Ep 275275: New Survey Reveals Misunderstandings About Veterans and Offers Opportunity to Bridge Civilian-Military Divide
From parades to ceremonies, November is filled with events to honor those who have served. But the new “CVN Military 101 Survey” reveals that Americans’ overall knowledge of the military and veterans is low. When asked what percentage of the population has ever served in the U.S. military, nearly half of Americans answered - “not sure.” “There are approximately 19-million U.S. veterans, which is about 7% of the population,” said Cohen Veterans Network President and CEO, Dr. Anthony Hassan, “They have made tremendous sacrifices in service to our country, it’s so important that we find meaningful ways to show our support beyond Veterans Day.” To help bridge the civilian-military divide, Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), a national network of mental health clinics providing accessible, high-quality care to post-9/11 veterans, service members and their families, is encouraging Americans to gain a better understanding about the military community with a Veterans Day pop quiz. “It is a critical time for us as a nation to do all that we can in support of veterans’ mental health,” said Dr. Hassan, “Sincerely connecting with those who have worn the uniform is a part of that. Our pop quiz provides an opportunity for Americans to learn something new and interesting about the military community to then engage with veterans more thoughtfully throughout the year.” CVN suggests going beyond saying “thank you for your service,” instead - asking questions. Start a conversation with a veteran to create a dialogue. Ask specific questions about their service, such as, “what was your job while serving?” Or “what branch did you serve in?” The network also suggests taking action. “Consider flying an American flag, donating to a veteran service organization, or buying a veteran a meal. While veterans did not serve for the recognition, honoring them in considerate ways can have a meaningful impact,” said Dr. Hassan. Take the pop quiz and explore ways to connect with veterans at cohenveteransnetwork.org/veteransday. Ep 274274: Creative and Delicious Ways to Incorporate Pistachios into Diabetes-Friendly Dishes
November is American Diabetes Month, and just in time for the holidays, we are looking at ways to make healthy and delicious choices as we plan for the holidays. To help navigate the holiday season and manage diabetes, people should choose foods with a balance of protein, fiber, and fat – a winning trio of nutrients that may help keep you fuller longer – like in pistachios. They're plant-based and versatile – so you can enjoy them as a snack or in recipes. Wonderful Pistachios are great for incorporating in recipes such as these three that are simple to prep, taste amazing, and provide nutrients. Wonderful Pistachios Street Tacos with Avocado Pistachio Cream Slaw Though these aren't traditional holiday dishes, we all need simple healthy meals in-between all the celebrations, and these are a great go-to. These plant-forward tacos are powered with complete protein from Wonderful Pistachios. Pistachios are a better plant-protein choice versus meat because they’re naturally cholesterol-free and add fiber to your day. For these tacos, use Wonderful Pistachios No Shells Lightly Salted. Their whole No Shells line is perfect for saving time in the kitchen because they've done the cracking for you. These tacos are packed with flavor, from pistachios to herbs and spices. The pistachio avocado slaw also works beautifully on the side of chicken or fish dishes. Wonderful Pistachios Pico de Gallo with Sweet Corn Soup For gatherings - it’s a great starter or can be put into shot glasses as an appetizer for parties. Not only do the pistachios provide crunch, but they also add complete protein that helps fuel your body with essential amino acids. What's great about soup is that you can batch cook, prep ahead, then store and freeze it. On the day of any holiday gathering, heat and serve it. Pistachio Powered Snack Board Snack boards are fun. You can mix them up in several ways by incorporating family favorites and cultural influences. To make it more special, get kids involved. When creating a board, you should always have a high-quality protein like pistachios – they’re one of the highest protein snack nuts, heart-healthy, and can be part of eating right with diabetes. For this Pistachio-Powered board recipe, we added Wonderful Pistachios In-Shell No Salt, and No Shells Lightly Salted. Both are low-sodium varieties yet still offer great taste. Next, add healthy carbs from colorful fruits and veggies to make your board balanced and gorgeous. Find these recipes and more on wonderfulpistachios.com. Halloween is approaching, and we have some lifestyle hacks to make it less scary

Ep 271271: A Brooklyn Family Turns Tragedy into Healing and Activism After the Senseless Murder of 21-Year-Old Son
The heart-wrenching book Long Live King Kobe, with text from writer/author/screenwriter Paul Auster and photos by celebrated photographer Spencer Ostrander, provides an intimate look into the grief of a large, close-knit multi-generational family in the wake of the senseless murder of one of their youngest members, Tyler Kobe Nichols. The lives of Tyler's loving family were forever changed when the twenty-one-year-old was randomly murdered in a knife attack after getting a haircut with his brother just blocks away from the family's Brooklyn home on Christmas Eve.Tyler’s mother, Sherma Chambers, cousin, Kareem Eusebe, and photographer, Spencer, stopped by the LifeMinute studios to talk about how they are turning heartbreak into healing and activism. The tragedy set in motion a chance meeting between Sherma, and photographer Spencer, at Tyler’s funeral. Spencer met with the family and took photos of them as he got to know them. So moved by the images he took, Spencer started working on creating the book. Sherma has also created a foundation called Long Live King Kobe with the mission to combat street violence with compassionate, peaceful initiatives and offer support to victims' families. If you want to donate, check them out online at longlivekingkobe.org. You can also give back by ordering the book. We’ve got the score on good nutrition for all. Food insecurity and hunger are major issues in the U.S., and former NFL lineman Jason Brown explained how we help tackle the problem. Brown is a farmer himself and knows firsthand the importance of being involved. He’s teamed up with Quaker to make a difference and to encourage others to donate to the brand’s ongoing effort to advance food security in partnership with Feeding America. The monetary equivalent of meals will be donated. From October 14, 2022, to February 12, 2023, Quaker will match donations dollar for dollar, up to a total maximum donation of $250,000. Ep 270270: Helping Small Businesses Thrive
As small businesses continue to face tremendous challenges, one company recognizes the pivotal role these businesses play in the vitality of their local economies, and the needs they fill in the communities they serve. In 2021, Global technology powerhouse, Lenovo, launched the Evolve Small Initiative, based on the belief that small businesses are the heart of North America. With the help of partners across the United States and Canada, Lenovo has led an effort to provide financial aid, mentorship resources, and community support to minority and woman-owned small businesses as they recover from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year the initiative in partnership with Microsoft and AMD, will continue to support these entities by giving select small businesses the opportunity to partner with a high-profile celebrity. They can leverage custom marketing materials and mentorship from the celebrity partner and Lenovo Evolve Small Ambassadors. These small businesses will receive the technological support needed to implement systems and processes that allow them to elevate their day-to-day business operations.Small businesses in the U.S. and Canada can apply to be included in the Evolve Small campaign beginning October 13th.. Ep 269269: Back to School Meal Prep Has Never Been This Easy
It's back to school, back to work, back to a busy fall season, and we have the dinnertime tips. We've got you covered with easy and quick meal suggestions and ingenious hacks to get ahead of your busy day and satisfy even the pickiest eaters, plus make meal prep and cleanup a breeze. We are always looking for ways to make mealtime easier. But when you have picky eaters who don't always want to eat the same thing you are, making multiple dinners can be a real challenge. An awesome hack we love is using Reynolds Kitchens Slow Cooker Liners to make two different meals in one pot with fast and easy cleanup. All you have to do is tear off a few sheets of Reynolds Heavy Duty Foil and create a divider that will stand up on its own. Next, anchor the Reynolds Kitchens Slow Cooker Liners on either side. It's great for making different varieties of chili in one pot or a main dish like a chicken dish with a side like mac and cheese. And with football season now, it can also serve as a dip divider for spreads such as warm queso, buffalo chicken dip, or artichoke dip. The possibilities are endless with this hack, and it makes cleanup fast and easy. Check out reynoldsbrands.com for a ton of great slow cooker recipe inspiration. Ep 268268: Tips for Managing Canine Incontinence
Coming off National Dog Day on August 26th, we have the scoop on how to care for our four-legged loved ones. In particular, how to address a common issue and what it may really mean when it comes to your dog’s health. What do dog owners need to be aware of when a dog is peeing inside the house? Well there may be a medical reason, such as canine urinary incontinence, that can be treated with a once-daily medication. Canine urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter hypotonus is a medical condition where the muscles that control urine flow don’t function properly, allowing urine to leak out when your dog is relaxed or sleeping. One of the most common signs of the condition is a wet spot where your dog sleeps. Continuous urine leaking can also lead to red, irritated skin around the genitals or cause your dog to lick that area excessively. This is different from behavioral causes of indoor urination. If your dog is lifting a leg or squatting to pee or is dribbling urine when excited, the cause is more likely to be behavioral in nature. It’s important to recognize that none of these peeing habits mean your dog is misbehaving or lacks training. Whether the cause of these “accidents” is medical or behavioral, a veterinarian can help you figure out the best way to manage it.Any dog can experience incontinence, but it is most common in middle-aged and older spayed females. Midsize and large breeds are also more likely than small breeds to develop incontinence. You can talk to your veterinarian who may prescribe Proin ER, a once-a-day tablet that safely and effectively treats the issue.Proin ER is FDA-approved and it’s flavored to be delicious to dogs, so giving it to your dog is easy.If your veterinarian prescribes it, just watch for the most commonly reported side effects, which are vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, salivation and tiredness, vocalization, confusion, increased water consumption, weight loss, weakness, fever, panting, and reversible changes in skin color (flushing or bright pink.) It may elevate blood pressure and should be used with caution in dogs with conditions associated with high blood pressure.Visit proin-er.com for more on canine urinary incontinence and talk to your veterinarian about any questions you have about your dog’s peeing habits and whether Proin ER is right for your dog.Watch the video: https://lifeminute.tv/home-and-family/video/tips-managing-canine-incontinence

Ep 266266: Healthy Summer Eating Guide
Looking to eat healthily but unable to get the whole family on board? Good Housekeeping registered dietitian Stefani Sassos joins us to share these delicious, family-friendly grocery picks to satisfy everyone in the house. We start with these innovative family-friendly snacks from Brainiac Foods that include applesauce, fruit and veggie pouches, bars, and nut butters, all made with premium, wholesome ingredients that stand apart from others on the shelves because they all include proprietary Brainpack, a combination of omega-3s, choline, and lutein to support memory, attention, focus, and overall brain health and development. The applesauce pouches have 160mg of omega-3s, 120 mg of choline, and 25mg of vitamin C, the same amount of omega-3s as a two-ounce salmon filet and as much choline as two cups of broccoli. We love that they have no added sugar, no artificial flavors, and are non-GMO and gluten-free. You can find them at most major retailers, including Walmart, Amazon, and Thrive Market. And speaking of apples, our next pick is not your average fruit. Cosmic Crisp apples are incredibly juicy and naturally sweet, delivering the perfect crispy, crunchy texture. Classically bred, non-GMO, and grown in Washington state, this is the most versatile apple you'll find. It's also a parent go-to because it's slow to brown, making it an excellent summer snack for kids and a lunch box addition for camp. Cosmic Crisp apples hold up great for baking too. Visit cosmiccrisp.com for a ton of recipe inspiration. Pro tip: We recommend storing them in the fridge away from citrus to keep them crisp and maintain their freshness longer.Another family-friendly go-to you want to stock up on is the new Green Giant Restaurant Style sides. The honey-glazed carrots with sage butter are beyond delicious, making it easy to elevate any family meal. These chef-created, restaurant-inspired side dishes go from freezer to table in minutes and are the ultimate dinner hack. Visit greengiant.com to learn more about the sides and browse their incredible veggie-packed lineup.Another great way to elevate family dinnertime is by using Dash. Dash seasoning blends add vibrant flavor to your meals in a dash. Spice up all of your favorite meals quickly and easily without adding sodium. There are dozens of heart-healthy, salt-free, flavorful blends to choose from, which is a great way to get the kids involved with meal prep. Each blend is made with a combination of spices so you can enhance your favorite dishes no matter what you are cooking. Find Dash products at most grocery stores in the spice aisle, priced at around $3 each. Visit mrsdash.com/locate to find one near you.For a protein-packed, budget-friendly option at any time of day, eggs are a grocery list staple too. But Eggland's Best eggs are a notch above. They contain 6x more vitamin D, 10x more vitamin E, 25% less saturated fat, and more than double the omega-3s and vitamin B12 compared to ordinary eggs due to its proprietary all-vegetarian hen feed that contains healthy grains, canola oil, and a supplemental blend of rice bran, alfalfa, sea kelp, and vitamin E. Look for the red "EB" stamp on the top of the eggshell. Go to egglandsbest.com to learn more.Nuts are also good for you. We love Hampton Farms in-shell peanuts. They contain seven grams of protein per serving. They are high in vitamins and minerals, sustainably sourced, and naturally gluten and cholesterol free. Plus, they are delicious, and they are great for healthy snacking. Find them in the produce aisle of your local grocery store. And speaking of protein, you will love Wonderful Pistachios. They are a complete protein, providing all nine essential amino acids, the only good source of protein among popular snack nuts, with six grams of complete plant protein per serving. Naturally cholesterol-free, pistachios add fiber to your day and may help keep you feeling fuller for longer. About 90% of the fats found in pistachios are unsaturated, making it a heart-healthy snack too. No shells are an easy-to-go solution for the whole family, tossing them onto salads and smoothies. Wonderful Pistachios are available in an assortment of seriously delicious flavors like smoky barbecue and chili roasted. You can also choose in-shell as cracking open pistachio shells may slow you down during snack time. The empty shells may be a visual cue that helps snackers eat mindfully. The latest issue of Good Housekeeping is on newsstands now, and you can visit goodhousekeeping.com for more information on healthy eating.Watch the video: https://lifeminute.tv/health/video/healthy-summer-eating-guide

Ep 263263: Design Updates to Freshen Up Your Home
Summer is here, and that means the start of social gatherings –most likely in the space everyone gravitates towards, whether you like it or not... the kitchen. It’s the heart of every home. And if you've been thinking about upgrading this space, you’re not alone. The 2022 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found that homeowners are paying big bucks for kitchen remodels and the splurging on countertops. What are the most popular? Engineered quartz and granite, and rightfully so. They’re a wiser option for long-term durability and withstanding heat, literally. Selecting a countertop that can take a beating these days is vital. With everyone working from home now, the kitchen is no longer used only for cooking and entertaining. It’s the workhorse of the house. So it's essential to have something functional. Silestone is one of our favorites. It’s a mineral hybrid quartz surface, and they just expanded their color options at Home Depot with two new exclusive colors: Ethereal indigo and Ethereal cloud. It’s beautiful, mimicking the look and feel of natural marble everyone wants but is unlike sensitive marble. So, you get the high-performance Silestone, and you don’t have to worry about etching, chipping, scratching, or staining.Another reason we love Silestone is that it’s sustainable. It uses new HybriQ+ Technology, which means it is manufactured with 99% recycled water and 100% renewable electric energy and made with at least 20% recycled raw materials, so it’s eco-friendly. We are also loving Dekton by Cosentino, which is particularly great for outdoor surfaces. So many people are thinking about that now. According to the American Society of Interior Designers Trends Report, adding an outdoor kitchen and upgrading outdoor furniture were among this year's top projects. So if this is on your radar, it's even more critical to get something durable due to weather conditions. The Cosentino's Dekton surface is also resistant to stains, scratches, chipping and UV rays, thermal shock, fire, and heat. It’s made of a mixture of raw materials, including glass, porcelain, and quartz, and is one of the most durable and functional on the market. What’s even better is that it comes with a 25-year warranty. All Dekton products are certified carbon-neutral, making it another eco-friendly buy. Some new colors to check out are Rem, inspired by Calacatta Lincoln marble. It’s a gorgeous brown and grey veining with hints of gold. Next is Laos, a dark matte gray color that imitates concrete texture. It looks great with exposed brick, reclaimed wood, mixed metals, and other natural, rustic materials. Lastly, Dekton Soke, inspired by classic cement floors, is perfect for durable flooring. You can find all of these beauties at your local Home Depot. Don’t forget to call on them for expert advice and consultation. Home Depot home services have certified pros to help with your project of any size and budget with both virtual and in-person options. They can help you install, repair or help with a complete remodel. You can find out more about these stunning products at cosentino.com. And you can shop for them at your nearest Home Depot store.Watch the video: https://lifeminute.tv/home-and-family/video/design-updates-freshen-your-home

Ep 262262: Money Savvy Tips for Summer Travel
Summertime travel is in full swing, but like many Americans, as prices continue to rise, you’re probably looking for ways to be savvy with your spending. According to data from the U.S. Labor Department in June, year over year, we have seen the cost of consumer goods and services increase by 8.6%, as measured by the Consumer Price Index, making it the largest 12-month increase since December 1981. Here are some ways to save on summer travel this season. For starters, consider being flexible with your travel dates. When you’re more flexible, you can often find dips in travel prices. Look for low-season destinations or scope out cool, fun places close to home that you haven’t considered before. Another great way to save is checking if your credit card has special offers or benefits that can help you earn cash back on travel. Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex, for example, recently launched their latest quarterly bonus offers. Between July 1st through September 30, you can earn 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent on things like car rentals and gas stations, perfect if you’re thinking about a road trip. Live entertainment and movie theater purchases also get 5% cash back through the end of September, so you can finally see that hot movie premiere or your favorite artist on tour you have wanted to see without worrying about your wallet. If you’re not a Chase Freedom cardmember, consider applying. Chase Freedom recently extended their new cardmember gas offer, which includes a $200 sign-up bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening, plus 5% cashback for each $1 spent on gas station purchases made within the first year of opening an account or until you reach $6,000 in gas station purchases, whichever happens first. As if it couldn’t get better, Freedom + Flex cardmembers can also earn 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase’s Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on dining and drugstores, and 1% cash back on all other purchases, so you’re always earning on summer travel and beyond. We’re kicking off the summer season just in time for Memorial Day weekend with some fun, entertaining ideas. Go Buffet Style Buffet style is easy for hosts and more enjoyable for guests. The buffet allows your guest to decide what they want to eat without you having to serve it. We’ve made a walking burger bar inspired by the well-known walking taco. You can use Reynolds Wrap to make walking burger foil pouches, which provide a customizable way for your guests to personalize their favorite summer BBQ staple. Making Foil Pouches Step 1: Place a 12-by-12-inch piece of Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty Foil on your workspace. Step 2: Fold over the torn edges about 1 inch to create a smooth edge. Fold the foil in half. Step 3: Triple-fold each open side about 1 inch to seal the sides of the packet, and you’ve got yourself a walking burger pouch. Assembling Walking Burger Bar First, lay a long piece of Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty foil down the middle of the table, then lay all ingredients and toppings down. Finally, let your guests grab one of the pre-made walking burger foil pouches and add their protein of choice. When it’s all done, roll up your foil. And voila, you’re done without fuss or mess. Ep 253253: The World’s First Marathon in the Metaverse
Inclusion is key for individuals with disabilities. But just like the real world, the Metaverse is still not meeting the ambitions of a world free of physical limitations and societal stereotypes. That’s why Paralympic athlete and advocate Blake Leeper, along with Degree Deodorant, are continuing their mission to break down barriers and create a world where everyone has the confidence to move more. The Metaverse, positioned as a new virtual world free of physical limitations and societal stereotypes, is not yet meeting these ambitions. In fact, 60% of people feel that virtual worlds lack inclusivity. And many are calling for more accessibility. However, the Metaverse is still in its early stages of development, which is why Degree Deodorant will partner with the virtual world, Decentraland, to help shape the standard of inclusivity and representation in the virtual world. Created in partnership with Decentraland, Degree’s first step in the Metaverse is its introduction of a more inclusive avatar library. Available for the first time at The Degree Metathon, these newly developed wearables—such as prostheses, running blades, and a wheelchair—offer greater representation for people with disabilities and enable participants to create avatars representative of their unique identities. Ep 249249: Calm and Confident Parenting Advice
We’re always looking for calm and confident parenting advice. From bath time to skincare and more, here are some of our tips for bringing up baby. One of the first questions parents of newborns ask is what type of laundry detergent to use. The answer is gentle, hypoallergenic products. Arm & Hammer, a trusted brand, just introduced their new hypoallergenic detergent for babies. It's a liquid detergent that removes messy baby stains. Yet, it is free from harsh chemicals, dyes, and preservatives, so it's gentle on a baby's skin.At a time when we’re seeing rising costs, this detergent is also affordable too. Parents can use it on newborn stains to solid food stains from infants. The detergent is made with safer ingredients, meeting EPA Safer Choice product standards. And it's pediatrician tested. You can get it at Walmart or online and select grocery retailers in two sizes.Next up is skincare regimens. Many adults often talk about getting baby soft perfect skin. But newborn skin is not always perfect. Rashes are common. And they are often a big source of concern for many new parents. The good news is that most newborn rashes are benign and get better very quickly with minimal treatment. But some do require treatment. If your baby seems unwell or you are concerned, call your pediatrician. In the beginning, caring for your newborn’s skin is pretty simple. Initially, minimal baths and water are all you need. The recommendation is minimal baths, two times per week. At most every other day. Newborns and infants are not crawling around getting dirty at this age, so there is no need to bathe them daily. And more frequent baths will just dry out their skin more. Also, although parents often like to use lotions on their babies after a bath, this isn’t necessary. However, if you prefer to use a lotion, use only baby lotions and put them on the baby’s skin while it is still wet, then pat dry. Babies are often born with very dry skin, especially past the due date. The skin will peel, but the skin underneath is soft. The dry skin will get better without treatment. When it comes to diaper rash, frequent diaper changes help. It should happen approximately every 2-3 hours. Or, of course, when your baby has a wet or dirty diaper, to prevent rash on the skin. Have a Munchkin diaper pail on hand, which can help control odor from those frequent changes and make the changing process easier.Occasionally, air-drying the diaper area can also help prevent diaper rashes. Diaper cream or ointment can be used to prevent a diaper rash since they provide a good barrier between the diaper and the baby’s skin. If the baby does develop a rash, we find Triple Paste works great. But any product with zinc oxide works well to heal irritated skin. If the diaper rash doesn’t improve or it gets worse, see your pediatrician. It’s important to create a nighttime ritual to help create better sleep habits, which is so important too. Getting into a routine ensures a good night’s sleep for everyone and can be done no matter what’s going on in your home. In case of an emergency, keep a few complete first-aid kits, for example, one at home, one in the car, and one in the diaper bag. Buying a pre-made first-aid kit is one good way to get all the key basics in one go. Then, simply add whatever else you need or want, things such as a thermometer, petroleum jelly, alcohol wipes, sterile gauze pads, baby wipes, bandages, and antibiotic ointment. Just make sure everything is up to date.Watch the video: https://lifeminute.tv/home-and-family/video/calm-and-confident-parenting-advice

Ep 248248: Honoring “Mighty Military Children” and Learning from Their Resilience
April is the Month of the Military Child. One organization is honoring and caring for them while letting parents know what they can learn from military children to help build resilience in their own kids. Cohen Veterans Network (CVN) is a national not-for-profit organization providing high-quality, accessible mental health services to post-9/11 veterans, service members, and their families. Since its inception in 2016, the network has cared for 30,000 individuals with children making up 16% of clients served. “Military children are at the heart of what we do in support of military families across the country every day," says CEO Dr. Anthony Hassan. CVN this month celebrates "mighty military kids" for their strength and resilience. These children often adapt to change and overcome the unique challenges associated with military life. In fact, since 2001, two million military children have had a parent deployed, and military families relocate three times more often than civilian families. When it comes to building resilience, what can all kids learn from mighty military kids? CVN has some strategies parents can employ to foster resilience in their children. This includes creating a daily routine. “You can encourage a sense of stability by establishing and maintaining a routine - while teaching flexibility," says Dr. Hassan. "Talk through how your child might adapt if a plan were to get interrupted." Dr. Hassan suggests reframing challenges too. If faced with a difficulty or disappointment, help your child focus on what they have instead of what they’ve lost. Acknowledge their feelings, then discuss any opportunities the challenge might present. Lastly, Dr. Hassan says parents can assist their children in setting attainable goals by helping them break them down into smaller steps. This will help focus their attention on one task at a time, building resilience to move forward as different challenges arise. As CVN celebrates military kids, they are inviting military families and supporters everywhere to join in by sharing photos and anecdotes of military children, both past and present, on social media using #mightymilitarykids. CVN has also developed a list of resources that provides essential support to military children and downloadable activity sheets for military families. Ep 243243: How to Protect Yourself Against Unexpected Home Repair Costs
Just in time for National Home Warranty Day (February 10th), we are sharing the crucial info you need to protect your budget and peace of mind against costly home repairs.
