Grant's Rant:6-22-21 Father's day at Torrey Pines teed off not teed up!
bonusFirst, congrats to Jon Rahm who clearly had the course under control at the US Open Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. Good for him as he deserved a victory. Class act he is. But what the hell happened to everyone else? It was horrible golf on the back nine. Teed me off to have to put up with what I was seeing. Bryson DeChambeau shoots a 44? And this is professional golf at the highest level? Rory Mcllroy falls apart and the some of the best golfers on the tour blow up on the course? As a Father's day gift of time to sit and watch some of the greatest players take on the challenge of the course and tournament play, I was disgusted at what I was seeing. Disappointed to say the least. But happy for Jon Rahm and surprised by nearly everyone else. Let me know what you thought about it. I'll look forward to hearing from you on YouTube or Twitter. S2 Ep 75Episode 75: Karma comes a knockin' in the NBA.
There's an old song by the "Lovin' Spoonful" called "Do You Believe In Magic". I say we start singing it with the word Karma replacing the word Magic. Well, maybe you do, maybe you don't but consider this... and I'll go much more in-depth than what you'll get in the notes today but here are the facts:-Rick Carlisle bashes Atlanta for firing Head Coach Lloyd Pierce and Atlanta goes on to win and find themselves deep in the playoff hunt. Rick Carlisle on the other hand led the Dallas Mavericks right out of the playoffs with some dramatic failures and finds himself out of a job. Karma in my mind. -Kyrie Irving. Karma? He's out with a bad ankle, can't play and his tea m loses to the Milwaukee Bucks. I think Karma came aroumd.-James Harden. Too bad about that hamstring but no-matter what, healthy or not, nobody should have gotten too excited because he chokes it up in the big games and doesn't make the commensurate contribution that's necessary when you really need him.And I have to make a comment on Kevin Durant. He did leave it all on the court the last few games. Great to see him acknowledge the Milwaukee players as well at the end of a difficult and very exhausting effort. That was professionalism and a true sportsman. Good to see. Join me for the conversation as I think you'll learn a little, laugh a little and leave with a little bit of a different perspective. Let me know what you think about Karma as well. You can leave a message on my Apple Podcast in the comments section, reach me on Twitter with @grantnapearshow or comment on my YouTube channel. I would love to hear what you think. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-21-21 The animals run wild in the NBA.
bonusWow, what a weekend for the NBA! Surprises for many. Hawks and Bucks go wild. So, can we expect an apology ever, from Dallas Maverick's Head Coach, Rick Carlisle? Recall, he bashed the front office of the Atlanta Hawks for the "insane" move in getting rid of their previous head coach and putting in Nate McMillan in the interim. Looks like it was a pretty good move to me, Rick. How is it watching on TV in Dallas vs on the court in Atlanta? And how about those Milwaukee Bucks? I've been critical of them and did not think they would be able to pull it off. But luckily for them, Harden did what Harden does in the playoffs. Very little. And with Kyrie out, even Kevin Durant couldn't single handedly make it happen. But boy did he give it a great effort. Kudos to him and the class act of recognizing the victors in a well played game all the way thru overtime. And then there's Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia '76ers. Let's talk about him for a minute. And I do, in today's rant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S2 Ep 74Episode 74: Scott Hastings, player and sportscaster, and member of the champion 1990 Detroit Pistons.
Scott Hastings may not be a household name but he's been in and around the NBA for over 39 years. Currently a sportscaster in Denver, he played on a variety of teams over his 11 year NBA career including the 1990 Championship Detroit Pistons. Known as the "bad boys" of the league, they were rough and physical. His teammates included Dennis Rodman, Isiah Thomas and Bill Lambeer. The stories will amaze you as will his transition to broadcasting and also becoming one of the Denver Broncos Play-by-play sportscaster. This is a fun, funny and genuine discussion with a true gentleman. I know you'll enjoy it and come away with some things to share as well. Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 6-18-21 Lebron for NBA Commissioner.
bonusSo Lebron is spoutin' off about his "warning" the NBA there would be injuries due to the players not getting enough rest and playing too much. Really Lebron? What kind of crap is that? Players play in the Olympics and then come back and play in the regular season. They don't seem to mind. YOU didn't seem to mind when you played in the Olympics now did you? And what about the players that play in summer leagues overseas? They don't seem to mind. This was a shortened season due to to the pandemic and yet you're saying injuries are due to too much play? Oh c'mon Lebron. Who are you kidding? The NBA has some of the best trained and most athletic players in sports. Are there more injuries this year than years past? You should know if you're going to make that kind of a statement. If anything, the injuries would be more a result of playing less and not staying in shape. Can you just please, keep your mouth shut and quit trying to have an opinion on everything? Maybe you should be the NBA Commissioner. Then you could speak up. But for now, we're tired of hearing your yappin'. Enough already. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-17-21 Major props, Derek Carr. Major props.
bonusA player, a team and an agreement. Derek Carr is a breath of fresh air in a world of stink in sports right now. Here's the gist of today's rant and for me, it's pretty simple as you probably know. Derek Carr says he signed an agreement. That's his name on the paper and that means he has to fulfill that agreement. He's not going anywhere and he might even consider retiring if he wasn't playing for the Raiders. Now how about that! I've got more to say in today's rant. But I'll bet you knew I would. Good for Derek, good for the Raiders. Good for the sport. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-16-21 Chokers all over the floor last night in Brooklyn.
Well, the Milwaukee Bucks look like they're going to be looking for a new head coach unless something miraculous happens in the next two games. Giannis, when they really needed him to come thru, he didn't. Missed free throws, turnover at the end that could have made the difference, and then an inability for the rest of the team to do anything to stop an unbelievable performance by Kevin Durant. Choking Bucks all over the floor. And then there's Mr. James Harden. I've got a lot more to say in today's rant. Listen and see if you agree with me or not. Learn more about your ad choices. S2 Ep 73Episode 73: Say "Goodbye" Green Bay, he's gone.
I want to share a little about my relationship with a guy I know has changed considerably today on the show and that's Aaron Rodgers. He grew up in Chico, not far from Sacramento where I had my show. He was a big Sacramento Kings fan and knew me as a result. I've seen the change, many have talked about the change, and now, of course, Green Bay is suffering the consequence and embarrassment of the changed Aaron Rodgers. I'll talk more about they guy I got to know a bit more on the show today but I'll go on the record as saying, he's gone. He won't be playing in Green Bay this season and for that, a lot of people are rightfully disappointed. Let me know how you feel about it. Am I right? Wrong? Reach out and I'll be sure to answer. Grant's Rant: 6-15-21 Milwaukee's Moment of Truth.
bonusThis is it. All the pressure is the Milwaukee Bucks tonite. If ever there were a chance for Mike Budenholzer to prove he can get it done, they couldn't be better teed up to do it. Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Greek Freak, needs to show what he's got if he wants to be in the same league as the Durant's and Irving's and Leonard's. It's time or they're out of time. If they can't win this series, look for serious changes. Budenholzer out and a revamp. You agree with me? Can this Milwaukee Bucks team beat a hobbling Brooklyn Nets team? If Hardin comes in, does he dominate or do the Nets falter? Let me know your thoughts. This has been an exciting turn of the table between what was expected and what may be. Grant's Rant: 6-14-21 Le 'Veon Bell is exactly where he belongs.
bonusWhat is up with these guys who go out on social media and then realize what a bad move that was? Then try to correct whatever it was they said and make it worse. Then can't stop trying to convince everyone what they said wasn't really what they said and that they wish they hadn't said it in first place. So Le 'Veon Bell blasts Kansas City Cheifs head coach Andy Reid and then expects some other team to look to him as a good fit on their team? It's not like he's a hot commodity any longer. Folk like Bell really need to look in the mirror and see what the person looking back at them is trying to do. There's only one person responsible for what happens to them and I can assure you that person is the one looking back in the mirror. You can't blame your way to fame. C'mon Le 'Veon, if you're really all that, let's see if you can convince a coach you're a good addition to the team and then if you're fortunate enough to land a spot somewhere in the NFL, let's see you do something. It may be time for you to retire...with or without Coach Reid involved in the decision. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-11-21 Major League Baseball's got a pitching problem.
bonusMajor League Baseball (MLB) is in trouble. The games are b-o-r-i-n-g. Who wants to watch a sport where the very essence of the game, the ball, is not in play? NOBODY!!! I can't even get thru two innings without turning it off. And now the admission is that the pitchers, up to 90% of them, are using a foreign substance to help the ball stick to their fingers thus increasing spin rate. Spin rate impacts the ability of the batter to hit the ball. So, no hits, no balls in play thus boring baseball. Now, if you're caught cheating you get a 10 game suspension. With pay!!! Are you kidding me? That's a paid leave, not a punishment. We're going to see pitchers take the penalty and rest up for another day. What is wrong with this picture? My perspective and more in today's rant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S2 Ep 72Episode 72: The most popular sports voice in Connecticut, Joe D'Ambrosio.
Former Voice of the UConn Huskies basketball teams, yes both men's and women's, ESPN radio host and so much more, Joe D'Ambrosio joins the podcast. How many sportscasters can claim to have called both winning teams in one year for both men's and women's basketball? I think none. Not to mention an incredible career that spans collegiate sports, professional baseball and football and stories from years of experience with some of the greatest players and coaches of all time. And yes, Joe share some of those stories with us today. Some surprises on his favorites from his UConn days, his praise for the dynasty Geno Auriemma has built with women's basketball and a little bit of sports talk on our favorite teams and memories. A legendary voice in a region of the country that claims several city's teams as their own, we laugh and compare notes on players we loved and plays they made. You're going to enjoy the passion and enthusiasm Joe brings to the discussion today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-10-21 Mr. Sensitive is at it again.
bonusEKevin Durant. Here we go again. ESPN announcer Jay Williams shares an episode he had with KD a while back and KD unloads on him. Hard. On social media. In a comparison to Giannis Antetokounmpo that wasn't unflattering, KD goes off saying to never compare him to Giannis again. Along with a few expletives of course. When is Kevin going to grow up and let this stuff stop getting under is skin? He's a superstar just making himself look like a child doing petty, immature things. I say it needs to stop. What are your thoughts? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-9-21 The Diva in Green Bay.
bonusReally now. What has happened to Aaron Rodgers? Great QB, Green Bay hero, solid legacy and certain hall of famer. But judge and jury? C'mon. He's already about to burn $600K in fines and that's OK? It's a bad look for a good guy. What could possibly be going on and if you don't like it that much, buy your own team and do it your way but last I looked, the checks were signed by somebody other than Aaron. Stop the nonsense, honor your contract and do the right thing. If you have an opinion on it, let me know. I'd love to hear what the rest of you think. In my opinion, Aaron is way outta line here. S2 Ep 71Episode 71: Long time Seattle Supersonics voice Kevin Calabro shares his story.
35 year Sportscaster veteran, Kevin Calabro, has really seen it all. From minor leagues to major, Olympics and two stints with fierce rivals, he went from the voice of the Seattle Supersonics to the Portland Trailblazers TV announcer after an 8 year hiatus once the Sonics left Seattle for Oklahoma. Yes, he'll tell his understanding of that story as well as a the bumpy reception in Portland. His career started as many sportscasters of his era with a love of radio, the legendary sportscasters of the day and a love of sports. He may be one of the most recognized voices of the NBA, a committed family man, and a gentleman who knows how fortunate he has been to have built the relationships he has with the players, managers and fellow broadcasters he has had the good fortune to have been associated with. A highlight of the conversation you'll want to hear is his five year plan for the NBA to return to Seattle. I have to say, this was one of my favorite interviews for the podcast. You'll hear why when you pull up a chair and join us for the conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-8-21 Karma is a bitch.
bonusFirst it was James Harden acting like a child in his process to get out of the Houston Rockets. Immature and unprofessional. Now his team is in the playoffs and he's sidelined with a hamstring pull. May not be able to play in the playoffs likley hurting the Brooklyn Nets chances of advancing to the next round. Karma is a bitch James. Then it was Lebron James mouthing off about the play-in program and how stupid it was, not to mention all the hypocritical comments about so many other issues in the news. Well, first round elimination has to be the payback for both Lebron and his team, the Los Angeles Lakers. Yes, Karma is a bitch Lebron. And how about Luka Doncic? He and his owner and his head coach all had a lot to say about the stupid play-in series. There you go Luka, Mark and Rick. Karma is a bitch. And I have to add the asterisk to the mouth of Rick Carlisle on his comments about Atlanta changing out their talented young coach for Nate McMillan. Rick, your team blew a 2-0 lead in the first round and is now watching the rest of the playoffs from home. As a matter of fact Rick, those "insane" Atlanta Hawks with the "insane" front office and "insane" management you were so inappropriately critical of, have now advanced into the second round and have already won their first game. Now how about that? They actually did something that wasn't insane by expecting a different outcome from doing something different vs doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome. Good for them. Bad for you, Rick. Karma is a bitch. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-7-21 A few drunken fools...
bonusWhat's all this noise about unruly fans at stadiums? Really? We have a couple of incidents in the last two weeks, two that have made the press, and you would think the players are being assaulted at every game. Two incidents that have been dealt with as they should have been dealt with. If you're going to serve alcohol, you're going to have drunks do stupid things. Period, end of story. So, here's what I suggest NBA, for the players safety, eliminate alcohol at the arenas and the players will be safe as babies in a crib. But what? You can't do that can you? So let's just tell the players to lighten up. Enough already. This is nothing unusual or extreme and let's have all the fans watch out for those few jerks that have an inability to control themselves., then report them. And yes, I do have more to say about in today's rant so listen up. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S2 Ep 70Episode 70: The depth of character goes deep with Steve Kerr.
My guest today is Scott Howard-Cooper author of the book, Steve Kerr. This is an incredible discussion about Steve's life and how Scott was able to capture the information he needed to capture to produce a book. There's much more that many don't know about Steve beyond basketball and it's not that his basketball career was all that shabby to begin with. He played for nine seasons on the championship Chicago Bulls teams with Michael Jordan. He's passionate about gun violence and for good reason. Scott has done an incredible job of researching a great deal about Steve and I think you'll be surprised to not only hear what Scott found in his efforts to learn what he could about Steve, but additional tidbits that make the man who he is today. It's a fascinating discussion I know you'll enjoy, basketball fan or not. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-4-21 Does De'Aaron Fox demand a trade next year?
bonusSo if you're De'Aaron Fox, and many of the younger rookies are in the playoffs, how long before you say get me outta here, Monte? Think about it. Players all over the place are demanding trades and getting their wishes. Somebody brought this to my attention recently as it wasn't even on my mind. But, reality is the Kings have been terrible. They've had change after change to no positive effect, have made what I and many others would consider awful trades and it all shows in year after year of losing seasons. You can't argue that. For a player like De'Aaron, where's the bright spot? In my opinion, the Kings have one more year to get it together or I would suggest, De'Aaron pushes hard to get out. Let me know how you feel about it. I think Kings fans do have something to worry about because I'm certainly not sure about what next year is going to look like. Bottom line is it had better look good. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-3-21 Atlanta moving on to second round of playoffs? Insane I say...
bonusThat's right. It's insane the way the Hawks have been playing since Nate McMillan took over as head coach. It's also insane that the Sacramento Kings let Bogdan Bogdanovic go to Atlanta. And these playoffs are playing out to where it looks like Rick Carlisle, Dalllas Mavericks Head Coach, the man responsible for the comments on the insanity of the Atlanta front office for such a choice in changing out their head coach and hiring Bogdan, will also be advancing to the second round. Now wouldn't that be something to see these two teams meet in the finals? Hmmm. That would truly be insane! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-2-21 Not a Chip off the ol' block in Atlanta.
bonusSo Marcell Ozuna has a problem and it's not his fingers that are creating an issue. Although Chip Caray appears to intend for you to believe that's the case. (Yes, that's Chip Caray, grandson of Harry, son of Skip.) No Chip, Marcell is likely not in "Injury Limbo" as you call it. Marcell was arrested for aggravated assault strangulation of his wife. His wife may be in injury limbo but not Marcell. He's got bigger issues than just his injured fingers. Yet, you chose to minimize the severity of the charges he's facing and the real reason he's not going to be on the field any time soon. These are serious allegations that were masked by your comments and need to be dealt with as critically in the broadcast booth as they would anywhere else. And I would bet your relatives would agree as well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S2 Ep 69Episode 69: Chris Rose talks sports, a little Cleveland and a lot of fun.
Talk about somebody doing what they love doing, Chris Rose is one of those people. His passion for sports and, of course, Cleveland is evident in his successes throughout his career. The Best Damn Sport Show, Period, Intentional Talk, MLB Network, and now, the NFL Network. Chris shares his story of growing up a Browns and Indians fan and some of his personal memories of family sports engagement. He's also launched his own podcast, The Chris Rose Rotation to occupy his time during the off-season. You're going to enjoy his stories, especially if you've been a fan of any Cleveland sports franchise. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 6-1-21 Kyrie's little dance on "Lucky's" face, not so cool, dude.
bonusYou probably have already heard about the Boston fan who allegedly fired a water bottle at Kyrie Irving last night after the Brooklyn Nets victory over the Boston Celtics. What an idiot! What is wrong with people? Good news is he's been arrested for assault and battery and will be going on trial for his ignorant and immature stupidity. This is absolutely what should happen too and I applaud the Boston authorities for doing the right thing. Now, there was an another immature actor on the court and that was Brooklyns' Kyrie Irving who subtly went over to the Boston Logo and stepped on the face of "Lucky", the character in the logo and then let his foot rub and drag across the face of the character. No accident. Fully intentional. C'mon now! How foolishly immature can you you be? You're a professional and the least you can do is respect the other team's home court. Enough Kyrie, enough. Grow up. Grant's Rant: 5-31-21 In Tennis, it appears rules is rules...right Naomi?
bonusFirst, a special Thank You to those who fought for our freedom and paid the ultimate price as we honor and remember those lost in service to our country this Memorial Day. Now, Naomi Osaka, one of the hottest players in tennis has decided she is not going to talk with the media. And in some sports, that may be fine. But in tennis, it is not. It's an obligation and part of the rules. Less time with the media means more time to possibly gain an advantage with other players who are following the rules. But no, Ms Osaka has a health problem. A mental health issue that she claims is going to need to be catered to and therefore, no media. Hmmm. But playing tennis is front of 20,000 fans doesn't bother you? What do I know? So those responsible have not only fined her $15,000 for not showing up for the media, she may default from playing. That's going to be interesting to see how this one gets handled. And I've got a few more observations up my sleeve you'll want to hear in today's rant. Have a great Memorial Day celebration with friends and family and be safe. Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 5-28-21 Popcorn creates a babbling, blundering ridiculous outburst.
bonusSo Russel Westbrook has a fan dump popcorn on him in Philadelphia. Not cool at all. The fan is apprehended and will be dealt with by authorities with the jurisdiction to do so. But NO, that's not good enough for Lebron James who has decided he wants to be judge and jury, have the fan exposed immediately and what? Yeah, what Lebron? Then what? Why are you even sticking your nose in this situation? Enough already. Get ready for the next playoff game, not the next movie. I'm sure they'll save you some popcorn. S2 Ep 68Episode 68: Tony Bruno, ESPN, FOX and local radio broadcaster talks frankly and candidly about his career.
A 50 year career in the sports broadcasting industry with stints at ESPN, FOX and Sirius XM, Tony Bruno has seen it all. Today we talk about the challenges young broadcasters face, the challenges current broadcasters face and the experience and maturity to to what you believe is the right thing. Tony's career saw him share microphones with the likes of Keith Oberman and Charlie Steiner. Certainly iconic sportscasters of their time. We reminisce, we lament and we look to the future of the industry in a candid discussion from two guys who have put it all out there and taken some lumps for it. This is a high energy discussion I really think you're going to enjoy. Especially if you're from Philadelphia! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-27-21 Hey Olympians, just do what got you there, nothing more.
bonusIn a rare move of leadership, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did what they should do and they took a stand stating: there will be no political, religious or racial demonstrations allowed to take place. Well now. I applaud that move. That's exactly how it should be and I'll watch. And at the first sign of anything other than the sport, I'll not watch. That simple. I want to see the athletic performance and the efforts and the games. Period. And I suspect the sheer reason the IOC is doing this, is because I'm not alone. The Olympic games are just that. Not a forum for athletes to spread a message that has nothing to do with the reason they are there. Respect that and the other countries you're competing with. Agree/disagree? Grant's Rant: 5-26-21 Who blinks first in Green Bay?
bonusAaron Rodgers continues his little game with the Packers front office by not naming names and airing his dirt publicly. He's going to play the spoiled brat routine and just beat around the bush instead of saying what he really wants and what he would like to happen. He wants GM Brian Gutekunst out, or he wants out. Good for Green Bay's leadership in that they aren't leaning into the game. Players, as good as they may be and Aaron is good, don't run the show. There are players and there are managers. The co-exist and a good one of either does not threaten to hurt the team because of an action the other may have performed. Last I checked, neither had "owner" after their names. Get it together guys. Enough is enough. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-25-21 Whoa, now, hold on a minute here...
bonusLas Vegas aces player Liz Cambage lashes out at Connecticut Sun head coach Curt Miller for his offensive comments about her size to a ref during the game. So Curt gets a one game suspension and a $10,000 fine. And apologizes to Liz as well. While Liz goes on social media and gets away with commenting on his size AND his ethnicity and his gender...with, as of this time, no consequence. So in this case, do two wrongs make one right? I don't think so. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S2 Ep 67Episode 67: My Top 5 Greatest NBA Broadcasters.
I love this. I'm going to share with you my top five picks for best NBA broadcasters. You may agree with me or not but I'll give you backup and observations on why I chose who I chose. I'll give you a few in my notes here. #4) Joe Tait..."Have a good night everybody." #3 Bill King...think about this, he called the A's games, the Raiders games and the Warriors games. "Holy Toledo!" And he's a recipient of baseball's highest honor for broadcasters, the Ford C. Frick award. How about #5? Al McCoy. The radio broadcast voice of the Phoenix Suns since 1972. Yeah, that says 1972! He's the longest tenured NBA announcer with 49 years on the air for the same team. And, for all you load management folk, Al has only missed, get this, one game in the entire 49 years. One. That's suiting up and coming to play every day. "Shazam!" Play along and see if you can figure out who I have at the top. You can probably get there on your own but you'll have to listen to find out who it really is. And let me know yours. Grant's Rant: 5-24-21 Two things you thought you would never hear.
bonus1) Marv Albert is retiring. At 80 years old he's finally going to take a break. "The voice of Basketball" has been with us for as long as I can recall and he was an aspiration to me in my career. 2) The NBA is looking into a mid-season tournament. Really? And that would be to what...generate more dollars for a slumping league? The comments range from Why? to NO? to Not interested. It's going to be interesting to see what happens and who cares. Let me know your opinion. You can reach me on Twitter: @grantnapearshow Look forward to hearing from you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-21-21 Has Japan gone goofy over the Summer Olympics?
bonusHow is Japan supposed to host the world for the Olympics in two months despite only 2% of the population being vaccinated? And I'm only referencing the Japanese population. This is a global event and worldwide, Covid is still a major pandemic. Look at India, Indonesia, Brazil to name just a few. And they're going to field teams for the Olympics? What will that bring to Japan? What will those athletes possibly take with from Japan and bring home? Could the Olympics become a super spreading event of global proportion? Who wants to find out? The Japanese population at large, apparently do not as they have a petition circulating that already has over 300,000 signatures. So what to do? It's not too late to make a change in the interest of safety. But... will anyone make that call? We'll have to wait and see now, won't we? Learn more about your ad choices. S2 Ep 64Episode 66: Jerry Reynolds gets real about the Kings season and next year.
Jerry Reynolds recaps the Sacramento Kings season and potential plans for the future of the team and, of course, that means a discussion that includes Marvin Bagley and Buddy Hield. On defense, "they went from Godawful bad to bad". And , by comparison to the other losing season teams last year, only the Kings didn't improve while the other 5 are either playing in or have made the play-offs already. Always a witty conversation and today does not disappoint. And what about the coaching ? You'll have to listen to find out what he thinks. Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 5-20-21 La Russa's distraction dire for White Sox?
bonusThe White Sox are hot and leading the Central Division in the American League. Some things typically stay in the locker room but Tony La Russa was critical of Yermin Mercedes swinging on a 3-0 pitch when they were up by a large margin in the 9th against the Minnesota Twins. I mean 16-4 is a pretty secure win. So the controversy starts about why the manager is critical of his own player. The team seems to have rallied around Mercedes at this point and Tony being Tony is holding his line. If nothing else, this is all an unnecessary distraction to a team that is playing very well, and while I think the world of Tony, he's an old school guy and this seems to be an old school ploy. If nothing else, let's hope it doesn't unsettle whatever is working. Let me know how you feel about it after listening to today's podcast. Is it baseball protocol to back off ? Or is that the "old school" mentality? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-19-21 Tonite's the night...
bonusIs anyone actually rooting for Lebron and the Los Angeles Lakers, besides Lakers fans of course? I'm with Scott Brooks, head coach of the Washington Wizards who loves this process. The excitement it generates is second to none and something sorely needed for the league as a result of the Pandemic. Scott gets it. Lebron does not. And that's only because the Lakers are having to play in. You and I both know if they were seeded at the top, Lebron would think it was genius to have the play in. As I'm sure you have guessed by now, I will not be rooting for the Lakers tonite. Enjoy the game! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: Hey Los Angeles Clippers, Tank You!
bonusSo do I think the Los Angeles Clippers dropped the last two games on purpose? You bet I do. Do I have an issue with it? Normally, yes. I do. But in this instance, no, I don't. So they lose a seeding position but the intention was to avoid having to play a healthy Lakers team in the first round. Smart move. It gives them a chance to see what the Lakers are going to look like in the play in. They'll play Dallas first and hopefully advance from there. So for keeping it interesting, LA Clippers, Tank You! S2 Ep 65Episode 65: Great golf talk with Damon Hack of the Golf Channel.
We met in Sacramento when Damon Hack was working for the local paper, the Sacramento Bee. But from there his career has blossomed to Sports Illustrated and Newsday and The New York Times and we'll learn the story of how he ended up at The Golf Channel. You'll learn about his passion project, Goats and Grapes, we'll talk about golf play, players and the future of the sport. What golf discussion would be complete without a conversation about Tiger Woods? We go there as well and talk about other star players including Rory Mcllroy, Bryson De Chambeau and more. And if you've ever played, seen or wished you played St. Andrews old course, we'll talk about our experiences there. An honest, no BS guy, Damon shares his reality of what he sees as the future of the game, the players and the experiences we can come to expect. Golfer or not, you'll enjoy the conversation. Grant's Rant: 5-17-21 The Sacramento Lotto's aka Kings.
bonusWell, they did it. The Sacramento Kings managed to make it 15 years in a row of losing seasons. Hard to believe but it is what it is. Interesting to see how well they played a few of the last games without De'Aaron Fox, Halyburton or Barnes. Seems as if they really didn't even miss Fox. And that's part of today's rant as well as what to do with Bagley, what to look forward to and why don't they just change the name to the Sacramento Lottery's? Every year, that's what they're all about and finishing where they did brings the team and the city, yet another failed season. Oh, and Walton, I have my suggestion for that too. It's all in today's rant. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-14-21 NBA Play In Tournament means these games count Lebron!
bonusYes, this is going to be a fun weekend of basketball. As a result of the play in tournament, players are going to have to hustle to get their teams into the playoffs. And that means some folk are going to be happy this weekend and some are going to be not so happy. Good job to the NBA for the play in tourney because the games mean something. And I have to acknowledge the Atlanta Hawks who are currently fourth in the East after firing their head coach with a lot of dissent from Rick Carlisle. Nate McMillan was the choice in the interim and he has done one helluva job. Incredible. I can't wait to see how far they can go. All that said, looking forward to talking about the weekend next week as we head into the playoff season with every game counting. Have some fun and enjoy the competition. S2 Ep 64Episode 64: Heart over height. Spud Webb is proof.
Former Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks star Spud Webb is my guest today. Not only is he a former star of the game, he's also been a friend for over 30 years. We talk stories of old and Spud's playing days as well as catch up on what he's doing today in Dallas. Not one to mince words, you'll also get his perspective on today's players vs players from 20-30 years back. You may be surprised at what he has to say. But the biggest surprise comes when you hear his accomplishments and scratch you head as to how a guy only 5'6" could have been so competitive in a league of players over a foot taller. Not to mention that slam dunk capability of his too. He also has an opinion on that as well. Join us. I think you're going to have some laughs. Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 5-13-21 NFL Scheduling..."easy" or not.
bonusSo here's the deal. Don't get yourself all wound up on "easy" schedule or "challenging " schedule. There's no way you can determine that in May. Or June. Or ever. Just look at what would have likely been considered a tough schedule if you were playing the San Francisco Forty Niners last year. Yeah. How did that turn out? Injuries. They're not predictable. They ruin your day, or weekend, or even your year if your team gets wracked. Even all the way to the Super Bowl, ask Kansas City about schedules. Coulda, shoulda, woulda but didn't. Injuries. So, like I said, don't get too fired up about the schedules...yet. Let's see who stays healthy and then start to draw some conclusions about what's easy or not. You'll save yourself a lot of angst. Grant's Rant: 5-12-21 Where oh where do the Oakland A's go?
bonusWell, the time has come. The A's are going to get a new stadium. Where one might ask and that's a very good question. But I can assure you it will not be in Sacramento. Not gonna happen. More on where they may be headed in today's podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-11-21 Oh that poor horse!
bonusYou've heard it by now. The Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit may have had an allegedly "illegal" substance in the blood stream. The post race drug test showed trace amounts of a drug not allowed and now legendary trainer and multi-derby winner, Bob Baffert, has been suspended along with Medina Spirit. And what is he worried about? The horse's reputation. That's right. The animal's reputation. Like anyone cares about that. The horse actually acted on its' own and behaved badly? C'mon. Baffert went on to say that the horse may have eaten hay contaminated by another horse's urine and that tainted his blood. Now for that, I say stupid horse. That could ruin your reputation. S2 Ep 63Episode 63: Officially Perfect.
So you're watching a game, it's down to the last call of the game, name your sport, and the official makes a clearly bad call. Personal foul, pass interference, offsides, you name it. He/she gets berated by the fans, screamed at, harassed and everyone leaves angry. Their jobs are tough, they're not going to be perfect. As a matter of fact, sit down for this one, they're human. That speaks volumes itself. And one of those officials I respect and consider a friend is Tony Brown. He has just announced he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and has begun treatment. Now, are there bad officials out there? You bet. For Sacramento Kings fans you only have to mention Game 6, Lakers, 2002. Enough said. But my point today is to recognize they are, for the most part, consummate professionals doing their job and doing it to the best of their ability. They're upset at calls they make that are wrong, just like when a player may blow a pass, or drop a pass or jump offsides. They do take their work personally. They do take it seriously. But like you and me, they're also human. Some have young children, others have family needs at home. Just like you and I do. So as you're watching your next game and the officiating is bad, remember, they make mistakes too. It's fine to get angry and frustrated and even pissed off but let it go after the game. Officials will never be perfect. And if you get a chance, send some good thoughts to a good guy and good official, Tony Brown. Like every other human in pain, he could use a little hope and something positive right now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-10-21 The NFL Players Legacy.
bonusWell, there used to be a time when a player would stay with one team as long as the team wanted him and he was playing well. And if you could grow old there, it built your legacy. Like Joe Montana with the 49er's or Bret Favre with the Green Bay Packer. Not ol' Aaron Rodgers though, no, he's going to ask that the GM leave.or he retires or gets traded away. This practice has become far too common-place for us to ignore it. The fans lose, the team loses and the city loses when this continues. Don't you agree? Learn more about your ad choices. S2 Ep 62Episode 62: A look back and a look forward with 5 time all-star, Steve Sax.
He was rookie of the year, a five time all-star and has two championships under his belt, Steve Sax has quite a bit too say and one heck of a lot of not only great stories but stories of some of the all-time greats that were his teammates. We talk teams, coaches, Tommy Lasorda and Tony LaRussa, west coast, east coast. The game, the players and the batting today have changed a lot and we share observations and frustrations. Mattingly and Gibson and Ryan were all experiences on the field with Steve, and so many more. We laugh and lament the game. I know you'll enjoy the discussion so join us for a little learning, a little history and a lot of fun. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-7-21 Ruining the beauty of professional sports.
bonusShow up to work if and when you please. Collect a paycheck each year in the multi-millions of dollars. Disregard your teammates, your team, the city you represent and the league that makes it all possible for you. Embarrass those who count on you. Disrespect the leadership that brought you where you are. Disgrace the very people who cover for your unacceptable, inexcusable and irrational behavior. And then, disparage and demean those whose livelihood is based on your input. Yeah. I'm talking about one Brooklyn Nets player in the NBA. Kyrie Irving. But wait, there's more! It's in today's podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-6-21 Hey Sacramento, the Phoenix Suns a likely top seed?
bonusNow how about that? In spite of the picks over the last few years, in spite of the talent of the other teams in the division, and in spite of the star power of much bigger names, the Phoenix Suns are going to end up one of the upper echelon teams going into the playoffs this year. Hmmm. Should have been the Kings but they can't seem to figure it out. In spite of a new GM, and some great talent on the floor. Go figure. Phoenix blunders their draft picks, and still has a strong team. Sacramento take note for next year. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Grant's Rant: 5-5-21 Not again, Lebron, please not again.
bonusMaybe the league's biggest hypocrite is at it again. Still bitchin' and moanin' and gripin' about the play in process. And those mighty Los Angeles Lakers are only one game away from that 7th seed. Can you imagine? If Lebron doesn't like the play in and his team ends up there, he's really going to hate it. Especially if they lose! This is getting interesting wouldn't you agree? Let's talk about it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
S2 Ep 61Episode 61: Aaron is whinin' and Lebron is complainin'. Oh C'mon now.
So what is it really? What do you want Aaron? What soured you on the Green Bay Packers and who do you think you are anyway? Fire the GM? Yeah right. Like that's your call. I sure hope it's not. Just go retire and be quiet. And then there's Lebron James with the Lakers mouthing off again after a couple of rough losses. Too bad bud. Yeah, you're slipping into the lower tier of teams for the "play in" to the playoffs. Funny, when you were top seeded and looking good, you had no problem with it. All of a sudden , now you're screamin' about how stupid it is. We're going to talk about that a bit today as well as sharing some comments from Terry Bradshaw about the NFL QB's. We have a lot in common. Let's talk about it all a bit and let me know your thoughts as well. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
