Ep 61Insights: Using Ideas, Innovations and Entrepreneurship to Transform the Business of Healthcare

In this episode of the MGMA Insights podcast, we’re joined by Arlen Meyers, MD, MBA and professor emeritus of otolaryngology, dentistry and engineering at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and the Colorado School of Public Health. Meyers is also the president and CEO of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs and has authored several books and articles related to healthcare entrepreneurship and innovation. Key quote: (25:53) “If you don't innovate, it's unlikely that you will be successful in the future as a physician in a medical group practice. It's that simple. Your revenue stream will dry up. You may get burned out or dissatisfied. You will not be able to deliver the mission that you signed up for, which basically was to help take care of patients at scale. And your organization will fail. … So you can either watch the train go down the tracks or you can create your own future.” Here are some links and references related to this week’s show: * Why We Need More Physician Entrepreneurs (bit.ly/2DiDQmH) * Barriers to Physician Entrepreneurship (bit.ly/2XZs0aR) * 20 Inspiring Entrepreneurs Improving Health For All (bit.ly/37Go7vL) * Innerpreneurs, entrepreneurs, wannapreneurs and intrapraneurs (bit.ly/2DiVvKX) * 5 Myths About Becoming A Physician Entrepreneur (bit.ly/2OkUsjY) * 4 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Innovate in the Healthcare Space (bit.ly/2qEzuDV) If you like the show, please rate and review it wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 56Insights: Disaster Planning Crucial for Medical Practices in Path of Destruction

In this episode of the MGMA Insights podcast, we’re joined by Bob Bush, Vice President of Business Development & Physician Services at the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus. Just over a year removed from helping Panama City’s Bay Medical Sacred Heart through the devastation of Hurricane Michael, Bush is well-versed in disaster management. He sat down with podcast host Daniel Williams during MGMA’s 2019 Annual Conference in New Orleans to share his insights on preparing and executing a disaster plan. Don’t quite have time to listen to the entire episode? No worries. We’ve compiled a handful of highlights from Bush’s interview for your convenience: • (3:38) “A disaster could be a snowstorm. It could be a rain. It could be a tornado. It could be a hurricane. Could be earthquakes. But it also could be something more like all of a sudden you lose connectivity to your hard drive, so you lose all your patient charts or you have a fire or there’s a flood … so, disasters, it could be a lot of different things for a lot of different situations. But the thing that you have to continue to look at is what can you do to be preparing for those things and how do you minimize the impact on your practice when those disasters happen?” • (19:50) “We couldn’t get tied up with the emotional distraught of what was going around us. We had a job to do. We had to take care of our patients. We had to get them out of the facility safely. We had to take care of the other people in our facility. And that was our focus.” Here are some links and references related to this week’s show: * After Michael, damaged hospital preps for patients (VIDEO) (bit.ly/2pS1EdP) * How robust is your practice’s emergency planning and disaster preparedness? Ep 22Insider: Melissa Phillippi on the Evolution of Performance Management

In this episode of MGMA Insider we welcome Melissa Phillippi, President and Co-founder, Performance Culture. Melissa recently wrote an article (https://www.mgma.com/data/data-stories/mgma-stat-overview/how-often-is-enough-for-discussing-performance-wit ) focused on "How Often is Enough for Discussing Performance With Medical Practice Employees?" According to Melissa: "There's no one-size-fits-all on how often a manager and employee should meet. It might be different from one manager to another as far as what are the needs in order for that employee and that manager relationship to be as healthy and as successful as possible. At least once a month is what I'd recommend on a frequency, but it could be more frequent if the circumstances demand it, and it could maybe go a month and a half to two months. But I really don't encourage anything past two months of doing this check-in process. If you want to grow as a leader in your organization and help develop a stronger culture in your practice. Ep 20Insider: The Art and Science of Healthcare Onboarding

In this episode of MGMA Insider, Molly Ramsay, Principal, Corporate Operations Director, and Amber Pedersen, Administrator, both of MedMan Medical Management, join the podcast. With the unemployment rate dropping to a record-low 3.6% in April, a level not seen in 50 years, it’s created an extremely competitive marketplace Ramsay and Pedersen say this moment in history has caused many practices to change their recruitment and onboarding strategies. "I remember five years ago I would post a reception job and get over 70 resumes in the first day of posting," says Ramsay. "This last year, when I posted a reception job, I got probably 30 resumes." Not only are there fewer resumes coming in, but candidates are receiving multiple offers, which has caused additional problems. "We are experiencing applicants not showing up for the interview or accepting our position, but then resigning before they start because they got a better offer," says Pedersen. That's why Ramsay and Pedersen say it's important to "Stay engaged with the candidate all the way through the hiring process to make a connection that your organization is invested in them before they even start day one. We send a welcome email with all the paperwork that needs to be filled out so that on their first actual day we are prepared and they can login to all the systems." Ep 17Insights: Why Culture is King in Medical Practice Staff Management

In a recent MGMA stat poll, we polled more than 4,000 healthcare leaders, asking them, "What is most important when hiring staff?" Nearly 70% said cultural fit! This gives quantitative data to the often-quoted point that "Culture is King." In this MGMA Insights podcast, we explore the idea of why culture is king and how it impacts the hiring, onboarding and even firing process in medical practices. Experts interviewed include: * Jacob Simon, Executive Vice President, The Medicus Firm * Stefan Jarmusz, Project Analyst, MGMA * Dr. Susan Murphy, author, keynote speaker and business consultant * Molly Ramsay, Principal, Corporate Operations Director, MedMan Medical Management * Amber Pedersen, Administrator, MedMan Medical Management Key points from the podcast: According to Simon, culture impacts every part of an organization, but you have to actually live it every day. "You can have your core values written on your walls," but if the employees aren't embodying those values then it won't matter; you won't have a strong culture. Dr. Murphy: "The more training you can do, the more coaching, the more shadowing, the better it is because training and development is one thing you can do that will not take too much out of your compensation and benefits package." Dr. Murphy adds that there's also a hunger from younger generations to learn, and they can gain information quickly and efficiently from mentors and established training programs. Ramsay and Pedersen: "Stay engaged with the candidate all the way through the hiring process to make a connection that your organization is invested in them before they even start day one. "We send a welcome email with all the paperwork that needs to be filled out so that on their first actual day we are prepared and they can login to all the systems!" Ep 16Insider: An Anatomy of Errors -- A Healthcare Executive's Experience as a Patient

In this special edition of MGMA Insider, we speak with Barb Davis, Senior Vice President of Client Success at CipherHealth. Although Barb has experienced more than 30 years as a healthcare professional, she's here today to share her experience as a patient. While on the snowy slopes of Colorado in December 2016, Barb suffered a tibial plateau fracture. During the course of multiple surgeries, Barb experienced what she now calls, "a number of near misses" and she identified numerous "opportunities for improvement." Her article about her experience as a patient appears at https://www.mgma.com/resources/quality-patient-experience/anatomy-of-errors-my-patient-story Key points from this podcast: *The burden of communication should not lie with the patient * A simple misplacement (of Barb's clothes) led to tremendous distraction * There are plenty of opportunities for improvement of patient care at a systems level * It's easy for a patient to experience "the Swiss cheese model" of falling right through the holes in the system As Barb reflects on her experience, she has a newfound empathy with patients and the experiences they have in the healthcare system. As she writes, "I am sharing my own experiences to highlight the gap that still exists in patient safety, even when care teams have the best of intentions and when the patient is a knowledgeable healthcare consumer... After 30 years of experience working with physicians, nurses, and care teams, I didn’t call when I suspected that something wasn’t right... I accept responsibility for my own lack of action and can’t help but think about others: What about patients who haven’t worked in healthcare? Would they have fallen through the 'cheese' and experienced system errors that resulted in harm?" Ep 14Insider: Tim Smith on Physician Compensation Valuations and Data Mythbusting

In this episode of MGMA Insider, healthcare consultant Tim Smith discusses how survey data is used by professional appraisers and healthcare consultants to value physician compensation in service arrangements or as part of valuing a practice. Smith, who is a skeptic by nature, reveals the need to challenge, test and be wary of data unless it's been tested and analyzed. As Smith says, "When it comes to the business of physician practices, a set of talking points is commonly repeated about the physician marketplace and what physicians earn. These claims are often made by reference to survey data reports, but does the data really support popular beliefs about physician compensation and productivity?" He explains that "it's important to take a deep dive into the data to examine widely held paradigms about physician compensation and productivity" and be willing to be a contrarian and call out information when it isn't back up by the data. As a reminder, Smith can be heard speaking at MGMA19 | The Data Conference, May 16-18 in Orlando, Florida.
