S13 Ep 255255. Sally McRae, Ultra Runner
Welcome Sally McRae AKA Yellow Runner back to Hurdle! We're celebrating, because this week Sally adds "author" to her impressive multi-hyphenate with her new book, Choose Strong. She talks to me about what that title means to her, reflecting on a journey that's been filled with #hurdlemoments — from growing up in an emotionally and physically abusive household and losing her mom to cancer to working multiple jobs. She also talks to me about her experience at the Cocodona 250, an ultra-marathon in which she navigated injury from mile-7 onward, and what resilience means to her. Plus: How she's planning to bounce back before her next ultra in Tahoe in just over a month, and what other fun things we can expect from her content moving forward. S13 Ep 254254. Nell Rojas, Runner
Nell Rojas has some big goals. Goals that she's committed to, and over the last few years she's learned exactly what that commitment entails. The Boulder native is at a place in her life where she's accepted the opportunity costs (like prioritizing sleep and turning down social events) to excel in her sport — and it's working. The former triathlete is a sub 2:30 marathoner (that's faster than a 5:40 pace over 26.2 miles), coached by her father who was one of the first athletes to run for Nike, won the very first BolderBoulder, and held the world record for the 15K. For episode 254, she talks about how that impacts their relationship, how owning her own coaching business makes her proud (and the lessons entrepreneurship has taught her), and what she's looking forward to next. S13 Ep 253253. Steph Catudal, Author
Eighty-four days. That's how long Steph Catudal's husband Tommy Rivs was in a medically-induced coma during his battle with lung cancer. Today, she's on the show reflecting on that and more — coinciding with the publication day for her new memoir, Everything All At Once. In today’s episode, Steph talks about what it was like when Rivs became ill and was put into coma at the height of the pandemic, and what happened as a result of that. She also brings us to her childhood, talking about the struggles of losing her father to cancer as well as navigating her relationship with faith. Her words are truly remarkable. I started following Steph like many as Rivs story made headlines back in 2020, and I’ve always been so drawn to both her writing and her strength. I ask Steph about how she’s managed the influx of attention, what it was like to mother her three girls when she felt at her lowest point, as well as how she takes care of her, and her feelings on hope when life feels grim. For those unfamiliar with Rivs' story — he is now 2+ years into remission; something truly miraculous after the most hard-fought battle. We rap about tips for making friends and best-practice strategies that have worked for both of us. We also talk about the importance of not having surface-level relationships, and how to know when you should walk away from a budding friendship that may not be serving you. #HURDLEMOMENT: How To Become a Morning Person
Mornings are pretty polarizing, right? Either you love them and fully embrace the phrase “the early bird gets the worm,” or you’re more of a snooze button enthusiast. The moment that I met Yuma Haidara through the team at Oofos in preparation for our Boston Marathon event, I knew I needed to sit down with her for the show. S13 Ep 247247. Viola Cheptoo, Pro Runner
This week I’m bringing you my conversation with Viola Cheptoo, a professional runner for Adidas who is — if you’re tuning in on marathon Monday, April 17 — perhaps running the Boston Marathon as you listen to this. She talks to us about the ebb and flow of her love for sport and running, originally motivated large in part by her brother, fellow elite Bernard Lagat. She talks about what it was like to debut in New York and come in second place, plus her big hopes for this year’s 26.2 in Boston. However, a large part of our conversation focuses on sensitive topics including body image struggles, including what it was like to navigate bullying and abuse from a young age — both at school and within her home, as well as the tragedy surrounding the killing of her dear friend and fellow runner Agnes Tirop. Viola has made it her mission to speak out about domestic and gender-based violence as a result of the tragedy, through her work with a non-profit Tirop's Angels. Although a lot of the topics are difficult, Viola’s outlook is truly one of optimism and hope. I’m so grateful that we were able to connect here in Boston leading up to such a big moment for her! S12 Ep 244244. Elizabeth Cutler, Co-Founder of Peoplehood & SoulCycle
To say that Elizabeth Cutler has been a major influence in the wellness industry would be a drastic understatement. The SoulCycle co-founder has been name-dropped on this show dozens of times by other founders as an OG inspiration. And today, I'm catching up with her to talk about her newest company with co-founder Julie Rice, Peoplehood. Described by The New York Times as "SoulCycle without the bikes," you can think of Peoplehood's gathers (that's what they call a class) as fitness for your relationships. Elizabeth fills us in on the benefits of this type of communication opportunity, why she believes the concept is more important than ever post-pandemic in the midst of a global loneliness crisis, and her hope for the company moving forward just a week after opening their Chelsea flagship. Plus: How she got through the emotional difficulty of stepping away from SoulCycle in 2016, and the best-practice advice she'd give any aspiring entrepreneur.
