Ep 111The Hidden Heart Disease Risk Factor Few are Talking About with Joel Kahn – E111

We are excited to be joined by Dr. Joel Kahn. Dr. Kahn is a cardiologist and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a Summa Cum Laude graduate from the University of Michigan Medical School. He's known as "America's Holistic Heart Doc," and has authored many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. He writes articles for MindBodyGreen, Thrive Global, and Reader's Digest and has five books in publication including The Whole Heart Solution, Dead Execs Don't Get Bonuses as well as The Plant-Based Solution. He has regular appearances on Dr. Phil, The Doctors, and Fox 2 News. He also recently debated with Chris Kresser about the evidence in support of plant-based diets on the Joe Rogan Experience and has been featured with Larry King Live in a recent special about heart health. He also owns 2 health restaurants in Detroit and a food truck in Austin, Texas. How he accomplishes all of this is a complete mystery to us, but suffice it to say that Dr. Kahn is a MACHINE, he's our favorite stand-up comedian, and we're honored to call him a friend. In this episode of the Mastering Diabetes Audio Experience, we'll cover: An article he recently wrote in which he referred to low-carbohydrate diets as "high-coffin" diets, because there is ample scientific evidence that low-carbohydrate diets actually increase your risk for premature death. Why, despite this, many health professionals teach people to INCREASE their intake of meat, cheese, fish, eggs, and vegetable oil, claiming that it's the best way to "reverse" type 2 diabetes specifically because they are low in carbohydrate energy. What benefits would someone gain from becoming a plant-based low-carbohydrate eater? What are the exact benefits of short-term ketosis referenced by Dr. Valter Longo and how do those benefits change over time? What happens to blood lipids and specifically LDL cholesterol following a plant-based low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet? What happens to diabetes risk and blood glucose control following a plant-based low-carbohydrate or ketogenic diet? If there was ONE THING you could say to teach people the truth about nutrition to clear up the confusion that the Internet promotes, what would it be? You can find Dr. Joel Khan on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drjkahn/ And on his website: https://www.drjoelkahn.com/ If you enjoyed this episode please join us and Dr. Joel Khan in spreading the word about the benefits of plant-based nutrition by sharing this episode on social media and tagging us - @masteringdiabetes

Before and after going plant-based: Fasting Blood Glucose (mg/dL): 110 - 88⁣ A1c (%): 7.2 - 4.5 Weight (lbs.): 270 - 194 Cholesterol (mg): 170 - 149 Fat p/day (g): 50 - 30 Carbohydrates p/day (g): 125 - 500-700 Total Units Insulin (ml): 35-40 - 45-50 ⁣ 90% Time in range "My transition was first started due to interest for health reasons but quickly transitioned to an ethical and health reason. I am also an amateur athlete and have completed several long-distance races including full-distance Iron Man, ultra marathon, 24-hour OCR, marathon- all while being plant-based and obviously diabetic. Ep 94How Adam Shrunk a Large Kidney Tumor and Shocked His Medical Team – E94

Mark your calendar for April 11-13. We'll be hosting a special online mini-summit about COVID-19 and diabetes. Register with the link below! https://www.masteringdiabetes.org/thrive/ In today's show, we had the opportunity to interview Adam and Shoshana of the Plant Trainers Podcast, a husband-and-wife combo and incredibly inspirational individuals who are helping to spread the word about the power of plant-based nutrition. You'll learn Adam's powerful story about getting diagnosed with a kidney tumor before he began eating a plant-based diet, even though he was an avid athlete and had a great physique on the outside. You'll learn how Adam's eye doctor first discovered a cardiovascular condition by looking at the condition of blood vessels behind his eyes. You'll also learn about how it took time for Shoshana to transition to a plant-based diet even though Adam was experiencing tremendous results in the first year of becoming plant-based. But then when she did, her entire life changed in front of her eyes – and as a result, she took it upon herself to help transition their two kids to a plant-based diet (which they are admittedly infatuated with). In today's show, you'll learn how to support your partner in transitioning to a plant-based diet. You'll also learn simple strategies that Adam and Shoshana have used to teach their kids to eat more plants. Today's podcast is super fun, with two fantastic plant-based advocates. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
