The first ecumenical council, the First Council of Nicaea in 325AD, was a pivotal moment in Christianity. Once the Creed of Nicaea was defined, the bishops at the Council had a number of important issues they needed deal with. The bishops at the council created twenty canons, or rules of faith that created the guidelines the clergy and the laity would follow going forward. Constantine’s purpose for calling an ecumenical council was to stabilize and unify the Roman Empire. For many reasons, the Empire was neither stabilized nor unified. Theological battles were raging inside of the Empire and groups outside of the borders of the Empire were on the move. A bishop variously named Ulfila, Wulfilas or even Orphila was central to all of these critical historical movements of the fourth century. The creed or statement of beliefs from the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea was what the whole thing was really about. The Church and Constantine had a whole agenda of other various gripes, issues and complaints they needed to address, but the creed or basic beliefs of the Church and by default mainstream Christianity was the main event. Arianism might not have been the idea of Arius of Alexandria alone, but he was the one who definitely popularized that set of theological positions. Meletius of Lycopolis may not be a household name, but this bishop from the middle of Egypt set the wheels in motion for the necessity of a Church wide council in 325. There were so many problems in the Egyptian Church, which magnified problems in other local churches, the Emperor Constantine felt he had to step in. Meletius of Lycopolis, probably inadvertently, gave the firebrand preacher Arius a perfect platform to spread his ideology. Alexandria and Antioch were major centers of Christian learning and Origen highly influenced both schools. Origen was one of the greatest Christian theologians of all times, but had many ideas which were considered somewhat questionable by both his contemporaries and later thinkers. Arius didn’t develop his theology in a vacuum, instead there were a number of thinkers and theologians who influenced him. Two of these people were Paul of Samosata and Lucian of Antioch. Each of these men had ideas that were outside of the typical Orthodox mainstream, but would become quite popular in time.
