S7 Ep 1891Ep. 1891 Giulia Castagner | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to this special episode of the Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he is interviewing Giulia Castagner of Distilleria Castagner. More about today’s winery Master Distiller Roberto Castagner has been distilling Grappa since 1996. The family mission is to transform Italy’s traditional Grappa into a modern international spirit. Between Venice and the Dolomites, the distillery sits on the slopes of the Conegliano hills in the Province of Treviso, a strategically important area for the region's wine- growing. The Castagner family distillery is now one of the leading and most innovative distilleries in Italy. Giulia is Roberto Castagner's second daughter. With her siblings Silvia and Giovanni and her cousin Carlo she represents the second generation of the company. Before graduating in Marketing Management at Bocconi University in Milan, she moved to Boston MA where she worked as an intern for a wine and spirits importer/retailer. Meanwhile, she took the chance to write her graduate thesis (in quantitative methods), investigating the reasons why Italian restaurants in Boston (and in the US) don't actually propose grappa as the Italian spirit par excellence. When she came back to her hometown she worked for a couple of years in the fashion industry, then she decided to join the family business where she is in charge of the Sales and Marketing Deptartment. She strongly believes that in order to (re)promote grappa culture abroad, grappa distilleries need to communicate together the great product evolution they have witnessed over the last 20 years. With this in mind, she co-founded the Grappa Revolution: a group of ten major grappa distilleries that work together to promote modern grappa culture. S7 Ep 1855Ep. 1855 Small is beautiful How to establish and grow a successful partnership with boutique US importers | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 1855, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into - Small is beautiful. How to establish and grow a successful partnership with boutique US importers with Giuseppe Leonard LoCascio & Nunzio Castaldo Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. Abstract: The US is the most difficult wine market in the world: it is a heavily regulated, highly competitive, mature market where wine consumption is slowing and consumer habits are quickly changing. However, it still is an attractive market for Italian wineries, offering high visibility and access to affluent consumers, but these benefits will increasingly come at a cost. The US will remain a very expensive market to open, manage, and work with. In these challenging conditions, small Italian artisanal wineries with limited budgets should calibrate their expectations accordingly and understand what kind of import/distribution model is likely to be the best fit for their needs and resources. This session will show how boutique regional importers/distributors combining a focused selection, market expertise, and product knowledge might be the best solution for artisanal Italian wineries, and we will discuss how to successfully create stable, profitable relationships with them. In 1963, his grandfather Leonardo Specogna, who had spent some years as an emigrant in Switzerland, returned to Friuli. It was during this time that, fascinated by the beauty of the hills of Rocca Bernarda, in Corno di Rosazzo, he decided to purchase a small plot of land in the area. Initially, the family's focus was on dairy, cereal, and self-consumption wine production. However, thanks to the dedication of Cristian's father, Graziano, the estate gradually shifted its primary focus towards wine production. Cristian's interest in viticulture and winemaking naturally evolved as he followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. After completing studies in Viticulture and Oenology, he embarked on a series of experiences and study trips to prominent Italian and French wine-growing regions, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the potential of their own territory. The winery now stands on the hills of Rocca Bernarda in Corno di Rosazzo, at the heart of the Friulian wine land. Today, the family's winemaking tradition is upheld by the third generation, Cristian and Michele. They have 25 hectares of vineyards, farmed organically situated on the hills between 100 and 300 metres above sea level. A few steps away there are the rows of our San Giuliano cru vines, a historic vineyard that brings together four generations of the Pelissero family. In the center of the rows there is a ‘ciabot’, a brick house, with the statue of Saint Giuliano that gives its name to the cru or, as we call it in Italy, ‘Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive‘ (MGA – the Additional Geographical Mentions). S7 Ep 1845Ep. 1845 Luxembourg and the Italian wine market | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 1845, where we present the session recordings from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into - Luxembourg: demographics, consumer preferences and the Italian wine market with Jessica van der Schee & Jeanette Servidio Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. Abstract: Although Luxembourg is small (population 660,809) it should be an important export market for any winery because of its affluence and diverse population (47.2% are foreigners). Topping the IMF’s 2023 list of GDP per capita, with an estimated 1 in 15 residents being millionaires and there is robust wine consumption with an average purchase of 40.8 Liters (54.5 bottles) of wine per person per year. Links to Italy are strong: approx. 7% of residents are Italian or Luxembourgers of Italian origin. Italian wine imports represented 13% of wine imported into Luxembourg last year, the volume of which was 20% higher than the previous year. As Luxembourg has a strong domestic wine industry producing of crémant and still wines from primarily white grapes (Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and others), red wines form the majority of imports. Therefore, red wines should be the focus of any pitch to a Luxembourg importer (together with white wines that are unique and distinct to the styles of wine produced in Luxembourg). S7 Ep 1842Ep. 1842 Andrea Morettino | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1832 on Italian Wine Podcast, Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Today, he will be interviewing Andrea Morettino More about today’s guest Morettino is an authentic love story for coffee that began in 1920 in Palermo, at the center of the Mediterranean. For the past four generations it has created an artisanal coffee of excellence and it has been promoting its culture and traditions, constantly pursuing their natural predisposition for quality. Andrea Morettino, Head of Sales and Marketing, represents the fourth generation of the family of coffee roasters. The Coffee Plantation in Sicily Morettino family for about 30 years has carried out an experimental project that has seen coffee plants sprout and grow even on the island, also thanks to a significant climate change that we are witnessing. A strong signal received by the nature that gave life, in the experimental plantation Morettino that rises in San Lorenzo ai Colli, in Palermo, the first Sicilian native coffee. Based on the geography of the origins of coffee, the Morettino plantation is located more north than the typical tropical lands. The native coffee of Sicily is a 100% Arabica of the highest quality, with special and unique fragrances, typical of the Sicilian land, notes of zibibbo grapes and carob and sweet smells of white plumeria flowers and panela sugar. Over the last three years, the harvest has been particularly abundant, with a constant growth trend: 30 kg in 2021, 50 kg in 2022 and a forecast of 100 kg for 2023. The experimental cultivation project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Palermo and the Botanical Garden of Palermo.
