Ep 238238: Pet Parenting Made Easy

Whether you need general pet health and safety advice, tips on keeping your pet active and stimulated during the winter months, or questions on keeping your furry family members free from in-home holiday dangers, we’ve got the latest tips, the most trusted vet recommendations, and the best products for pet parents everywhere just in time for the holiday season. We tackle all of your questions and concerns for your pet's safety and well-being with Chewy’s Senior Veterinarian Dr. Katy Nelson. Are there any holiday dishes safe to give my pet? It’s best to stick with your pets’ healthy diet, even when we may be indulging a bit during the holidays. Pets have much more sensitive GI tracts than most humans do, and the fat, sugar, and salt we consume during the holidays, which bring on a couple of extra pounds, can be deadly to our pets. So stick with what their guts know to avoid illness. Even better, make your pet your exercise partner during the holidays, so you BOTH stay safe and healthy throughout the holiday season. What should I do if my pet eats something they weren’t supposed to? Chewy offers health care services to make the pet parenting experience easier and more convenient such as Connect with a Vet. With this service, Chewy makes it possible for pet parents to connect directly with a licensed veterinarian 24/7 to receive advice, discuss health and wellness concerns of their pet, and receive referrals to their local vets or emergency clinics. CWAV is a great resource for urgent situations like these, providing fast and easy access to licensed veterinarians. Also, always keep the number to Animal Poison Control programmed in your phone and/or displayed on your fridge so you can connect with the proper source instantly. We have guests coming for the holidays. Anything I should be aware of to keep them and my pets safe? The number one call to Poison Control every year is for the ingestion of human medications. Guests come with their meds, their purses full of gum (or cigarettes), and maybe even their favorite candy or desserts. These items can all pose major dangers to pets too. So keep guest room doors closed and bags away from pets. And warn your guests of any allergies or sensitivities your pet may have so your guests don’t unknowingly give your pets something that could make them ill. What household dangers are there during the holidays besides food? It’s the most beautiful time of the year, but those trees, plants, flowers, bows, tinsel, bells, candles, and shiny glass balls can all pose their own dangers. Keep breakable/flammable items well out of reach of pets, cover Christmas tree water tightly, and consider your pets’ individual personalities when it comes to specific decorations. My pets get very stressed with company, lights, trees, etc. How can I help? All the new things in the house (and the new people) can be scary for some pets. Talk with a licensed vet today through Chewy to discuss some great ways to keep your pets merry and calm for the holidays. From supplements to pheromones, Chewy has some amazing calming products for both dogs and cats. For severe anxiety, talk to your vet ahead of time to discuss the possibility of prescription intervention. And remember, if you’re traveling for the holidays, make sure your pet is up to date on their vaccines at least two weeks before boarding. Ep 235235: Learn How to Manage Your Home Budget in 2022

With the housing market exploding this past year, now is the time to take stock of your home finances. The current frenzy has caused some to skip inspections and buy incredibly quickly. Sometimes without even setting foot in the house. Unfortunately, that comes with unexpected expenses. In the past year, nearly half (47%) of all homeowners have had to endure one to two unexpected home repair costs for which they hadn’t planned. 39% admitted they dealt with three to four unplanned expenditures and one in four said they don’t even have a budget set aside for unexpected home repairs. On top of all that, it’s even hard to get home repair contractors to come now. To plan, start by taking these steps. First, you should consider having a home warranty, which is a year-long, renewable home service plan that keeps homeowners protected should a covered breakdown occur. It’s a budget-friendly way to plan for the normal wear and tear of systems and appliances you use daily by helping cut the cost to repair or replace them. It helps protect your home and your budget so you can spend less over time and avoid unexpected expenses. American Home Shield is the leading provider with more than 50 years in the industry. Their plans help cover the cost when parts of up to 23 home appliances and systems wear out. And if they can’t repair your covered item, it’s replaced – no matter the age. Plus, they have a network of more than 17,000 contractors and experts to help no matter where you live. They also cover what home insurance doesn’t. They have flexible plans to meet different needs and budgets and can be customized to cover add-on items like personal electronics, garage doors, and more. And they’ve paid more home warranty claims than anyone. Plans start as low as $40 per month and vary in cost and coverage. In addition to the monthly rate, each time you call for service, you’ll pay a trade service call fee for each trade professional (plumber, electrician, etc.) It’s easy to get one. Customers can choose the coverage that best suits their home. Once you’ve decided on the best plan for the household, you need to enter your address and zip code to make sure you get the most accurate pricing for where you live. AHS will contact customers with prices and other important information. You can set up your member account in minutes and start using your home warranty after a 30-day waiting period. After that time frame, you can request services through your member account or by giving AHS a call. Ep 235235: Up Your Holiday Baking Game

‘Tis the season to bake, and we quite literally have the “scoop” on the essentials to make it happen. There’s a difference between good baking and great baking, and it all starts with what’s in your pantry. Here are the five must-have items you need to take your holiday baking recipes to the next level. 1. Baker’s Joy: It’s the original nonstick baking spray with flour. That's the secret here. Every home baker knows one of the trickiest steps of any recipe is the final one – releasing your creation from the pan without damaging it. Using a flour-based baking spray gives you an easy release from the pan. And faster, more successful baking overall. 2. Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening: While many view shortening and butter as interchangeable, they’re not. Reach for shortening any time you want your recipe to rise high and retain its shape. Or to attain that perfect flaky pastry or crust. It’s also great as a plant-based swap because it’s an all-vegetable shortening. 3. Baking Powder: This is the workhorse of so many recipes. One cannot overstate the importance of a dependable, double-acting baking powder. To that end, stick with tried-and-true brands like Clabber Girl. They've been around for more than 100 years. And, did you know baking powder is used to increase the volume and lighten the texture of baked goods? Double-acting baking powder reacts both in the liquid bowl and again when the heat hits it during baking. 4. Spices: Any serious baker worth their salt will have a “go big or go home” mentality when it comes to spices. So give dishes extra depth by culling your collection to include only high-quality spices that pack a punch like Spice Islands. It’s a great brand. PS. Keeping spices dry prolongs their flavor, so place them in a cool dry rack and away from oven heat. 5. Sugar Substitutes: Last but not least, vanilla extract. Whether you’re cutting back on added sugars or simply running low on the sweet stuff, vanilla extract is a flavorful, better-for-you sugar substitute. This is also true of molasses. It offers a jolt of sweetness and acidity. Head to bakingathome.com for tons of baking tips, recipes ideas, and tutorials. Ep 233233: Good for You Food to Be Thankful For

With so much home cooking, the holidays offer many great opportunities to choose foods that nourish and keep you balanced all day long. We like to choose foods that offer a combination of fat, fiber, and protein to help keep us fuller longer, like pistachios. That’s why we love turning to Wonderful Pistachios to help make healthy choices. Pistachios are so versatile, and you can easily add them to any meal of the day or enjoy them as a snack. Plus, they are diabetes-friendly. Here are three delicious and nutritious recipes to try out this holiday season. Pistachio Chimichurri The pistachios in this give it an amazing texture, flavor, and a boost of plant protein. There are plenty of healthy fats between the olive oil and pistachios. Nearly 90% of the fats found in pistachios are the better-for-you mono and polyunsaturated fats. I use the Lightly Salted Wonderful Pistachios in this – no shells. It's perfect for the kitchen. You can use any herb you prefer – parsley, cilantro, even mint. The whole thing is plant-based. You will truly want this on everything. It brings balance to a pasta dish, on toast, or as you see here, in appetizers. This is a whole wheat baguette, pan-seared in a little olive oil, topped with a thin slice of aged manchego cheese, some of this amazing chimichurri, and garnished with seasonal pomegranate arils. Pistachio-Powered Snack Board The secret to a healthy snack board is to offer a variety of balanced choices so you can get really good nutrition nibbling from a balanced snack board. This is delicious proof that fitting complete plant protein into your day doesn't have to be hard. Pistachios are the only good source of protein, with over 10% of DV, among popular snack nuts. Pistachios provide six grams of plant protein per serving that helps fuel your body with all nine essential amino acids. The centerpiece of my snack board is Wonderful Pistachios No Salt, in the shell, which can be a social activity as people gather around to crack open shells together. Don’t forget to have a small bowl nearby for the shells. I also have the Lightly Salted, Chili Roasted, and Honey Roasted pistachios on my board. Petite Pistachio Palettes To wrap up: Who doesn’t like a little something sweet?! These petite pistachio palettes are perfect for the holidays. Easy to make in advance, they look special but are so simple to put together. We like to use the Chili Roasted Pistachios for an extra kick. It works so well with dark chocolate, but the Lightly Salted Pistachios are great on these too. It’s easy to make some of each, so you have something for everyone. These would also make a great homemade gift. Watch the video: https://lifeminute.tv/eat-and-drink/video/good-you-food-be-thankful

Ep 233233: Healthy Holiday Mocktails, Snacks, and Dishes Made with Pomegranate

A big part of your best offense and defense all year long will be choosing the right foods to fuel your body. The power of whole foods is so beautiful, and when it comes to pomegranates, you can see the antioxidant goodness shine through in that beautiful ruby red color. It happens to be National Pomegranate Month, which kicks off the three months when the Jewel of Winter – that’s pomegranates – are in season and at their best November through January. You can incorporate the fruit and its arils into many fun recipes, such as snacks, salads, and elegant mocktails. Not only does pomegranate juice look so beautiful in a glass, but it also has, on average, four times the antioxidants of green tea. And it’s just pomegranates, so it’s a great ingredient to work with. Each 16 oz. bottle has the juice of four whole-pressed pomegranates. That’s it - no fillers and never any added sugars. This is not your ‘80s mocktail. Today’s buzz-free sips are more sophisticated. So it can feel special, without the hangover. It will continue to be a big trend going into 2022. Millennials and Gen Zers are especially sober-curious. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, but the choice to go booze-free in an elevated way is on the rise and on-trend. Every pomegranate has a variety of polyphenol antioxidants in the juice and the fresh fruit. These antioxidants help fight free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can cause damage to our bodies over time. Every 8 ounces of POM Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice has 700 mg of polyphenol antioxidants. Plus, you’ll get that fiber boost from the fresh POM Wonderful Pomegranate arils sprinkled on top. You can find the family of POM Wonderful products at your local grocery store in the produce department. Fresh pomegranates and POM Wonderful Pomegranate Arils are available from now until February, so get them while they’re in season.Watch the video: https://lifeminute.tv/eat-and-drink/video/healthy-holiday-mocktails-snacks-and-dishes-made-pomegranate

Ep 232232: Fiscal Fitness Guide—The New Normal When It Comes to Your Finances

As the year comes to an end, we’re talking about the new normal when it comes to your finances. We share some tips and tricks to keep you fiscally fit in the new year. Well, for starters, you need to assess where you are and where you want to be. Chase did a study and understandably found that post-pandemic people are actively trying to improve their credit. Credit is essential when it comes to making purchases, especially big-ticket items like a home or car. Credit plays an integral role in achieving life milestones. Your financial history is measured and weighed, allowing the credit bureaus to give you a score known as your credit score. And this is a reason why it’s important to understand how credit works and how you use it. When used correctly, credit cards can be a valuable tool in boosting your credit score. Look for a credit card that comes with some benefits. Consider an automatic APR reduction or a credit line increase. The new Chase Slate card, for example, is unique because it does all of these things, and there’s no annual fee. Plus, it has other benefits, like a $100 statement credit when you spend $500 in the first 6 months and access to Chase’s digital credit tools to help you make financial decisions. It gives cardmembers the ability to take some control of their finances. It helps them reach their financial goals faster and just put their best financial foot forward. What else should we be doing? Make payments on time since late payments can negatively impact our credit score. A payment that's more than 30 days past due can knock as many as 100 points off your credit score. Paying off your balance each month is not only a good practice for reducing your debt burden, but it also helps keep your utilization in check. Paying the minimum payment can be costly to your wallet and score, especially if you’re paying a high-interest rate. If you can’t pay off the entire balance, consider making more than just the minimum payment. That way, you’re not just paying interest but also the principal. Make sure to check your credit score. It is very difficult to change what you don’t track and measure. There are a variety of free tools available to check your credit score so that you can begin making necessary changes and adjustments before your next major financial decision. For example, Chase Credit Journey is free to use (you don’t have to be a Chase customer to enroll) and can help you: ● see your latest credit score for free anytime without affecting your credit. ● get notified if your data is breached or exposed on the dark web. ● receive critical alerts to help protect your credit and identity. ● explore personalized resources to help you build and maintain your credit. Reaching your financial goals takes time, effort, and careful planning, but it is possible. We’re all on a journey of some sort, but by taking simple steps today, your money goals can be well within reach. Finally, be accountable. Accountability can play a big role in maintaining your momentum and following through with your plans. Accountability can come from expected or unexpected places such and friends, family, online communities, or local groups you are a part of. Lastly, honesty is an important trait that can help you with your financial progress. To begin and maintain financial progress requires being honest with yourself and taking accountability for your decisions. It is much easier to change what you are honest about than not. For example, if you are honest with yourself, you’ll be able to truthfully answer “can I really afford this right now?”, which can help you avoid a potentially costly financial mistake. Reaching your goals can seem intimidating at first, but the longer you work at it, the more of a habit it becomes. No matter where you are in your journey towards owning your finances, with the right plan and tools, you’ll be able to reach your goals. Ep 229229: Home Improvement Do’s and Don’ts

With home improvement and DIY projects on the rise, many homeowners are tempted to tackle some jobs themselves rather than hire a professional. With more than 35 years of professional experience, Veronica Rose, the first female to achieve and hold a master electrician license in New York City, shares examples of when to call your electrician. For starters, let’s talk extension cord overload. Using too many extension cords in one area can pose a fire hazard — there’s a reason why electricians hide electrical wiring within the walls. Extension cords offer a temporary solution. But for long-term use, you’ll want an electrician to rewire or add more outlets, which will safely provide you access to more power. When it comes to re-wiring, it’s important to use quality electrical tape that offers superior stretchability and adhesion for a tight seal.Switches and outlets should never feel hot. This can happen when they’re overloaded, failing, or improperly installed. If the lights dim when using a major appliance; one socket of an electrical outlet is not working; or a light switch doesn’t solidly connect in the on or off position, call an electrician immediately. If an appliance sparks, it is important to look for tell-tale signs of a larger problem. Identify when the sparks are big and lengthy, smell, or are different colors. These signs can indicate overloading, short-circuits, water damage, improper installation, or old age. Call an electrician right away if an appliance is sparking and showing these signs. It can be easy to write off flickering lights as a faulty bulb or a loose connection between a light plug and an outlet. But it can be a sign of a larger problem. Flickering lights can signal an overloaded circuit, fluctuating electrical voltage that can damage appliances, or loose, outdated wiring connections. Since these things can spark an electrical fire, it requires work that should not be completed by an amateur. Ep 227227: Home Renovations Done Right

The housing market has just exploded in the past year and usually when you buy a home there’s a lot to be done. And on top of that, a new survey by LightStream, an online lender for people with good credit found that 60% of homeowners say they wish they had more space in their current home. More than 70% say spending more time at home because of the pandemic has made them want to make upgrades. The most popular renovations being the kitchen and outdoor spaces. How to handle the process? For starters, consider the best options to pay for it all, next, factor in the unexpected -- have a reserve set aside for things you may not have planned on. Also, give yourself time when planning a project --- there’s a backlog on supplies and appliances right now due to the high demand and supply chain issues. Get references before hiring a contractor. And before you start any project, always ask your contractor for a contract that includes all costs, all deliverables, a timeline and permit process details. Also crucial, make sure your contractor is licensed and carries the right insurance. You need to be able to hold them accountable every step of the way. And be demanding up front about your needs and deadlines. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. May sound simple, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t think about it. Ep 224224: Fall Family Safety Checklist

As fall approaches many families will be visiting their pediatricians for their well-child checkups and flu shots. As part of the alliance between Duracell and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), they’ve developed a checklist to be deployed to 26,000 AAP member pediatric offices to generate awareness, help educate and encourage parents and caregivers to talk to their child’s pediatrician about unintended lithium coin battery ingestion among young children. Lithium coin batteries are the tiny flat batteries found in household items such as remote controls, candles and many other objects you may not even realize. Young children being curious by nature, may put one of these batteries in their mouth, which can be especially dangerous because a lithium coin battery is about the same diameter as a child’s esophagus. If swallowed, your child may not show any symptoms at first, but the battery can burn through the surrounding tissue in just two hours, causing serious harm. To help protect against this danger, Duracell has created coated lithium coin batteries with a non-toxic, but extremely bitter coating on the battery cell which is designed to help discourage a child from swallowing it. They also have created the power safety checklist to serve as a tool that pediatricians can share with families including tips to identify the hidden dangers in their homes and educate on how to make the environment safer. The checklist is an easy-to-share, double-sided, laminated card which parents can also easily share with caregivers. It explains what a lithium coin battery is, what it looks like and the types of devices that commonly contain lithium coin batteries. It also gives you a few simple steps you can take to help make your home safer. The checklist will also tell you what to do if you suspect that your child has ingested a lithium coin battery and it has a QR code you can scan for more information. It’s also available online at duracell.com and healthychildren.org. You can find Duracell lithium coin batteries with bitter coating at retailers nationwide - look for the bitter taste icon on the packaging. Ep 217217: Making the Most of Your Outdoor Space This Summer

Summer is here, and it's finally time to be together. Whether it's keeping unwanted pests at bay or lawn care and home maintenance tips to prevent big problems later, we've got the scoop on everything outdoors. We chatted with landscape and gardening expert Chris Lambton, who is the host of DIY and HGTV's most fab backyard shows, all about the dos and don'ts so you can keep the livin' easy this season. The idea of outdoor entertaining is so appealing right now, but everyone hates dealing with bugs. We love Hot Shot because they make an entire collection of products to get rid of crawling, flying, and stinging pests. The Hot Shot™ Ant, Roach & Spider Killer is the brand's strongest ant and roach formula, and it's their fastest knockdown ever. It kills listed bugs on contact, both indoors and outdoors, and keeps killing for up to 3 months when used as directed on non-porous surfaces. The formula leaves no oily residue and comes in both a fresh floral and lemon scent. Find it at grocery chains, The Home Depot, Walmart, and Lowe’s, or online on Amazon. Visit hotshot.com for more info. Next, check your doors and windows for cracks and get the caulking gun out to patch up any holes. Do the same for your patios and walkways. Repairing any potholes or other issues now will save a lot of expense later. If you have a deck, check it, and make sure it’s holding up from the wear and tear of winter. Of course, you can't forget your lawn! Pros know, how you mow it can make a big difference. Be sure to set the mower at the highest setting for the type of grass you’re growing. For cool-season grasses, that’s about 2½ to 3½ inches. Warm-season grasses tend to do a little better when cut a little shorter. It’s also important to mow often enough that you’re never removing more than 1/3 of the grass blade height at a time. When you mow, vary your mowing patterns so that you don’t create ruts in the lawn from mowing along the same track; that's the reason why the most pristine lawns are always crisscrossed in a pattern. And don’t overwater. It’s best to water deeply and less frequently. A good long soak is another way to encourage roots to grow deeper into the soil, which strengthens the lawn and helps it survive during a drought. When the grass has started to look a little grayish, and the blades don’t bounce back when you walk on them, it’s time to water. In the summer you might need to water about 3 times per week. If you receive a long, soaking rain, there’s no need to water that day. Also, consider using grass seed, which is like vitamins for your lawn. Summer is also the time to clean up things that get used in the winter, like cleaning gutters. Fall debris such as leaves and mud can clog the drains, and once it piles up, it can lead to leaks into the walls and roof. Clearing any possible build-up from your gutters goes a long way in lowering the risks of water damage. Also, inspect your chimney and check your central heating system if you have it.
