S7 Ep 2138Ep. 2138 What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market | wine2wine Business Forum 2023

Welcome to Episode 2138, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market” and is led by Mirella Menglide. Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and is pleased to present this series of market-focus sessions, recorded in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. About the session: While the US was a booming market for wines during the pandemic years and Italian wines reached a peak in 2022, overall wine consumption slowed for the second year in a row. Mirella Menglide will discuss how imported wines, faced with a barrage of federal and state government regulations, must find a way to appeal to a new, younger generation of consumers who seem to be increasingly less interested in drinking wine. About the host: Mirella Menglide holds a master’s degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from the University of Bucharest. Fluent in 5 languages, she translated a novel into Italian for the University for Foreigners in Perugia and has contributed to various publications. She also attended a course on International Business Administration at the University of Gothenburg. After working in public relations at a Swedish company, she joined the New York office of the Italian Trade Commission as part of the food & wine sector. At present, she is the Senior Trade Analyst of the sector, in charge of advising Italian companies on US legislation, helping organize promotional and educational activities such as seminars and guided tastings, and participating in trade shows alongside wine and food professionals and press representatives from both Italy and the US. Mirella has been instrumental in ensuring and maintaining the relationships between American and Italian food and wine companies, which aims to result in a broader knowledge, appreciation and, ultimately, presence of Italian products in the US. When not helping Italian companies find a counterpart in the US, Mirella enjoys reading and writing, art, music, traveling, cooking and, of course, drinking wine. S7 Ep 2137Ep. 2137 Wim Sas interviews Giovanni Fiorentino | Clubhouse Ambassadors’ Corner

Welcome to Episode 2137 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Wim Sas interviews Giovanni Fiorentino, of the Fiorentino winery in the small rural village of Paternopoli, in the center of the Taurasi area, in Irpinia. Today’s learning objectives: I hope this interview can set a different view on Aglianico and Taurasi. I’m always surprised how ‘unknown’ these wines are beside the well known producers like Mastroberardino, Feudo di San Gregorio or Terredora. You know, once you have a well-aged Taurasi in your glass, you know exactly what I’m talking about! Co-Moderator - Wim Sas Wim Sas, the founder of Wijnkennis in Lille, Belgium, is a renowned wine expert with over 30 years of experience. He recently earned the prestigious title of Italian Wine Ambassador from the Vinitaly International Academy in Verona, a recognition achieved by only a few worldwide. His deep knowledge of Italian wines, including varieties, production methods, terroir, and history, sets him apart in the wine industry. Besides being an importer, he is dedicated to wine writing, wine education, teaching courses for aspiring sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. His passion for wine is evident in his commitment to sharing his expertise and inspiring others on their wine journey. He graduated in law and worked as a consultant for the public administration. His parents were farmers and his mother Margherita, in particular, always made wine at home, while his father was forced to emigrate to the United States. Giovanni always used to help his mother in the production of ‘Aglianico’ and ‘Coda di Volpe’ wines, which was sold in demijohns. In 2012, Giovanni quit his job and built a new bio-architectural winery next to the house where he was born. He continued to cultivate the family vineyards, about 5 hectares - 4 hectares of Aglianico and 1 hectare of Coda di Volpe. He bottled for the first time in 2016: now, he produces about 20 thousands bottles each year. His goal is to make wines that tell the story of his family and his land: a gentle and elegant wine that respects the vintages and roots, the terroir without neglecting good drinkability. Welcome to Episode 2130 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Larissa Lawrence interviews Sebastian Van de Sype, of the Sebastian Van de Sype winery in Modena. Today’s learning objectives: What’s the cultural orientation of Lambrusco? What is distinct and unique about Lambrusco, relative to other Italian wines? How might I enjoy it personally and convey that professionally? Co-Moderator - Larissa Lawrence Larissa Lawrence is the co-founder of Vinos Enteros, a Mexico City-based wine importing and distribution company that focuses exclusively on artisanal producers who make terroir-driven wine grounded in tradition. Vinos Enteros counts the top restaurants, hotels and private collectors across the country as clients. Prior to founding Vinos Enteros, Larissa was a management consultant, media strategist and journalist. Larissa is a graduate of Columbia Business School and a certified Italian Wine Ambassador through VinItaly International Academy. She holds WSET Level 3 Advanced Certification and Level 1 Certification through the International Court of Sommeliers. She’s currently pursuing the WSET Level 4 Diploma. Larissa has been featured on podcasts, articles and panels discussing her point of view on topics as diverse as natural wines, representation of women in the wine industry, differences between wine trends in Mexico and the US and entrepreneurship. She has been invited to compete in international blind wine tasting competitions such as the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup. She is also a wine educator, having taught the WSET Level 2 course in Mexico. It was a conscious choice to embark full-time on this project, together with his spouse, Mary, who is a midwife. The winery started in late 2020, acquiring an organic vineyard in Emilia in the hills around Modena, in Castelvetro, and also making the first vintage. Since then, the winery evolved and recently they inaugurated their own production site. Before starting the winery, Sebastian had been working in the region for two F1 teams and fell in love with the region and its gastronomic opportunities. The Lambrusco wine style was inspiring, especially in terms of growing potential. The spark that ignited the project most probably can be found in his childhood, growing up in a culinary oriented family with the creed “taste thoroughly and choose quality over quantity!”. The continuous search for beauty and quality was in fact an important cornerstone of his education, whether it was in music, sports, study or any other occupation. S7 Ep 2123Ep. 2123 Chefs and Wine with Gurvinder Bhatia and Gino Colangelo | wine2wine Business Forum 2023

Welcome to Episode 2123, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “Chefs and Wine: A complicated relationship” and features Gurvinder Bhatia and Gino Colangelo. About the session: This session explores the importance of a chef’s relationship with wine, through the eyes of professionals in the restaurant sector as well as consumers. Is it necessary for a great chef to also be well educated in wine? Should chefs and sommeliers work together to create menus, or is the food the chef’s primary focus and the wine should be left to the somms and the consumers? Based upon the results of a survey conducted earlier this year, we reveal the opinions of a wide variety of wine professionals, discussing everything from how do diners choose a restaurant and is the wine list important to that choice, all the way to how extensive and diverse restaurant wine lists should be. About the hosts: Gino Colangelo is the founder and president of Colangelo & Partners, the leading wine-focused PR & communications agency in the US with domestic clients as well as clients from around the globe. Gino’s particular interest and focus is Italian wine. He and his team work with both private companies (Arnaldo Caprai, Frescobaldi, Ornellaia, Pasqua and many others) and consortia and other trade groups (Chianti Classico, Langhe Prosecco DOC, Sicilia DOC, Slow Wine and many more). His agency has created award-winning campaigns and helps companies, big and small, navigate the complex US market. Gurvinder Bhatia is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Quench Magazine - North America’s longest-running and Canada’s most widely distributed wine and food publication. Although he has written for Quench for over two decades and been on the editorial team for the past 15 years, Gurvinder purchased the magazine in 2021 and is committed to the magazine’s evolution to be a much truer representation of our society. Gurvinder is also the wine columnist for Global Television Edmonton, an international wine judge and the president of Vinomania Consulting. S7 Ep 2120Ep. 2120 Roberta Testa of Tenuta degli Angeli | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon

Welcome to episode 2120 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 160 of Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Roberta Testa of Tenuta degli Angeli, a winery founded in 1984 in the locality of S.Stefano degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli in the province of Bergamo in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. The winery was awarded Best Sparkling Wine for Vsq Brut Metodo Classico Degli Angeli 2018 at 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024. More about today’s guest: The Tenuta degli Angeli agricultural company was founded in 1984 in the locality of S.Stefano degli Angeli in Carobbio degli Angeli: a "favor" vineyard as Pierangelo Testa, creator of this small and wonderful oasis, had defined it. The 350 meters of altitude, the soil composed of calcareous marl and clay, an ideal microclimate for wine production and careful care are the filters from which constant wines full of territoriality emerge, the pride of the Testa family, who, harvest after harvest, they renew the challenge that lies silent in this small strip of land. Added to this is that unmistakable feminine touch and attention to detail that Mrs. Manuela and her daughters have been able to instill in every corner of the company. Today on the elite hill there is a "bonbonniere" vineyard: small in size and full of promises, kept harvest after harvest. The plants, chosen according to the characteristics of the soil, climate and microclimate; the appropriate breeding methodology and the suffrage of the Grand Designer who only signs the best, have made Pierangelo's dream come true, changing the hobby into a convinced passion. Passed on with equal fervor to the kind, dynamic wife Mrs. Manuela, to her daughters Laura, Roberta and Maria and Francesco, the only son. Connect: Website: https://tenutadegliangeli.it/en/ Instagram: tenuta_degli_angeli Facebook: TenutaDegliAngeli More about the host Marc Millon: Marc Millon, VIA Italian Wine Ambassador 2021, has been travelling, eating, drinking, learning and writing about wine, food and travel for nearly 40 years. Born in Mexico, with a mother from Hawaii via Korea and an anthropologist father from New York via Paris, he was weaned on exotic and delicious foods. S7 Ep 2107Ep. 2107 Cameron Jones and Claudia Stern | Everybody Needs A Bit Of Scienza

Welcome to Episode 2107 of the Italian Wine Podcast, where Professo Scienza takes questions from the international wine community and answers them in his own inimitable way! These shows are generally in the Italian language. Today’s questions about reincarnation and the olfactory impact of wine come from Cameron Jones and Claudia Stern. Today’s questions: If you could be reincarnated as an Italian grape variety, what would it be and why? Se potesse reincarnarsi in un vitigno italiano, quale sarebbe e perché? We have learned from the Greeks to rediscover the sense of smell and of course taste. If there is a wine that touches your senses, is that the best? How many times in your life have you tasted a wine and changed your mind and taken a step forward in pure sensations and in your philosophical approach? More about Professor Scienza: Professor Atillio Scienza is the one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” instead of “Vermentino.” He is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff! S7 Ep 2105Ep. 2105 Michele Longari interviews Cecilia Longo | Clubhouse Ambassadors’ Corner

Welcome to Episode 2105 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Michele Longari interviews Cecilia Longo of premium Italian wine merchant Longo 1961. These sessions are recorded on Clubhouse and reproduced here on the Italian Wine Podcast! The focus of today’s conversation is less on the production and more on the commercial, logistics and marketing side of wine. Sometimes, we tend to forget that once the wine has been bottled, there is still a lot of work to be done by many different players before the wine actually reaches our glass. The interview with Cecilia will hopefully give listeners a clearer understanding of what happens behind the scenes! Co-Moderator - Michele Longari Until 10 years ago I was working as a computer engineer in Emilia Romagna. Although my daily job was in a different industry, I already had a deep-rooted passion for good wine and food. In fact, I was spending most of my spare time and holidays traveling around the regions of Italy to learn more about the local cuisine and traditional wines. Since I was becoming more and more passionate about wine, I decided to start the professional sommelier diploma course with the Italian Sommelier Association, with the main idea of learning something more about wine and, at that time, I was not even planning to take the final exams. Then, the more I was involved with wine and the less I wanted to be involved with computers and coding (who can blame me?!), and so I eventually ended up taking the AIS Sommelier Diploma in 2013 then, the very same year, I moved to the UK and started an MSc programme in Wine Business Management at the Royal Agricultural University. While I was finishing my masters dissertation, I accepted a job offer from Hay Wines, a small independent British wine merchants and importers, and now after eight years I am still working for the same company. My official role is purchasing director, and my main responsibilities are purchasing strategy and imports management. Guest Moderator: Michele Longari Facebook: @MicheleTLongari Instagram: @micheletlongari Twitter: @MicheleTLongari LinkedIn: @micheletlongari Website: haywines.co.uk Guest Bio - Cecilia Longo: Born in 1995, Cecilia has a love-at-first-sight relationship with the captivating world of the dining table and joined the family business, Longo, at eighteen years old. The company was founded in 1961 in Legnano (MI) by Consiglio Longo. His vision was passed on to his children, Osvaldo, Giovanni, and Paola, who opened a wine shop and then expanded the business to become leaders in corporate gourmet gift-giving. In 2006, they decided to focus on the commercialization of Italian wine around the world. Today, Longo exports over 40 wineries to 30 countries worldwide. Cecilia oversees product selection, marketing, and international market development, building on the family legacy and keeping the tradition alive while propelling the company toward new international markets. S7 Ep 2104Ep. 2104 Denise Marrone of Agricola Gian Piero Marrone | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon

Welcome to episode 2104 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 158 of Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Denise Marrone of Agricola Gian Piero Marrone, a family-run winery that can be found in Annunziata near La Morra, in the middle of the Langhe of Barolo. The winery is awarded the Best Italian Wine (Banco BPM) Trophy for Barolo Docg Bussia 2019 in 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2024. More about today’s guest: For over a century: four generations of passion, tenacity and hard work. The origins Pietro Marrone was born in 1887, to a family that already cultivated grapes for the production of wine. Very passionate and extremely ambitious from an early age. In 1910, at the age of 23, he asked his father Edoardo if he could cultivate some vineyards using techniques that were revolutionary at the time. The second generation Carlo was born in 1924 and, along with his brothers Paolo and Michele and their sister Mariuccia, helped his father Pietro to expand the company, both in terms of quantity and quality. After the Second World War, Carlo resumed his work in the vineyard and in the cellar with even greater passion than before. The wines became better and better and the farmhouse became known in the village as “Cascina Carlot”. The third generation Gian Piero was born in 1955. The wine gene had become part of the family’s DNA, passed down from generation to generation, so, when he finished high school, he devoted himself to the production of wines with the same passion as his father. The time was ripe to plant native white grapes in the vineyards: Arneis, Favorita and Moscato, in addition to the red varieties Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo, and of course Nebbiolo for Barbaresco and Barolo. The fourth generation: Sorelle Marrone Looking ambitiously to the future with a traditional heart Gian Piero’s three daughters, Denise, Serena and Valentina, work alongside Gian Piero to achieve increasingly ambitious goals. Welcome to Episode 2099 of the Italian Wine Podcast, where Professo Scienza takes questions from the international wine community and answers them in his inimitable way! These shows are generally in the Italian language. Today’s question about the impact of climate change comes from Kerri Chambers. Today’s question: With regard to climate change and its impact on viticulture, how can we best meet the palates of consumers who are looking for a more contemporary expression of wine, compared to the original? For example: more tannins / structure in Barolo / Brunello ... or perhaps it is better to change style? More about Professor Scienza: Professor Atillio Scienza is the one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” instead of “Vermentino.” He is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. Mantova is a small city in the south of Lombardy, in the north of Italy, land of culture, history and gastronomy. People used to think that Lambrusco was produced only in Emilia Romagna, but we can have Lambrusco also in Lombardy. In 1987, the Lambrusco Mantovano DOC was created, even though Benedictine monks have been producing Lambrusco in this area since the 12th century under the guidance of Matilde di Canossa, a great Countess and a great woman (Raffaella and Giuseppe dedicated their first wine to her). Fifteen years ago, Raffaella and Giuseppe left their jobs and decided to dedicate themselves to their great passion: wine and vines. They became organic autochthonous vine growers and they created Bugno Martino winery. No ancient recipes and no family tradition, only a clear idea in their mind. They wanted to produce a different type of Mantuan Lambrusco, to return to Lambrusco the identity and value it deserves. All started when she accidentally came across a job announcement where it said: "We are teaching about wine with the best sommeliers, come and join the course, if you succeed, you'll work with us". To put it in a nutshell, that's all I did. I ordered my first Atlas of wine and my cousin sent me 2 more books. In that same year I registered for a 2 year joint program between Armenia and Germany (Geisenheim and Armenian Agrarian universities) "Enology and Wine Management". Thanks to the program we had the chance to travel to some European wine regions and see the winemaking process ourselves. I realized people needed more confidence in their wine selection when I was already working at a professional wine store in Yerevan, Armenia. People would ask me how I helped them to pick the wine they really liked, what criteria I used, how the wine was made, how to pair a wine with a specific dish etc. I started my first events called "Wine Talks" in 2017 (I still have the pics and I remember how enthusiastic we all were). And now here I am, organizing beautiful wine tastings in Italy, talking about wine history and via trivia games educating people. I love seeing confidence in their eyes every time we finish the event. S7 Ep 2092Ep. 2092 Barbera D'Asti: Cascina Castlet | On The Road With Stevie Kim

Welcome to Episode 2092 of On The Road Special Edition. Stevie Kim takes a deep dive into the wine region of Piemonte. Today she sits down with Mariuccia Borio at the Cascina Castlet winery to talk about the winery’s long history and her own involvement since she inherited the estate from her father in 1970. More about today’s winery: An estate is initially a project. And a project is a dream which gradually takes shape, first of all on paper, then on the land and finally, for us, in our wine. Our project starts from two simple ideas: respect for nature and alignment with technological progress. Simple does not, however, mean easy. There have been times when we’ve really had to push forward and others in which we’ve had to stand with our feet planted firmly on the ground; we’ve had to invest in land, technology and, above all, research. This is how we’ve created Cascina Castlèt. The grapes are grown in 31 hectares of vineyards in Costigliole d’Asti. We have concentrated on the land, our land, and on the local grape varieties: Barbera, Moscato, Uvalino and Nebbiolo, but also on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, this last variety having been grown in Costigliole since the late 18th century, when Marquis Filippo Asinari of San Marzano planted it for the first time. Cascina Castlèt has belonged to the Borio family for generations. Mariuccia Borio inherited it from her father in 1970. S7 Ep 2091Ep. 2091 Riccardo Bernasconi | Everybody Needs A Bit Of Scienza

Welcome to Episode 2091, where Prof. Scienza takes questions from the wine community and answers them in his inimitable way! These shows are generally in the Italian language. Today’s question comes from Riccardo Bernasconi Today’s question: Climate change is threatening our industry with a magnitude and speed that we are struggling to understand and to keep pace with. Among many Italian varieties, which could be helpful to counter the change in the last few years? There were talks and experimentations with the so-called PIWI varieties. Could you give us your opinion on them? And, if any, how is the experimentation with these varieties going in Italy and in which regions? If you want to learn more about the Professor: The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” in place of “Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff! S7 Ep 2090Ep. 2090 Sustainability of the screw cap & co. with Walter Massa, Emanuele Sansone, Luca Dal Lago, Guido Stecchi | wine2wine Business Forum 2023

Welcome to Episode 2090, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. In today's episode, we delve into the sustainability of the screw cap & co. with Walter Massa, Emanuele Sansone, Luca Dal Lago, Guido Stecchi Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and we are pleased to present this series of market focus sessions, recorded during the Forum held in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key annual reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. About the session: Viticulture, especially when it is aimed at obtaining quality wines, is now among the agricultural practices with the least impact on the environment. Even the process of obtaining the processed product - i.e., wine - currently poses a relative threat to eco-sustainability. From packaging to waste disposal, particularly plastic, the wine world proves virtuous. However, no human intervention is completely neutral on nature. Winemakers and wine producers in general must therefore also do their part to improve the situation. This session offered by the 5T Academy will outline some initiatives that producers can embrace in order to contribute to a more sustainable wine industry. Innovations in glass processing, for example, today make it possible to produce lighter bottles with the same strength as those made of heavy glass. Moreover, a more sustainable environmental impact can also be achieved by abandoning the cork - which is a physically perfect closure, but biologically and chemically uncertain - in favor of the aluminum screw cap. The latter gives the same quality prerogatives, ensuring the preservation of the wine and facilitating the opening and re-closing of the bottle. Today, on the street between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo monastery complex, Ferrini cultivates six hectares of vineyard, divided into three parcels. The first (at 300 m a.s.l.) is shallow and gravel-rich, while the other two (at 400 m a.s.l.) are deeper, with clay soils. The clones he selected are all low-vigour Sangiovese biotypes that produce loose clusters and very tiny berries. The first bottled wine was of the 2009 vintage. Giodo, the name being a tribute to Carlo’s parents Giovanna and Donatello. The second project of Ferrini family, was in Sicily. In particular Carl falled in love with Mount Etna and its main grapes, Nerello Mascalese and Carricante. Thus began the history of Alberelli di Giodo, with its first vintage in 2016. It is the fruit of eight small handkerchiefs of land, lying at elevations of 700-950 metres, that together make up little more than one hectare. Co-existing with olive and fruit trees, these precious, pre-phylloxera vines have survived for 80-100 years, all trained to the ancient alberello, or low bush-trained, system. All of this is a passion shared with his daughter Bianca, who has worked alongside Ferrini right from the very beginning of rooting his dream in the earth.
