Does it Scale?
How does the behavior scale? **NEW: Text MG direct your toughest #habits and #goals questions now: 619-547-1915 The Habit Factor® "5-Day Challenge" ENDS THIS WEDNESDAY 10-28-20! Because all exercises and live sessions are recorded, you can still sign up today: https://thehabitfactor.com/challenge Today's MBM brings us to the idea of compounding behaviors. It's fairly trendy to hear entrepreneurs talk about "scaling" their business, and about the importance of business models that will scale. If you can make a profit with 10 customers, it stands to reason you want to be able to get to 1,000 customers as effortlessly as possible. The right "model" will allows that, but the wrong one? Well, it will just create a nightmare, or in a best case scenario will be limited in its growth potential. When it comes to our behaviors, it's certainly worth asking some similar questions: "How does IT scale?" In other words, how does that one behavior scale? What will the compounding effects of that behavior be in a year, or even better, five years? A pack of cigarettes a day? How does that scale? Ice cream every night before bed? How does that scale? Arriving habitually late to work? How does that scale? You get the picture? Our choices should or could be better determined by asking that simple question: How does IT scale? This goes for questionable decisions that might be better guided by the same simple question. How does it scale? Enjoy the episode! **NEW: Text MG direct your toughest #habits and #goals questions now... 619-547-1915 The Habit Factor® "5-Day Challenge" ENDS THIS WEDNESDAY 10-28-20! The MAP
"The map is not the territory." ~Alfred Korzybski **NEW: Text MG direct your toughest #habits and #goals questions now: 619-547-1915 The Habit Factor® "5-Day Challenge" starts THIS THURSDAY 10-22-20! Sign-up today: https://thehabitfactor.com/challenge Alfred Korzybski was a Polish-American independent scholar who developed general semantics, which he viewed as both distinct from, and more encompassing than, the field of semantics. He argued that human knowledge of the world is limited both by the human nervous system and the languages humans have developed. (A topic previously covered here: https://podcast.thehabitfactor.com/language-and-thought-s4-49/) Thus, Korzybski posited, no one can have direct access to reality, given that the most we can know is that which is filtered through the brain's responses to reality. The Value of Emptiness
"The mind is for having ideas, not holding them." ~David Allen *Important Note*: The "GET UNSTUCK 5-Day Challenge" begins 10-22-20! Sign up today: https://thehabitfactor.com/challenge A cup is designed to be empty, not full. Its value comes from being able to fill it up. This is true for minds, as well. Keeping an open and empty mind allows for creativity, innovation, and learning. MG shares the classic parable about the Zen master who pours tea for his student and just keeps pouring—even though the tea is spilling out of the cup onto the table and floor. The student jumps to his feet. "Master," he screams. "My cup is full already!" "Then you see," says the master. "I, too, cannot put anything in your cup if it is full already." Learning new languages tends to be much easier for young children, not because they're smarter, but rather because they don't come with preconceived notions, judgements, and opinions about what they will learn or even how they will learn it. The key to keeping an empty mind is to dispose of thoughts that aren't serving you, writing down ideas so they don't fill your mind. With a clear and empty mind, you'll be far more at peace and hold more creativity. Enjoy the show! *Important Note*: The "GET UNSTUCK 5-Day Challenge" begins 10-22-20! The Habits That Really Freakin' Matter
"To go far you must begin near, and the nearest step is the most important one." ~Jiddu Krishnamurti One of the reasons it's called, The Habit Factor® is because the habits we perform most often, powerfully compound over time. Where you are right now, is the result of your habits compounding. Nobody becomes rich or fat overnight. (lottery aside) Small actions compounded (over time) reveal massive results (positive or negative) (excerpt, The Habit Factor® 2010) Today's episode is a classic reset for The Habit Factor and we're gonna add the explicit tag just in case; "What are the habits that really freakin' matter in our life? Give that question some thought and the best answer can only be; the habits you perform the most. So, what are they? MG runs through a wide array of habits beginning with our breathing. Breathing, he points out, only influences everything. Then there is your THINKING. And, categorically, our thinking about important aspects within our life, ourselves, our self-concept, others and even the world at large. Then there are our wellness habits. Our habits of diet, exercise and sleep. These are perfect examples of habits that compound the most. Then consider our relationship habits. If relationships constitute up to 85% of our life's happiness, what relationship habits are you practicing? Enjoy the show! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. Complications
"The smarter the person, and the smarter the device, the greater the complications. This episode's original title was "Simple Truths," because wherever you find real challenges in your life, the answers are often simple. Instead, we decided to call it "Complications," inspired by the Apple Watch, which refers to its smart device apps as "complications" when they're displayed on the watch face. Why would they call this device's apps complications? Because as feature-rich and helpful as they are, they complicate the device's original mission: telling time. Life is similar. If we have financial troubles, chances are all we have to do is remove the complications and find the simple truth: Why aren't we paying ourselves first? Too much drama in your life? What complications could you remove to restore peace? Often, the answer to our problems lies in the power of LESS—fewer complications. Think about your biggest problem. What simple truths lie at its core? What complications can you remove? Paring things down to simple truths may seem difficult because life's distractions make it hard to concentrate and find focus. Our phones beep alerts constantly and our attention is fragmented. But when we eliminate the noise, the simple truths become glaringly obvious. We may think goal achievement is difficult, but the simple truth is, where is your habit-tracking data? To stay on track, you must be tracking—a SIMPLE truth! We seem to love unintentionally complicating our lives. The smarter the device—and the smarter the person—the more complications arise. It's critically important to remove complications and find the simple truths. Enjoy the show! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. The Error Log
"Where is your error log?" A number of professions require error logs. The way programmers improve their software is to review the error logs. The way pilots become better is to review logbooks. To keep and review a personal "error log" is just another way to affirm the importance tracking our habits, journaling and documenting our efforts as we move toward our goals. Without a log of our efforts, it's hard to identify a trend and know what is effective and what isn't. Where is your error log? The Trash Can
"What he wanted most of all was a large waste basket to which he could consign all his false starts and mistakes." ~Walter Isaacson (Einstein: The Man, the Genius and the Theory of Relativity) How big is your wastebasket? How many false starts and mistakes do you create on any given day? [Excerpt] When shown his corner office at the institute (Princeton) Einstein was asked to indicate what he may need in the way of equipment, his requirements were not onerous, just a bit of office furniture and some stationary. What he wanted most of all was a large waste basket to which he could consign all his false starts and mistakes." Imagine being asked about your new office requirements and your one requirement is that the waste basket is large enough to handle your false starts and mistakes. Creativity demands activity. Einstein believed imagination was more important than knowledge because imagination is about the future and knowledge represents the past. We can all stand to learn from his example and embrace mistakes and false starts. To be unafraid of failures might be as simple as asking for a larger trash can. Such an awareness may be enough to encourage more activity knowing that one of the smartest men who ever lived simply wanted a larger waste basket! Enjoy the show! An Acquired Taste
"Always do the things you fear the most. Courage is an acquired taste, like caviar." ~Erica Jong The interesting thing about acquired tastes is they can apply to seemingly every aspect of our life. Whether it's beer, whiskey, running a marathon or managing frustration, it's all an acquired taste. The first key to developing any acquired taste is to have an open mind. Too often people shun ideas immediately based upon a bias or story they've held onto. For instance, for the first 35 years of his life, MG was convinced that jogging was one of the "stupidest things anyone could do." His rationalization, "If there wasn't a team to run for or a ball to run to, why would you run at all!?" Today, he can't go a week without at least a couple 3-4 mile runs, at a minimum. Over time people evolve, and it's important to reexamine and experiment to test our conclusions, judgments and opinions. Doing so can enable personal growth. Heck, for most people, personal development itself is an acquired taste. The 36-Hour Fast (once per week) 26 Weeks, Experiment (Part II)
"I can think. I can wait. I can fast." ~Siddhartha ***WARNING** Please do your own research and consult your doctor before altering your diet.*** MG resumes the fasting discussion after recognizing there were a few items left on the "table." Beginning with this passage from Siddhartha: "I can think, I can wait, I can fast." The statement raised the question, "Can I really fast?" More Siddhartha excerpt for additional insight and value: >>>> Is that all? I think that is all. And of what use are they? For example, fasting, what good is that? It is of great value, sir. If a man has nothing to eat, fasting is the most intelligent thing he can do. If, for instance, Siddhartha had not learned to fast, he would have had to seek some kind of work today, either with you, or elsewhere, for hunger would have driven him. But, as it is, Siddhartha can wait calmly. He is not impatient, he is not in need, he can ward off hunger for a long time and laugh at it. Therefore, fasting is useful, sir. >>>> Beyond the Siddhartha reference, fasting offers a relatively quick and powerful way to demonstrate self-efficacy, which is the ability to produce a desired result. When you fast, you are telling yourself that you will not eat for a period of time, and therefore, when you do precisely that, you feel a sense of control, which is a key factor in happiness. MG further points out that for those who may be looking for an inexpensive adventure, fasting fits the bill. Not only does it cost nothing, it ends up saving you money. Further, fasting resulted in a both an increased level of energy and creativity. ***WARNING** Please do your own research and consult your doctor before altering your diet.*** Enjoy the episode! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. The 36 Hour Fast (once per week) 26 Weeks, Experiment
"No man is free who cannot command himself." ~Pythagoras ***WARNING** NOT medical advice. Do your own research and consult your doctor before altering your diet.*** In long-form, discussion format, MG shares his experience with fasting for 36 hours, once-a-week (for 26 weeks). Like the Burpee experiment that arose from a mediation last year, an early February mediation this year brought forth the idea to experiment with fasting, just once, for 36 hours (no food/no protein). What began as a one-time experiment evolved into a half-year journey. In this episode, Martin discusses the experience from week one to week 26 and shares the good, the bad and the ugly. The primary driver was simply to see WHO is in control? Reflecting upon Pythagoras' great quote, "No man is free who cannot command himself," the question became, "Am I really free or bound by impulse? Who is in control, my behaviors and body or my mind?" "Could I go 36 hours without food after a lifetime of being conditioned to eat whenever I felt hungry?" As the journey progressed, MG learned about some of the amazing benefits of fasting, which include "autophagy," a process the body undergoes to remove or recycle damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. Another benefit of his experiment was seeing friends try their own 36-hour, once-per-week, fast. ***WARNING** This is NOT medical advice and should not be taken as such. Do your own research and consult your doctor.*** Enjoy the episode! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. Return On Energy
"You are energy and achieving your goal will require energy. Therefore, putting your energy toward creating and aligning habits that support your goals is the most efficient means to achieve them." In the business world the phrase "return on investment" is fairly ubiquitous. People want to understand, for instance, how spending $1,000 on marketing or advertising will translate into greater sales. In today's extreme, political and Covid-19 climate, many people are sucked into spending enormous amounts of time and energy debating and debasing the 'other' side. The question is, what is the "Return On Energy" for those efforts? Everything has a cost. The cost, as Thoreau put it, "is the amount of life you trade for it". Where you put your time and energy always produces results. The question is, are they the results you are looking for? Is the time and energy you devote to combating others within your social and social networking circles moving you favorably toward your goals and ideals? Some people will devote hours and days of their life —enormous amounts of energy— trying to sway people to their line of thinking. Yet, the old adage remains, "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." With each new day we are "given" twenty-four, fresh hours of time and energy (hopefully) to direct toward our most important goals and ideals. Be sure your efforts produce a solid "Return On Energy". The Trend
"Remember this: The trend is your friend." In Earnest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, there's a scene where Bill asks Mike, "How did you go bankrupt?" "Two ways," Mike responds, "Gradually, then suddenly." We can find this, "The Law of Gradually, then Suddenly," nearly everywhere. How does one get old? How did the oak tree get so big? How did you get fit or fat or wealthy or broke? Gradually, then suddenly. Consider Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffett's extreme wealth and how it was acquired. Chances are good they would answer the same, "Gradually, then suddenly." For the most part this is how life goes, from gradually to suddenly. Within the context of any given day, things are imperceptibly small and slow. Then, suddenly, the compounding effects are impossible to ignore. Gradually, then suddenly. This is precisely how the force of habit compounds within our lives. The good or bad habits compound until one day they are impossible to ignore. The beauty is, when we take the time to pause, observe and reflect, it's possible to identify a trend. Are we trending in a positive direction or not? Nobody is ever trending favorably all the time. With honest observation, we can and should assess all the major aspects of our life (wellness categories) and correct course before it's too late. Thus, the trend is your friend, but you must take the time to pause, reflect, and correct course if necessary. How to Track Negative Habits
"A nail is driven out by another nail. Habit is overcome by habit." ~Desiderius Erasmus The first answer is provided by Desiderius' insightful comment above, rather than tracking a negative habit one should focus on building a new, positive habit in its place. For instance, if you wanted to stop and/or reduce your beer consumption, you should focus on tracking your water or other beverage consumption. Or, you might even substitute a non-alcoholic beer and track that. The problem is when you focus your attention on a negative habit by tracking it, you tend to reinforce the thoughts and emotions related to the negative habit. For instance, if you are told not to think about a pink elephant, the very first thing you will do is think of a pink elephant. Your mind and subconscious tends to ignore the concept of negatives. By focusing on a new, positive habit your attention and energy are set upon building a new positive habit which will replace the negative habit. The other effective way is to weaken a negative habit's habitstrength. By following PARR Plan, Act, Record & Reassess and instead of using the "minimum success criteria" use a "maximum success criteria". When trying to lower habitstrength the core idea is to establish a maximum or threshold not to exceed for your target day. Over time, by lowering the "maximum success criteria" the habitstrength weakens. For instance, the first two or four week tracking period you might allow yourself up to 7 cigarettes per target day and the second tracking period you might then lower the threshold to 5 cigarettes per target day. For each subsequent tracking period the maximum success criteria is lowered for each target day and over time the habitstrength decreases. Information
"We're drowning in information and starving for wisdom." We live in the information age. In an instant you can have top technical and scholarly articles on nearly any subject. Information is easily attained. That's the good news. The bad news is we love to consume information: news, books, movies, podcasts (irony recognized), social media, etc. On and on it goes. Information. Information. Information. All this information consumption comes at a cost. The cost is stagnation. By consuming information, we feel as though we are actually doing something. "Well," you say, "information is knowledge and knowledge is power!" "A little information can't hurt?" Correct. A "little" information is very likely a good thing. Too much information has a price for many of us. In many cases, the consumption of information is precluding actual effort. Information/knowledge is only potential power. One needs to act! On a recent mastermind call, one of the participants was troubled by his recent health report. He was deemed overweight with too much visceral fat, and there was concern about possible diabetes and other health issues. The group began to recommend books to read and documentaries to watch. Even the concerned member, who already had seen multiple doctors and had reports, believed that he should see another specialist and doctor. The concerned participant already had more information than he needed. He was drowning in information, and what he needed was action. In fact, what he needed was consistent action (HABIT). He was encouraged to begin habit tracking relative to his diet and exercise. Habit tracking is where the rubber meets the road. His problem wasn't lack of information, it was lack of action. Day One
"Day one or one day. It's your choice." A single day is a powerful concept. In a single day our world can truly begin to transform. All it takes is one day! Just one day for us to make a life-long, lasting commitment to begin to develop new habits. Transformation and positive change can begin in a moment --on any given day YOU decide. Jim Rohn used to say, "We cannot change our destiny overnight but we can change our destination." The question is which day are you going to begin? Can you make today THE day? Or, will today be just another day. Many of us get caught up in someday syndrome. Brian Tracy loves to call it, "Someday Island". And, he says there are a lot of people stranded there! You know, "Someday, I'll... go on that family vacation". "Someday, I'll start to save money." "Someday, I'll learn how to play the piano or learn a new language." The power to change is always in the present. Nobody ever created change in the future. Positive change is created on DAY ONE. Is today DAY ONE or just one day? Monkey See, Monkey Do
"The best way to change someone else's behavior is to change your own." People often want their near-and-dear friends and family members to cultivate new, positive habits. Yet, the unfortunate reality is that behavior change can't be forced upon another. We can try to bribe, coerce, or even threaten but, without the cooperation and sincere desire of the individual, those efforts will prove futile. Desire is the first key element of behavior change. Without desire, it's impossible to develop any new habit. With desire, however, new habits are formed more quickly and easily. One of the most interesting and effective strategies to help others change their behavior is to change our own behavior. By creating goals for ourselves, we are challenged to form new habits. The behavior changes we undergo nearly always influence those closest to us, over time. Thought Experiments
"Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions." ~Albert Einstein. Thought experiments come in many varieties and you don't have to be a theoretical physicist to put them to use. A good thought experiment can drive behavior change, goal achievement and even habit development! Albert Einstein was famous for his breakthrough "thought experiments". Even though he struggled somewhat in mathematics, his natural strength was using his imagination to solve problems. At the age of 16, Einstein was entertaining the bizarre thought experiment of riding a beam of light alongside another beam of light. This thought experiment ultimately helped to redefine the foundation of physics and facilitate his Theory of Relativity. The ability to pose questions and then lay them against a backdrop of our imagination can help us to solve problems and even problems that don't yet exist! When it comes to everyday life, we can learn from Einstein's example, putting thought experiments to use for ourselves. Here's a few examples: What does a successful day look like? What does a successful marriage look like? If I were to eat only salads at night for the next few months, what would be compounding affect? If I were to die tomorrow, what experience or achievement would I most regret not having? The process of idealization is nothing other than a thought experiment. Entrepreneurs often use thought experiments, for instance, consider Elon Musk with SpaceX. and this question/thought experiment "What if we could reuse the booster rockets?" Whether it's to improve your health, wealth, business or relationships, the value of applying thought experiments to your life cannot be over emphasized. The Best Solution
"Good solutions can lead us to better—and even the best—solutions, but only when we take action." Theodore Roosevelt put it this way: "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Many intelligent people are bound by inaction and indecision. It's a trap created by overthinking and the awareness that there is always a better—or even, a best—solution "out there." Life, though, keeps moving at a relentless pace. There is little room for extended periods of overthinking without action. Paralysis by over-analysis becomes debilitating, and opportunities are lost. This mind bullet came to MG as he was challenged by the puzzles on Chess.com. The puzzles reward only the BEST solution. If you are wrong, your score drops. Life doesn't work this way. In chess, the best solution is always clear—always black and white. In life, the best solution may not be readily apparent for some time, or it may become apparent only after taking action. People who wait to avoid failure or to gather "all" the information are often left behind. It's typical that most entrepreneurs maneuver and adapt their companies over time. Often, the business they started years earlier is now providing an entirely different product or service. The key was getting started with the best available data at the time. Out of Sight
"What you focus on expands within your awareness." Managing your environment, with some planning and forethought is one of the best ways to influence your behavior. If you want to focus better, eliminate potential distractions ahead of time. If you want to eat better, control what is in your pantry and refrigerator and change your shopping habits. If you want to quit smoking, ensure you are not hanging out with the same friends during the smoke break and make sure there aren't cigarettes anywhere in sight. MG revisits the famous "Standford marshmallow experiment" from the early 1970's where the professors leave children ages 3.5 to 5.5 in a room with their favorite treats; marshmallows, cookies, Oreos, etc. The objective of the experiment is to see how well the children are able to delay gratification. They are told that if they can wait for the professor to return they will get two of their favorite treats or, they can ring the bell aright away and get one. In turns out, the children who performed well in the test went on to become better students and had better careers. While this seems to oversimplify the matter, one thing all the kids did to successfully delay gratification was to put the cookies OUT OF SIGHT. The other key idea is that self-discipline and will-power are learnable skills/habits that can be cultivated over time. Negativity Bias
"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see." ~Thoreau Most people aren't aware just how hard-wired they are toward the negative. In other words, something very positive will typically have far less of an impact on one's behavior and emotions than something equally negative. Theories vary, but most psychologists agree that negativity bias is a derivative of our long-evolved survival instincts. Thus, noticing and appreciating blue skies on a wonderful, warm summer day with friends is far less important to your livelihood than noticing a snake in the grass. Thousands of years of evolutionary programming has deeply embedded negativity (survival) into our subconscious. Meaning, we may hear ten different compliments from our boss, but all it takes is one negative critique and our day, week or evening with our spouse is completely ruined. Possessing a hypersensitivity to negativity bias can subvert out character and, if we're not careful, become habitually damaging our happiness, wellness, relationships and even our professional career. Complaining
"Never complain, about anything, to anyone, not even yourself." The quote above caught MG totally off guard when he was reading a book, so he took it as a literal challenge and wondered if he could do it for just a day. Less than a few hours later, he was at nearly twelve complaints! Why is the toothpaste cap not on? Who would post such a stupid thing on Facebook? Why is the broom there!? Why is there dog food all over the floor. Complaint. Complaint. Complaint. All silently and all to himself. "We become what we think about, most of the time." Complaining is rarely helpful and only useful when it's in a constructive fashion. Even though these weren't audible complaints, they were silent thoughts to himself, directing his focus and energy. Martin recalled the Zen koan about the butcher. "Everything is the best!" Then the James Allen quote from "As a Man Thinketh" "Keep your hand firmly upon the helm of thought... Self control is strength; right thought is mastery; calmness is power. Neither one of these ideas leave any room for complaining! The Price
"There are only three requirements for success. First, decide exactly what it is you want in life. Second, determine the price you are going to have to pay to get what you want. And third, and this is the most important, resolve to pay that price." ~H. L. Hunt When it comes to goal achievement and success there is always a price to pay. Did you become a better reader or student? Did you learn a new skill or vocation? Did you become more fit? The price of success is one that is always paid in advance! The price you must be willing to pay is the development of new habits. The price you must be willing to pay is your personal transformation. If the person you are today was sufficient you would already have achieved the goal you seek. Once you have clarity on what you want. Now it's time to identify the habits you must develop that support and align with the goals and ideals you want to achieve and begin developing them. That is the price you will pay. And, yes, the payment is due every day. It often means sacrificing personal time, entertainment time for "investment" time. Everything has its price, including the attainment of your goals and ideals. Hunger
"When you want to succeed as badly as you want to breathe, then you will be successful." ~Eric Thomas Last week's episode was, "What do you want?" This week, the question is "How hungry are you?" Hunger is an interesting concept because taken in its most literal sense, there are few driving forces quite as primal. Hunger gets people to take action and immediately. Hunger is very binary. You either eat or you die. Thus, non-action isn't an option. You take action toward your goal of getting food. Goal achievement at is most elementary level is binary as well. Are you really hungry enough to achieve your goal? You either truly want the goal or you don't? The challenge, the great impediment to our progress, is often comfort. Our behaviors are driven largely by two great forces; pain and pleasure. When we're comfortable, well feed, (not hungry) we're less likely to move into the pain of goal pursuit. Consider a super-star athlete like Michael Jordan. What was Jordan famous for? It was his competitive drive often fueled by his constant practice of fabricating an edge to keep him hungry! What do you want?
"I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want." ~Mark Twain So, what do you want? Last week it was about WHY we should be challenging ourselves. This week it's about knowing/understanding what you want? Consider an all-you-can-eat buffet. You could eat any of the amazing food choices and as much you want, the problem is, you couldn't possibly eat everything. You must choose. You must select what it is you desire from a myriad of choices. Brian Tracy loves to say, "You'll never have enough time to do everything you want to do in life, but you'll always have enough time to do the most important things." Thus, determining what you really want is essential. If success can be defined as "creating your ideal future." The only way any of us can realize our ideal future is to first know what it is we're going after. Therefore, beginning with the end in mind—clarity— knowing what it is your really want is the crucial first step. WHY?
"When it comes to personal development, 'Why?' is both the question and the answer." WHY challenge yourself? Why get involved in personal development? Why read 'self-help' books? Why try to improve? Why run a marathon or try to write a book? Only you can know your personal motive. Understanding what drives your behavior helps you produce personal power— self-efficacy— the ability to create a desired result. Knowing your motives is a prerequisite to prove to yourself that you can control and improve yourself! Your motive, your why, reinforces self-efficacy which builds momentum. Your WHY gives you courage and confidence to push yourself further and go after bigger challenges. Your why makes you bigger than your problems. This is WHY. Obligation
"With just one short life to live a powerful question smacks us right between the eyes: What obligations come with it?" This week's theme layers nicely on top of last week's MBM, The Bucket List. Obligation: An act of being morally or legally bound; a duty or commitment. A debt of gratitude. While philosophers through the ages have struggled with this question, MG asks the listeners to consider the same theme. "Do you think you have any obligations with the life you've been gifted?" MG runs through a list of considerations: Do you have the obligation to care for yourself and others? Do you have the obligation to have the best health possible? Do you have the obligation to be kind — to treat others as you wish to be treated? (The Golden Rule). Do you have the obligation to find a purpose in life? Do you have an obligation to love? Do you have the obligation to be of service? Do you have the obligation to be happy? Do you have the obligation to challenge yourself? Do you have the obligation to learn, grow and set goals? Do you have the obligation to refine your thinking and your character? The feeling of obligation drives action! And, if you were to have no obligations would life lose its meaning? The Bucket List
"If beginning with the end in mind is important, and it is, than the bucket list exercise takes you to the ultimate end!" This week's theme layers nicely on top of last week's MBM, Motive. If knowing our motives helps to spark the action that drives the formation of our habits and goals, than knowing what is most important in our life, before we die, is the ultimate motivator to get moving! Too many people are simply going through the motions in life and unmotivated. The bucket list exercise reminds us that our time is precious and forces us to identify very quickly those 'things' that are most meaningful. MG quickly recounts how it was the bucket list exercise that is responsible for creating The Habit Factor (app and book). And, without forcing himself to consider his own untimely demise, very deeply, none of so many of his most meaningful achievements would have ever materialized. Motive
"Find the motive that drives the action you desire" Building off last week's Mind Bullet, "Feelings & Focus", MG tackles the significance that your motive plays when it comes to goal achievement and/or habit development. Simply put; motive drives action! The large majority of people remain frozen— stuck by inaction— waiting for ideal circumstances or, too afraid to make mistakes and fail. The path to progress and ultimate success requires action and knowing your motive is what will ignite your emotions and drive sustained action. Feelings & Focus
"Your emotions guide your focus." A powerful element to goal achievement and habit building is taking control of your emotions and channeling them positively. The emotions you feel at any given moment can either help or hurt your ability to focus. One of the reasons this is important to understand is because so many people set goals that are uninspiring! As adults, we get to identify which emotions are serving us and even how we are going to respond. Planting Seeds
"Begin something today you'll be pleased you started three or five years from now." When the environment around us shifts so dramatically that it dictates what we can and cannot do, concepts like non-resistance teach us to use constraints positively. No matter the pressure we're feeling, we have the opportunity to refract it towards optimism, hope and faith. (See The Pressure Paradox). Thus, we know it's a time to sow rather than reap — to to plant seeds. This may mean life-long creative projects or just getting on top of chores around the house. Martin shares an email from a friend who echoes these sentiments, his mission: to come out the other side of the pandemic; if not wealthier, stronger, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Glenn R. Fox: Gratitude, Optimism, Purpose & Covid-19
"We know from a lot of research that when things get tough, the general rule is people actually tend to help people out...” ~Glenn R. Fox Today's interview brings the return of Season 2, episode #12 guest Glenn R. Fox, head of Design, Strategy, and Outreach at USC Performance Science Institute. For more background on Glenn, be sure to check out our prior interview. The topic de jour is Covid-19 and the current pandemic, which sets the backdrop for a discussion about concepts such as optimism, gratitude, and purpose. Glenn shares various insights based upon his and others' studies and research that suggests, for instance, the general trend in crises is for people to be kind and compassionate, and that optimistic people tend to be more realistic and cautionary. Glenn leaves us with three real-life exercises we can practice in order to develop the skills that foster the powerful traits of purpose, optimism, and gratitude. Enjoy the episode! Response-Able
"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” ~Viktor Frankl This "tweener" Mind Bullet episode centers around how we respond to situations beyond our control—a fitting topic that comes during a time of great uncertainty throughout the world. Last week we addressed the Covid-19 virus and the idea of timing, including how important it is to pause and reflect on how the environment can dictate our behavior. This week we expand on that idea, discussing the importance of our response to what's happening around us. Viktor Frankl's book, Man's Search for Meaning, shares many lessons to aid and guide our response to situations beyond our control. "Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'.” In trying times, sometimes the one thing we can control is our response to what's happening. What attitude are you choosing? How are you going to respond? Listen in for more on challenging yourself when you can't change your situation, finding meaning and purpose no matter what happens, and choosing an attitude of positivity when faced with uncertainty. COVID-19
"A rising tide lifts all boats." This "tweener" Mind Bullet episode was going to be about accountability, coming on the heels of our recent episodes on self-mastery and justification. But as the world shifts its priorities in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Habits 2 Goals pivots its subject matter to the idea of TIMING. In a time of understandable stress and panic, what we can do is be patient and focus on what we can control. Environmental factors can and will throw us off course as we pursue our goals, and that's OK. It's not always as overwhelming as a pandemic, but there are times that call for patience, as we wait for the environment to be supportive of what we're setting out to achieve. As we respect and understand timing, we realize there are bigger, fundamental forces at play. Listen in for more on how timing affects our lives and goal achievement, why we need to focus on what we can control, and how no storm lasts forever. Justified!
"Becoming aware of how you justify your actions will help you produce the results you want.” This in-between-seasons ("tweener") Mind Bullet episode was inspired by last week's episode on Self-Mastery as we dive into the idea of justifying our behavior. We learned last week that "Habit is the most imperious of all masters," meaning it will dominate our lives, with or without our permission. The beauty is, we have the option of directing and guiding those habits, and this self-mastery is a lifelong process. This leads right into today's topic, which we first touched on in Season Two's episode, "Humans Are Justifying Creatures." As justifying creatures, when we veer off course with our choices or behavior, we find a way to justify it. Breaking a diet? Well, it was a friend's birthday party, what could I do? Not exercising as you planned? It's raining out! No one wants to feel bad about themselves, so when we hit a challenge, give in to temptation, or make a mistake, it's easy to assign blame and make excuses. We all do this. The important thing is to become aware of justifying your behavior and choices. Listen to yourself as you spin your story. How many justifications are you making every day, particularly when it comes to sabotaging positive new habits and behaviors? Listen in for more on justifying your behavior, becoming aware of the stories you create, and realizing how these justifications can derail you as you work toward your goals. Self-Mastery
"Habit is the most imperious of all masters.” ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe On this in-between-seasons ("tweener") Mind Bullet episode we examine a subject we've touched on but never fully explored: self-mastery. Self-mastery is simply the ability to take control of your life without being blown off course. Your body is the servant and not your master. Self-mastery ties into the idea of challenge and change, a subject we've explored in depth. It's time to check the self-mastery meter and see how you're doing. MG discusses how a short fast tested and challenged his personal self-mastery, leading to insights about just how in control we are over our impulses. Self-mastery doesn't have to be about fasting or even food. Analyze your spectrum of behaviors, for example, spending vs. saving money, time spent on social media, playing online games etc. The key idea is to find ways in which you can test your own self-mastery and thereby develop self-discipline. Listen in for more on self-mastery, how it ties into the intentional development of new habits, and how to build the habits that prove we are in control. The Moment
"No one told you when to run, you've missed the starting gun.” ~Pink Floyd On this in-between-seasons ("tweener") Mind Bullet episode we tackle a subject first brought up in the season 6 episode The Future: the moment is now. How many times have you heard a comment like, "Now is the defining moment of our time," in terms of an election or another big current event? But there's more to it: Now is (or can be), a defining moment in your life. Now! In our season 6 episode The Future, we realized that we're not just creating the future now, the future IS now. NOW IS THE FUTURE. How are you applying the moment? If you had a checklist for the moment, are you frittering it away, or are you using it to create clarity, take responsibility, take action, build better relationships, improve your wellness, etc.? (Listen to the Brian Smith interview (UGG Australia founder) more about transformational awareness.) Now is the future. Use the moment to align your behaviors with your goals and ideals. Streaks
"Desire is the most important element of habit and skill development, not streaks.” On this in-between-seasons ("tweener") Wednesday Mind Bullet episode we discuss the subject of streaks. Many people confuse and misinterpret the connection between streaks and habits. Streaks are something you do every day, and we often think we have to do something every day—have a streak—to develop a habit. Habit and skill development are more dependent upon consistency over time, not doing something every day. When we follow the PARR methodology, we incrementally develop new habits over time. Streaks are a great tool (MG's burpee streak) for fitness and productivity and can be powerful mental and physical challenges. But streaks are not required for habit development. Listen in for more on the difference between streaks and habits; the physical and emotional downsides of streaks; and how desire, knowledge, and capacity to perform the behavior —not streaks—are the most important tools when acquiring habits and skills. S663: Smart vs. Hard
"If people knew how hard I worked to gain my mastery, it wouldn't seem so wonderful after all.” ~Michelangelo This Frequently Asked Friday ponders a common theme: Should I work hard, or should I work smart? Common wisdom implores us to work smart, not hard. But like so much of the thinking we encounter here at Habits2Goals, this is another example of dichotomous thinking. Working smart first ensures that we're asking the right questions and setting ourselves up for success. What's working? What's not working? Where do I want to go? But there's no getting around working hard, despite what you may hear. No one's going to do your push-ups for you, for example. Hard work makes you stronger physically, mentally and emotionally. Listen in for more on starting smart and gaining clarity, working hard toward your goals, and applying the skillset of hard work toward habit and skill development. S662: Two Lives
"You have two lives, and the second one begins when you realize you only have one.” ~Confucious This special Mind Bullet Wednesday is inspired by the above quote about coming to the awareness of life as a precious and fleeting gift. This kind of awakening usually happens after a few decades of living. We leave behind our autopilot, mindless existence and move to the clarity and understanding that there's no second time around. For MG, this awakening was spurred by the exercises we talked about in Episode 1 of our Vision & Wellness series, such as the rocking chair, obituary, and bucket list exercises, prompting him to seek new challenges and change. Do you have this awareness? Are you intentional about what you're trying to create in this life? Listen in for more on when your second life begins, finding what will prompt your awakening, and fulfilling the promise of your life's goals. S661: Evolve
"The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life." ~Muhammad Ali Today's Mind Bullet Monday tackles a concept that spans the human journey of growth and change: evolve. What sparked this episode was remembering Kobe Bryant. When he started in the NBA he was young and brash, but he evolved. He entered the league as a talented athlete and exited as an example of work ethic, maturity, generosity, and grace. Surviving and evolving means adapting to change. Think about Madonna or other great artists with staying power. They're still relevant over time because they continue to evolve. So what's the connection between habit and evolution? Habit means character (its Latin root is habitus). What is nobler than evolving your character—to take your habits and intentionally direct them toward your goal?! Ask yourself, how am I intentionally evolving over the next 5-10 years? Listen in for more on habit as intentional evolution; adapting to survive, thrive and grow; and how to figure out who you want to become—and find the habits to help you get there. Enjoy the episode! Note: A great example of reinvention and evolution is George Foreman. The book Pscycho Cybernetics, by Maxwell Maltz, discusses George Foreman and his reinvention from not-well-liked boxer to a lovable, kind character, earning him millions back in the ring and as a grilling endorser. S660: Mindfulness vs. Habit, Part II
"Conscious breathing is my anchor.” ~Thich Nhat Hahn Today's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF) picks up where last Friday's Mindfulness vs. Habit episode left off, exploring the significant role habit plays in mindfulness. To recap, an acquaintance "thought leader" asserted that he didn't believe in habit; he believed only in mindfulness. In the episode, we described at length how this is dichotomous thinking, and habit and mindfulness coexist brilliantly together. In fact, we use our conscientious mind to intentionally craft habits to serve us in a subconscious fashion. But there's more to the story when you think about the idea that MINDFULNESS is all-important. Think about breathing. Is every breath you take all day long a mindful one? In fact, the autonomic nervous system regulates breathing, body temperature, metabolism, and more. These are habitual patterns of behavior governed biologically. The idea here is that one is not more important than the other. There is a beautiful, delicate balance between habit and mindfulness, and each has its place. Listen in for more on how habit and mindfulness are interwoven, why it doesn't have to be one or the other, and how we gain incredible power when we harness the force of habit. S659: 2020 Vision & Wellness, BONUS Episode
"You're only going to know how mentally tough you are, and what your limits are, by testing yourself.” This bonus sixth episode continues where episode 5, Mindset, left off, answering the critical question: How do I develop the GRIT mindset that will lead to success? The first step toward creating a success mindset is to take control—grab the wheel of your mind. One way to do this is to practice affirmations or mantras, such as Brian Tracy's "I like myself." Since you can hold only one thought in your mind at a time, articulating a positive idea such as "I like myself" blocks negative, petty thoughts, and tunes your mind toward something positive. Another idea is to challenge yourself physically. By giving yourself physical tests, you exercise grit, resilience, adaptability, and so much more. (This is reminiscent of our Obsessed episode, which explored how wanting something so badly is a great ally when it comes to goal achievement.) Listen in for more on setting goals, taking control of your mind using affirmations, and challenging yourself to expand your mental toughness and physical limits. Enjoy the episode! S658: Programmed
“You are the programmer... you are responsible. Write the program.” ~Stephen R. Covey Today's Mind Bullet Monday explores the idea of being programmed, a topic inspired by the Gay Hendricks book, The Big Leap. In the book, Hendricks discusses a coaching client who had a difficult time making changes because she had been "programmed" for many years to do things a certain way. This applies to all of us. What we do habitually continues to be reinforced, for better or worse, taking us toward our goals or sending us farther away. This brings up the critical concept of awareness. How aware are we of the things we're programmed to do? And where does this programming come from? In our episode on being hypnotized, we asked the question: If you were hypnotized, how would you know? This applies to our programming, as well. When we've been programmed to do things that hurt our goals and desires, how can we become aware of this—and how can we change it? Listen in for more about becoming aware of harmful programming, finding the habits that are reinforcing this programming and leading us away from our goals, and how P.A.R.R. and habit tracking comes into play. S657: Mindfulness vs. Habit
"Use mindful, intentional, thought to forge the habits that will then serve you subconsciously.” Today's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF) addresses a common question and a confusing concept: What role does habit play in mindfulness? This question sprang from an offhand comment by a "thought leader": "I don't believe in habit, I believe in mindfulness." First of all, this falls into the trap of dichotomous thinking. Of course, it doesn't have to be mindfulness OR habit. It's both. So if the goal is to be always mindful, where does habit come into play? Habit is an incredible tool to help us accomplish more because it lets us expend less energy. We use mindful, intentional, thinking to forge habits that will then serve us in a subconsious, autopilot process. Listen in for more on the mindfulness-habit connection, why it doesn't have to be one or the other, and how to develop skills and habits that serve you mindfully. S656: 2020 Vision & Wellness, #5
"Begin with a grit mindset that constitutes healthy habits of thought.” Episode #5, the final chapter of our 2020 Vision & Wellness series, is all about mindset. Mindset is critical because it's your mindset that will help you recalibrate when obstacles throw you off track. Just as we have behavior habits, we also have thought habits. We rehash the same thoughts from one day to the next, and this begins with our identity. Are you someone who gives up when things get tough? Or are you someone who will fight through no matter what? A mindset that knows you WILL achieve—and will find a way—is the first step toward reaching your goals. The foundational mindset habits that comprise grit are also critical to success, including having a vision, being hopeful, staying patient, working SMART and HARD, reframing rejection, fostering resilience, and being persistent. Listen in for more on being aware of your habitual patterns of thought, controlling WHO controls your thinking, creating a mentally tough mindset, and finding true wisdom through experience and reflection. S655: One Stroke at a Time
"Bring your energy to the here and now.” ~Roz Savage For this Mind Bullet Monday, we explore the idea of taking things one stroke at a time. A little backstory: Eco-activist Roz Savage wrote the foreword for The Habit Factor after using the app to reach her goal of rowing across the Atlantic Ocean (she subsequently rowed across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, as well). When discussing with a friend how someone can tackle the enormous task of rowing across an ocean, the answer was readily apparent: one stroke at a time. This idea has ramifications throughout life and its challenges. S654: What's the Difference Between Habits and Rituals?
"Many successful people get up before 6 am in the morning. They have rituals. They exercise, stretch, organize their day, and walk through that series of rituals.” ~Brian Tracy Today's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF) tackles a basic yet important question: What's the difference between habits and rituals? A ritual is simply a series of habits. For example, your morning ritual may consist of healthy habits such as brushing your teeth, exercising, meditating, and eating breakfast. Another more subtle distinction: Rituals involve a spiritual quality. Habits don't often get credit for spirituality, but they too have a spiritual component—after all, there's nothing more spiritual than the evolution and growth of your character. Listen in for more on the differences between rituals and habits, how the two are interlinked, and how the first hour of the day is a powerful time to create a wellness ritual. "If you're not tracking you're slacking!” Episode #4 in our 2020 Vision & Wellness series brings us to the all-important concept of tracking our behaviors to form good, supportive habits of our goals! Finally, MG challenges the listener to add a secondary, physical goal to fuel better energy, health, and wellness.
