S6 Ep 1538Ep. 1538 What Is Wine Communication? | wine2wine Business Forum 2022
Welcome to Episode 1538, What is wine communication in 2022? with Robert Joseph, moderated by Stevie Kim This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business forum, held annually in Verona Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals eager to develop and grow their wine business worldwide. About today’ session: In 2002, like wine producers, book publishers and authors largely relied heavily on traditional critics and reviewers. Today, they also have TikTok, Instagram and peer reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. The #Booktok tag has been used over 39,000,000,000 times. TikTok influencers are now becoming more important to book publishing than most classic reviewers. Barnes & Nobles shops in the US now have BookTok shelves. Top Instagram book influencers, @everlastingcharm, @myfriendsarefiction and @hayaisreading all have over 100,000 followers, far more potential book buyers than are ever likely to read a traditional newspaper review. Wine in China has adopted this shift more rapidly than in the west. Wang Shenghan, aka Lady Penguin, a 33-year-old leading wine influencer, has built an e-commerce platform with revenues of over $35m. But it is not just influencers. A Vivino marketing campaign can be more cost effective today than promoting a Wine Spectator score. Many in the industry are uncomfortable with these trends, but ignoring them may be a mistake. Former award-winning author and critic and now industry analyst, Robert Joseph, takes a level-headed look at the rapid way wine communication is changing, reveals the findings from new research, and ways many producers may need to adapt. More about today’s speaker: Robert Joseph Robert is a wine business consultant and an editorial consultant for Meininger’s Wine Business International, which he helped to launch in 2006. In 1983, after living in Burgundy for five years, he launched Wine International magazine; set up the International Wine Challenge; became wine writer for the Sunday Telegraph and wrote The Wine Lists, the first of his 25 books. He has chaired and launched over 50 wine competitions in Asia, Europe and the UK. Robert has been in Who’s Who since 2013, and awards he has received include the Jacob’s Creek ‘Golden Vine’; ‘the Best Wine Guide in the World’; the Glenfiddich (twice); The Wine Guild of the United Kingdom Premier; the Marques de Caceres. He regularly appears on television and radio, and has lectured at the Wine & Spirits Educational Trust, Burgundy and Sonoma Wine Business Schools. Joseph is one of the trio behind Hugh Kevin & Robert Wines whose le Grand Noir range now sell over 3.8m bottles per year in over 60 countries. Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery Innovators of Vernaccia di San Gimignano since 1989: We are guided, with great determination and without compromise, by essentially two inseparable guidelines: identity – and therefore typicality – and quality. Our Mission is creating terroir driven wines of great evolutionary skill. More than 40 years have passed since, in 1979, Giovanni Panizzi purchased the Santa Margherita farm just outside the ancient walls of San Gimignano. There were a few hectares of vineyards in place, with which Giovanni, almost as if playing, started to make wine, with passion and his own style. «Becoming the author of my life - Giovanni said - I emigrated to these Sienese lands with the desire, above all, to find out what my best part was that would certainly come out if I came into contact with a rural environment like this, imbued with the scent of the countryside and the smell of wine and the smell of violets born in March at the foot of cypresses, convincing me that at 50 I still had to invent a new life ». S6 Ep 1520Ep. 1520 Valentina Argiolas | On The Road With Stevie Kim Throwback Instalive
Welcome to Episode 1520 on another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today we are bringing you a throwback to Stevie’s conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Valentina Argiolas More about today’s guest Valentina was born in 1977, in a family of wine growers of Serdiana, in the countryside of southern Sardinia near Cagliari. From a very early age she was involved in the winery’s life, playing among the wine barrels and the crates of harvested grapes, and witnessing for more than thirty years the history of her family’s business. The winery was founded by Antonio Argiolas, her paternal grandfather and the family’s patriarch, who even after handing the business over to his children remained its bedrock until the ripe old age of 103. Valentina, who holds a degree in Business Studies, handles the winery’s marketing and public relations. Her role is to spread the word about the Argiolas wines, share her family’s history, and tell the story about the land and the dedication that goes into crafting the family’s wines. The winery focuses on Sardinia’s traditional and native grape varieties, including those lesser known outside the island, such as Nuragus, Monica, Bovale and Nasco, and this requires dedication to promoting their unique qualities. Valentina has two small children and so, as all working mothers with a demanding position, she has become adept at running a busy schedule and making sure everything fits together smoothly. She hopes that her children will inherit from Antonio both vision and passion. One thing is certain, however, and that is her children will soon be playing hide and seek among the great wine barrels that once belonged to her beloved grandfather. S6 Ep 1518Ep. 1518 Enrico Drei Donà | Slow Wine 2023
Welcome to Episode 1518; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview is between Joy Livingston and Enrico Drei Donà Stevie Kim and her team travelled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon! Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery Tenuta La Palazza stands on the ancient hills of Romagna between the cities of Forlì, Castrocaro and Predappio in a strategic position at the mouth of the valleys of the Rabbi and Montone rivers, around one of the watchtowers that Caterina Sforza placed in 1481 to defend her territories. The estate has belonged to the Drei Donà counts since the 1920s, and has always been dedicated to the production of Sangiovese grapes. In 1980 Claudio Drei Donà abandoned his legal practice to devote himself full time to the company, later followed by his son Enrico, and began a radical work of change which gave a decisive change to the property. Of the 23 hectares of vineyards, most of it is naturally dedicated to Sangiovese, whose old plants were the subject of a particular study and selection which then led to their restoration through the replanting of the Palazza mass selection. Alongside these, in the mid-1980s Claudio Drei Donà planted – a true pioneer – the first polyclonal vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon in Romagna and a vineyard with Chardonnay and Riesling. S6 Ep 1510Ep. 1510 Dorli Muhr | On The Road With Stevie Kim Throwback Instalive
Welcome to Episode 1510 on another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today we are bringing you a throwback (the first of several to come) to Stevie’s conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Dorli Muhr. More about today’s guest Dorli Muhr – who discovered her enthusiasm for wine during university studies training as an interpreter (French & Spanish) – founded an agency for marketing and PR work in 1991 called Wine&Partners and developed a highly specialised business for communications involving wine, gourmet products and the culinary world. The desire to have her own wine production – which burned in the blood of farmers’ daughter Dorli – led ultimately to her replanting the fallow parcels on the Spitzerberg in 1995. Together with her then-husband Dirk van der Niepoort, Dorli Muhr recommenced wine production in 2002. Seeking perfection and maximum finesse, she began to acquire other parcels of vines to complement the family patch, so that the Weingut Muhr-van der Niepoort grew continually each year, in both quantity and quality. Ten years after Muhr and Niepoort ended their marriage, they finally concluded their business relationship. Dorli Muhr took over Dirk Niepoort’s holdings, and is carrying on with the estate under her name alone. At the same time, she was able to acquire a small, old house in Prellenkirchen and move her business headquarters there. Together with her daughter Anna, she is returning to the same village where Anna’s great-grandmother spent her childhood and teenage years. S6 Ep 1497Ep. 1497 The Blind Guy's Guide To Blind Tasting | wine2wine Business Forum 2022
Welcome to Episode 1497, the Blind Guy’s Guide to Blind Tasting with Hoby Wedler, moderated by Dominga Cotarella This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. About today’ session: We use all five senses to take in 100% of the information we experience in life. Eyesight comprises 85-90% of this information. Why? We will discuss and attempt to answer this question during this session. Sensory literacy is the ability to be able to take in data from all five senses, parse that data, and make logical conclusions. We will explore sensory literacy. Wine is a beverage that we all think we know and love. But when have we had the opportunity to taste wine without eyesight? In this educational and entertaining presentation, Dr. Hoby Wedler, Wine Educator and Ph.D. chemist, will walk participants through how wine is a near perfect example of the intersection of art and science. When we think about art and science, we tend to separate them into separate buckets in our minds. However, they are extraordinarily similar and have an exceptionally fine intersection between them. Wine straddles this introduction brilliantly and this presentation will explore this concept along with many more by considering both scientific and artistic aspects of grape growing, wine making, and wine tasting. Guests will be blindfolded and asked to prime their aromatic vocabularies with a series of aroma samples prepared by Hoby and his team. These aroma samples define olfactory vocabulary words, much like a dictionary provides definitions to words in written and spoken language. The experience will conclude with a tasting of four wines where we will smell, taste, and analyze the four wines in detail as a group. More about today’s speaker: Dr. Hoby Wedler is an insightful, disarming, and passionate thinker who loves to bring people together to help them see new possibilities. With the heart of a teacher, Hoby helps turn dreams into realities. Hoby has been completely blind since birth. He is a chemist, an entrepreneur, a sensory expert, and is driven by his passion for innovative, creative, and insightful thinking. Hoby is remarkably tuned into his surroundings and has frequently chosen to walk the unbeaten paths in life over known territories. In 2016, Hoby earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UC Davis. In 2011, Hoby founded a non-profit organization to lead annual chemistry camps for blind and visually impaired students throughout North America. In the same year, he began opening doors to the world of wine aromas by developing Tasting in the Dark, a truly blindfolded wine experience, in collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola. He has since expanded the program to a global market in a variety of industries and special projects. Hoby uses his highly-trained palate and acute sensory insight of his surroundings in his work as a sensory expert and product development consultant. Over the years, Hoby has become a motivational speaker, a mentor, and an educator committed to making the world more inclusive and accessible for all. Forbes Media named Hoby as a leader in food and drink in their 30 under 30 annual publication. In 2021, Hoby was named a 40 under 40 Tastemaker by The Wine Enthusiast. Hoby is dedicated to impacting everyone he works with by unlocking doors, overcoming challenges, increasing awareness, and expanding their horizons.
