S7 Ep 1721Ep. 1721 Ciao Massican The Italian Wine Grape Revolution |wine2wine Busines Forum 2023 Series

Welcome to Episode 1721 on Italian Wine Podcast, Masterclass US Wine Market With Juliana Colangelo. Today she moderates a wine2wine Business Forum 2023 session entitled “Ciao, Massican: The Italian wine grape revolution in America (or California)” with Dan Petroski Abstract: Americans’ fascination with Italian culture stems from a blend of historical, culinary, and artistic ties. Significant Italian immigration to the U.S. has forged deep-rooted communities that celebrate their rich heritage. Italian cuisine, emphasizing essential, fresh ingredients and communal dining, resonates universally, as the “la dolce vita” lifestyle beckons many. Through films, literature, and travel, Italy’s blend of history, culture, and natural beauty continues to captivate Americans. The term “Cal-Ital” refers to California wines made from Italian grape varieties. It’s a playful combination of “California” and “Italian.” The term has been used to describe the wave of interest in planting and producing wines from Italian grape varieties in California. The term gained popularity in wine circles in the 1990s and early 2000s. During this period, winemakers experimented with small batches to bottle a multitude of grape varieties, but one variety, Pinot Grigio, came out on top. During this session, Dan Petroski will talk about the trajectory of the Massican label - from its inception to its recent (September 2023) sale to Gallo - and how the brand embodies the Cal-Ital spirit. More about Dan Petroski: A decade into his publishing career at Time Inc., Dan Petroski took a moment to reflect and he jettisoned to Italy for a year. While Petroski's intention was to return to New York, a harvest invitation in 2006 to come to California was too good to pass up. After harvest, Petroski was hired at Napa's Larkmead as cellar master, ultimately claiming the winemaker title in 2012. Petroski spent nearly 15 years at Larkmead, cementing his status as a top-tier Napa Valley Cabernet winemaker; during that period Petroski launched a white wine only brand called Massican, an ode to the Mediterranean and Petroski's time spent living in Italy and drinking white wine. Petroski's approach and ability to craft wines as diverse as Cabernet Sauvignon and Tocai Friulano has earned him perfect 100-point scores, Top 100 wines, recognition as San Francisco Chronicle's Winemaker of the Year in 2017 and Food & Wine magazine's Drinks Innovator of the Year in 2022. Connect: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danpetroski/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/danpetroski/?hl=en More about Juliana Colangelo: Juliana Colangelo is a Vice President at Colangelo & Partners, the leading wine and spirits communications agency in the U.S. Juliana joined Colangelo & Partners in 2013 with previous experience in events, hospitality, and nonprofit development. During her tenure at C&P, Juliana has led the development of the California office, growing the agency’s domestic presence to a dedicated office of 13 people with representation of leading wine companies such as Jackson Family Wines, Far Niente, Charles Krug Winery, Foley Family Wines and more. Juliana has completed her WSET Level 3 and her eMBA in Wine Business with Sonoma State University, allowing her to bring a strategic and sales-oriented approach to communications strategy for the agency. In 2021, Juliana was named one of PR News’ Top Women in PR in the “Rising Stars” category. In 2022 Juliana became a Vinitaly International Academy Italian Wine Ambassador. About today’s Host: “In 2013, a wine guru walked into my life, and I set off on a path of demystifying the wines of Europe–a section of stores and wine lists that I previously avoided. This path rewarded me with an understanding of what wine really is…a centerpiece of gatherings with families and friends; something to facilitate celebration. When visiting family wineries in Europe, I found the experience to be like an invitation to a family gathering, and I admired the passion of the winemakers for their craft. I launched Wide Roots to bring the essence of this experience to more wine drinkers, hoping to help them in unlocking this world much the same way that I did for myself. I am certified by Vinitaly International Academy as an Italian Wine Ambassador. I am also the subject of Wine Hunter, a documentary that follows my journey launching Wide Roots and my travels through the vineyards of Italy.” Connect: Website: www.widerootsllc.com/wide-roots-llc/ Youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnO0yzn91YA LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/russlorber/ _______________________________ Let's keep in touch! S6 Ep 1719Ep. 1719 Victoria Cece Interviews Matteo Marenda Of Sesta Di Sopra | The Next Generation

Welcome to Episode 1719 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Matteo Marenda of Sesta di Sopra this week on The Next Generation where young Italian wine people 30 and under shake up the wine scene. More about today’s winery Sesta di Sopra is an estate of 44 hectares located south of Montalcino, 4 km from Castelnuovo dell'Abate. It was purchased in 1980. After restoring the farmhouse, almost certainly an ancient watchtower, two hectares of olive groves were recovered, followed by the planting of a first vineyard and then a second for a total of 2.8 hectares. The farm has a favourable position for soil composition and microclimate. Careful family management has given particular importance to the planting of the vineyards, in order to follow the most modern viticultural techniques. The vineyards, planted in the early 1990s with a selection of Sangiovese Grosso clones, are trained (spurred cordon system) on medium-textured soils, tending to be calcareous, which give reduced vigour to the plants with low production yields and high-quality grapes. The company owns about 4 hectares of vineyards. The oldest vineyard, from which we produce the Brunello, is 29 years old, while the remaining part has an average age of 10 years. Connect: Website: www.sestadisopra.it/ More about the host: Victoria Cece is a food and beverage storyteller whose curiosity is somewhere deep in a bowl of pasta or a bottle of wine. A fool for history, you can find her reading up about ancient grape varietals or wandering around a little Italian town eating everything in sight, under her alias Slutti Spaghetti. More about today’s winery: 1924 - The Zamò family opened Osteria di Manzano, managed by Luigi, father of Tullio and grandfather of Pierluigi and Silvano 1978 - The start of the adventure of Le Vigne di Zamò. Tullio Zamò purchased five hectares of vineyard on Rocca Bernarda hill, and founded the Vigna del Leon estate. 2010 - Oscar Farinetti entered into partnership and, along with Pierluigi and Silvano, the decision was made to continue the work undertaken by Tullio, inspired by a passion for this land and an ancestral love of wine, with the aim of maintaining the family nature of the estate. 2021 - Making wine is a sign of civilisation and it strengthens the link between man and his land, his origins and tradition. By embracing this production philosophy, we manage our vineyards using natural methods, natural fertilisers like manure and humus, and keeping grass growth down mechanically. This approach led us to celebrate the first Certified ORGANIC harvest in 2021. Connect: Website: www.levignedizamo.wine/ _______________________________ Let's keep in touch! Ep. 1714 Raffaele Foglia Of Villa Bogdano | wine2wine Business Forum 2023

Welcome to Episode 1714, where Cynthia Chaplin interviews Italian wine producers during the wine2wine Business Forum 2023 Podcast Marathon. Today she interviews Raffaele Foglia of Villa Bogdano 1880 featuring the wine - Lison Classico Docg 2019 Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. More about today’s winery: Tenuta Planitia is an historic agricultural and viticultural estate, producing wines under the name Villa Bogdano 1880. It has been certified organic since 1993 and is a Natura 2000 Biodiversity Conservation Site, hosting 14 protected species within its planitial woodland, an ancient and delicate habitat dating back to 1200 that we have committed to preserve and support, hence the name “Planitia”. Within the estate you will be in the company of birds of prey, green woodpeckers, herons, tritons, frogs, and the”Bombina Variegata“, a striking yellow-bellied toad with some strange habits! The estate is a peculiar viticultural treasure. There are 106 hectares of vineyards, 18 of which are historic, having over 50 years of age, with the oldest having been planted approximately 100 years ago. The first vineyard, 117 original vines which have been painstakingly restored, was planted using an ancient method called "Cassone Padovano". This training method was developed by Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages. Our vineyard is one of the few still existing in Italy and continues to produce grapes to this day. In order to preserve the genetic characteristics of this ancient and peculiar Tocai Friulano biotype, we have replanted it starting from the original shoots and canes. In addition to Tocai Friulano, we grow a number of other grapevines, concentrating on indigenous grape varieties such as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso and Malvasia Istriana. S6 Ep 1704Ep. 1704 Letizia Ferracchiato Of Cantina Fongoli | Slow Wine 2023

Welcome to Episode 1704; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview features Letizia Ferracchiato of Cantina Fongoli Stevie Kim and her team traveled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon! Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery: The Fongoli company was founded by Decio Fongoli in the early 1900s, when he took over a property made up of several farms, located at the top of the hill in S. Marco, in the centre of the Montefalco wine-making area. As usual with the farms of the period, they produced wine and oil, as well as rearing pigs and cattle, and cultivating arable land. The first bottled wines date back to the 1940s, thanks to Angelo Fongoli, son of Decio, who produced Bianco S.Marco, Rosso di Montefalco and Vino Sagrantino Pregiato, at that time classified as table wines. Angelo's great passion led him to see the recognition of the DOC for Sagrantino di Montefalco in 1977, the only one in that year. Awards such as the Dujia D'Or for Montefalco Rosso in 1981 and 1983 and other local awards arrived in those years. Since the end of the 1980s until 1999, the winery was run by his nephew Decio and since 1999, by his great-nephew Angelo, both of whom follow the original approach with ageing in large oak barrels, bottling strictly in-house and vinification with indigenous yeasts using only their own grapes. Today the property covers about 35 hectares in a single body, 23 of which are vineyards, 6 woodland, and the rest truffle ground and meadows, and is managed entirely according to biodynamic principles. Welcome to Episode 1703, where Cynthia Chaplin interviews Italian wine producers during the wine2wine Business Forum 2023 Podcast Marathon. Today she interviews Romina Leopardi of Tenute Rubino featuring the wine - Torre Testa DOC Brindisi Susumaniello 100% Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. More about today’s winery: Tenute Rubino’s roots date back to the 1980s when Tommaso Rubino, an avid supporter of Apulia’s viticultural and oenological potential, created a foundation for production divided between five estates. The goal was to express the best of local viticulture through hand-crafted wines showcasing Puglia’s native varieties, including Primitivo, Negroamaro, and the revival of Susumaniello, which was on the verge of extinction. In 1999, Tommaso teamed up with his son Luigi and daughter-in-law Romina to create the brand Tenute Rubino, based in Puglia’s Brindisi region. Today, the Tenute Rubino winery produces an array of authentic, terroir-driven wines which have revitalized the reputation of Apulian wines across the globe. In March 2022 the company has obtained the Equalitas, Sustainable Organization Module, Certification, the standard that promotes the sustainability culture in the agricultural and viticultural industry on an international basis. S16 Ep 1695Ep. 1695 Margareth Henríquez | On The Road With Stevie Kim Throwback Instalive

Welcome to Episode 1695 on another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today we are bringing you a throwback to Stevie’s conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Maggie Henriquez. More about today’s winery The House was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Paying close attention to the vineyard’s character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream. With a very original approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the notion of vintage to create the most generous expression of Champagne, every year. Thus, he founded a House in which all Champagnes are of the same level of distinction. Six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream, enriching the founder’s vision and savoir faire. In 2012 Gilles decided to return to Emilia Romagna and complete his Sommelier studies. Shortly thereafter, the school at which he completed his studies offered him to work as a lecturer in Restaurant service -Bartending, Cafeteria and Enology. He still lectures today, alongside his work as a consultant. Gilles was until 2023 the first and only Ambassador of the Negroamaro grape variety in Italy, Europe and the World. S6 Ep 1682Ep. 1682 Stefano Gabellini Of Tenuta La Viola | Slow Wine 2023

Welcome to Episode 1682; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview features Stefano Gabellini of Tenuta la Viola. Stevie Kim and her team traveled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon! Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days. More about today’s winery: The Gabellini family, owner of the estate, moved from the inland Romagna to Bertinoro and in 1962 purchased the land with Sangiovese and Albana vineyards, then bush trained. Wine was an important part of the farming tradition, and serving it on the table meant sharing with guests one’s love and pride in the fruits of one’s labour. Even back then, it was not just refreshment, but way of uniting people, a chance to spend quality time together. “For us, wine is a tradition and passion that permanently binds us to our land. We firmly believe that the history, experience, dedication and professionalism of the people who work it all come together in the quality and character of the wines it produces, making them unique.” Connect: Website: www.tenutalaviola.it/index.php/en/home-2/ _______________________________ Let's keep in touch!
