S7 Ep 2176Ep. 2176 Sami Ghosn Of Massaya Winery | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2176 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 168 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is the Lebanese wine maker Sami Ghosn of Massaya winery in the Beqaa, a fertile valley region in eastern Lebanon. More about today’s guest: Lebanon's association with wine is as old as time. It is well established that wine making was already prevalent there thousands of years ago and that it was one of the joys of early civil society. From the first miracle of Christ, turning water into wine, to the Romans who built a temple in honour of Bacchus, the god of wine in the Beqaa valley, this tradition has been continuously present with over 50 winemakers operating today in Lebanon. One of the clear stand-out producers of the new generation celebrating its 25th anniversary is award-winning Massaya. Sami Ghosn, literally a renaissance man. He created Massaya from the wreckage of his family's estate in the Beqaa. Since returning from the United States in 1992 after civil war devastation, he and his brother Ramzi have built a winery in the Beqaa and a fabulous wine resort in Faqra, Mount Lebanon. Sami travels widely to promote Massaya thereby also serving as a roving ambassador for the country. Looking back at his family's legacy, the struggles in the Middle East, and the pride in his homeland, wine has a special significance for Sami. He says: “A glass of wine from Lebanon is more than an alcoholic beverage. It is a message of civilization, resilience, tolerance, and identity”. Since 1910, when they first established their winery in Correggio township (Reggio Emilia province, in the region of Emilia-Romagna), they have never followed the trends or fashions that have driven Lambrusco production in this century and the last. They make their Lambrusco — including their classic method Lambrusco, produced using traditional hand-riddling — the same way they always have: The traditional “dry” style of Lambrusco, with a focus on freshness, brilliant fruit flavors, and food-friendliness. They ascribe their success to their vision of what Lambrusco is and should be. Connect: Website: https://www.lini910.it/ _______________________________ Let's keep in touch! S7 Ep 2150Ep. 2150 Matteo Ascheri of Cantine Ascheri | Wine, Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to episode 2150 of the Italian Wine Podcast, and episode 164 of Wine, Food & Travel with Marc Millon. Marc’s guest today is Matteo Ascheri of Cantine Ascheri, a winery and hospitality complex in Piemonte, in northwest Italy. More about today’s winery: The Ascheri winery was originally established in La Morra at the dawn of the 19th century. It was there, where today there still exists a place called "Ascheri", that the first vines were planted and the first wines produced. In those years, the most important town for the production of Barolo, the best known wine of this area, was Bra, due to its good connections with Turin. Because of this, in 1880 the cellars were moved from La Morra to Bra, where they are still located today. They are the only remaining cellars which can boast this beautiful and ancient heritage. To the La Morra vineyards were added the vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba, Verduno and Bra, with the philosophy that only the maximum respect for their management can create great wines. In the winery, the aim is to obtain a wine which is the expression of the vineyard it comes from, of the grapes it is made from, and, above all, of the ideas of the winemaker. Alongside the winery is the Osteria Murivecchi and the hotel Albergo Cantine Ascheri. Connect Website: www.ascherivini.it Instagram: @ascheri_vineyardsandcellars Facebook: Albergo Cantine Ascheri, Bra More about the host Marc Millon: Marc Millon, VIA Italian Wine Ambassador 2021, has been travelling, eating, drinking, learning and writing about wine, food and travel for nearly 40 years. S7 Ep 2138Ep. 2138 What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market | wine2wine Business Forum 2023
Welcome to Episode 2138, where we present a session recording from the wine2wine Business Forum 2023. Today’s episode is entitled “What you need to know before approaching the US Wine Market” and is led by Mirella Menglide. Italian Wine Podcast is proud to be a media partner of wine2wine Business Forum and is pleased to present this series of market-focus sessions, recorded in Verona in November 2023. wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and wine professionals from around the world, providing an opportunity to network, develop and expand their wine business worldwide. About the session: While the US was a booming market for wines during the pandemic years and Italian wines reached a peak in 2022, overall wine consumption slowed for the second year in a row. Mirella Menglide will discuss how imported wines, faced with a barrage of federal and state government regulations, must find a way to appeal to a new, younger generation of consumers who seem to be increasingly less interested in drinking wine. About the host: Mirella Menglide holds a master’s degree in Foreign Languages and Literature from the University of Bucharest. Fluent in 5 languages, she translated a novel into Italian for the University for Foreigners in Perugia and has contributed to various publications. She also attended a course on International Business Administration at the University of Gothenburg. After working in public relations at a Swedish company, she joined the New York office of the Italian Trade Commission as part of the food & wine sector. At present, she is the Senior Trade Analyst of the sector, in charge of advising Italian companies on US legislation, helping organize promotional and educational activities such as seminars and guided tastings, and participating in trade shows alongside wine and food professionals and press representatives from both Italy and the US. Mirella has been instrumental in ensuring and maintaining the relationships between American and Italian food and wine companies, which aims to result in a broader knowledge, appreciation and, ultimately, presence of Italian products in the US. When not helping Italian companies find a counterpart in the US, Mirella enjoys reading and writing, art, music, traveling, cooking and, of course, drinking wine. Today’s learning objectives: I hope this interview can set a different view on Aglianico and Taurasi. I’m always surprised how ‘unknown’ these wines are beside the well known producers like Mastroberardino, Feudo di San Gregorio or Terredora. You know, once you have a well-aged Taurasi in your glass, you know exactly what I’m talking about! Co-Moderator - Wim Sas Wim Sas, the founder of Wijnkennis in Lille, Belgium, is a renowned wine expert with over 30 years of experience. He recently earned the prestigious title of Italian Wine Ambassador from the Vinitaly International Academy in Verona, a recognition achieved by only a few worldwide. His deep knowledge of Italian wines, including varieties, production methods, terroir, and history, sets him apart in the wine industry. Besides being an importer, he is dedicated to wine writing, wine education, teaching courses for aspiring sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. He graduated in law and worked as a consultant for the public administration. His parents were farmers and his mother Margherita, in particular, always made wine at home, while his father was forced to emigrate to the United States. Giovanni always used to help his mother in the production of ‘Aglianico’ and ‘Coda di Volpe’ wines, which was sold in demijohns. In 2012, Giovanni quit his job and built a new bio-architectural winery next to the house where he was born. He continued to cultivate the family vineyards, about 5 hectares - 4 hectares of Aglianico and 1 hectare of Coda di Volpe. He bottled for the first time in 2016: now, he produces about 20 thousands bottles each year. His goal is to make wines that tell the story of his family and his land: a gentle and elegant wine that respects the vintages and roots, the terroir without neglecting good drinkability. Welcome to Episode 2130 of the Italian Wine Podcast with Stevie Kim’s Ambassadors’ Corner on Clubhouse. In this episode Larissa Lawrence interviews Sebastian Van de Sype, of the Sebastian Van de Sype winery in Modena. Today’s learning objectives: What’s the cultural orientation of Lambrusco? What is distinct and unique about Lambrusco, relative to other Italian wines? How might I enjoy it personally and convey that professionally? Co-Moderator - Larissa Lawrence Larissa Lawrence is the co-founder of Vinos Enteros, a Mexico City-based wine importing and distribution company that focuses exclusively on artisanal producers who make terroir-driven wine grounded in tradition. Vinos Enteros counts the top restaurants, hotels and private collectors across the country as clients. Prior to founding Vinos Enteros, Larissa was a management consultant, media strategist and journalist. Larissa is a graduate of Columbia Business School and a certified Italian Wine Ambassador through VinItaly International Academy. She holds WSET Level 3 Advanced Certification and Level 1 Certification through the International Court of Sommeliers. She’s currently pursuing the WSET Level 4 Diploma. Larissa has been featured on podcasts, articles and panels discussing her point of view on topics as diverse as natural wines, representation of women in the wine industry, differences between wine trends in Mexico and the US and entrepreneurship. She has been invited to compete in international blind wine tasting competitions such as the Left Bank Bordeaux Cup. She is also a wine educator, having taught the WSET Level 2 course in Mexico. It was a conscious choice to embark full-time on this project, together with his spouse, Mary, who is a midwife. The winery started in late 2020, acquiring an organic vineyard in Emilia in the hills around Modena, in Castelvetro, and also making the first vintage. Since then, the winery evolved and recently they inaugurated their own production site. Before starting the winery, Sebastian had been working in the region for two F1 teams and fell in love with the region and its gastronomic opportunities. The Lambrusco wine style was inspiring, especially in terms of growing potential. The spark that ignited the project most probably can be found in his childhood, growing up in a culinary oriented family with the creed “taste thoroughly and choose quality over quantity!”. The continuous search for beauty and quality was in fact an important cornerstone of his education, whether it was in music, sports, study or any other occupation.
