Episode 531: Alysia Montaño – Advocacy with &Mother, Perspectives on Motherhood, & Her Recent Upgrade to 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist

Today, I am thrilled to present an episode that was recorded live in Chicago, in collaboration with Fleet Feet Chicago and Altra. In this episode, I had the privilege of interviewing one of my favorites, Alysia Montaño. Alysia, as you may have recently heard, has been rightfully upgraded to a Bronze Medalist from the 2012 London Olympics in the 800 meters. This achievement comes after two years of world championships where she also received upgraded bronze medals. It’s a moment of celebration for her, yet also a time to reflect on the challenges she faced during those years. We delve into this aspect of her journey towards the end of our conversation. Alysia is a mother of three and a six-time USA Outdoor Track champion in the 800 meters. Moreover, she has emerged as a powerful advocate for women and mothers in sports. Alysia is the founder of ‘&mother,’ an organization dedicated to dismantling barriers that hinder women’s ability to pursue and excel in both their careers and motherhood. This conversation was such a joy to host live with Alysia! Given the timing, our discussion naturally gravitates towards the topic of motherhood. To all those observing Mother’s Day this weekend, I’m giving you all a hug and celebrating you! I hope this conversation brings you joy and inspiration as you celebrate. Episode 530: Jenny Simpson – From World Champion in the 1500m to the Boston Marathon

Today on the podcast, my guest is Jenny Simpson, who just ran the Boston Marathon. She ran 2:31 and was the fourth American and 18th place over all. And this was just 10 weeks after a disappointing Olympic marathon trials where she made the decision to step out of the race at mile 18. We cover that at the end of the podcast. Jenny is a world-class 1500 meter runner. She ran at CU, was sponsored by New Balance for 12 years. She’s now sponsored by Puma. Some of her accomplishments include a gold medal at the world championships, multiple silver medals, a win at a diamond league, a 2016 bronze medal in the 1500 at the Olympics in Rio. And in this episode, we talk about what it was like to decide to run a marathon and to become a marathoner after grinding at the 1500 for so many years and being so good at that distance. Jenny has a lot of wisdom and advice to give us in this episode about what it looks like to try something new and different and also what it looks like to walk through a so-called failure and to get back up and try again. I always feel like I learn so much from Jenny and she’s just got this very honest, authentic and genuine way that she has conversations and it’s such an honor to have her back on the show. Enjoy this episode!

Episode 526: Jackie Hoffman – Founder of Peace Runners

I met Jackie Hoffman at the Chicago Marathon a few years back! I was so excited to learn about what he is doing with Peace Runners in Chicago. He is the president and founder of Peace Runners. Through his own transformation, his vision and inspiration for Peace Runners 773 were fostered. He grew up in Garfield Park and has brought a running program back to the neighborhood that he grew up in. His own childhood inspired him to be a proponent for change. He really focuses on the life expectancy gap, specifically in his neighborhood in Chicago. It is much lower than the average life expectancy in the US. Jackie played football in college and then professionally. Now he is a runner through and through! Tommie Runz: World Marathon Tour; Osaka-Tokyo-Boston-London + a conversation on Sobriety, Grief and life changing decisions.

Today on the podcast Tommie Runz joins me!! I’ve had so much fun getting to know Tommie more as one of the co-hosts of the Relay Podcast. Tommie is about to complete 4 marathons in two months – Osaka, Tokyo, Boston and London which will set him up to have finished all 6 of the World Marathon Majors. This specific time is special to Tommie as he will surpass the age his own Father was when he passed away at 39 years old due to a stroke. Tommie was only 8 years old when he lost his Dad and this moment in time has been something he’s thought about almost his entire life. In this podcast we go deep into what it means to him and what life has been life for him without getting to have a relationship with his Dad. We go deep into sobriety, cleaning his life up and how having a daughter saved his life. Over the years Tommie has established and solidified a community of individuals who share the same passion in running, mindfulness, and self-improvement. He created and founded Chip Time Running to disrupt the current status quo in the running industry; began a podcast “The Run Eat Sleep Show”; and launched the PR Project on YouTube where he sits as co-host. In April 2021, he qualified for the Boston Marathon with a chip time of 2:48:43. As a runner, Tommie continues to chase his goals and aspires to actively improve his times in the 5k through marathon. In doing so, he hopes to increase Black visibility in a predominantly White running space. He now olds a PR of 2:46 and has big dreams to take that down in the future- maybe this fall?? Episode 515: Sara Hall – The Joy of Racing; 5th at the Olympic Trials Marathon, Her 8th Olympic Trials in 20 Years

So excited for ANOTHER Olympic Marathon Trials recap episode with one of my favorites, Sara Hall! Sara is an incredible athlete and human being. She was actually one of the very first guests that I ever had on the podcast. She was all the back on episode 7, 8 years ago!! Sara just placed fifth at the Olympic Marathon Trials a few weeks ago. This was her 8th Olympic Trials. Isn’t that wild?! 20 years ago she ran in her first Olympic Trials in 2004 in the 5000m. Here’s her Olympic Trials progression: in 2004 she ran the 5000m, in 2008 she ran the 1500m, in 2012 she ran the steeplechase, in 2016 she ran both the marathon trials and the 5000m, in 2020 she ran both the 10,000m and the marathon trials, and then this year she ran the marathon trials. Sara is one of the hardest working humans on the planet! We all knew that Sara was going to go for it and put every ounce of effort into making that team. That’s why that 5th place finish is so heartbreaking for her and she says that this one hurts the worst in all of the trials that she has competed in. But I love that Sara is always willing to wear her heart on her sleeve and share the ups and the downs. She has had SO much success in her career with national championships, a second place finish at the London Marathon, and third place at the Chicago Marathon. She has also had a lot of heartbreak in the sport but she keeps getting back up and trying and getting after it! She ran a 2:26:06 at this past race which is a new masters American Record! I love her answer when I ask her about running this record! Sara is sponsored by Asics, married to Ryan Hall, and the mom of four! What we talked about: 3:40- How Sara is doing 5:10- What this race meant to her 7:10- Withdrawing from the Houston half 9:05- Recapping the Olympic Marathon Trials race 14:50- Her mindset crossing the finish line 21:15- What she wanted her kids to take away from her dedication to the sport 24:30- Getting the most out of her running career 26:20- Enjoying the craft of running 27:50- Her training heading into this race 29:00- Breaking the Masters American Record and what being a masters runner means to her 32:00- Her relationship with her husband, Ryan, as her coach 37:25- Advocating to move the start time of the race with the heat 39:45- Being a mentor in the sport 43:45- Managing her emotions after this race 46:10- What’s next for Sara 47:15- Her best race to date Show notes: Sara on Instagram Connect with Lindsey:  Lindsey on Instagram Lindsey on Twitter Lindsey on Facebook  Join the I’ll Have Another Facebook Group Support the I’ll Have Another Podcast on Patreon Follow SandyBoy Productions: Sandyboy Productions on Twitter Sandyboy Productions on Instagram SandyBoy Productions Shows:  Why is Everyone Yelling? Episode 514: Andrea Pomaranski – 27th at the Olympic Trials – Masters Runner and Mom on Resiliency and Dreams

Andrea Pomaranski joins me today after her Olympic Marathon Trials race on Saturday! Andrea has the most inspiring story ever and I am just SO excited to share my conversation with her. Andrea placed 27th at the Olympic Trials in a time of 2:34. She was one of a few masters runners out there at the trials. She is also a 50k World Silver Medalist!! Wow! She has qualified for three Olympic Trials. She got into marathoning after taking NINE years off of competitive running. Andrea was an All-American in college. She is grew up in a very athletic family. All four of her and her siblings competed in D1 Athletics. She is the mom of three. Andrea has a story that her parenthood journey started in a very tragic way, losing her first two babies who were premature twins. She tells this story in the episode and how it has shaped how she views chasing her dreams. She has gone through so much in life and her strength and resilience is very clear in this episode.
