More about today’s guest He is 29 years old, and this is the story of how a practicing vascular surgeon from Moscow became a professional sommelier after moving to Kazakhstan. Wine had always been his second passion. Amateur wine master classes, tastings, his favorite bar ("Bigati bar"), and wine shop ("Drinx") were a significant part of his life as soon as he took off his medical gown and left the hospital. But it was in Almaty that this passion transformed into a profession. Unable to continue working as a doctor legally in Kazakhstan, he took a job as a waiter, like many others, to earn a living. Driven by a desire for further development, he met his future wine mentor, Artem Lebedev, who ignited his love for Italy and its wines. His trained mind, memory, and perseverance allowed him to achieve remarkable results in a short time. After study and work experiences in Istanbul (Turkey), London (UK), and finally New York, Alessandro joined Colangelo & Partners, a NYC-based integrated marketing agency specialized in food, wine & spirits, in 2011. In five years Alessandro grew his responsibilities to the level of directing all marketing activities for Italian wine clients. Alessandro joined Wilson Daniels Wholesale in NY as sales representative in February 2016, with the goal to expand the distribution of the Italian portfolio in the NYC metro area. Since April 2018 Alessandro is the National Italian Specialist and Brand Manager of Wilson Daniels, focusing on promoting the Italian wines to the main leading fine wine markets. As of March 2022, Alessandro is the National Portfolio Director for the Italian Estates. Alessandro was awarded a Professional Certificate in Digital Media Marketing from New York University in 2010, the WSET Advanced Level 3 certificate at the International Wine Center in New York in 2014, the Italian Wine Professional Certificate at Italian Wine Central in 2015 and the CSW certificate by the Society of Wine Educators in 2018. The winery is awarded the Best Biodynamic White Wine 2024 Trophy for Soave Doc San Brizio 2022 in Wine Without Walls, a section of 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024 More about today’s winery: Sisto, Elena and Pietro Tessari are the 4th generation of the Tessari family. Sisto is the agronomist and representative of export markets. Pietro is the oenologist / winemaker. Elena, with a degree in Economics and Business, is responsible for marketing and public relations. She is a sommelier, "Donna del Vino" and "Castellana di Soave". The winery is located in Costalunga di Monteforte d’Alpone (Veneto, Italy) in the Soave wine area, with black basalt rocks and volcanic origin. The main grapes they produce are Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave - 70% of the production is white wines. Key facts: 1.Organic since 1985 with biodynamic practices, that’s why they are considered organic pioneers in Italy 2.Estate bottled from about 100 acres. They are also associated with FIVI, the Italian Federation of Independent winegrowers. 3. They are part of the Associazione Ville Venete - Venetian Villas Association. The estate name, La Cappuccina, comes from the ancient chapel where the Capuchins once officiated. They have decided, for ever greater quality, to carry out all of the different phases of wine production – from the vine to the bottling line – according to Organic precepts since 1985 with a biodynamic view. Welcome to Episode 2028 in which host Giulia Stocchetti interviews Alessandro Serughetti. Alessandro Serughetti is an oenologist from Sicily, who travelled around the world to different wine regions before founding his own winery on the slopes of Etna. He has been to Portugal, South Africa and New Zealand, where he did an interesting and enlighting research on the effects of aminoacids in Sauvignon Blanc's vinification. Today, he's taking care of his vineyard making terroir driven wines led by the love for his homeland. More about today’s guest Alessandro Serughetti was born in Palermo in 1992. He studied at the university in Marsala where graduated in viticulture and oenology. After this, he decided to move to Asti, where obtained a master’s degree and second year completed in Portugal. It was one of the most important experiences of his career. After he studied, he worked in Italy for important wineries. Then he went to work in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Back to Italy in 2017 Alessandro 2020 met his wife Loredana, in 2022 they decided to invest in a territory they love so much ETNA. A small vineyard planted in 1960 on the North side of volcano Etna at about 680 meters above sea level. The little village is Rovittello, a suburb of Castiglione di Sicilia, exactly in Contrada Dafara Galluzzo. The area is unique for the volcanic soil, rich in minerals, such as potassium, iron, and magnesium. The historic vineyard comprises Nerello Mascalese grapes, grown as a sapling on chestnut poles. There we can find other white grape varieties, such as Minella and Carricante, or red grapes such as Minella nera, this is because in ancient times were planted more cultivar. His greatest passions. After graduation, he immediately started to work at Vietti and discover the wine world. Those were challenging years because there were not so many people working at the Winery. This meant going to the vineyards, following vinification, tastings, winery registers and documents, investments, purchases, sales and rental contracts. He has worked side by side with Mario Cordero and Luca Currado and consolidated his responsibilities and skills. In 2016 the Krause family purchased the Winery but things did not change much. The philosophy has always been to keep focusing on tradition and on high quality wines. This job requires experience, because every vintage is different. You learn every year and make mistakes Technical skills without experience are useless. What binds him to this great Winery is something that goes beyond a simple professional reason. They talk about the territory, cuisine, and vines of Castiglione di Sicilia, highlighting the wines of Pietradolce. More about today’s winery: Pietradolce was founded in 2005 in Solicchiata, a small village a few kilometers from Castiglione di Sicilia, on the Northern slope of Mount Etna. The family Faro has been always committed in preserving and showing the beauty of the teritory, so the love for it, as well as the respect for the ecosystem and the traditions represent the core of Pietradolce's philosophy. The estate owns 30 hectares of small plots located within Rampante, Zottorinoto, Santo Spirito e Feudo di Mezzo contradas, in a range between 700 and 950 mt. above sea level. The soils are rather stony, with light sandy loam rich, able to produce unique and elegant wines. Pietradolce cultivates just indigenous varieties, the main characters of Etna's history: Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. The vines are coltivated through the traditional bush vine system “Alberello Etneo”. From the small prephilloxera single-plots Pietardolce obtains its prime wines. Theese wines arte vinified in concrete tanks before the ageing in 700 litres french oak. The grand crus Barbagalli and Sant'andrea rapresent the highest and purest expression of the volcano. The new winery is the result of a project in which art and artisanship create a contemporary style environment, strongly linked to the territory. Volcanic rock, iron, wood, and vineyard soil are the materials used for the interiors of the wine cellar, barrel room, and tasting room. Inside there are some pieces of art, works by local artisans and Italian artists such as Alfio Bonanno, exponent of the Land Art and Giorgio Vigna, capable of shaping materials as glass, and steel. These works enrich the dialougue with the teritory. They were wood carpenters. In 1972 they bought 25 ha that over the years became the reference in the production of Verdicchio di Matelica. Today Mauro and Tito Bisci, Giuseppe's sons, own the company. The estate is farmed organic since 2015 (certified since 2019), with 18ha under Verdicchio and 2ha under Sangiovese and Merlot. It produces around 140 thousand bottles (120K are from Verdicchio). It is located in mid-hill at 320 to 370 meters above sea level, slightly sloping and in prevalence exposed to the south-west. Aroldo Bellelli, the oenologist and nowadays part of the company, is a key figure in the company. He started as a young agronomist in 1992 and took over winemaking in 2006. Gabriele Brugnoni, export manager, since 2016 when the company, after a long collaboration with the De Grazia group, decided to have a more direct control of all their markets and distribution. Is a large, established national importer the right fit for your business? Better to be a “big fish in a small pond” with a boutique, specialist importer? What about the human connection: Should family-owned wineries align with family-owned importers? Setting expectations from both sides is critical: What are the expected sales for the first year? First 5 years? What marketing support does the importer expect from the supplier? What is a reasonable expectation? How can the importer partner with the supplier to stay top-of-mind with the critical distributor audience? Peter Mondavi Jr., family proprietor of Charles Krug Winery and C. Mondavi & Family, will explore these questions and more in his seminar. A historical Napa Valley producer, Charles Krug has now expanded into the import business. This session will explain why this legendary Napa producer is going into the import business and what value they bring to their suppliers. Peter will also share what he looks for in a supplier relationship and how his company sets realistic expectations for sales, marketing and brand-building. He will discuss the necessity of shared values, passion and vision for a successful relationship, the need for open and regular communication, and how quality throughout the organization - from the vineyard and winemaking to sales and marketing - is paramount as he builds his import portfolio.
