Ep 447Six Things to Keep You Delegating Effectively w/ Jess Birken

Today we're excited to share a presentation by Jess Birken from MaxLawCon 2021! Tune in to learn more about delegating more effectively.Jess is the former CEO & Managing Partner at Urban Birken PLLC, a boutique firm that specialized in serving the nonprofit community. She has worked with nonprofit organizations for most of her career. Before becoming a private practice attorney, she spent four years inside a national nonprofit organization, Pheasants Forever. She worked her way through law school and had the beginnings of a promising career in criminal law after graduation. However, Jess quickly realized that going to court is depressing! In court, the toothpaste is out of the tube and you’re just trying to clean up the mess. Her colleagues reassured her that she would become callous and get used to the grim reality. But she thought that sounded like a terrible personal outcome and decided she needed to change course. Jess really missed the nonprofit sector. As a result, She went back to grad school and earned a Masters in Nonprofit Management. She rejoined the nonprofit sector through her work with Pheasants Forever where her role was a marriage of attorney work and federal grant management and administration. Since that time, Jess has run her own firms and is now the owner of Birken Law Office a firm designed to help nonprofits.1:16 there are some things that suck4:05 you know this drill7:12 the two Bobs from corporate10:02 why is this all worth it14:28 in managing your inbox17:03 it’s too weirdWatch the podcast here.Join the Guild: www.maxlawguild.com Resources:Join the Guild MembershipSubscribe to the Maximum Lawyer Youtube ChannelFollow us on InstagramJoin the Facebook GroupFollow the Facebook PageFollow us on LinkedIn

Ep 428Nerds and Weirdos w/ Tyson Mutrux

Today we're excited to share a presentation by Tyson Mutrux from MaxLawCon 2021! Tune in to learn about why you need more nerds and weirdos in your life.Tyson always wanted to be an attorney, but when he was younger, he didn’t think it was possible. Neither one of his parents graduated from high school, and money wasn’t something he had a lot of. His dad and mom both worked two jobs and taught him the value of hard work. As a mechanic, his dad knew how grueling manual labor could be, so he intentionally wouldn’t let Tyson work on cars so that he wouldn’t follow in his footsteps. He owes a lot to his parents, his wife, his family, and his friends for where he is today. Tyson can point to two moments in his life that led him to become a lawyer. The first may seem trivial to most, but it isn’t to him. On his high school graduation day, Tyson received a book from one of his favorite teachers, Mrs. Morgan. The book? The Street Lawyer, by John Grisham. The plot of the book isn’t what mattered; it was the message. Mrs. Morgan had always encouraged him to become a lawyer, and this was another nudge down that path. With the simple act of giving him that book, she was telling Tyson to follow his dream. The book is great, by the way – he still has the original she gave him.1:38 these are my nerds and weirdos4:08 I like weirdos a lot9:00 Jim’s feet in socks and sandals12:00 unlock your inner weirdoWatch the podcast here.Join the Guild: www.maxlawguild.comMaxLawCon tickets are on sale now! Ep 403Law Student Connect w/ Jordan Gardner

In today’s episode, Jim and Tyson chat with one of the founders of Law Student Connect, Jordan Gardner! They dive into the journey of how this platform came to be and what it’s all about. If you’re interested in learning more about connecting law firms with law students or anything in between, check out this week’s episode. The first time Jordan sat across the table from his senior partner and watched him strike his time entries from a client's bill was a defining moment in his life. Because of the compensation structure, every stroke of his pen was money Jordan wouldn't be receiving, and time he could never get back. When he left his office, he started dreaming of a better way to hedge the risk of wasting time on tasks that clients wouldn't pay full price for. That's how Law Student Connect was born. In 2019, Jordan left his job and jumped fully into creating a platform specifically for attorneys to outsource legal research, drafting, doc review, and other basic tasks to law students who were anxious to test themselves on real-world projects.4:50 at the tail end8:34 people-oriented person12:13 hire entry-level law students18:36 law students are hungry for this23:40 work is not as routine or predictableJim’s Hack: Whether you join the Guild or not, owning a law firm can be isolating, so make sure you have a place to go where you can find the support you need to let go of your stress.Jordan’s Tip: Check out the productivity app called, Text Expander. Ep 401The Post Pandemic Office Space w/ Billie Tarascio

Today we're excited to share a presentation by Billie Tarascio from MaxLawCon 2021! Tune in to learn all about Billie’s post-pandemic law firm, the review of her systems, and her experience on the path to continuing becoming an expert in the field.Billie Tarascio has been pushing the boundaries for how to build a successful law practice since starting Modern Law in 2008 in Mesa, Arizona. After graduating from Law School at the University of Oregon, she started seeing what many lawyers see. “Most of the people who needed our help couldn’t afford attorneys and lawyers needed more work,” she says. Searching for a better way of doing things for attorneys and clients alike, she started by building a low-cost law firm to help clients during a difficult economy. Alas, the numbers didn’t work, she recalls. “I needed to find some way of making divorce cheaper,” she said. That’s when she built Access Legal, a cloud-based document automation software for clients to help them create their own forms and filings, ostensibly with the coaching help of an attorney or paralegal. Still, clients were not always comfortable creating legal documents. But technology continued to drive the bottom line in her firm, where she developed techniques to tweak results that she’s been sharing with other lawyers around the country. Through her experiences and driven by metrics, Tarascio has developed the steps to create and assess changes to any law firm, and drive measurable increases in company profits – which ultimately serve clients with better service. Tarascio has four children ages 3 to 14 and lives in Gilbert, Arizona.1:26 made predictions4:01 demand is off the charts7:28 client advocate role12:55 Google mind business16:20 where are the people searching20:17 what is the purpose of the locationsWatch the podcast here.Join the Guild: www.maxlawguild.comTickets to MaxLawCon 2022 are available now!
