Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery: Grandfather Ferruccio was a miller, but his real passion was farming, especially winegrowing. In 1957 he bought the house and the vineyard in the Rocca Bernarda hills, initially focusing on the production of the Friuli white then called Tocai, a wine that goes perfectly with whatever you're eating. We know all this from the stories told by Ferruccio's son Arturo, who took part in that move along with the rest of the family, uprooting from the little town of Vencò, where the mill was located, and settling in what is now the Corno di Rosazzo wine estate. During the 1980s it was Arturo's son, Adriano, who took over the winery, choosing a peacock as a symbol of the winery, and launching the first bottles on the market. Today, the winery is headed by Adriano and his wife Giuliana, along with his cousin Ariedo, who joined the company as wine technician. The Next Generation where Victoria Cece interviews young Italian wine people shaking up the wine scene. More about the winery Our wines are made completely from the grapes produced in our own vineyards, of which, for the most part, are old dry grown Primitivo bush vines on terra rossa. They are cultivated by hand using bio-dynamic principles and the yield rarely exceeds 2 tonnes (2.6 hl) per hectare. Primitivo Old Vines & Primitivo La Signora come from the oldest bush vines. They are testimony to the biodiversity in this area, due mainly to the survival of the old vines, children of the traditional "massali" selection in vineyards practiced over many years. Today we are bringing you a throwback (the first of several to come) to Stevie’s conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Ayana Misawa More about today’s winery Japan has four seasons that transition seamlessly and vividly. The sensitivity to delicate flavours and careful, robust techniques cultivated under the Japanese cultural climate have become characteristics of Japanese culture. Grace Wine aims to pick out Japan's best and embrace it in its wines. We select vineyards based on the amount of sunlight, diurnal temperature differences, drainage, wind flow, and other factors, and our grape growing has been devised in constant dialogue with natural conditions. Harvesting is done by hand with careful and thorough grape selection. The winery strives to bring out the full potential of the grapes nurtured in the vineyards. By weaving together years of effort, the family business has been carrying on for almost a century. Japanese winemaking is intimately linked to local agriculture, and Japanese handicrafts are honest, thorough and solid. In 2014, Grace's white wine Koshu opened the doors to the world, and we will continue to bring pleasure and soothe to people by promoting winemaking that expresses the best of Japan. Welcome to Episode 1559; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview is between Cynthia Chaplin and Luca Avenanti from Cantina Terracruda in Marche Stevie Kim and her team travelled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon! Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery: Terracruda is the result of the vision and commitment of our family, who decided to enhance the native vines, authentic guardians of the identity and uniqueness of the Marche region. We are proud to cultivate, on an area of over 15 hectares, unique varieties such as the DOC Bianchello del Metauro, the timeless Sangiovese and the rare Aleatico di Pergola as well as ancient local varieties saved from oblivion thanks to the foresight of our winemaker Giancarlo Soverchia with whom since 2004 the Incrocio Bruni 54 and the Garofanata have been recovered. Our vineyards are cultivated following the principles of organic farming and each grape is selected and harvested by hand with care and respect for nature. As an organic winery we bottle our wines at origin. As winemakers, with the help of the family and our collaborators, every day we cultivate the vineyard, make wine in our cellar and finally bottle organic wines at origin. Imagine a land where the green of the hills is more intense, where thoughts and gazes are lost in the infinite landscape, between the high mountains and the calm sea. It is in this land full of magic that Terracruda, a winery in Fratte Rosa, has its roots. A small village perched on the top of a hill, on the border between the provinces of Pesaro Urbino and Ancona , in that region in the plural, the Marche, a region of extraordinary beauty and landscape variety that never ceases to amaze the visitor. I cultivate typical Abruzzo’s vines such as Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Pecorino, and international vine such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. S6 Ep 1549Ep. 1549 Gianfelice D’Alfonso | Slow Wine 2023
Welcome to Episode 1549; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview is between Cynthia Chaplin and Gianfelice d’Alfonso of d’Alfonso del Sordo Cellars Stevie Kim and her team travelled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon! Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery The D’Alfonso del Sordo’s vine growing and wine producing family tradition dates back to 1800, when some members of the family, enthusiastic farmers, began to cultivate vines in the family estates located in San Severo countryside: The baron Antonio Del Sordo, who had intended part of his estates located in San Severo and Lucera to vine growing, and Ludovico D’Alfonso, passionate vine grower, who already chose the best grapes from his vines at that time and vinified them in the basement of his house. In 1933, the management of the winery went to Gianfelice D’Alfonso Del Sordo, who, along with his wife Celeste, keeps on investing resources and energies in D’Alfonso Del Sordo’s wines promotion on various foreign markets, where the brand was not present yet. Furthermore, thanks to the cooperation of highly-qualified oenologists like Severino Garofano and Luigi Moio, he improves the quality of the wines produced by the company and begins the promotion of two important “native ” varietals of the northern Apulia: “Bombino Bianco” and “Nero di Troia”. In addition, aware of the efforts that his father had faced to find a particular clone of this vine in the late 1970s, in February 2002 he concludes a convention with the University of Foggia in order to encourage scholars of the Faculty of Agriculture to evaluate and study the potentialities of Nero di Troia. An intuition that will prove to be successful given that, from the first single-variety winemakings of Uva di Troia or Nero di Troia, nowadays many wineries have decided to dedicate one or more wines to this variety. S6 Ep 1538Ep. 1538 What Is Wine Communication? | wine2wine Business Forum 2022
Welcome to Episode 1538, What is wine communication in 2022? with Robert Joseph, moderated by Stevie Kim This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today’ session: In 2002, like wine producers, book publishers and authors largely relied heavily on traditional critics and reviewers. Today, they also have TikTok, Instagram and peer reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. The #Booktok tag has been used over 39,000,000,000 times. TikTok influencers are now becoming more important to book publishing than most classic reviewers. Barnes & Nobles shops in the US now have BookTok shelves. Top Instagram book influencers, @everlastingcharm, @myfriendsarefiction and @hayaisreading all have over 100,000 followers, far more potential book buyers than are ever likely to read a traditional newspaper review. Wine in China has adopted this shift more rapidly than in the west. Wang Shenghan, aka Lady Penguin, a 33-year-old leading wine influencer, has built an e-commerce platform with revenues of over $35m. But it is not just influencers. A Vivino marketing campaign can be more cost effective today than promoting a Wine Spectator score. Many in the industry are uncomfortable with these trends, but ignoring them may be a mistake. Former award-winning author and critic and now industry analyst, Robert Joseph, takes a level-headed look at the rapid way wine communication is changing, reveals the findings from new research, and ways many producers may need to adapt. More about today’s speaker: Robert Joseph Robert is a wine business consultant and an editorial consultant for Meininger’s Wine Business International, which he helped to launch in 2006. In 1983, after living in Burgundy for five years, he launched Wine International magazine; set up the International Wine Challenge; became wine writer for the Sunday Telegraph and wrote The Wine Lists, the first of his 25 books. He has chaired and launched over 50 wine competitions in Asia, Europe and the UK. Robert has been in Who’s Who since 2013, and awards he has received include the Jacob’s Creek ‘Golden Vine’; ‘the Best Wine Guide in the World’; the Glenfiddich (twice); The Wine Guild of the United Kingdom Premier; the Marques de Caceres. He regularly appears on television and radio, and has lectured at the Wine & Spirits Educational Trust, Burgundy and Sonoma Wine Business Schools. Joseph is one of the trio behind Hugh Kevin & Robert Wines whose le Grand Noir range now sell over 3.8m bottles per year in over 60 countries. Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery Innovators of Vernaccia di San Gimignano since 1989: We are guided, with great determination and without compromise, by essentially two inseparable guidelines: identity – and therefore typicality – and quality. Our Mission is creating terroir driven wines of great evolutionary skill. More than 40 years have passed since, in 1979, Giovanni Panizzi purchased the Santa Margherita farm just outside the ancient walls of San Gimignano. There were a few hectares of vineyards in place, with which Giovanni, almost as if playing, started to make wine, with passion and his own style. «Becoming the author of my life - Giovanni said - I emigrated to these Sienese lands with the desire, above all, to find out what my best part was that would certainly come out if I came into contact with a rural environment like this, imbued with the scent of the countryside and the smell of wine and the smell of violets born in March at the foot of cypresses, convincing me that at 50 I still had to invent a new life ».
