Today’s question(s): 🇬🇧With your wealth of knowledge and insightful visionary guidance are you confident that the current generation, in particular those associated with heritage names like Antinori, Gaja, Boffa, are interpreting philosophical and vocational practices with due respect combined with what you see as their own current day methodology in the vineyards/production and styling of wines and embracing new problems. Are we going to emerge successful while still respecting the heritage of the past without compromise? These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast. In this interview, today’s guest host covers the following learning objectives: To introduce beginners and the wine-curious to Valpolicella: Learn the basics of Valpolicella winemaking — from the native grape varieties to the characteristics of the territory and the production methods behind its various styles. To explore the world of natural wines: Discover Maddalena’s strong views on what makes a truly good natural wine, and how she brings that philosophy to life in her own winemaking. To gain an overview of Maddalena’s historic, multi-crop estate with its on-site hotel, and enjoy highlights from her fascinating personal and professional journey. More about our Co-host: James MacNay is an Italian Wine Ambassador based in the western Alps of Piemonte. Driven by curiosity and passion, Maddalena traveled across Italy and visited top wine regions around the world, learning the art of winemaking and viticulture from some of the most respected names in the field. For many years, she focused on sales and administration, while vineyard and cellar operations remained outside her scope until 2009. From the very beginning, Maddalena felt a deep desire to align Musella’s farming practices with the surrounding natural beauty. She discovered biodynamics in 2002 and, after years of study and preparation, fully converted Musella’s vineyards and winery to the biodynamic method in 2009. Today, she continues to manage the estate with growing passion and enthusiasm, producing wines that reflect both her beliefs and the unique character of Musella’s land. More about today’s guest: Born into a family of farmers, Gian Paolo was always considered the black sheep—drawn more to technology than to the land. At the age of twenty, he chose to follow his passion by founding an engineering company, leaving behind the countryside in pursuit of innovation. Starting from scratch, the company grew successfully over the years. However, the demands of international business kept him away from home for more than half the year. Twelve years ago, he made a life-changing decision: to sell the company’s operations outside of Italy and return to his roots. Together with his wife Marina, he chose to fully embrace farming once again, focusing on the winery. Guided by the motto “ancient method, modern technology,” they produce wines that honor both the environment and the people who make them—combining traditional techniques with the best of sustainable innovation. For him, the values and rhythm of rural life remain truly irreplaceable. Vigneti Repetto winery’s Colli Tortonesi DOC Timorasso Derthona Quadro 2022 won the 5StarWines – the Book 2025 Best White Wine. Currently, he serves as President of South Napa Vintners, part of Sonoma Bespoke, a producer of high-rated California wines and private labels, offering custom packaging in a certified organic facility in Napa. Barron’s diverse education spans global wine studies, business management, cultural anthropology, and an advanced German language certification earned while living in Germany during a four-year humanitarian mission with his family.
