Juliet Cowan is an actor and comedian who is returning to Edinburgh 25 years after beating Jimmy Carr, Russell Howard and Andy Zaltzman in the '99 final of So You Think You're Funny?. As an actor she recently played Amy Winehouse’s mum in the biographical film, Back to Black. She guest-starred in over 20 episodes of The Bill and starred in "The Wench Is Dead", the penultimate episode of the Inspector Morse series. Reginald D. Hunter is a comedian who’s TV appearances have included Never Mind The Buzzcocks, 8 out of 10 Cats, Live at the Apollo, QI and Have I Got News For You? He also filmed two series of the BBC2’s hugely popular Reginald D Hunter’s Songs Of The South & Songs of The Border, documenting his epic road trip through 150 years of American popular song.He reached the final of So You Think You Are Funny in 1998 during his first visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and was nominated for The Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer in 2002 for his debut full-length show I Am What I Am. Continuing our Edinburgh Month... Canadian comedian Michelle Shaughnessy fast made a name for herself across North America. She’s had numerous appearances on television and her debut album “You Know What You Did” hit number one on the iTunes comedy charts. Her sophomore album “Botoxic” received a coveted 5 star review from Toronto’s NOW Magazine. In 2017 she was a finalist in Canada’s “Top Comic” competition and her audition video has since gone viral, with 5 million views and climbing. Garrett Millerick’s breakout television performance was on the hit US late-night talk show Conan. His live show Sunflower became one of the best reviewed and most talked about shows of 2018, both at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and subsequently at London’s Soho Theatre. The show was Time Out London’s No.1 Comedy Pick and saw Garrett receive a nomination for ‘Breakthrough Act’ at the 2019 Chortle Awards. Steve Bugeja is one of the circuit’s most exciting comedians. Steve hosted the BBC Radio 4 series Economics with Subtitles and has made numerous appearances on TV shows including The Russell Howard Hour (Sky One), Love Island: Aftersun (ITV2), Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central (Comedy Central) and Zoe Ball on Saturday (ITV1). Steve is the co-creator and star of ITV2’s hit sitcom Buffering in which he plays the role of Finn. Steve as well as co-writing every episode was also the associate producer for series 2. As seen on BBC’s Live at the Apollo, Spring Day is an American stand-up comedian, writer and actor living in London. Spring’s uniquely acerbic and sassy style of comedy is always a crowd pleaser, or shocker... A fluent Japanese speaker and a mild cerebral palsy haver, Spring began her career headlining at the Tokyo Comedy Store whilst based in Japan. Kim Leadbeater MBE has been a Labour MP since 2021. She is MP for Batley and Spen which is where her sister, Jo Cox, also sat until her tragic murder in June 2016. As of June 2023 she is chair of the all-party parliamentary groups on Sport and Tidy Britain, co-chair of the groups on Political Literacy and on Tackling Loneliness and Connected Communities. In 2020, she was appointed President of West Yorkshire Scouts. In 2018, Kim was awarded the UK's one thousandth Points of Light award by Prime Minister Theresa May for having "rejected the hate that marked her sister's murder to continue Jo's work and ensure that Jo's determination to change the world has lived on." In the 2021 New Year Honours, Kim was appointed MBE and The Spectator named her as 2021's "Newcomer of the Year". Toby Hadoke is an actor, writer, podcaster and award winning comedian. He is the host of a weekly comedy night in Manchester at XS Malarkey Comedy Club and presents a monthly new material night at the 53Two theatre with comedians such as Sarah Millican, Justin Moorhouse, and Gary Delaney. Paul Hendy is a script-writer, novelist, director, producer and filmmaker. In his early career, he was a TV presenter hosting the BAFTA nominated Dear Mr Barker, Don’t Try This at Home with Davina McCall, The Disney Club and Wheel of Fortune. He was a regular reporter on ITV’s This Morning and hosted ‘Stash the Cash’. In 2017 Paul wrote, produced and directed a short film The Last Laugh which sees three legendary British comedians in a dressing room discussing the secret of comedy and what it means to be funny. It won 'Best Film' at Manchester Film Festival, 'Special Audience Award' at Oxford Film Festival and 'Best Comedy Drama' at The Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. Paul has adapted The Last Laugh into a play which will debut at The Edinburgh Festival 24. In 2005, Paul set up Evolution Productions with his wife, Emily Wood. Georgina Hayden is a cook, food writer and stylist. Probably best known for playing Helen Herriot in the television adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, which led to her receiving the Variety Club Television Personality of the Year award in 1985. She was a member of the National Theatre Company under the leadership of Laurence Olivier and won a Critics' Circle Best Screen Actress award for her role in the feature film Father. Astrophysicist Professor Chris Lintott is the primary presenter of the BBC’s The Sky at Night, having previously been co-presenter with Patrick Moore until Moore's death in 2012. He co-authored Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe and The Cosmic Tourist with Patrick Moore and Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May. He has recently been appointed the 39th Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College in London which was founded in 1597. At the same time Chris is Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford and a Research Fellow at New College. Nick Newman is Ian Hislop’s writing partner and the award winning Sunday Times cartoonist. He has worked for Private Eye since 1981 and has been the cartoonist for The Sunday Times since 1989. He was The Cartoon Art Trust’s Cartoonist of the Year in 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2016 and he won the Sports Journalists’ Association’s Cartoonist of the Year award in 2005, 2007 and 2009. Nick’s scriptwriting career with Ian Hislop includes Spitting Image (from 1984-89), Dawn French’s Murder Most Horrid, The Harry Enfield Show (with the creation of Tim Nice-But-Dim), the BBC1 film Gobble and the sitcom My Dad’s the Prime Minister. In 2008 their film A Bunch of Amateurs starring Burt Reynolds was chosen for the Royal Film Performance, before being adapted for the stage. Maisie Adam is comedian who is fast becoming a household name who has appeared on Live At The Apollo, A League Of Their Own, Mock the Week, Have I Got News for You, QI, Roast Battle, 8 Out of 10 Cats and the Royal Variety Performance. Since winning the nationwide So You Think You’re Funny? competition in 2017, she has won Best New Act at the Chortle Awards and the Amused Moose National New Act gong, as well as being nominated Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe for her debut show ‘Vague’. Tom Shakespeare CBE is Professor of Disability Research at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and was the 2020 Swarthmore Lecturer. Tom has achondroplasia and uses a wheelchair. He is a social scientist and bioethicist who has worked particularly on disability and on genetics. His books include Disability Rights and Wrongs, Genetic Politics, and Disability – the Basics. Tom has presented programmes and documentaries on BBC Radio and has written for publications including The Guardian and The Lancet, alongside talking to academic, professional and lay audiences around the world. In July 2018 Shakespeare was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. He has been a stand-up comedian, an actor, a dancer, and an artist. Professor Sophie Scott is a neuroscientist and the Director of the Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience. Her research investigates the cognitive neuroscience of voices, speech and laughter, particularly speech perception, production, vocal emotions and human communication Sophie started her research career in Cambridge at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit She was awarded a Wellcome Trust Fellowship in 2001 and has been funded by them since. As of 2017 she holds a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellowship. She is a member of the British Psychological Society, the Society for Neuroscience, the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, and the Experimental Psychology Society. She’s a Fellow of the British Academy. Sophie is known for her public engagement work, including performing standup comedy. She’s been a panel guest several times on BBC Radio 4 programme The Infinite Monkey Cage and appeared on the BBC TV series Horizon, The Science of Laughter with Jimmy Carr. Sophie presented the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures in 2017 entitled The Language of Life which explored the topic of communication.
