S5 Ep 1088Ep. 1088 Michele Longari Interviews Dominic Zucchetto | Clubhouse Ambassador's Corner
Welcome to Episode 1088 Stevie Kim moderates Clubhouse’s Ambassadors Corner – In this episode Michele Longari interviews Dominic Zucchetto. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? More about Today guest moderator Michele Longari: Until 10 years ago I was working as a Computer Engineer in Emilia Romagna, Italy. Although my daily job was in a different industry, I already had a deep and rooted passion for good wine and food. In fact, I was spending most of my spare time and holidays traveling around the regions of Italy to learn more about the local cuisine and traditional wines. Since I was becoming more and more passionate about wine, I decided to start the Professional Sommelier Diploma course with the Italian Sommelier Association, with the main idea of learning something more about wine and, at that time, I was not even planning to take the final exams. Then, the more I was involved with wine and the less I wanted to be involved with computers and coding (who can blame me?!), and so I eventually ended up taking the AIS Sommelier Diploma in 2013 then, the very same year, I moved to the UK and started an MSc programme in Wine Business Management at the Royal Agricultural University. While I was finishing my Master Dissertation, I accepted a job offer from HAY WINES, a small independent British wine merchants & importers, and now after 8 years I am still working for the same company. My official role is Purchasing Director, and my main responsibilities are purchasing strategy and imports management. To learn more visit: Guest Moderator: Michele Longari Facebook: @MicheleTLongari Instagram: @micheletlongari Twitter: @MicheleTLongari LinkedIn: @micheletlongari Website: haywines.co.uk About about today’s guest producer: “Born in London but raised in Italy in a small village called Quero near Valdobbiadene, I first entered the wine world during my latter school years through harvesting in order to earn some money. This initial interest in wine making, followed by my appreciation of the finished product, convinced me to unite what I was studying at school (economics) with this new passion, and I decided that I wanted to become a sales agent, and having had the good fortune in being raised in an English speaking family, it had to be for foreign markets. Once I graduated, it was time to find a job but unfortunately it wasn't that easy, especially for the position I was looking for. So, whilst job hunting, I decided to apply for that year's harvest hoping it would be the last one! It was in this particular winery that once the harvest was over I was asked if I wanted to work full time there, unfortunately not as a sales agent but as a collaborator. This meant that I had to learn all of the jobs that one does in a winery! My adventure in this winery lasted nearly five years, after which I decided that as I had acquired all the necessary skills and knowledge, it was time for me to move on and pursue my dream job. During this transitioning time, one of my job interviews was with a business called VENEGAZZU VINI, a company that unites and distributes wines and spirits from the two small family owned wineries and one distillery. S5 Ep 1089Ep. 1089 Exploring Diversity, Confusing Optics For Inclusion | wine2wine Business Forum 2021
Welcome to Episode 1089; Exploring Diversity- Confusing optics for inclusion Welcome to Wine2Wine Business Forum 2021 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today’s session: The western world’s mainstream media outlets and wine and food industry still have a difficult time understanding that visibility does not, on its own, create an environment of diversity and inclusion (and often is simply tokenism) and the white mainstream still lack understanding of the difference between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. Only when the mainstream accepts and gives space to people of colour to create their own paths outside of the “traditional” and ensures that BIPOCs are in decision making roles with respect to the stories to be told, how they are told and who is telling them will diversity and inclusion be what it should be – which is a truer representation of society – rather than just a superficial marketing message solely for optics. About the Speakers Gurvinder Bhatia IWE Gurvinder Bhatia is the editor-in-chief and publisher for Quench Magazine – North America’s longest-running and Canada’s most widely distributed wine and food publication. Although he has written for Quench for over two decades and been on the editorial team for the past 15 years, Gurvinder purchased the magazine in 2021, and is committed to the magazine’s evolution to be a much truer representation of our society. More about today’s guest: Attilio Alfino, winemaker at Masciarelli Tenute Agricole, was born in Fossacesia in 1984. Coming from a family of vine growers for four generations, from an early age Attilio experienced firsthand the hard work of the grape harvest and the constant dedication to the vineyard, but also the satisfaction of drinking a wine produced in the vineyard on which he worked for years. He studied viticulture and oenology at the Polytechnic University of Marche and during his studies he dedicated himself to the grape harvest every year and then, once he graduated, he began traveling to gain experience around the world: from 2010 to 2012 he was in Australia, where he worked as a "flying winemaker" first on Syrah for Mclaren Vale, and then fell in love with Pinot Noir, on which he would work in several wineries in Western Australia, Burgundy and New Zealand. Meanwhile, he also began working with Masciarelli Tenute Agricole since 2011. Today Attilio is Masciarelli's oenological manager, where he is personally responsible for the vinification and aging of Masciarelli wines, coordinating the work of the technical team in collaboration with the consultant oenologist Carlo Ferrini. MASCIARELLI Tenute Agricole was founded in 1981 by the entrepreneurial intuition of Gianni Masciarelli, a symbolic figure on the Italian wine scene and a leading figure in the affirmation of modern Abruzzo winemaking. The winery has reached the milestone of forty years of activity during which it has established itself among the most prestigious realities on the Italian and international wine scene. Today it is run by Miriam Lee Masciarelli and Marina Cvetic. Based in San Martino sulla Marrucina (CH), the company produces wine, extra-virgin olive oil and other specialties; it also distributes wines from Europe's most interesting wine-producing areas in Italy through Gianni's Selection. Masciarelli stands out for its work under the banner of respect for the environment, highlighted by its EMAS certification, and the right balance between modernity and tradition. S5 Ep 1076Ep. 1076 Iris Rideau | Voices With Cynthia Chaplin
Welcome to Episode 1076 Cynthia Chaplin interviews Iris Rideau, in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. More about today’s guest: Iris Duplantier Rideau was born in the Crescent City section of New Orleans in 1936. She learned how to “pass for white” from her light-skinned grandmother. To escape the blatant racism of the South, Rideau convinced her mother to move to Los Angeles when Rideau was 12 years old. Forced to drop out of school when she became pregnant at 15, Rideau enrolled in night classes, determined not to spend her life working in dead-end jobs available to women of color. On her own, she landed a front-office job at an insurance agency. In 1967, Rideau founded her own insurance business, becoming the first minority/woman-owned firm to specialize in federally funded programs. She assisted LA’s Mayor Tom Bradley in developing the city’s first Affirmative Action Program. In the 1970s, she founded Rideau Securities and Investment Firm that specialized in pension planning for municipalities, ultimately leading to her illustrious career as California’s state director for a national pension planning company. She was awarded the city’s Deferred Compensation Plan contract, resulting in $500 million under management by the time Rideau retired in 1999. Rideau left Los Angeles to build her dream home in the Santa Ynez Valley. Nearby, she discovered an abandoned Santa Barbara Historic Monument adobe house built in 1884 sitting on 22 acres of property. Combining her love of entertaining with her business savvy— (though nothing in the winery world!)—Rideau boldly purchased the property and restored the old house. She planted the vineyards to imported Rhone vines from the south of France, built the winery, and created the award-winning Rideau Winery, one of California’s top wineries in the Santa Ynez Valley. Rideau has always given back to her communities, first Los Angeles, then the Santa Ynez Valley. As a woman-owned winery, she hired female winemakers, assistant winemakers, and tasting room staff —something unheard of in the 1990s. During her lifetime, Iris Rideau has proved that her belief in a higher power and her confidence in herself have guided her successful life’s journey—shattering those glass ceilings one by one. Rideau’s memoir, From WHITE to BLACK: One Life Between Two Worlds chronicling the events in her extraordinary life will be published on Juneteenth (June 19, 2022) in hardcover, softbound and e-book formats. To learn more visit: Website: Iris Rideau Website Instagram: Iris Rideau Facebook: Iris Rideau About today’s Host: Cynthia Chaplin is a VIA certified Italian Wine Ambassador, a professional sommelier with FIS and the WSA, a member of Le Donne del Vino, and a Professor of Italian wine and culture. Born in the USA, she’s lived in Europe since 1990. Italian wine, in particular rosé, is her passion. She works with embassies, corporations and private clients, creating and presenting tastings, events, seminars and in-depth courses. Cynthia is a wine writer, a judge at international wine and sake competitions, she consults with restaurants and enotecas developing comprehensive wine lists and food pairings, and she advises clients who want to curate an Italian wine collection. She currently works for Vinitaly International in Verona as a Project Manager, Educator, and the host of VOICES Series on The Italian Wine Podcast, focusing on diversity and inclusion in the global wine industry. S5 Ep 1066Ep. 1066 Jay Di Donato Interviews Marco Zani | Clubhouse Ambassador's Corner
Welcome to Episode 1066 in which Stevie Kim moderates Clubhouse’s Ambassadors Corner. In this episode Jay Di Donato with Marco Zani. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? About about today’s guest host: Jay Di Donato is an Italian Wine Ambassador through Vinitaly International Academy, WSET 3, and a certified Italian Wine Specialist from the North American Sommelier Association. He has worked part-time as a sommelier and at various wine retail and restaurants in Chicago and San Diego since 2016. Jay commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy in 2012. He deployed multiple times to the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, and Indian Ocean. In 2019 he earned his law degree from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law and still serves in the Navy as a Judge Advocate General, stationed in San Diego. Traveling throughout Europe with the Navy spurred his love of wine and he hopes to be stationed in Italy again soon!" To learn more visit: www.linkedin.com/in/julian-didona…/details/skills/ About today’s guest producer: Marco Zani is one of the newer additions to the Selection Massale portfolio, but he already feels very much part of the family. The family domaine was put together by his father, who bought the castle (yep, there really is one, and Marco makes his wine with in its 10th Century cellars) and surrounding vineyards, which are situated on the lower slopes of the mountains that tower either side of the little town of Rovereto. Although his father was not a vigneron (like most growers in the village, he sold each years' crop to the cooperative), Marco knew from an early age that he wanted to make wine, and since 1989, Marco has been (fanatically) tending the vineyards and making the wine at Castel Noarna, as well as helping his wife to run the best hotel/restaurant in town. The castle and the vineyards lie on east/southeast facing slopes at about 350 meters above sea level -- these are high alititude vineyards, similar to those of Belluard in the Haute-Savoie, and Knauss and Beurer in Swabia. The soils, which Marco has worked organically since 2008 are rich in minerals and poor in organic matter, and exactly what's needed for making of grands vins. Limestone, our favorite, quartz, slate, silt. If you want to learn more visit: www.selectionmassale.com/marco-zani.html More about the moderator Stevie Kim: Stevie hosts Clubhouse sessions each week (visit Italian Wine Club & Wine Business on Clubhouse), these recorded sessions are then released on the podcast to immortalize them!
