā’py apeyāt Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 4: Vimalamatir upāttair āsanādyair madaṅgaṁ Garudasamadhirūḍhaṁ divyabhūṣāyudhāṅkam । Ruchitulitatamālaṁ śīlayetānuvelaṁ Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 5:Mama guṇagaṇalīlākarṇanaiḥ kīrtanādyaiḥ Mayi surasaridogha-prakhya-chittānuvṛttiḥ । Bhavati paramabhaktiḥ sā hi mṛtyor vijetrī Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 6:Ahaha bahulahinsā sañcitārthaiḥ kuṭumbaṁ Pratidinam anupuṣṇan strījito bālalālī । Viśati hi gṛhasakto yātanāṁ mayyabhaktaḥ Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 7:Yuvatijaṭhara-khinno jātabodho’py akāṇḍe Prasavagalitabodhaḥ pīḍayollanghya bālyam । Punar api bata muhyaty eva tāruṇyakāle Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 8:Pitṛsuragaṇayājī dhārmiko yo gṛhasthaḥ Sa ca nipatati kāle dakṣiṇādhvopagāmī । Mayi nihitam akāmaṁ karma tūdakpathārtham Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥Verse 9:Iti suviditavedyāṁ deva he Devahūtim Kṛtanutim anugṛhya tvaṁ gato yogisaṅghaiḥ । Vimalamatir athāsau bhaktiyogena muktā Tvam api janahitārthaṁ vartase prāgudīcyām ॥Verse 10:Parama kimu bahūktyā tvatpadāmbhoja bhaktiṁ Sakalabhayavinetrīṁ sarvakāmopanetṛīm । Vadasi khalu dṛḍhaṁ tvaṁ tad vidhūyāmayān me Gurupavanapureśa tvayy upādhatṣva bhaktim ॥

परम किमु बहूक्त्या त्वत्पदाम्भोजभक्तिं सकलभयविनेत्रीं सर्वकामोपनेत्रीम् । वदसि खलु दृढं त्वं तद्विधूयामयान् मे गुरुपवनपुरेश त्वय्युपाधत्स्व भक्तिम् ॥१०॥Verse 10:பரம கிமு பஹூக்த்யா த்வத்பதாம்போஜபக்திம் ஸகலபயவிநேத்ரீம் ஸர்வகாமோபநேத்ரீம் । வதஸி கலு த்ருதம் த்வம் தத்விதூயாமயான் மே குருபவனபுரேச த்வய்யுபாதத்ஸ்வ பக்திம் ॥Verse 10:Parama kimu bahūktyā tvatpadāmbhoja bhaktiṁ Sakalabhayavinetrīṁ sarvakāmopanetṛīm । Vadasi khalu dṛḍhaṁ tvaṁ tad vidhūyāmayān me Gurupavanapureśa tvayy upādhatṣva bhaktim ॥परमO Supreme Lord!किमु बहूक्त्याwhat more to sayत्वत्-पद्-अम्भोज-भक्तिंdevotion to Thy lotus feetसकल-भय-विनेत्रीम्removes all fearsसर्व-काम-उपनेत्रीम्and fulfills all desiresवदसि खलु दृढं त्वंThou (Thyself) do firmly declare indeedतत्-विधूय-आमयान् मेtherefore eradicating my ailmentsगुरुपवनपुरेशO Lord of Guruvaayur!त्वयि-उपाधत्स्व भक्तिम्endow me with devotion to TheeO Supreme Lord! What more do I say? Thou have firmly declared that devotion to Thy lotus feet removes all fears and fulfills all desires. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Therefore, eradicating all my ailments, endow me with devotion to Thee.

इति सुविदितवेद्यां देव हे देवहूतिं कृतनुतिमनुगृह्य त्वं गतो योगिसङ्घै: । विमलमतिरथाऽसौ भक्तियोगेन मुक्ता त्वमपि जनहितार्थं वर्तसे प्रागुदीच्याम् ॥९॥Verse 9:இதிசு விதிதவேத்யாம் தேவ ஹே தேவஹூதிம் க்ருதநுதிமனுக்ருஹ்ய த்வம் கதோ யோகிசங்கை: । விமலமதிரதாஸௌ பக்தியோகேன முக்தா த்வமபி ஜனஹிதார்த்தம் வர்தஸே ப்ராகுதீச்யாம் ॥Verse 9:Iti suviditavedyāṁ deva he Devahūtim Kṛtanutim anugṛhya tvaṁ gato yogisaṅghaiḥ । Vimalamatir athāsau bhaktiyogena muktā Tvam api janahitārthaṁ vartase prāgudīcyām ॥इति सुविदित-वेद्यांthus who had known well what is to be knownदेव हेO Lord!देवहूतिं कृतनुतिम्-to Devahooti who was praising Theeअनुगृह्य त्वं गत:having blessed, Thou departedयोगि-सङ्घै:along with a group of Yogisविमल-मति:-अथ-असौshe (Devahooti) who had become pure in mindभक्ति-योगेन मुक्ताwas liberated by the path of devotionत्वम्-अपि जन-हित-अर्थम्Thou also for the good of the peopleवर्तसेdo stayप्राक्-उदीच्याम्in the North EastO Lord! Having thus known all that was to be known, Thou blessed Devahooti, who was singing Thy praise. She had attained the purity of mind and was liberated by following the path of devotion. Thou also left with a group of ascetics and Thou do stay even now, in the North East for the good of the people.

पितृसुरगणयाजी धार्मिको यो गृहस्थ: स च निपतति काले दक्षिणाध्वोपगामी । मयि निहितमकामं कर्म तूदक्पथार्थं कपिल्तनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥८॥Verse 8:பித்ருஸுரகணயாஜீ தர்மிகோ யோ க்ருஹஸ்த: ஸ ச நிபததி காலே தக்ஷிணாத்வோபகாமீ । மயி நிஹிதமகாமம் கர்ம தூதக்பதார்த்தம் கபிலதனுரிதி த்வம் தேவஹூத்யை ந்யகாதீ: ॥Verse 8:Pitṛsuragaṇayājī dhārmiko yo gṛhasthaḥ Sa ca nipatati kāle dakṣiṇādhvopagāmī । Mayi nihitam akāmaṁ karma tūdakpathārtham Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥पितृ-सुर-गण-याजीone who performs sacrifices to ancestors and godsधार्मिक: य: गृहस्थ:a householder who performs righteous deedsस च निपतति कालेand he comes back (to this earth) in due courseदक्षिण-अध्व-उपगामीgoing (led by) the Southern pathमयि निहितम्-dedicated to Meअकामं कर्म तु-(doing) desireless actions, howeverउदक्-पथार्थंis led by the Northern pathकपिल्-तनु:-इति त्वंa human descent as Kapila, Thou ,thusदेवहूत्यै न्यगादी:instructed DevahootiA virtuous householder who makes sacrificial offerings to forefathers (Pitris) and gods (Devas), goes by the Southern path after death, and is born again when he has enjoyed the fruits of his meritorious deeds.Those who live by performing desireless actions as offerings to Me, go by the Northern path, after death. Thus Thou instructed Devahooti, incarnate as Kapila.

युवतिजठरखिन्नो जातबोधोऽप्यकाण्डे प्रसवगलितबोध: पीडयोल्लङ्घ्य बाल्यम् । पुनरपि बत मुह्यत्येव तारुण्यकाले कपिलतनुरिति त्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥७॥Verse 7:யுவதிஜடகர்ஹின்னோ ஜாதபோதோ’ப்யகாண்டே ப்ரஸவகலிதபோத: பீடயொல்லங்க்ய பால்யம் । புனரபி பத முஹ்யத்யேவ தாருண்யகாலே கபிலதனுரிதி த்வம் தேவஹூத்யை ந்யகாதீ: ॥Verse 7:Yuvatijaṭhara-khinno jātabodho’py akāṇḍe Prasavagalitabodhaḥ pīḍayollanghya bālyam । Punar api bata muhyaty eva tāruṇyakāle Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥युवति-जठर-खिन्न:suffering in the womb of a young woman (mother)जात-बोध:-अपि-अकाण्डेeven though suddenly getting the knowledge of Realityप्रसव-गलित-बोध:losing that knowledge immediately on birthपीडया-उल्लङ्घ्य बाल्यंspending childhood afflicted with ailmentsपुन:-अपि बत मुह्यति-एवagain is infatuated alas!तारुण्य-कालेduring youthकपिल-तनु:-इति त्वंa human descent as Kapil, Thouदेवहूत्यै न्यगादी:instructed DevahootiRepeatedly entering the womb for rebirth, the Jiva though retains the memory of the Supreme Reality, he loses it during the travails of birth. After going through various sufferings of childhood, he enters the stage of youth, when he once again is overcome by the infatuation of sense life. Thus, Thou incarnate as Kapil, instructed Devahooti.

अहह बहुलहिंसासञ्चितार्थै: कुटुम्बं प्रतिदिनमनुपुष्णन् स्त्रीजितो बाललाली । विशति हि गृहसक्तो यातनां मय्यभक्त: कपिलतनुरितित्वं देवहूत्यै न्यगादी: ॥६॥Verse 6:அஹஹ பஹுலஹிம்ஸாஸஞ்சிதார்த்தை: குடும்பம் ப்ரதிநினமனுபுஷ்ணந் ஸ்த்ரீஜிதோ பாலலாலீ । விசதி ஹி க்ருஹஸக்தோ யாதநாம் மய்யபக்த: கபிலதனுரிதித்வம் தேவஹூத்யை ந்யகாதீ: ॥Verse 6:Ahaha bahulahinsā sañcitārthaiḥ kuṭumbaṁ Pratidinam anupuṣṇan strījito bālalālī । Viśati hi gṛhasakto yātanāṁ mayyabhaktaḥ Kapilatanur iti tvaṁ Devahūtyai nyagādīḥ ॥अहहAlas!बहुल-हिंसा-सञ्चित-अर्थै:with wealth earned by many cruel and unfair meansकुटुम्बंones familyप्रतिदिनम्-अनुपुष्णन्everyday feedingस्त्रीजित:controlled over by wifeबाललालीfondly loving the childrenविशति हिattains indeedगृहसक्त:intensely attached to his houseयातनांsufferings (of hell)मयि-अभक्त:one who is not devoted to Meकपिल्-तनु:-इति त्वंa human descent as Kapil, Thouदेवहूत्यै न्यगादी:instructed DevahootiAlas! Men acquire wealth by unfair and cruel means for the support of their own families and are in subservience to women's charms and love of children. Being devoid of devotion to Me, intensely attached to the worldly possessions, they are led to the sufferings of hell. Thus, Thou instructed Devahooti, as Kapil incarnate.
