And when the sawdust settled, two champions were crowned: Erin LaVoie and Nate Hodges. This is the third championship win for Erin LaVoie of Spokane, Washington, breaking a new world record with a time of 23.61 seconds in the underhand chop, more than 5 seconds faster than the previous world record holder. LaVoie narrowly defeated reigning champ Martha King of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, by one point. King also broke a world record in the single buck with a time of 14.24 seconds. LaVoie and King are now tied with three U.S. championship wins each. For the men, Nate Hodges of North Fork, California, finally took home the gold against Matthew Cogar of Grafton, West Virginia, beating him out by only one point following several nail-biting podium finishes over the last few seasons. If you’re traveling abroad, don’t forget the appropriate adapter. Stay plugged into entertaining channels and favorite shows with a streaming device. Be aware of some of the most missed deductions and credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), worth up to $7,430 for families with three kids who qualify. The IRS states one out of five qualifying families miss the credit. Then there’s the Other Dependents Credit (ODC) if you have been supporting a boyfriend or girlfriend. Lastly, deductions for student loan interest, since the pause on student loans was lifted last year. If you are delaying filing because you are eligible for the Child Tax Credit and you are hearing about changes, don’t delay filing. The IRS commissioner has stated that if the child tax credit is expanded later this year, the IRS will adjust impacted returns, issue any additional credits, and you won’t need to do anything extra so there’s no need to delay. Kathy Pickering, Chief Tax Officer for H&R Block, touches on some notable ones to look out for. Additionally, federal tax credits for electric vehicles (EVs) have been revised, potentially affecting the amount you can claim. Lastly, the Child Tax Credit. Although the current rules for these credits haven’t changed from last year, Congress is presently re-evaluating where these stand as many of the inflation numbers that these rules rely upon for calculation have increased. Congress is looking at making significant changes to the Child Tax Credit for the 2023 tax year. These changes are not finalized, and we are unsure when or if they will be. Still, taxpayers should file their taxes now instead of waiting to see if the child tax credit will be passed. If passed, the legislation as it's currently written, gives the IRS maximum flexibility to issue additional refunds for those who have already filed without requiring further action. Starting your return early with H&R Block gives you more time to gather the necessary information that could increase the size of your refund. Often, taxpayers forgo itemizing their deductions because of the time required to gather receipts and other evidence. Also, filing early locks your social security number, preventing someone else from filing using it. It also means you will get your return sooner. Well, Intuit TurboTax, America’s number 1 tax prep provider, has released new data and key insights on how Americans earned, spent, and saved on their taxes last year, what they can look forward to for tax year 2023, and how they can save on their upcoming taxes. The findings were based on anonymized and aggregated data from returns filed last tax year with TurboTax. First, a reduction in the percentage of returns with refunds was more pronounced for low-income tax filers; the number of single tax filers in the lowest income category who received a refund in tax year 2022 dropped by 22 percentage points compared to 2021. The percentage of filers with a 1099-NEC or 1099-K grew from 6.7 % to 8.1% between tax years 2021 and 2022, indicating there continues to be a rise in self-employment and side gigs. Single parents or single filers with dependents filing as Head of Household (HOH) experienced an 8.6% increase in median Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) compared to 2.7% the prior year. The percentage of filers reporting crypto transactions was still highest for the 25-34 age group, but crypto reporting has fallen across nearly all age groups in the tax year 2022. 2.34% of tax filers included crypto transactions in their returns. What can we do to better ourselves in the coming year? Though some filers received lower refunds in 2022 due to COVID relief going away, keep in mind there are still tax credits to take advantage of, such as the Child Tax Credit of up to $2000 or the Child Independent Care Credit. Also, the IRS made adjustments to many available tax deductions. For instance, the standard deduction, which was increased, is the highest in decades, so that should help people this coming tax season. Then, there are also moves you can make by the end of the year that can help your tax situation, like maximizing your retirement plans to build up your nest egg while lowering your taxable income.
