Grant's Rant: 8-11-21 Luka And The Mavs Going Overboard

bonus

What a scene in Slovenia yesterday as the Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic signed a 5 year extension worth $207 million. Luka said he had no doubt in his mind he'd sign the deal. Yeah no kidding! Mavs owner Mark Cuban couldn't control himself in gushing over Wonder Boy....but that's the way it is now. Ya just can't sign a player, you now have to kiss their ass! Here's what I do know...I haven't seen Luka win a playoff series yet. Rick Carlisle is gone, there is a new front office and there are no more excuses. Yes Luka is a great talent, but it's time he starts winning on the NBA stage! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S2 Ep 89Episode 89: A Rocky Mountain Embarrassment, Peyton Manning + Awful TV Ratings

What an embarrassment for the Colorado Rockies. The organization handled an alleged racial slur at their game on Sunday as poorly as possible. A fan was yelling for mascot "Dinger" and they and others thought the fan was yelling a racial slur. Their statement after the game was embarrassing! I talk about that plus a statement by Tony Clark of the MLBPA which was just as bad. I also share a story about hanging with Peyton Manning one night in Indianapolis. Last, but not least the awful TV ratings from the Tokyo Olympics are announced. What's the reason for that and so many other sporting events losing viewers? Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: NBA Summer League Thoughts

bonus

The NBA Summer League is underway In Las Vegas. I've always thought it's pretty much a big waste of time with the exception for one, or two players on each roster. The NBA has turned Las Vegas into a big event so it's not going anywhere, but most of the games are so boring. With that being said if a player is going to be a good NBA player they better excel in Vegas. If not your favorite team probably made a mistake on draft night. Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 8-9-21 Can We Please Stop With Who's Best In Basketball?

bonus

Team USA wins Gold at the Tokyo Olympics in basketball. Two weeks ago Gregg Popovich didn't know how to coach anymore, the team hadn't practiced enough, blah, blah, blah. The bottom line is the best basketball in the world is played here in the USA . I'm not sure why there is even any talk about it. Both the men's and women's team once again showed their superiority to the world. Imagine if the US sent it's 12 best players to compete in the Olympics like they did with the Dream Team in '92? Anyone still talking about the loss to Nigeria last month in exhibition play? Didn't think so! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S2 Ep 88Episode 88: NFL Teams Dealing With Covid Divide Plus Hall of Fame Thoughts

The NFL began exhibition play with last night's Hall of Fame game between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers. That's the good news, but there seems to be some serious issues with the league's Covid-19 protocols. Several players have voiced their displeasure with the league, coaches have come down hard on their unvaccinated players and already many players have missed practice due to the league's Covid protocol. What happens when they start playing games for real? Look at the QB's who have missed action already including Lamar Jackson and Kirk Cousins. I also talk about fans...are we really sure we will have full stadiums this fall with the rise in cases across the country? I also spend a few minutes talking about this weekend's Hall of Fame inductees including Tom Flores, Drew Pearson, Harold Carmichael and Peyton Manning Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 8-6-21 Can We Please Calm Down About Rookie QB's In August

bonus

Every year I hear about how great rookie Quarterbacks look in practice. Wake me up when the games begin. QB's don't get hit in practice and see the same defense every day. I'm glad that Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers looks like the real deal, but can we please wait until we see him against "real" NFL defenses? How long will it be before we even see him play? Jimmy Garoppolo is the starter and if he plays well and the 49ers are winning don't expect to see much of Lance this season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant's Rant: 8-5-21 Big Time Nonsense from Bryson DeChambeau

bonus

PGA golfer Bryson DeChambeau missed the Tokyo Olympics because he tested positive for Covid-19. Fortunately he's ok and getting ready to return to action today at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Grant's Rant: 8-4-21 Golden State Warriors Resting Rookies Is Disgraceful!

bonus

The Sacramento Kings played the Golden State Warriors last night in The California Classic. The only problem was the Warriors rested both their draft picks Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody. That's right, rested! Why even be part of the event if you're not going to play the rookies? You're telling me the teenagers can't play on back to back nights? Just disgraceful! S2 Ep 87Episode 87: Keith Smart Talks About The Big Shot, Coaching and Life.

Keith is one of my favorites! Got to know him very well when he coached the Sacramento Kings. Keith made one of the great shots in NCAA history giving Indiana the National Championship over Syracuse. We talk about playing for Bobby Knight and what it was like being around Don Nelson when he was worked for the Golden State Warriors. Keith took over for Paul Westphal when he became the Kings Head Coach. I asked him about coaching DeMarcus Cousins and later about his arduous battle with skin cancer. His stories about being in the cancer ward are incredible! Keith is now an assistant coach on Eric Musselman's staff with the Arkansas Razorbacks and he shared what it's like being around such an energetic coach. Grant's Rant: 8-3-21 Relax Sacramento Kings Fans!

bonus

The Sacramento Kings selected Davion Mitchell in last week's NBA Draft. Mitchell plays guard. Many Kings fans were upset the team added another guard. When you're a bad team, a non-playoff team , you need good players regardless of position. In 1985 The Kings selected Joe Kleine instead of Karl Malone, because they had a very good power forward on the team already in Otis Thorpe. How did that work out? The Kings need assets! That's why I didn't understand why they let Bogdan Bogdanovic go to the Atlanta Hawks for nothing. If Mitchell turns out to be a good players Kings fans won't give a darn what position he plays! Grant's Rant: 8-2-21 Parents of Sacramento Kings Players Making Noise Again

bonus

It's normally Marvin Bagley's father that I'm hammering on with my rants, but now it's Aaron Fox, De'Aaron's dad who is in the news. The Sacramento Kings selected Davion Mitchell out of Baylor University with the 9th overall pick last Thursday. Noel Harris of the Sacramento Bee put out a tweet from an NBA Scout praising the selection of Mitchell. Aaron Fox responded no, no, no, no, no. De"Aaron responded on Twitter stating that his dad isn't part of the team and he's a fan just like y'all. My question is why doesn't Marvin do the same thing when his dad embarrasses him on Twitter? Grant-s Rant: 7-30-21 NBA Draft Day Grades Are Ridiculous

bonus

The 2021 NBA Draft is in the books and once again it's time for the absurdity known as draft day grades. My question is why? I give plenty of examples of why this annual ritual needs to go away. Our sports media outlets continue to embarrass themselves with their "expert" analysis. For example the Los Angeles Lakers had the second overall pick from 2015-2017. They selected D'Angelo Russell, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball. The grades were A, A+ and A respectively. None of them are on the Lakers anymore. Just plain stupid! Learn more about your ad choices. S2 Ep 86Episode 86: Jim Peterson's story is truly about heart.

Former NBA player, Minnesota Timberwolves announcer for since 1998 and a heart disease survivor, Jim Peterson shares his incredible story about his first heart attack that could have ended up very differently had he not listened to what the doctor ordered. It's an important message for us that you'll want to heed. But that's just the beginning. This is a discussion with a broadcaster yes, but a former player as well. And Jim played during an era of phenomenal players like Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwan two name just two of his teammates. He shares some fun memories of his time in the league. We also had to have that discussion about who from back then would make it in today's NBA. The answers may surprise you. Grant's Rant: 7-29-21 NFL Quarterbacks In The News

bonus

NFL camps are underway. Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers made it very clear yesterday that he's pretty much running the franchise now. In Baltimore Lamar Jackson of the Ravens tested positive for Covid-19, the second time in eight months he's tested positive for the virus. My question, why not get vaccinated? The New York Jets took the field without their top draft pick QB Zach Wilson. The second overall pick is the only player from April's draft not under contract yet. Grant's Rant: 7-28-21 NFL Distractions

bonus

NFL camps are underway and Aaron Rodgers decided to show up thanks to concessions made by the Green Bay Packers. Isn't it nice that in 2021 star athletes making a ton of money need concessions to go to work? In Houston the Texans begin practice today and we are still waiting word on Deshaun Watson. Will the Texan's QB be on the field? 22 women have filed a civil suit alleging sexual assault and now 10 women have filed complaints with the Houston Department, 8 of whom are part of the civil suit. The NBA draft is Thursday this week. What's going to happen with the Sacramento Kings? Something I sure hope. 7 footer, Bill Wennington and I got to know each other a bit from his time in Sacramento primarily. That's beside the fact that he has Long Island history. And yes, he hails from Canada! Once he figured out the NBA he turned it into a wonderful career. A career that includes three championships with the Chicago Bulls from their heyday. Grant's Rant: 7-26-21 An Olympic Mess

bonus

The Tokyo Olympics are only a few days old and things couldn't be much worse. The Opening Ceremony on NBC drew only 16.7 million U.S. viewers, a 33- year low. As of yesterday 14 athletes had tested positive for Covid and over 100 others affiliated with the games had tested positive as well. Team USA Men's Basketball team was upset by France and people are blaming the coach, Greg Popovich , who I guess doesn't know how to coach anymore. Grant's Rant: 7-23-21 Oh no, not Holmes!

bonus

So it's out there. The ugly truth is leaking out. Richaun Holmes becomes a free agent and he's talking about how nice it would be to play on a playoff caliber team. Well, with him that wasn't the Sacramento Kings this year and without him, it's a sure bet it isn't the Kings again. What on earth is up with this team? First they give away Bogdan Bogdonovic for nothing more than money and no asset, and now, it looks like they could lose Richaun Holmes. He is an absolute shining star on the team. So Sacramento, in my opinion, you need to help Buddy Heald find the greener grass somewhere, help Marvin Bagley find somewhere he can love ( it sure isn't Sacramento) and do whatever is necessary to help Richaun Holmes see there is light at the end of the tunnel if he stays. Can you even think about making this up? The Olympics are beginning to rage with Covid. I have been talking about this for months. Grant's Rant: 7-22-21 Bucks Title Lucky? Come On!

bonus

It's hard to believe, but many are saying the Milwaukee Bucks championship was lucky. In round 2 of the NBA Playoffs the Bucks played the Brooklyn Nets without Kyrie Irving and an injured James Harden. I don't recall anyone on the Bucks blowing off his team the way Harden did in Houston. I also don't recall anyone on the Bucks taking three leaves of absence and making a mockery about talking to the media the way Irving did. I know not everyone can be as classy as Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Bucks handled their business the right way and hey most teams have to have some luck to win a title. There are three guys who are dominating their sport and are easy to root for. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels and Colin Morikawa of the golfing world are doing it with class! You saw it. Game 4 of the NBA finals. That long, lengthy analysis of the game. It had to be what felt like one whole minute. At least. Yeah. A minute. And 12 minutes of commercials. Are you kidding me? Why bother? Who are they kidding? Turn it off and don't even give them the benefit of talking to you. That's when he was at the local radio station running errands and learning the craft. You have to hear his first on mic broadcast story to really get a grasp of how this man has grown his career. Grant's Rant: 7-19-21 What is going on with the NBA decision making processes?

bonus

With the uptick in Covid cases why is the NBA going with a 2-2-1-1-1 format for the NBA Finals this season? Everyone knew the situation before the season began. Before Game 5 a player, coach and referee were ruled out because of Covid protocols. Why didn't they do a 2-3-2 format this season to reduce travel and exposure? Makes no sense. And speaking of the NBA I wonder what Lebron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Mark Cuban the owner for the Dallas Mavericks has to say now that the league has once again implemented the Play-In Tournament for next season? Grant's Rant: 7-16-21 The Olympics are under siege.

bonus

Tokyo alert. I've said it before and I'll say it again. These Olympics should have been postponed again. Japan is surging in Covid cases, many of the countries are surging in Covid cases, even the United States Covid situation is very delicate. Yet, over 200 countries are going to come together, play to empty stadiums and put everyone involved in the Olympics at risk. Brilliant. For what? Money? Ridiculous. S2 Ep 82Episode 82: The Hypocrisy of Double Standards and Cancel Culture.

So Adam Silver, Commissioner of the NBA, tees it all up last week in addressing the significance of all lives being important and walks back a year's worth of comment, criticism and cancellation of so many personalities. Present company included I might add. He goes on to say nobody should lose their jobs, their livelihoods over it. Again, present company has had the experience along with many others this past year. And then we have ESPN hosts being terminated on one hand and other hosts, like Steven A. Smith rattling off what has cost others their jobs. I just don't get it. The NBA, ESPN and other media outlets just can't seem to get it together. Can't seem to make a rule and stick to it. Where does that leave us going into the second half of the year? Where are we as a country headed? Is this what it's going to be like going forward? I for one, sure hope not. After you've had a chance to listen to this podcast, let me know your thoughts. Grant's Rant: 7-14-21 You Really Want Ben Simmons?

bonus

Ben Simmons of the Philadelphia 76ers appears to be on the trading block. Why would the Sacramento Kings, or any other NBA team want Simmons? He just completed his fourth season and still can't shoot. He won't even attempt 3pt FG's and is a career 59% FT shooter. Nobody is going to a game, much less the All-Star games to listen to Ohtani speak. Hey, unless I'm wrong, the millions of us watching are looking at something special, incredible. bonus

So Kevin Durant and Team USA lose to Nigeria in an exhibition game leading up to the Olympic Games Tokyo....My take is who cares? The game meant nothing! Nigeria has some good players, but does anyone really think Team USA would lose to Nigeria if it was the Olympics? The NBA has many players participating in the upcoming Olympics. Has anyone asked Lebron James for his blessing? I mean Lebron said he warned the NBA about starting the season too soon after the NBA Finals last year and that it's the reason for the rash of injuries in the NBA Playoffs. 36 seasons strong and no signs of letting up. That's right, folks, Steve Holman has been the voice of the Atlanta Hawks for over 36 seasons. That's longevity and familiarity with the team! Steve was more than happy to share the enthusiasm for the team and their playoff run this year under just announced, Head Coach Nate McMillan. Steve talks about the transition from Lloyd Pierce and why he thinks the team has done as well as they have once that head coaching position was filled. We'll discuss some of the great players that have come through the organization, as well as, those on the current roster. Johnny Most, the former voice of the Boston Celtics, was a mentor to Steve and there are some great stories he shares. Work ethic, perseverance and an accumulated history of never missing a game is also a topic of discussion. Trae Young, one of the young stars on the team is a necessary part of the discussion and the expectations are really high for him. Months after criticizing the Minnesota Timberwolves for hiring Chris Finch as coach, Rick Carlisle is all of a sudden quiet. Carlisle who is the head of the NBA Coaches Association became the new coach for the Pacers within a week after resigning from the Mavs. He was hired over the phone! bonus

So when a rule is made, somebody, or a collective somebody had a reason for making that rule. Let's not get into the discussion of why or how the rule came to be, just that it's there for a reason. In the case of the Olympics, rules are influenced by all the countries involved, not just the United States. So if you break a rule, own it and suffer the consequences. Or don't break them. Period. He's just going to continue to lie and maybe, somewhere along the line, everything will be OK, as if it never happened. And now that the NCAA is going to allow athletes to get paid for their name, image and likeness, Chris thinks he's absolved. No need to apologize to the University of Michigan. S2 Ep 78Episode 78: I THANK YOU and a look around major league sports on discrimination.

First and foremost, I cannot thank the people of Sacramento enough. I was in town for an event and everywhere I went I was greeted with recognition, excitement and disappointment I was no longer doing my thing. The comments were fabulous. Thank you again. We're also going to dive head first into some optionable items you have to make better assessment of your favorite players, teams and sports when it comes to players of different sexual orientation. It's a lot today but on the heels of the rant, this podcast made sense to revisit the narrative on Carl Nassib, Roger Goodell's grandstanding of the announcement and the reality that so many other players are quietly applauding. Grant's Rant: 7-1-21 Jazz pianist, culinary critic, Phoenix Suns.

For many, it's quite the surprise to see a team that was worse than the Kings three years ago, now in the playoffs. But it's happened and the Phoenix Suns have clinched a berth for the NBA Finals. They've earned it. But there's a sub plot to the story and that is a guy by the name of Al McCoy. If you're a Suns fan, you surely know him. If you're the son of a Suns fan, you surely know him and if you're the grandson of a Suns fan, yes, you know Al McCoy. You see, Al has been the voice of the Suns since 1972. Correct. No typo. 1972. He's 88 years young and has been calling the games for over 49 years. That's an accomplishment far greater than even the Suns making it to the playoffs this year. So, while I don't really have a horse in this race for 2021, I do have an expectation that, for no other reason, getting Al a championship would be a great and well deserved accomplishment. And yes, he's a culinary expert, a jazz pianist and undoubtedly, wholeheartedly, a Phoenix Sun. He's still active and calling games. Just 4 more W's and Al has his last championship as the experienced sportscaster. Way to go, Al! Way to go. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant's Rant: 6-30-21 No light at the end of the tunnel for Kings fans.

bonus

How about it. Three teams, three picks from three drafts ago and guess what? Maybe you've noticed too, those three teams that were all in the gutter three drafts ago were...The Atlanta Hawks, The Phoenix Suns and, guess who? The Sacramento Kings. Three lowly teams all looking for that chance to improve with a solid pick and a development plan to improve. Well folks, guess who the Kings picked three drafts ago? Marvin Bagley, Jr. And do I need to remind you that only the Kings have not improved from three drafts ago? The Atlanta Hawks are in the semi-finals. The Phoenix Suns are in the semi-finals and the Sacramento Kings, they're still in the gutter. They didn't even make it into any round of the playoffs this year. Again. So, one has to wonder, how long is that tunnel before the Kings see any light at all? I say more in my rant but in my opinion, that tunnel is so damn long, Kings fans can't even see the flicker of light yet. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S2 Ep 77Episode 77: Mark Boyle, long time voice of the Indiana Pacers shares some stories.

Mark Boyle has seen quite a bit in Indianapolis during his 33 years as the voice of the Pacers. To name just a few, he was broadcasting when the fights broke out during what became known as the "Malice in the Palace". He's seen a myriad of coaches weave their way through the town including Larry Byrd and Nate McMillan. We'll talk about some of the high profile players like Reggie Miller and Ron Artest. We even touch on the sport itself and if the NBA is in need of a refresh. Is the three point shot taking something away from the game? The city of Indianapolis, the vibrancy of its' core, its' sports teams and successes... including some of the reasons it is the way it is. I feel like I got a bit of a history lesson about the state and the city. I think you're going to enjoy our conversation. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant's Rant: 6-29-21 Damian Lillard takes heat for a non-story.

bonus

Today's rant should not exist. There. I said it. This is something that could only happen in today's crazed social environment and it appears that Damian Lillard of the Portland Trailblazers is taking the heat. He's getting blasted for his comments on the acceptance of a few names for head coach of which Chauncey Billups was one. Evidently, there was a sexual misconduct charge that was settled through a civil action over 20 years ago. And Damian was supposed to have known this? He was about 7 or 8 years old at the time. Yet, here we go again from those who have nothing better to do than dig around and make a stink by accusing him of endorsing a sexual perpetrator. You have got to be kidding me. I lay it all out as best I can tell in today's rant but don't be surprised if this is enough for Damian to push for a trade that has already been offered by the NY Knicks. What a shame. What a pathetic statement of where we are today in what social media can cause to happen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant's Rant: 6-28-21 Jay Williams ghost posts.

bonus

By now, you've probably heard about the pickle Jay Williams of ESPN finds himself in. After tweeting that Ime Udoka is the first head coach of color for the Boston Celtics, he then responds that somebody stole his password and posted that. Not that he was "hacked" and not that he's going to make every effort to hold whomever did this accountable. The issue is that Ime is not the first, second third or fourth coach of color for the Celtics. He's actually the fifth. So Jay, not only did you not know that Ime wasn't the first, but clearly, you don't manage your own Twitter account. And whomever does, does not do their homework. Embarrassing enough but who has been posting for you? Hmmm. I think it's time for a little truth be told. For you, for ESPN and for the insult to both Ime and the Celtics. How are you going to handle it Jay? The world of sports is listening and waiting. Albeit with only one ear.... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we get to share stories about what he sees on the Mavericks with a competitive team and a great roster including Luka Doncic. We even touch on the Dallas Cowboys and what he sees the team doing going forward. You might be surprised here as I may not be so quick to agree. Always a good conversation when you get an east coast and Texas couple of guys together to talk sports. I mean really now, can anything great come out of Texas? Join us as we learn a little bit more about and from a truly great guy and sportscaster from Dallas. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant's Rant: 6-25-21 Marvin does it again.

bonus

The title of today's rant pretty much says it all only this time it was really about as dumb as it gets. We all know Marvin Bagley and his "supportive" family have an issue with Sacramento. That's not much of a secret but now the full truth is out and Marvin wants out of dodge. He's removed the team from his social accounts and "liked" a tweet suggesting he needs to get out of Sacramento. Even though who the heck would want him? We're not sure he's as good as he thinks he is, or as his daddy thinks he is or as his uncle thinks he is. Heck, he's never been healthy enough to play out a season and when he was playing, well, we're just not sure. Marvin, I sure hope you're NOT playing for Sacramento next year as the market is beginning to think you and the circus surrounding you are all clowns and if you do show up on the court, the Kings loyal will boo you off the court. Which is exactly what they should do. Grow up and go away young man. Goodbye. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Grant's Rant: 6-24-21 When does 2 minutes equal half an hour?

bonus

If you're like me, you like to see things move along in their normal course of action with little interruption. Like basketball or baseball or football. But in every sport, the instant replay is getting in the way and slowing the game down as well as any momentum a team may have been getting going into the replay. The noise on the Phoenix Suns vs LA Clippers earlier in the week where the last two minutes of the game took 30 minutes, yes, count 'em, 30 minutes, a full half-hour to play out the last two minutes is ridiculous. Especially in the last two minutes where every little bit of momentum makes a world of difference. This has to stop or the league is going to continue to lose viewers if for no other reason than they got tired of waiting. I want to know how you feel about it to text me, hit me up on YouTube and leave me a comment. You know where I stand, I would love to hear from you. Learn more about your ad choices. Grant's Rant: 6-23-21 Josh Smith exposes a dark side.

bonusE

Apparently, Josh Smith has an issue with previous coaches and this time it's a vulgarity laced rip on Doc Rivers and his performance in game 7 against the Atlanta Hawks where his Philadelphia 76ers simply fell apart. Smith squarely sets aim on Rivers as a phony. In an embarrassing and disgusting use of language, including the "N" word prolifically, Smith blames and bashes Rivers for his lack of in-game adjustments and then attacks him personally as well. I've got quite a bit to say about this but the bottom line is how embarrassing and low are things going to get in the NBA when this is what fans and even kids are hearing from former players? How low have we stooped generally in society when this is the kind of attention these people get? I'm disgusted and this is truly disgraceful to the NBA, the players and the coaches. I think Josh Smith is cementing his legacy in showing who he really is and diminishing any of the positive things he left on the court. A shame. Learn more about your ad choices.
