S6 Ep 1445Ep. 1445 Francesca Seralvo | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1445 in which Marc Millon interviews Francesca Seralvo in today’s episode of Wine, Food & Travel More about today’s winery: The story of the Mazzolino Tenuta began about forty years ago with Francesca’s grandfather Enrico when, on one of his travels, was seduced by an area that everyone already called "the Pinot Noir hill." Two of his great friends, Luigi Veronelli and Giacomo Bologna helped him to embark on this journey; they noticed right away the potential of the white, chalky lands surrounding the winery, land that the French had discovered had a vocation for Pinot Noir back in the mid-19th century, when it was still "Old Piedmont." They began from the very beginning to get the rootstocks and the best wood for aging directly from Bourgogne. In the meantime, Francesca’s mother, Sandra, had thrown herself in with her usual determination, running the winery and never missed an opportunity to take Francesca with her to Mazzolino. She couldn't wait to leave because she knew she would spend whole days among the vineyards, the roses in the garden, the animals in the yard, including the ducks, chickens, donkeys and horses. In 2015 Francesca began to write a new history for the Tenuta implementing it with all the teachings she received from her grandfather and enriching it with innovation and creativity. The desire to learn and her tenacity were decisive. The winery has been approaching organic farming for a long time now, they respect nature to reap the fruit of what they have been growing every day. Unknowingly, she began her wine career in her cousin's restaurant in their hometown of Oakland, California. In 2012 she moved to New York City and continued her restaurant career at Lupa Osteria Romana in Greenwich Village. In 2016 she accepted the Wine Director position and in 2018, took on the dual role of General Manager/Wine Director. Emilia's love to learn, combined with her interest in discovering her Sicilian roots, led her to take a profound interest in southern Italian wines. In 2016 she passed the rigorous Vinitaly International Wine Ambassador exam which only led her further down the rabbit hole. In 2018 she embarked on a grape harvest adventure on Mt. Etna, Sicily, where she worked with Ciro' and Stef Biondi. Since then, she frequently travels to the region and in 2021 made the first accurate and publicly accessible map of the Etna DOC wine region. After a pandemic harvest in Ciro', Calabria with Francesco and Laura De Franco of 'A Vita, Emilia began her current business endeavor, Cittavino & Co.- an online wine company dedicated to the study and promotion of lesser known southern Italian wine regions. She speaks Italian fluently and travels to Italy regularly, as working with producers, walking their vineyards and cellars, has become fundamental to her documentation of the rich viticultural history of the South. Her choice to focus on smaller producers is based on her belief that wine is food and that farm work should be respected, revered, and earn a livable wage. Emilia is constantly in awe and in search of the intersectionality of cultures. She is so excited to share the cosmopolitan history of southern Italy with you! These sessions are recorded from Clubhouse and replayed here on the Italian Wine Podcast! Listen in on this series as Italian Wine Ambassadors all over the world chat with Stevie and their chosen wine producer. Which producer would you interview if you had your pick? Co-Moderator - Michele Longari: “Until 10 years ago I was working as a Computer Engineer in Emilia Romagna, Italy. Although my daily job was in a different industry, I already had a deep and rooted passion for good wine and food. In fact, I was spending most of my spare time and holidays traveling around the regions of Italy to learn more about the local cuisine and traditional wines. Since I was becoming more and more passionate about wine, I decided to start the Professional Sommelier Diploma course with the Italian Sommelier Association, with the main idea of learning something more about wine and, at that time, I was not even planning to take the final exams. Then, the more I was involved with wine and the less I wanted to be involved with computers and coding (who can blame me?!), and so I eventually ended up taking the AIS Sommelier Diploma in 2013 then, the very same year, I moved to the UK and started an MSc programme in Wine Business Management at the Royal Agricultural University. While I was finishing my Master Dissertation, I accepted a job offer from HAY WINES, a small independent British wine merchants & importers, and now after 8 years I am still working for the same company. My official role is Purchasing Director, and my main responsibilities are purchasing strategy and imports management.” To learn more visit: Facebook: @MicheleTLongari Instagram: @micheletlongari Twitter: @MicheleTLongari LinkedIn: @micheletlongari Website: haywines.co.uk Guest Bio – Giulia Pedrini Giulia has been part of the magical world of wine since she was a little girl, when she was playing with her dolls in the cellar while her dad was making wine. She never considered doing anything else in her life rather than working in the wine industry, and we could say she was literally born to do this job! She is a wine professional ‘ultimate level’ as after she graduated ‘enotecnico’ at the istituto agrario of San Michele, she went off to London where she studied and eventually got the WSET diploma. Once back in Trentino she realised that, if she really wanted to make a difference in their family business, she had to fill some gaps of knowledge in management and marketing, therefore she went back to Uni and took a degree in Business Management. Currently, she is mainly taking care of the commercial side of the business, but during the harvest she is also helping in production. S6 Ep 1415Ep. 1415 Federico Giuntini | Wine Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1415 in which Marc Millon interviews Federico Giuntini of Fattoria Selvapiana in today’s episode of Wine, Food & Travel More about today’s guests: Selvapiana was created in the Middle Ages as a watchtower and defense of the city of Florence to the north, along the valley of the river Sieve. Transformed into a villa, during the Renaissance it was the summer residence of noble Florentine families and the bishops of Florence. It was purchased in 1826 by Michele Giuntini, a successful Florentine banker and ancestor of the current owner Francesco Giuntini, who led the company from 1957 to 1997. Having always understood the value of the Chianti Rufina area, with stubborn passion he has lavished great energy in its valorisation. Francesco was among the first in Tuscany to produce wine from Sangiovese grapes alone and to link the company's flagship wine to a specific single vineyard: Bucerchiale. In 1979 he produced the first vintage of Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigneto Bucerchiale. In 1978, he was the first to place his trust in Franco Bernabei, an internationally renowned wine consultant, realizing his great abilities. Today the property is managed by Silvia and Federico, children of Franco Masseti, farmer in Selvapiana from 1953 to 1990. Silvia and Federico were adopted by Francesco in 1994 to give continuity to their work. Selvapiana currently has an extension of about 250 hectares of which 58 hectares of vineyards, 36 hectares of olive groves and 140 of woods.
