In the ’90s, she renovated the cellars and hired the help of oenologist, Franco Bernabei. He was replaced in 2000 by Gianluca Scaglione, who is still with us today and has become an integral part of our team, along with Cristiano Garella. I came back to this land a few years ago. S5 Ep 1136Ep. 1136 Peggy Baudon Interviews Francesca Accornero | Clubhouse Ambassador's Corner
Welcome to Episode 1136 Stevie Kim moderates Clubhouse’s Ambassadors Corner – In this episode Peggy Baudon interviews Francesca Accornero. These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? Guest-Moderator "I am relatively new to wine, having stumbled into it by default. I recently returned to bartending after a stretch of years teaching then followed by having two children. Bartending in the food/wine industry offered the chance to re-enter the work world in the evenings while allowing time to be with children in the day. The opportunity to work with wine again sparked a curiosity and an itch to learn more and more about it. Although I intended bartending to be a stop-gap measure of a job until I could return to full-time classroom teaching, the realization occurred that the food and wine industry is a pursuit where complete satisfaction could be gained by pouring wine and making people incredibly happy. Thoughts of starting to build a new career in wine began to percolate. When people look back on their lives, one common regret is not having done the things we wish we had. And with a window of a handful of years until I had planned to return to the teaching profession, the decision to change course and take a leap into the wine world was joyfully made.” (Peggy Baudon) To learn more visit: Instagram @peggybaudon Twitter @peggybaudon LinkedIn linkedin.com/in/peggy-baudon-dipwset-b6aa84199 About today’s guest producer: Francesca Accornero represents the 6th generation of winemakers of Accornero. Her family’s winery is located in the beautiful commune of Vignale Monferrato in the province of Alessandria, between the Tanaro River and Po River. They farm over 30 hectares of land and produce a range of wines: from Malvasia di Casorzo, Freisa, Barbera, and others which, of course include Grignolino. Francesca and her family have been very successful with this difficult grape - described as an ‘anarchist’ grape by Luigi Veronelli. Accornero’s work with Grignolino has obviously solved the puzzle of this difficult grape. Ian D’Agata describes Accornero’s Bricco del Bosco Grignolino as “a spectacular wine… that showcases the variety’s many charms. It is refined, lifted and perfumed: or in a word, beautiful. It is light on its feet but penetratingly precise… exactly what a Grignolino should be about.” To learn more visit: Facebook www.facebook.com/aziendaagricolaaccornerovini Website - www.accornerovini.it/en/rassegna-stampa/ More about the moderator Stevie Kim: Stevie hosts Clubhouse sessions each week (visit Italian Wine Club & Wine Business on Clubhouse), these recorded sessions are then released on the podcast to immortalize them! More about today’s guest: “Until 10 years ago I was working as a Computer Engineer in Emilia Romagna, Italy. Although my daily job was in a different industry, I already had a deep and rooted passion for good wine and food. In fact, I was spending most of my spare time and holidays traveling around the regions of Italy to learn more about the local cuisine and traditional wines. Since I was becoming more and more passionate about wine, I decided to start the Professional Sommelier Diploma course with the Italian Sommelier Association, with the main idea of learning something more about wine and, at that time, I was not even planning to take the final exams. Then, the more I was involved with wine and the less I wanted to be involved with computers and coding (who can blame me?!), and so I eventually ended up taking the AIS Sommelier Diploma in 2013 then, the very same year, I moved to the UK and started an MSc programme in Wine Business Management at the Royal Agricultural University. While I was finishing my Master Dissertation, I accepted a job offer from HAY WINES, a small independent British wine merchants & importers, and now after 8 years I am still working for the same company. My official role is Purchasing Director, and my main responsibilities are purchasing strategy and imports management.” To learn more visit: Facebook: @MicheleTLongari Instagram: @micheletlongari Twitter: @MicheleTLongari LinkedIn: @micheletlongari Website: haywines.co.uk More about the host Marc Millon: Marc Millon, VIA Italian Wine Ambassador 2021, has been travelling, eating, drinking, learning and writing about wine, food and travel for nearly 40 years. Today Stevie is with Giulia di Cosimo of Argillae Winery, she is the new Vice-President of the Orvieto Consortium. Together they discuss “Benvenuto Orvieto” a day of events that introduces the new Vintages as well as a masterclass on Orvieto DOC. More about “Benvenuto Orvieto”: The location (the Mancinelli theatre, in the city center), for the “ Benvenuto Orvieto 2022 ” event was chosen by the Orvieto Wine Consortium It was an intense day, made up of territory, history and tastings. The day started in the theater with the presentation of the Consortium and its objectives. A DOC created in 1971; today it has 1956 hectares of vineyards and a production of 11 million bottles . It is a wine-growing area that starts in the north from the parts of Fabro and extends towards the province of Terni, even encroaching into Lazio. On the other hand, the area relating to the “Orvieto Classico ” appellation is more restricted . The day had a full program of events and promotional activities and included an experimental program with the University of Tuscia that began with a study on the four terroirs of Orvieto, volcanic, clayey, sandy, alluvial. Four terroirs that were the subject of the first tasting, with an “anonymous” label which took place in the Theater. To complete the day, there was an interesting speech by Prof. Attilio Scienza on the close relationship between the evolution of viticulture and the Via Francigena and, finally, on the potential of the “sweet wines ” of Orvieto; also because the presence of “noble rot” in the Orvieto area could be thought of as a real icing on the cake…. He focused on vinification in steel, imports winemaking skills from Piedmont and carefully selects the best grapes. He is among the firsts to have adopted the “amphora” bottle, icon of the denomination. With the brand Castelfiora, which he produces in the newly built winery in Staffolo (1972), he has writen an important chapter in the history of the denomination. In the 90s, his daughter Fulvia Tombolini extended the (Verdicchio) vineyard to 30 hectares and started their journey towards sustainable viticulture. In 2013, the call of the land became irresistible for Carlo Paoloni, son of Fulvia, who quit his job in investment banking in London to devote himself to the family business. With the 2020 vintage, he launched a project focused on exalting the unique terroir of Staffolo and experimenting with new winemaking techniques. Symbol of the new course is the Tombolini "100 years" amphora, a proprietary bottle created to contain only the best Verdicchios from the Tombolini estate. S5 Ep 1100Ep. 1100 Nicole Rolet | Uncorked
Welcome to episode 1100, in which host Polly Hammond interviews Nicole Rolet, this week on Uncorked. This week, we are joined by the lovely and talented Nicole Rolet, CEO and driving force behind Chene Bleu. We forego wine-talk and instead jump directly into the blood, sweat, and tears of building a modern luxury brand. From solving spreadsheets and finding the right partners, to acting strategically and overcoming fear of rejection, we’re talking about the non-obvious demands (and rewards!) of our industry. Let’s get into it. More about today’s guest: Nicole Rolet Nicole left her career in International finance and David Rockefeller’s geopolitical think tanks, to join her husband Xavier and his family in the Rhone to restore a historical vineyard, derelict but magnificently wild, and its abandoned Medieval prior – a hidden gem in the heart of a UNESCO biosphere. Increasingly convinced of the site’s exciting potential to produce Grand Cru-quality wine, she studied at WSET then UC Davis, and called upon her inner entrepreneur to transform this medieval Sleeping Beauty into a cutting-edge wine estate. Chêne Bleu wines were launched in 2010 to critical acclaim. She remains deeply committed to reconciling business success, social responsibility, ethical and sustainable practices, pushing the boundaries of sustainability. Knighted as Chevalier de Tastevin in Burgundy and the Echansonnerie in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, she co-founded the International Grenache Symposium and Association in 2010, then a wine school, and founded FM4FW in 2017. She splits her time between Barcelona, Auckland, and Napa, consulting, writing, and speaking about the trends that impact today’s wine businesses. She’s an advisor to New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, host of Uncorked with the Italian Wine Podcast, cohost of the Real Business of Wine with Robert Joseph, and, occasionally, a knitter. Polly is a graduate of the University of Southern California, where she earned degrees in International Relations and French. Those studies led to a deep and abiding love affair with behavioral Economics, and her wine work is based on insights into all the crazy and irrational reasons consumers engage with brands. With over 20 years’ experience in growing successful companies, Polly knows first-hand the challenges faced by independent businesses. He is an Italian Wine Ambassador and also has WSET Level 3. To learn more visit: Twitter @matt_paice LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/matt-paice-6bb4ba2 About about today’s guest producer: Giovanni Pesquera-Elia Giovanni Pesquero-Elia was born on June 1959, and was raised on a farm in Serraboella – Neive. He started to work in the fields following in his parents footsteps. In 1972 he started to learn the winemaking process, while studying at the Oenological School Umberto I of Alba. After 6 years he became an Oenologist, showing specific talent in the field of chemistry. For many years he spent time in the cellar winemaking, following traditional rules. After his brother Silvano joined the company a few years later, the two started managing the cellar together. A pivotal shift for Giovanni’s career came with his meeting of Thomas Abruzzini, considered the American Veronelli, given his incredible nose and understanding of the dynamics of winemaking in Europe and markets in United States. He was one of the first people to import and trust Piemonte. He thought it to be a wine area in Italy with the greater potential to compete with the wines he was previously importing into the USA: Bourgogne and Bordeaux. Tom brought Giovanni to the States and helped him to learn about their much more complex and sophisticated market for wine. At the time the US was not well acquainted with the world of Italian wines. But he also let Giovanni and his family learn techniques used in many other wineries across the world, opening the eyes to more sophisticated winemaking styles. This relationship brought their wines to the US, after many years (50) of absence. In this way, Giovanni started to follow the markets too, steering away from the predominant domestic market and expanding worldwide. A future encounter with Marco De Grazia, famous for having started the revolution of the Langhe with the Barolo Boys, led to a further step in learning and the expansion of the winery. Now like every member of the family, Giovanni is in charge of supervising the farming, winemaking decisions and established markets.
