Ep 119[Special] Starter Stories: Meet the Founder Building Slack for Colleges and Universities

This podcast is brought to you by Element451 — the next-generation AI student engagement platform. Learn more about how Element451 can enhance student engagement, boost enrollment, reduce expenses, and increase staff productivity. In just a moment, you’ll meet Kavitta Ghai Co-Founder of Nectir, an edtech startup that brings Slack-like workspaces into every college and university classroom.Kavitta was pretty much born an entrepreneur…her very first hustle was in elementary school when she started selling stationery. She’d collect letterhead and envelopes from her father’s office and then sort into near bundles which she’d sell to her classmates. In her freshman year at UC Santa Barbara, she was introduced to Slack by one of her professors who decided to use it as a way for the class to ask questions and share ideas. Kavitta was amazed at how superior her learning experience was in that class compared to her other classes…Slack transformed that 200 person lecture into a dynamic learning community. And that’s when she started thinking…why wasn’t there a tool like Slack for every college class? What if every student at a university could join a channel for each course they enrolled in every semester? Could this better the learning experience for students? And perhaps even cut down on the time faculty and TAs spend answering questions about the course material? And it was these questions and others like them that ultimately led Kavitta and her Co-Founder Jordan Long to build Nectir. Alright, get ready to meet Kavitta Ghai. - - - -Connect With Our Host:Mallory Willsea https://www.linkedin.com/in/mallorywillsea/https://twitter.com/mallorywillseaAbout The Enrollify Podcast Network:The Higher Ed Pulse is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Network. Ep 109Episode 109: How to Empower Graduate Admissions Professionals to Design and Execute Digital Recruitment Strategies

Historically, colleges and universities across the country have thought about graduate student recruitment as second in importance to the traditional undergraduate student population. As such, graduate enrollment management teams tend to be under-resourced when it comes to time, money, and talent. But tides could be shifting as fewer students are going to college and as schools across the country are still recovering from losing significant revenue due to the pandemic. In this episode of The Enrollify Podcast, Zach sits down with Adam Poluzzi, the Assistant Vice Provost of Graduate Enrollment Management and Brett DiMarzo, the Director of Graduate Enrollment Management Strategy, at Boston College. The three discuss a new division Boston College has launched as a part of the Graduate Enrollment Management team to help support graduate admissions professionals with the tools, insights, and resources they need to design and implement digital student recruitment strategies. Ep 106Episode 106: How To Design The Future Of Graduate Enrollment Management

Marcus Hanscom is an incredible thinker with progressive insights about the future of graduate education and graduate student recruitment. On Enrollify’s recent Podcast Roadshow around New England, Zach sat down with Marcus to discuss the future of graduate enrollment management. Marcus talked a lot about incentive alignment. Graduate education needs to be more agile, advanced degrees that meet the continually changing demands of today’s market need to be spun up quickly, but, in order to do so, you need faculty to be on board! So, in order to encourage faculty members to create new graduate programs in a timely fashion, institutions need to find ways to ensure departments that if they meet their enrollment goals, the department will be rewarded with more resources. Marcus also talked about how over the next few years, the infamous, looming 'Higher Ed Enrollment Cliff' will arrive and many institutions will likely turn to graduate enrollment to help make up for this loss in revenue. But, graduate enrollment management needs resources now to prepare for this moment. Waiting until the cliff hits hardest just might be too late.Learn more about this episode and about our sponsors in our show notes. The student journey to enrollment is increasingly multidimensional. Ep 104Episode 104: How To Cut The Cost Of College In Half — And Better The Student Experience In The Process

During one of the most tumultuous seasons in the life of higher education, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) cut their campus tuition in half — and claimed that students could still get the same high-quality education and campus experience, at a radically more affordable price. On this week’s episode, we talk with Tim Whittum, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management at SNHU, about the radical ways in which the university is rethinking the modality and flexibility of higher education and what this means for the future of student recruitment. Tim and Zach posit that schools will need to get much more creative and specific about their value offering in order to stay relevant and competitive. The two also riff on ideas around how schools with predominantly online course offerings may get innovative and launch pseudo-campus environments...perhaps something like a “co-learning” space that is somewhat akin to a “co-working” space? You won’t want to miss this riveting episode which is a part of the Enrollify Podcast Roadshow series!Learn more about this episode and about our sponsors in our show notes. The following statistics allow you to understand the breadth and depth of data we scoured that is the backbone of this report. The way schools used to rely on physical, in-person recruitment events has dramatically changed over the past few years, but has been especially impacted since the start of the pandemic.Grad school fairs are no longer the mass-recruitment lead source they once were, and schools have moved to hosting their own information sessions and open houses. The biggest change in the last year is the predominance of virtual events as a result of the pandemic, which means we now have more data on virtual admissions-related events than ever before to analyze and identify the new benchmarks. Before the pandemic, virtual events typically achieved 25-40% attendance rates out of registrants, but as you will see in the report, more students are signing up and attending recruitment events than ever before.Learn more about this episode and about our sponsors in our show notes. Get ready to meet Elizabeth Johnson — Co-Founder and Chairman at SimpsonScarborough, one of the leading market research, branding, and design firms serving higher education today. In her senior year of high school, Elizabeth thought she’d go and study psychology in college. But, after a conversation with her father who was footing the bill, she learned that she had two different major options before her — pre-med or mathematics. And while she chose the latter, her favorite college class was actually an art history course! After graduating, she went to work at a small market research firm before joining Carnegie Communications, now Carnegie Dartlet, where she worked for 10 years and served as COO until she received a phone call that would change her life forever.Christopher Simpson, the former Vice President and Spokesman for Indiana University who had been in charge of handling Bob Knight’s departure as a Hoosier back in 2000, asked Elizabeth to lunch to discuss an idea he had. That idea would lead to the founding of SimpsonScarborough. Elizabeth didn’t know it at the time, but just a few months after the company was founded, Christopher received a terminal cancer diagnosis. Tune in to hear the inspiring, challenging, and remarkable story of the birth and growth of SimpsonScarborough.Learn more about this episode and about our sponsors in our show notes. Ep 91Episode 91: How High School Juniors are Feeling About Their College Search Right Now

On this week's podcast, Zach sits down with Will Patch from Niche and Jeremy Tiers from Tudor Collegiate Strategies to discuss a survey they recently conducted of high school juniors.A total of 7,129 juniors responded to the survey and expressed their hopes, dreams, and fears about their college search process in a (soon-to-be) post-pandemic world.Tune in for a fascinating discussion on what these survey results suggest about the future of higher ed marketing and student recruitment. Some noteworthy stats from Niche:1. 75% of juniors believe that their chances of being accepted will be hurt if they do not submit test scores with their application to test-optional and test-blind colleges.2. Nearly half of students reported that they had already taken the SAT, ACT, or CLT; and amazingly only 6% reported that they don’t plan to take a test. Of students who have taken, or plan to take, a test, 96% plan to submit the scores to some or all of their colleges when they apply.3. 25% of juniors have already narrowed down their list of schools, while another 68% are actively doing college research. The majority of juniors reported actively started researching colleges between the summer before their junior year and the spring of their junior year.Learn more about this episode and about our sponsors in our show notes.
