Welcome to Episode 1791, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into ‘Italian Fine Wine in Sweden - Examples from a Wine Collectors’ Club’' presented by Niklas Bergqvist IWE, moderated by Alessandra Angelini Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. Abstract: Vinkällaren Grappe is Sweden’s oldest and largest club for wine collectors, with more than 1,500 members. Founded in 1986 and situated in the heart of Stockholm, it cares for its members’ collections in its climate-controlled cellar vaults. The clientele is mainly private collectors, but also corporate members. Besides storing their bottles under suitable conditions, it offers a database overview of the collection that is linked to Liv-Ex data for market value. By looking at the evolution of the thousands of bottles that make up the collective inventory of the Club, Niklas Bergqvist will paint a picture of how the Swedish interest in Italian Fine Wine has changed over the years. Focusing on 2008, 2018 and 2023 he will first investigate how Italian wine has performed in relation to wines from other countries in terms of both volume and value. Afterwards, the evolution of the relative importance between the different regions and origins within Italy in the same years will be explored. Finally, there will be a brief overview of which options for sourcing wines are open to wine collectors in the Swedish monopoly-based wine market. More about today’s presenter: Niklas Bergqvist started out in the kitchens of various restaurants in Stockholm, Sweden. A deep interest in wine drove him to take a sommelier course to understand the concepts of matching wine and food. After a serious skiing accident that left him unable to walk due to a badly broken leg, he used his rehabilitation time focusing on the WSET Diploma; he finished the programme as the best Continental European student in 2012. Since then he has been working with wine full time as head sommelier in a private wine club for wine collectors. Bergqvist is also a WSET educator and Italian Wine Expert through the Vinitaly International Academy. This is one of the largest and fastest growing areas in the U.S., not only in population, but in wine consumption. However, Florida is much more than Mickey Mouse and Miami Beach. The cultures, demographics, and markets are as varied as they are vastly spread apart. They stretch from the Latin-influenced metropolis of Miami to Orlando and Disney World in the heart of the state to the Riviera of the Panhandle, which crosses into a second time zone. This session will explore the demographics and regions of the Florida market, as well as the opportunities both on- and off-trade for Italian wine producers: who are the wine drinkers in Florida, where they live, where they buy their wine, how we can sell more Italian wine to them, and which Italian wines might have the best success. Baia Abuladze became a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree in 2019 in Europe. She is the founder of Baia's Wine. As the winery is family-based, she performs everyday tasks ranging from fieldwork to tourism management, winemaking processes, and even meetings with her partners worldwide. She works to increase and diversify their 15 export markets. Baia's Wine is a family winery located in the western part of the country, Obcha Village. The winery was founded in 2015 by Baia. Baia’s Wine is a small family winery in the village of Obcha, western Georgia. Baia and her family have been growing grapes and producing wine for over three generations, and they are proud to share their wine with the world, as wine has always been a significant tradition for the older generations of the family. Baia is 27 years old, and since 2015, she has been producing organic white wines. Baia’s sister, Gvantsa, is currently pursuing a master's degree in agricultural science at university. She started making organic wine in 2015 and is now producing red wine from Otskhanusi Sapere and Aladasturi grapes. Giorgi is the youngest in the family and is studying enology at the same university as his big sister. All of the wine is made using grapes grown only on their own vineyards in Obcha. All the wines are aged in the family wine cellar. Three generations of the family work on the vineyard to deliver traditional organic Georgian wine.

We are part of a global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. After a few years as a silent partner, the Belgian Virginie Saverys took over the prestigious winery in 2009. She was a consumer, and overnight she became a producer. This crossing of the mirror motivated Saverys to undertake a radical regeneration of the winery. Safety at work, pollution and climate became Avignonesi primary concerns. Out of respect for workers, consumers, and the environment, she has banned highly toxic synthetic biocides that poison life, and pollute the soil, the air, and the water. Concurrently, she has forbidden the use of commercial yeasts, dyes, enzymes, tannins, and other industrial adjuvants in the cellar. In Today’s episode, Stevie sits down with producers, Antonio Terni and Paolo Berluti from the VIA Gita Scolastica deep dive in the Marche wine region held last year, November 15th to 19th. More about today’s wineries Fattoria Le Terrazze The story of Fattoria Le Terrazze goes back to 1882 when the winery was established on the hills surrounding Numana. Since the late nineteenth century, the Terni family has been growing Montepulciano grapes and transforming them into wine. Under the guidance of winemaker Federico Curtaz, Antonio and Georgina Terni today produce around 90,000 bottles per year from their 16 hectares of vineyards. The Conero is a particularly interesting area for red wines. Its most typical product is in fact Rosso Conero, available both as a DOC wine and as the Sassi Neri DOCG Reserve. In addition to Rosso Conero, Fattoria Le Terrazze also produces IGT Chaos, a wine resulting from a blend of Montepulciano, Syrah and Merlot, Chardonnay Le Cave, Pinkfluid rosé and Donna Giulia, a sparkler made entirely from Montepulciano grapes. Furthermore, the estate produces extra-virgin olive oil of excellent quality from their olive groves of the Frantoio, Leccino and Pendolino varieties which surround the estate.. More about today’s winery: “Montenidoli: 200 hectares/500 acres of woods on the hill overlook San Gimignano, in front of Chianti Classico, between Florence and Siena. It is unpolluted land, high upon the hill, with clean air, far away from any chemical poisons invented by humans. When we arrived in 1965, the land was abandoned: the woods had invaded the fields, the olive trees were running wild, and the vines were covered by bushes. We committed ourselves to the soil and endeavored for a new beginning. We began breeding rabbits, as their manure was excellent for fertilizing the soil. We bought worms, spreading them in the fields to create humus and soften the earth. We pruned only in winter when the vegetation was dormant. All the cuttings were ground and fermented to make compost, which we used to fertilize the plants.
