S14 Ep 267267. Victoria Arlen, ESPN Host, Paralympic Gold Medalist & Speaker
Victoria Arlen is no stranger to hurdles. At age 11, the now-ESPN host developed two rare conditions known as transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. As a result, she quickly lost the ability to walk, speak, eat, and move. She slipped into a vegetative state, and her parents were told numerous times that they should “let go” and that their daughter would never be the same. Fast forward four years, and Victoria beat all odds to make a miraculous recovery. She returned to life, albeit in a wheelchair, and soon found success as an athlete scoring a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2012 London Paralympic games, as well as her dream job at ESPN — reporting for the X Games and Special Olympics. In today’s episode, she talks about the biggest miracle of all: defying the odds yet again and after spending nearly a decade in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down, to learn how to walk — and ultimately dance and run. She talks about her stint on Dancing With The Stars, the non-profit she started with her mother to help others get a second chance at life, and how she stayed optimistic even in her darkest days. #HURDLEMOMENT: How Much Protein Do You REALLY Need? (& Other Protein-Related FAQ)
Lately, protein feels like the hot topic on social media. And that's because, according to Michelle Pillepich, a registered dietitian, it's the only macronutrient that hasn't been demonized. She's back on the show today to answer all of your protein-related questions: How much do you need? What are good sources? Is there such a thing as too much? What happens if we don't get enough? And what's even the ~purpose~ of consuming it at all? #HURDLEMOMENT: An Expert On How To Reduce Inflammation In the Body
Leading into my next marathon training block, I decided it was smart to do a blood test via InsideTracker. As a result, I asked Michelle Darian, RD and Marketing Manager for Science and Product at InsideTracker on the show. This is so much bigger than interpreting ~my~ results, though. For this episode, we focus on understanding what inflammation is, why we want some (but not a lot), and how to reduce or lessen it in a safe way via both environmental and dietary shifts. Plus: Why we need to be cognizant about what's going on in our bodies, how iron and ferritin can impact women — especially within exercise, and more. Ajla Tomljanović knows the hardships of injury all-too-well. For this week's episode, I sit down with one of the best tennis players of her time to chat about the highs and lows of taking time off, and how it feels for her to take a back seat after a runaway year in 2022 defeating legend Serena Williams in her final match at the U.S. Open. She shares a lot about her mentality on and off the court, plus how it feels to have so many eyes on her as a rising star. Plus: How she knows when the "right" time will be to get back into the game after a nagging knee injury, and why she adores training with Omorpho's weighted gear.
