S1 Ep 3838. A loaded question with a liberating answer

Key Points:In this episode, I pose a confronting question: "Who in your life sees, loves, and witnesses you unconditionally just as you are?"When asked in my community, answers varied (children, aunts, sisters, a couple partners) - but notably, no one mentioned their mothersI share my personal answer to this question and how it’s lead to a liberational path forwardUnderstanding that we often unconsciously seek in our partners what we didn't receive from our primary caregiversWhen we become our own source of unconditional love, it transforms all our relationshipsQuotes from the Episode:"When we can stop expecting someone else to be this presence for us and we turn towards ourselves to become this witness and this unconditional love... we can release the burden that we put on others unconsciously.""It takes one person in a relationship to change the dance.""Your love for yourself gets to be the bigger energy."Announcements:Enrollment for Flourish and Write will be closing at the end of the monthI'll be working with my community on writing a book togetherLet's Connect:I'd love to hear how this episode resonates with you! S1 Ep 3131. What do I actually need?

In this episode, I explore the common (and often daunting) question that many mothers ask: "What do I actually need?" This question seems to come more from a place of overwhelm, resentment, or struggle, versus one of curiosity and hopefulness.I share part of my personal health journey, including dealing with bunions that affected my knee health and gut issues that came with a side of an autoimmune condition. Through these experiences, I discovered the importance of looking beyond symptoms to find the root causes of our struggles. We explore how getting to the root of our issues requires us to examine what's happening in our nervous systems. I discuss how 90-95% of our experience is driven by our subconscious, which has been programmed by our lineage, family upbringing, and larger systems like patriarchy, capitalism, and societal expectations. While we might need specific solutions like therapy, household help, or medical interventions, what we all need on some level is to understand what is happening in our bodies and learn how to regulate our nervous systems. When we tend to our dysregulated nervous systems at the root, the positive impact is significant.Resources Mentioned:The Mother Matrix - A series exploring the systems and programs that influence our lives, bodies, and nervous systems. S1 Ep 3030. Who's the inner work for?

Who benefits from the inner healing work we do? Who “should” we be doing it for? Particularly in the context of generational patterns and motherhood.Inspired by a spicy comment thread on an instagram post, I reflect on this question in this week’s podcast episode.I share a personal story about an ancestor session that transformed my understanding of generational healing and my purpose in The School of MOM. This spiritual experience helped me see that while it only takes one woman to unconsciously pass down trauma and unhelpful patterns through a lineage, it also only takes one woman to consciously heal and create new patterns for future generations. We discuss the common pushback against the "burden" of lineage healing and reframe it as an opportunity rather than an obligation. I emphasize that outcome and impact of doing inner work matters more than who you're doing it for - whether it's for yourself, your children, or your lineage. The key is approaching healing from a place of aligned choice rather than guilt or shame.I also reflect on moving away from labeling spiritual and intuitive practices as "woo-woo," which diminishes the power of feminine intuition and body wisdom. These experiences have consistently provided me with profound healing and direction, connecting me to something larger than myself.Resources Mentioned:The Mother Matrix series - A recently announced program focused on helping mothers connect to deeper meaning and purpose. S1 Ep 2929. What is the Point?

In this episode, I dive into the profound question, 'What is the point?' focusing specifically on why we should care about our relationships/healing our relationships with our bodies as women and mothers. This topic emerged from heartfelt conversations in our School of MOM community where so many of us struggle with developing and maintaining a healthy self-image and relationship with our bodies. I invite listeners to pause and reflect on their current relationship with their body and how that’s developed over time, as well as what they'd like it to be and what they want to model for their children. We explore the exhausting cycle of self-criticism that so many of us find ourselves in and why finding purpose beyond our physical appearance is so important for our well-being. I share insights about how shifting from criticism to compassion changes not just how we feel but ripples through all aspects of our lives. For those wanting support on this journey, I highlight resources including our FLOURISH program and Mother Matrix series, both designed to help you transform your relationship with yourself in a supportive community setting.Join The Mother Matrix in April! S1 Ep 2828. Introducing... The Mother Matrix

In this episode, I take a reflective walk to introduce a powerful new approach to understanding and healing what I've come to call the 'mother matrix.' This concept expands on the traditional 'mother wound' by exploring how deeply embedded patterns from our mothers and broader societal conditioning shape our behaviors, relationships, and self-perception.I share personal insights and experiences that have helped me recognize these influences in my own life. By examining collective patterns and cultural conditioning, I highlight the importance of both personal and community healing. The work of understanding and reshaping our 'mother matrix' empowers us to cultivate more conscious, intentional, and compassionate ways of being — not only for ourselves but also for future generations.I'm excited to introduce an upcoming two-part series designed to help you map and intentionally redesign your own 'mother matrix.' Through guided reflection, practical exercises, and supportive resources, this series offers a transformative path toward healing and growth. S1 Ep 2727. The Inner Work of Anti-Racism

In this episode, I discuss why anti-racism work is an essential part of our self-awareness journey and mindful motherhood practice.I explore how mindfulness gives us the capacity to examine unconscious biases in our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Drawing on insights from Rhonda Magee's work on the intersection of mindfulness and racial justice, I explain how mindfulness helps us develop the ability to stay present with difficult truths about ourselves and society.I share my personal commitment to ongoing anti-racism education within The School of MOM community, and why this work remains important despite current cultural pushback against DEI initiatives. This episode emphasizes how combining mindfulness and compassion creates a sustainable approach to anti-racism work, allowing us to respond more effectively when confronting uncomfortable realities.Resources Mentioned:Five-Day Anti-Racist Conversations Confidence Challenge: A free resource with our DEI coach Ashani Mfuko this month. S1 Ep 2626. Mindful Moment

In this episode, I explore the mindfulness concept that "you are exactly where you're meant to be." I delve into what this phrase truly means beyond just positive thinking, and how we can approach our present experience with genuine openness and curiosity. We explore the various reactions people might have to this statement - from eye-rolling skepticism to deep relief - and what these reactions tell us about our relationship with the present moment. I emphasize that accepting where we are isn't about wanting to stay there forever, but rather about creating the conditions for natural movement and growth through mindful awareness.I connect this concept to Rumi's famous poem "The Guest House," using it as a metaphor for how we can host all our experiences - thoughts, emotions, and circumstances - with greater presence and acceptance. The episode offers a gentle reminder about the transformative power of welcoming our experience exactly as it is.Resources Mentioned:Rumi's poem "The Guest House" - https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/guest-house/ This episode is perfect for anyone feeling resistant to their current circumstances or seeking a more mindful way to approach life's challenges. S1 Ep 2424. The Mother Wound

In this episode, I share a reflection inspired by a recent Healing Your Lineage call in our FLOURISH community on how the mother wound is playing out in real-time in my life.Key insights from this episode:The mother wound involves inherited beliefs and programming passed down through family lineages, influenced by cultural and societal patternsMy personal journey with people-pleasing and tendency to protect others' feelings stems from seeking unconditional love and acceptance that was unavailable in my relationship with my motherA pivotal moment in my healing came through exploring my birth stories and realizing how I held back from sharing positive experiences to protect othersThe importance of stepping into celebrating and embracing our lives without apology, while recognizing that others' reactions reflect their journey, not oursThis episode offers a raw look at how the mother wound can influence our behavior in subtle ways, even after significant healing work. S1 Ep 2222. Let's talk about $ and investing in ourselves

In this episode, I delve into the complex relationship between mothers, money, and self-investment, sharing insights inspired by my recent silent meditation retreat.I explore the concept of "Dana" (generosity) and how it connects to larger questions about how we value and invest in ourselves. I discuss the invisible barriers that often prevent women from investing in their personal growth and wellness, introducing the interconnected concepts of the "mother wound" and "money wound" - unconscious programming passed down through generations that influences how we view our own worth and what we feel entitled to invest in.I share my personal journey of transforming my relationship with self-investment, from only valuing visible, physical results to understanding the priceless nature of inner work. I explore how mindfulness practices have created profound shifts in various aspects of my life - from reducing my resting heart rate to healing my relationship with chronic pain and my body image.Through this discussion, I invite listeners to examine their own beliefs around self-investment and consider what might be holding them back from prioritizing their growth and wellbeing. I discuss:The reality of silent retreats versus the common perception of them being "nice and peaceful"How the first few days often involve "plotting your escape" before reaching a turning pointMy journey from being forced to attend my first retreat as part of a graduate certificate to voluntarily returning for moreThe experience of disconnecting from technology and the unexpected freedom that comes with itHow these retreats helped birth The School of MOM and deepened my understanding of mindfulness and self-compassionThe profound insights gained about mothering ourselves, especially for those without healthy mother modelsThe concept of fierce self-compassion versus tender self-compassion, and how retreats helped me discover and embody bothWhy longer, dedicated practice time creates deeper insights than short daily meditation sessionsThe importance of prioritizing ourselves, even (and especially) when it feels inconvenientA key takeaway: While shorter meditation sessions are valuable, extended periods of practice can provide a "full charge" to our system, creating lasting positive effects that ripple through our lives for months to come.I also share a lighthearted moment involving a cherry tomato incident in the silent dining hall, reminding us that even in serious practice, there's room for humor.Stay tuned for insights from this upcoming retreat in future episodes!Learn more/sign up for FLOURISH: https://theschoolofmom.com/flourish Thank you for tuning in to this episode of "Mothering Ourselves Mindfully." In this episode, I'm reflecting on a profound realization from my recent two-week break with family. Despite the usual chaos of family life - kids being kids, relationship dynamics, travel logistics, and even a COVID disruption - I experienced an unprecedented level of groundedness and ease in my body and nervous system.Key insights:A grounded nervous system becomes the thermostat that impacts those around you, rather than being a thermometer that simply reacts to others' statesThis inner work requires structure, accountability, and support - whether through meditation, community practice, or professional guidanceTechnology, particularly phone use, can be a major barrier to developing this dedicated practice of stillness and self-connectionJoin us this January for these opportunities to begin or deepen your practice:Decrease Your Phone Time Challenge (Starting January 17th) - sign up link coming soon! The MOM Pause (January 27th) - sign up hereFLOURISH Program: Special offer: 12 months for the price of 6 through 1/31/25 - learn more hereRemember: Your thriving in 2025 begins with saying yes to yourself and getting the support you need. S1 Ep 1818. Embracing YOUR timeline, not the calendar’s

In this episode, I explore a different approach to New Year's transitions and resolutions, particularly for mothers and women. We dive into why the traditional January 1st pressure might not serve us, and how we can align more naturally with cyclical rhythms. We explore how:The arbitrary nature of January 1st and why putting pressure on this specific date often sets us up for failureThe connection between women's bodies, moon cycles, and natural seasons (all following a 28-day/4-stage pattern)Why the winter solstice invites us into darkness and introspection, even as holiday festivities push us toward outward energyThe practical challenges of reflection and intention-setting during the holiday season as a motherHow we can use the Lunar New Year (late January) as a more aligned time for reflection and intention-settingI introduce the concept of cyclical living and offer alternative approaches to new year transitions that honor our natural rhythms and energy levels during this season.Resources Mentioned:Lunar New Year Gathering for The School of MOM community (coming January 2025). S1 Ep 1717. How do you actually set boundaries in this season and beyond?

In this episode, I explore the concept of mindful awareness during the holiday season and how to break free from unconscious patterns, particularly around boundaries and people-pleasing behaviors. We delve into why we often find ourselves repeating the same patterns year after year, especially during busy times like the holidays. I introduce the idea of treating this season as a "living, breathing meditation" and explain how making unconscious patterns conscious is the first step toward meaningful change.Key concepts covered:Understanding why 90-95% of our experience is driven by our subconscious and unconscious mindExploring how certain behaviors, even if they don't serve us, can feel "safe" to our nervous systemThe importance of looking beyond surface-level habit change to address deeper nervous system patternsWhy becoming the person who can hold boundaries is more important than just learning about boundariesHow sustainable change requires tending to our root-level patterns and giving ourselves time to grow, just like natureResources Mentioned:FLOURISH: A 12-month interactive program designed to help mothers create new cycles of being and doing for themselves and their lineage. S1 Ep 1616. The Key Ingredient in Your Parenting Success

In this episode, I share a powerful insight from the recent Mass Women's Conference, specifically focusing on a memorable quote from basketball star Caitlin Clark. While Oprah Winfrey's presence was remarkable, it was Clark's reflection about her mother that perfectly encapsulates what we teach at The School of MOM.We explore the profound truth behind Clark's words: "It wasn't anything that my mom said, it was just how she was." This statement highlights a fundamental principle in parenting - that our children remember not what we say, but how we make them feel, which is directly connected to how we feel ourselves.Key points discussed:The importance of embodiment over words in parentingHow our internal state affects our children through co-regulationWhy self-care and nervous system regulation are crucial parenting toolsThe connection between how we feel and how our children feelThe power of modeling over instructingResources Mentioned:FLOURISH: A 12-month interactive program designed to help mothers create new cycles of being and doing for themselves and their lineage. S1 Ep 1414. There is no "code to crack"

In this episode, I explore the powerful synchronicity between a full moon ceremony and an unexpected encounter with a dead crow, using these experiences to discuss letting go of unhelpful patterns - specifically the belief that there's always some "code to crack" in our lives. We delve into the exhausting cycle of constantly seeking the next solution, thinking, "if I just do XYZ, I'll finally figure it out," whether in business, relationships, or self-care. I share my personal journey of releasing this pattern and embracing the mindfulness principle of being present with what is.Key Themes:The significance of moon cycles for reflection and releaseHow the symbolism of a dead crow reinforced the message of transformationThe relationship between resistance and sufferingWhy believing "I haven't figured it out yet" keeps us from appreciating the present momentThe power of accepting where we are right nowResources Mentioned:FLOURISH Our signature community and program in The School of MOM to help you navigate your personal path to flourishing. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of "Mothering Ourselves Mindfully." S1 Ep 1212. How do we make lasting change in our body?

In this episode, I explore the important reminder that meaningful change - whether physical, emotional, or mental - takes time. Through sharing my personal journey with my knee (20+ years and two surgeries), I explore the parallels between physical healing and personal transformation. We dive into the four stages of change that my current PT provider - Aaron Brooks from Perfect Postures, and I chatted about at a recent appointment. According to Aaron, these are essential for physical healing and I argue that the same goes for emotional/mental growth:Activation - waking up dormant partsIntegration - bringing all parts to work togetherStrengthening - building capacity in the new patternsEndurance - maintaining changes even under stressI draw connections between Aaron’s physical healing framework and the work we do in The School of MOM, particularly around activating and strengthening more helpful inner voices and parts of ourselves. Just as my knee healing required consistency and patience, developing new patterns of thinking and being also requires dedicated time and practice.Resources Mentioned:Perfect Postures (physical therapy center in Massachusetts): https://www.perfectpostures.comThe School of MOM Quiz: Discover your dominant inner voice at https://www.theschoolofmom.com/quiz Key Takeaway: Whether we're healing our bodies or transforming our patterns of thinking and being, lasting change requires consistency, support, and patience. In this episode, I (Sarah Harmon) delve into the vital role of self-compassion in our journey of mindful living and parenting. Building on the themes from the previous days of the Begin HERE series, I discuss how self-compassion serves as a key ingredient in creating new, helpful cycles in our lives.
