Miracles
“The greatest miracle is the ordinary.” ~Henry David Throreau This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.Wouldn’t it be great if there were more miracles in your life?Recently, a woman approached me to explain that a miracle was supposed to happen to her in a few days.“Uh… this is it.” I replied, “This (life) is the miracle. It’s all a freakin’ miracle!”Apparently, Rumi proclaimed, “The greatest miracle is that we are awake and alive.”Einstein reportedly said: “Miracles happen every day, change your perception of what a miracle is and you'll see them everywhere.”Now, from the great Persian philosopher and the brilliant physicist to Insane Clown Posse (band). Yes, ICP! 😀 🤡 👇 I lean on ICP’s brilliance and their fantastic song “Miracles” for some additional inspiration and backup (a few lyrics)…If magic is all we've ever knownThen it's easy to miss what really goes onBut I've seen miracles in every wayAnd I see miracles every dayOceans spanning beyond my sightAnd a million stars way above 'em at nightWe don't have to be high to look in the skyAnd know that's a miracle opened wideLook at the mountains, trees, the seven seasAnd everything chilling underwater, pleaseHot lava, snow, rain and fogLong neck giraffes, and pet cats and dogsThe real challenge is that we’ve been desensitized. We’re swimming in miracles.Like the proverbial fish in water who do not know what water is.“If anything is a miracle, everything is a miracle.” Einstein supposedly observed. It doesn’t matter who observed it. It’s the orientation and the awakening that matters.EVERYTHING IS A MIRACLE. (Repeat). The question is, “How does one reorient themselves to this magical awareness and disposition? Here’s how: AWARENESS. SERVICE. GRATITUDE. MEDITATION. &A LOT OF PRACTICE.Yes, cultivating these habits by tracking them can help! Be sure to follow P.A.R.R. 🙌 It’s difficult to notice and appreciate any miracle when you’re angry, bitter, jealous, frustrated, and/or ungrateful. Or, with your face buried in your phone. In fact, it’s arguably impossible. Take a moment to look up! 👆 Look around.Did you notice that butterfly?“When you change the way you look at things,” Wayne Dyer use to say, “The things you look at change.”Enjoy the show!Update:HERE WE GO!!! Motivation vs. Inspiration
“Sometimes the best way to find inspiration is to ask an important question.” This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. In this episode, Jen and I discuss the significance of motivation and inspiration and their relationship to goal achievement.Inspiration tends to be intrinsic, while motivation can be both intrinsic and extrinsic. Both inspiration and motivation are powerful assets for goal achievement. Each has its place and neither is “better” than the other.Wayne Dyer used to suggest that inspiration was a calling from the spirit within. He would often say, “If you want to be inspired, be an inspiration.”How can you apply these ideas to your goals?Consider the person who doesn’t feel inspired to get fit yet, they know they must. They could change their environment, hire a fitness coach, and get a gym membership (external motivation).Motivation is both the carrot and the stick. Typically, it’s the desire to avoid pain that provides the greatest motivation. Both motivation and inspiration are tools that can serve us in our quest to achieve our most important goals.Understanding the difference helps you to know how and when to leverage each. Enjoy the show!Update:You’re invited! The Best Heroes & Philosophers
“The very best heroes and philosophers are dead.” ~Friedrich NietzscheThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. The best heroes and philosophers are dead?!What does that mean?I thought I’d ask my AI buddies, ChatGPT and BARD to see if they knew.Unfortunately, their interpretations weren’t convincing; they were too literal. Neither offered the insight I suspected was behind the statement. In short, both AI “experiments” had a similar, weak response:“Nietzsche is suggesting that the greatest heroes and philosophers are those who have already lived and died. He argues that these individuals have already made their mark on the world and that we can learn from their example.”I believed the statement meant something else.Perhaps it was my own philosophical leanings (Exhibit A: Habits 2 Goals), that drove me to keep searching.I slept on this riddle for a while. Finally, the answer occurred to me.Have you ever heard the advice:If you truly admire or love a hero (a movie star, athlete, musician, author, etc), you should never meet them.In short, humans are fallible. They are prone to contradictions, errors, and mistakes. They can even offend people, but only when they are alive. It’s the dead heroes and philosophers who cannot err. Thus…The very best heroes and philosophers are dead.Enjoy the show!Update:Join our next Live Cohort is 8/8/23. The Spectrum
“Personal development exists on a spectrum. It’s a gift that allows you to become the person you could by using your intelligence, intention and effort.” This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.“He (or she) is on the spectrum.” A phrase that is probably overused these days.BTW: If it’s a spectrum, then everyone is on it.In this episode, we carry the idea of “The spectrum” and apply it to our personal development and potentiality. If intelligence is goal-directed behavior, then improving one’s wellness (over time) is a terrific use of their intelligence. Is it possible to consider your health on a spectrum from 1 - 10? How would you rate it?What about your finances or your professional career? Is it possible to improve your score in any wellness category over time? Arguably, it’s mandatory. How do you know where to start your personal development journey? The answer is often found by identifying your greatest challenge – the lowest score – in each of the eight, essential categoriesEnjoy the show!Update:Our next Live Cohort is 8/8/23. A Blade of Grass
“Life is like a dew drop, on a blade of grass, in the morning sun.” ~Zen ProverbThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.Deepak Chopra said it like this, “Life is a lucid dream.”How well can you recall yesterday? How about sharing a story from your childhood? The painting below has hung in my stairway for nearly twenty-five years. It’s a photograph from our wedding in Baja, Mexico. It has a Monet-type filter applied to it.The original image is a beautiful, crisp photo taken by a professional photographer.Yet, for nearly twenty-five years, the image has looked like this, intentionally blurry. Why?Where have the young newlyweds gone? Where did the 25 years go?As we approach our 25th anniversary, the effect is fitting. The wedding seems like it happened both yesterday and a lifetime ago.The effect perfectly captures the ephemerality of life. This moment is already gone.No matter how old you are, your life is nearly over. It’s just a matter of time……and time is illusory.Even if you live to be 200 years old, your life will be over quickly. This isn’t meant to be depressing. Rather, it’s meant to stoke your appreciation for the moment — this moment. The time will never be “right.” This moment is a gift — it’s the “present” — that enables you to move in the direction of your goals and ideals.Get after it.Enjoy the show!Check out my latest book, recently awarded “Finalist: Self-help, Motivation” by the International Book Awards: EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY.Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here: As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! Zen is Laughter
“Zen is laughter, laughter Zen.”This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. How is Zen like laughter? ☝️Many people think Zen is a philosophy. Philosophies are ideas. The answer can be found in this great quote by Zen master T.D. Suzuki, “Zen has nothing to do with ideas.”How much thinking do you do when you laugh?Have you considered all the amazing benefits of laughter? Here is a short list:* Reduces stress and anxiety. * Boosts the immune system. * Helps to relieve pain.* Improves cardiovascular health. * Strengthens social bonds. * Improves mood and outlook on life. * Improves cognitive function. * Helps with recovery from illness. * Increases creativity. If laughter and non-thinking are healthy. What is the cost of too much thinking or overthinking? How much anxiety and pain is created from too much thought?Isn’t it true that anxiety and most pains are created by thought? These quotes remind us to be careful of our thoughts; to be cautious of our perpetual cleverness — aware of our overthinking and all the stories we create!Ultimately, it’s the practice of Zen that attempts to free us from our mind. Perhaps, the very best way to do that is with a good laugh! 😂Enjoy the show!Check out my latest book, recently awarded “Finalist: Self-help, Motivation” by the International Book Awards: EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY.Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here: As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! Red Lights
“You can only tell yourself one story at a time.”(see EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY)This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. On a recent training run, I reflected upon an answer I’d given in a podcast interview on the Fifth Quarter.Hosts Lason Perkins and Jeff Osterman asked: “Do you celebrate the green lights?”The guests were wondering, figuratively, if I had the habit of appreciating the little blessings in life. I surprised them, and myself, by noticing that very morning, I did just that – celebrated several successive green lights while running.I answered literally.I shared how the green lights allowed me to complete my run without stopping. However, on a subsequent run, I would realize a far better answer. I thought about their question as I approached a red light. I was forced to stop. Automatically, I raised my arms and celebrated. This is awesome! Why was I celebrating a red light!?It wasn’t because I was able to stop and rest. Rather, I was filled with appreciation that I was running…That I was outdoors. That I was getting exercise. That I was above ground!I celebrated a red light!Sure, I had a bit of a runner’s high.As I thought about their question, I wished I could take my answer back. How much better would it have been, I wondered, if I answered, “Green Lights!? Anyone can celebrate a green light……I do my best to celebrate the RED LIGHTS!”Enjoy the show!Check out my latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY to see how environmental principles influence your effectiveness.Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here: As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! The Hunter
“The great value of having a big, hairy, audacious goal is that it forces you to get on your toes. Nobody with big, hairy audacious goals is living passively.” (see EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY!This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. At halftime of a recent NBA playoff game, Kenny Smith (the TNT color analyst) shared a powerful observation about the Warriors’ play and, more importantly, their disposition.Kenny’s observation isn’t confined to the basketball court. The defending NBA champs – the Warriors – found themselves down 0-2 to the Sacramento Kings and were now facing a crucial game 3.At the half, the Warriors were up 53 - 41.Kenny said, “This is the first time in this series that the Warriors look like ‘the hunters.’”----Champions tend to rest and relax. Success breeds complacency. Meanwhile, the competition becomes hungry. Those who are hungry hunt. Those who are well-fed become the hunted.Finding themselves down 0-2 and possessing a halftime lead in game 3, Smith made an important observation: The Warriors regained their winning mentality. They were, once again, the hunters.---Ask yourself, “Am I playing life today like a hunter or the hunted?”Enjoy the show!Check out my latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY to see how environmental principles influence your effectiveness.Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! The Art of Letting Go
“High expectations are the key to everything.” ~Sam Walton (Founder of Walmart)“The key to happiness is low expectations.” ~Barry Schwartz (American Pyschologist)This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. Which is it?Should you have high expectations or low expectations? How about…Both.Often you should have high expectations. Sometimes you should have low expectations. Sometimes, no expectations are the way to proceed. It depends.----To let go and to possess high expectations are just two sides of the same coin. While Habits 2 Goals is about goal achievement. It is also about appreciating the things we can influence as well as the things we cannot.Put simply: Goal-striving is intelligence in action. However, it is also one’s ego and willpower in action.John was a guy who seemed to accomplish every goal he went after. A goal achiever of the highest order. He’d recently sold his company for millions while undergoing an eighteen month battle with leukemia.Just a week before he would pass away, he did the only thing that was left to do. He let go.That may have been John’s great gift and it was a powerful lesson to all who loved him.---One can practice the art of letting go daily. When it comes to goal achievement, it’s crucial to recognize where the ego is pursuing ambitions and outcomes beyond your control. With awareness and practice, daily frustrations can vanish with the practice of letting go.Enjoy the show!Check out my latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY to see how environmental principles influence your effectiveness.Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! How to Achieve BIG Goals!
“By adding positive pressure, anyone can improve their productivity, performance and even peace of mind.” ~MG (see The Pressure Paradox™)This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. On a return trip to San Diego, I stop in Orange County for breakfast with a great friend – a super friend – who happens to be a championship-winning, professional collegiate rugby coach.Surprisingly, he starts to ping me about setting big goals for himself and, more importantly, about how he can stick to them!----I tell him that the very best way I know (from experience), to stay on track and move toward my biggest goals is to simply track the key, supportive habits that will drive the goal’s attainment. He knows this, by the way. It’s likely that we ALL know this. That is, if it’s important to you, you’d better be tracking.“To know, and not to do, is not to know.” ~ConfuciusHabit tracking is not optional and some methods are better than others ; )Here’s the “right way.”---The first part to ACHIEVING ANY BIG GOAL is to commit! This presumes you are clear and do know what your BIG GOAL is!Such a commitment creates the requisite PRESSURE.Establish a deadline. Pay an entry fee. Establish some real consequences for not following through, etc.Once you are committed, THEN it’s time to begin tracking the core, recurring behaviors (habits) that will bring you closer to the goal. That is step two.TRACK the core, habits that will drive the goal’s attainment.THAT IS HOW YOU STAY ON TRACK.One simply must track to stay on track. That is it. Simple and powerful but not necessarily easy. You got this!Enjoy the show!Check out my latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY to see how environmental principles influence your effectiveness.Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! Principles (Part II)
“There are three constants in life – change, choice and principles.”~ Stephen CoveyThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. Principles govern one's results over the long term.— Excerpt from Principles I —Principles can be likened to the law of gravity: Throw a rock out of a window and you know it will fall toward the earth – every time!Principles are environmental factors that control, influence, and dictate one's results.Covey shares his, "Law of the Farm" example to convey a principle in action. It's impossible to plant a seed today and reap the harvest tomorrow.Impossible.The principles at play demand that time and nurture are required to reap a harvest. Thus, principles govern results.Human effectiveness operates similarly – within a context of timeless, environmental principles.Part II is about how the concept of principles coincides with “The 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System.”---In the model above, where do you think these governing, timeless principles are located?Correct. The environment! One's environment has the ability to be a showstopper depending upon the goal they are aiming for.For instance, just try to grow flowers in the snow.Similarly, imagine a client whose home life is a wreck. They have a tenant they cannot evict and their wife is threatening divorce. How likely is it that they will be able to finish their creative endeavor anytime soon?About zero percent. Why does this matter? It matters because this model reminds us that we must develop our habits and skills within a conducive environment – one that is in alignment with the governing and timeless principles at play.Is your environment favorable for your goals and ideals? Are you working in harmony with governing principles like "the law of the farm?"Are there more tools, and resources (time, money, people) required to help develop the required habits and skills? My latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY, reveals the first and only behavior model to illustrate human behavior in an “echo-system.” Not eco-system.Further, it illustrates how the essential components for personal transformation and long-term goal achievement must be aligned for human effectiveness.Feel free to comment and share. ; )Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! Principles (Part I)
“There are three constants in life – change, choice and principles.”~ Stephen CoveyThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. Chances are good that you've read or at least know of the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Most people think it's a book about habits. It is not. It's a brilliant book about effectiveness. Here's the key: Effectiveness by operating within the context of “universal, governing PRINCIPLES.”Now, you're saying what the heck does that mean?Principles govern one's results over the long term.----Principles can be likened to the law of gravity: Throw a rock out of a window and you know it will fall toward the earth – every time!Principles are environmental factors that control, influence, and dictate one's results.Covey shares his, "Law of the Farm" example to convey a principle in action. It's impossible to plant a seed today and reap the harvest tomorrow.Impossible.The principles at play demand that time and nurture are required to reap a harvest. Thus, principles govern results.Human effectiveness operates similarly – within a context of timeless, environmental principles. To be effective, one must operate in alignment with principles like:RESPONSIBILITYVISIONPRODUCTIVITY---How do you know these principles govern effectiveness?Try to imagine an effective person who is not responsible.Try to imagine an effective person absent of direction – vision. Thus, each of those (above) are principles that dictate one's ability to produce the results they are looking for.---Collectively, Covey labels these the "private" victory.Be proactive. = ResponsibleBegin with the end in mind. = VisionPut first things first. = ProductivityEach is identified as an essential habit to be developed because it aligns with the governing principles of effectiveness.Check out my latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY to see how environmental principles influence your effectiveness.Comment and share.Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! Paradigm Me (Part II)
“If you want small changes, work on your behavior; if you want quantum-leap changes, work on your paradigms." ~ Stephen Covey This Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. Paradigms: Part II – [Episode with special guest Jen Grant]Paradigm by definition:nounpar·a·digm ˈper-ə-ˌdīm : EXAMPLE, PATTERNespecially : an outstandingly clear or typical example or archetype… regard science as the paradigm of true knowledge.—G. C. J. Midgley: a philosophical and theoretical framework of a scientific school or discipline within which theories, laws, and generalizations and the experiments performed in support of them are formulatedthe Freudian paradigm of psychoanalysisbroadly : a philosophical or theoretical framework of any kindA model or framework – a typical example or archetype. In short, paradigms don’t just influence behavior, they drive it from within as a self-referential model, similar to an operating system. Why are we talking about paradigms again? As a behavior model, the “3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System” is a paradigm-shifting tool. Thus, this tool/model ☝️ can help anyone diagnose and troubleshoot their long-term goals and/or personal transformation pursuits.Second, similar to "Plato's Cave" allegory, it reveals the power of a paradigm shift by altering what one understands by changing what one “sees.”As Jen says in this episode, "What's interesting is that until you become aware of the paradigms that have been handed to you growing up (by default), you'll never realize that you can create and choose your own paradigms." Choosing your own paradigm is a unique human superpower!Since paradigms drive behavior as a self-referential model - the very first, most important, paradigm shift one can make is understanding how they control and direct the paradigms that direct their behavior.Everyone can intentionally adopt paradigms that support their long-term goals and personal transformation pursuits.Much more about the model in my latest book, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY.Comment and share!Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! In short, paradigms don’t just influence behavior, they drive it from within as a self-referential model, similar to an operating system.A paradigm shift has the potential to instantly alter decades of prior behavior patterns/habits.Yes. Instantly. This is precisely what Stephen Covey means by quantum leap (above) ☝️.EXAMPLE:A story I enjoy telling involves a neighbor-friend who insisted that she could, "Never quit smoking!" Henry Ford used to say, "Whether you think you can, or you can't, you're right."It was safe to say that her paradigm was, "I'm a smoker, and I will always smoke."Fast forward approximately eighteen months. I notice that she is exercising and had lost some weight. She looked terrific. I told her she looked healthy. She then declared, "I quit smoking too!"How is that possible? I wondered. She seemed committed to her story about never being able to quit smoking."I"m pregnant!" She nearly shouted. There you have it.That's a paradigm shift.Roles (like mother or father), titles, names, badges, even uniforms, etc., influence how people see themselves which influences their behavior.Observe the stories that unfold in your life relative to how you see yourself, your goals, and your ideals. How do you regard the world at large?Einstein's allegedly said, “The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a hostile or friendly universe.”The truth is, as I wrote in EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY, it's both a hostile and friendly universe. However, from that simple determination (a paradigm – a self-referential model) an array of decisions, actions, and behaviors spill forward to alter the results of one’s life.Ask yourself what paradigms you have subscribed to. Which may need to change to alter your results?Comment and share!Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”→ Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial! https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! "Everyone faces the same challenge; aligning their willpower with their volition. The good news is that by following P.A.R.R. they also develop discipline."This Habits 2 Goals premium episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.Five plus years and 500+ Habits 2 Goals episodes later, a single, common theme reveals itself; the significance of habit tracking.Behavioral scientists used to say things like, "habit trackers don't work."They were semi-correct; they do not work when they are not used. When a person tracks their behaviors and follows the P.A.R.R. methodology (Plan, Act, Record & Reassess), they will experience tremendous success.By habit-tracking the 'right' way, they gain positive momentum and feel better about themselves. All because they have aligned their behaviors with their volition. Some people still say things like, "Life is meant for living, not tracking?"The truth is, one can, and should, do both. Pain & Suffering
“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional.” ~The Dalai LamaThis Habits 2 Goals episode is FREE for ALL subscribers. It finally dawns on me that along with ANY worthwhile goal one chooses to pursue, pain and suffering are part of the “package.” Each is preloaded – like software – with every worthwhile goal and ideal. For instance, if you want to be a great mother, you can rest assured there will be pain and suffering. If you want to become a lawyer, there will be pain and suffering. If you want to become a great gymnast, a chess or surf champ, there will be pain and suffering.Do you want to have the perfect spouse? Brace yourself; there will be pain and suffering. Why is this worth mentioning? Since pain and suffering are inescapable, it’s imperative to pursue goals you are obsessed with and passionate about. Complaining II
“It's impossible to be grateful when you're complaining.”This Habits 2 Goals premium episode is FREE for ALL subscribers.Do you notice how often you complain to yourself and others?Have you ever tallied the total number of complaints in a day?Are you aware of how often you complain about "things" and "events" large and small?Complaining is a topic that was covered back in June of 2020. Once again, MG decides to address the subtle and disruptive habit. The first day he decides to tally his complaints, he notices the first complaint even before getting out of bed. Then, just fifteen minutes into the morning, he's already tallied three complaints. Why does this matter? Who cares? Complaining can be fun, right?Well, it's tough to be grateful when you are complaining. If you're a parent, how do you feel when your child complains? Are you interested in rewarding that behavior?Without putting awareness around the daily habit, most people won't ever know how often they complain. They may never know how badly it's impacting their attitude or even their relationships. The good news is, like any habit, by adding some awareness, tracking, and practice the complaining habit can be minimized if not removed entirely.Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesTo learn more about P.A.R.R., just Google “P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.”------Check out, EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY my latest book.Get The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial!https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt’s time to make your goals “Automatic!”: https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot’s “Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021”New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! Motivation isn't what you need.
“Once she arrived at her ideal destination – her goal – she realized it wasn’t what she wanted after all.”A young lady recently confessed that she felt “almost lost” and lacked motivation.Ironically, she felt that way after reaching an important goal.It turns out, she lacked motivation for two reasons.First, the goal’s reality didn’t match expectations.Second, she was struggling to identify what she wanted to pursue next. She found it difficult to get clear on her next ideal outcome – goal.Further, she wanted some assurance that her next goal would be more rewarding.Moving forward, she agreed that she’d:1) Accept that there are no guarantees in the pursuit of any goal. 2) Appreciate how each “wrong” turn provided new information and guidance.3) Forgive herself rather than beat herself up for "wasting time.”With a new perspective, it was easy to notice how her lack of motivation sprung from her inability to become clear on a new exciting new goal. 28 Days!
“A key idea behind habit tracking is to use the week's rhythm. Thus, 28 days, not 30 days, ought to be the tracking period for each habit.”There are a handful of authors and behavior change "experts" offering various ideas about habit development.Unfortunately, many are misleading. One such idea is that habit tracking is optional when it comes to habit development. While it’s true that people develop habits without tracking them, those habits tend to be negative. To develop good, positive habits, science has proven that tracking behaviors tends to be very beneficial. Here’s why:Tracking habits not only reinforces the habit itself, it also fosters an ancillary habit: discipline. "Good habits happen when planned; bad habits happen on their own."With The Habit Factor’s P.A.R.R. methodology, habit tracking is required. In fact, the method demands you identify specific parameters and targets for each habit during successive 28-day tracking periods. When you track the intended habit, you not only affirm the behavior, you reinforce your intention to develop the habit. Some habit experts offer concepts like "mini-habits," "two-minute habits," and even present "habit-stacking" and environmental design as "types" of habits that can be developed.Regardless of the process or how you label the habit, it's the practice of tracking, ideally, for 28 days, that will more quickly foster the development of the habit!Enjoy the show!~mgIt's time to go premium! Aloneness
“You are born alone, and you will die alone.”This week we investigate aloneness. Aloneness is different from loneliness. In the early ’90s, while backpacking across Europe, I was reading Stephen Batchelor’s Alone with Others, an existential approach to Buddhism. In it, the following ideas are explored:”I was alone at birth; I must die alone; and, in a sense, I amalways alone, for the gulf separating me from others cannever satisfactorily be bridged.” It's either a frightening or comforting thought. Maybe both.Recently, though, I've come to a different realization. While we are born alone, it is with and IN spirit. When we die, it is the spirit that leaves our bodies. Thus, we're not born alone entirely. Nor do we die alone. Arguably, our spirit is with us. Or, it IS us.Enjoy the show!~mg This is a public episode. Energy Flows
"Energy flows where attention goes."This week we revisit a goal achievement first principle: EVERYTHING IS ENERGY.Suppose everything is energy (and it is). That means you are energy, and your goal will require energy.Interestingly, habits are the most efficient use of behavior energy and this is why The Habit Factor process of habit alignment is so effective. There are two key elements that impact one's behaviors the most over a long period of time; their environment and thinking, which is predominantly in the form of stories). To illustrate MG discusses the "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System," a new behavior model. The "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System" differs from other, prior behavior models:1. It's the only behavior model representing human behavior in an "echo-system" whereby each component influencer reverberates to influence the others.2. It's the only behavior model representing human thought in the form of stories, predominately at its core.3. The behavior model demonstrates how, at any moment, feelings and emotions may be twice as impactful to our behaviors, yet, over a long period of time, they are less significant.Understanding the essence of this behavior model helps you to better appreciate energy and how each component impacts your long-term goals.Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templates to learn more or Google P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.------Discover EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY here: https://everythingastory.comGet The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial!https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt's time to make your goals "Automatic!"https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot's "Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021"New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! The HERO's Narrative
"Notice all the B.S. stories you tell yourself about EVERYTHING. Then, run them through the H.E.R.O.'s checklist."Your internal monologue is very active!Sometimes it's helpful, and other times, not so much. This internal chatter provides stories about EVERYTHING, from your career to your potential. You even have stories about your spouse, friends, etc.You also have stories about your goals, the ones you choose to pursue or not. These stories establish boundaries. They setup walls that become impenetrable until you notice them first. The more aware you can become of your internal dialogue the easier it is for you to delete, edit and rewrite the stories. The H.E.R.O.'s narrative is a tool – a checklist – to use as a filter to determine if your stories are harmful.Learn about the importance of the HERO's narrative and how you can put it to work right away!Enjoy the show!Visit https://thehabitfactor.com/templates to learn more or Google P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor.------Discover EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY here: https://everythingastory.comGet The Habit Factor® FREE with your audible trial!https://audibletrial.com/habits2goalsIt's time to make your goals "Automatic!"https://automaticgoals.comFeedspot's "Top 10 Habit Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021"New listeners, grab your free habits 2 goals tracking template here: https://thehabitfactor.com/templatesFREE copy of As a Man Thinketh (PDF) right here:As a Man ThinkethSubscribe iTunes here! It's not about the Marathon!
"You don't need to eat a piece of cake after you run 5 miles." Studies on habit development support the idea that self-efficacy – the ability to produce the desired result – is rewarding. By following P.A.R.R., (Plan, Act, Record & Reassess), The Habit Factor's method for habit development, users experience self-efficacy, often. Of course, the opposite is true. If a user does not follow through on their habit tracking plan they will be unhappy. Hence, the method encourages users start with low tracking parameters. By creating a habit plan, and then acting on that plan, you demonstrate self-efficacy and feel great in the process. Thus, "It's not about the marathon!" It's more about the process of establishing a Plan, Acting, Recording and Reassessing your tracking data after four weeks. Enjoy the show! "Discipline is a habit. Nobody is born disciplined." Too often, people say, "I'm just not disciplined enough." The truth is that nobody is born disciplined. Discipline is a habit that can and should be cultivated. Following The Habit Factor's simplified method for habit development, P.A.R.R., anyone can improve their discipline more quickly. A key aspect of P.A.R.R. is that it cultivates habitstrength. Just by tracking your habits and following P.A.R.R., you will improve your discipline. The key is to follow P.A.R.R. and begin with small "targets." Over time, you'll be eager to track more habits because your discipline habit becomes stronger! Killing Negative Habits
"A nail is driven out by another nail. Habit is overcome by habit. ~Desiderius Erasmus Visit: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY" a recent #1 Amazon Hot New Release! When it comes to mastering your habits, knowing how to eliminate bad habits is essential. In Season 6, "How to track negative habits," covered a few ways to kill negative habits. In this episode, MG reviews the critical importance of replacement as a core strategy for habit elimination. The listener is challenged to focus on developing a positive habit that will replace the negative one. "You should concentrate and track the POSITIVE habit you are interested in cultivating in order to replace the negative habit." Habits do not exist in a vacuum. Thus, the classic quotation by Dutch philosopher Desiderius Erasmus, "A nail is driven out by another nail. Habit is overcome by habit." Another essential strategy is to assess your environment with respect to the bad habit. There's a reason the term "habitat" is used to describe one's surroundings. Your environment significantly impacts your behaviors. Taking control of your environment and adding impediments that make the negative habit harder to execute goes a long way to making the cultivation of the new habits easier. Enjoy the show! Intentional Practice
"Isn't all practice intentional?" Visit: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY" a recent #1 Amazon Hot New Release. EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY debuts as a "prequel" and completes a "trilogy" MG never knew existed. Martin began writing The Habit Factor® shortly before 2005; it was published in 2010. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. EVERYTHING culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the pursuit of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal attainment. In this episode, MG shares a quick story from a recent consultancy project. Martin was hired to help create some scripts based upon The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. method for habit development and goal achievement. (Since there is an NDA that is all he can share about the project.) A script involving the term "intentional practice," was being reviewed and an associate asked, "Isn't all practice intentional?" It's a great question and the answer is nuanced. In short, YES and NO. There are degrees to practicing relative to its intentionality. The more specialized a practice becomes, the more intentional it becomes. The real takeaway for the listener is this: "Intentional" and "deliberate" practice (as they are synonyms), can and should be used to cultivate both HABITS and SKILLS! In fact, that is the premise of The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. methodology: One can intentionally practice positive habits in order to cultivate them and achieve their goals more quickly. Extraordinary II
"Zigging while others zag ensures extraordinary results. That's both the risk and the reward." Visit: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY" a recent #1 Amazon Hot New Release! EVERYTHING culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the pursuit of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal attainment. EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY debuts as a "prequel" and completes a "trilogy" MG never knew existed. Martin began writing The Habit Factor® shortly before 2005; it was published in 2010. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG reviews how language guides us toward insights about topics and problems we want to learn more about and solve. When it comes to achieving extraordinary results, it's clear the requirement is to have behaviors and habits that are out of the ordinary. Thus, "extra-ordinary." Of course, these extraordinary results could be undesirable as well. Either way, exceptional and extraordinary results come from doing things out of the ordinary. Martin shares how he used the same language discovery process when writing The Habit Factor®. A critical insight was observed, the Latin root of HABIT is, "HABIT-US," essentially meaning "condition and/or character." Martin then shares a remarkable story recounted in The Pressure Paradox™ about concentration. One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Rod Laver, provided key insights on the topic. Rod explains to Martin that he "just happened to play his best when it mattered most." Martin asks Rod to clarify exactly how he managed to "play his best when it mattered most." Enjoy the show! Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG reviews the magical concept of time. How time is both real and important sometimes and unimportant and illusory at other times. MG reminds listeners that there are at least four prior episodes on TIME at https://podcast.thehabitfactor.com/?s=time Jim Rohn, the late great personal development legend, used to say, "The good news is you will arrive ten years from now. The question is, where?" Quickly reflect on yourself – your being – at the ages of 5, 15, 25, 35, etc. You'll notice one thing immediately; you are in a perpetual state of becoming. You are perpetually transforming as you develop new skills and habits. Few organizations are more goal-oriented than NASA. Yet, what do they do when they miss a deadline for an important launch – a goal date? They certainly don't freak out. They don't panic, and they don't abandon their goal. They just reset the launch date. You should be setting and adjusting your goal deadlines similarly. The most important thing is to be ON THE PATH! When you're moving toward your most important goals and ideals daily, you're on the path. This adds immense value to your life and others as well as purpose and meaning. Enjoy the show! How Systems Help to Create Habits & Skills
The military and business franchises are great examples. Both embody the "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System" perfectly. Each reveals how crucial it is to frame one's behaviors with a supportive environment and narrative to foster new habits and skills. Visit: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY" a recent #1 Amazon Hot New Release! EVERYTHING culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the pursuit of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal attainment. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG clarifies what a "system" really is and how they influence the development of new habits and skills. Unfortunately, many thought leaders in this personal development space define "systems" as a "series of habits." That is incorrect. A series of habits is a ritual, not a "system." Two fantastic examples of systems in action are business franchises and the military. Each, by design, bookends their employees'/soldiers' behaviors with essential core narratives (values, meaning, purpose, mission – see the inner concentric circle in the image above) and a supportive environment (see outer concentric circle). Together those components equate to a "system." That system helps to forge behaviors into new habits and skills. Each organization then aligns their employees'/soldiers' behaviors to their respective goals to make them remarkably effective! Each reveals how YOU can and should implement the "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System" to design the new habits and skills that will help you to achieve your most important goals and ideals. Perpetual Becoming: EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY book launch ends 10.23.22
"I want to be more outspoken at work...I believe that because I'm an introvert, it's holding me back." How's that for a story? BOOK LAUNCH ENDS on 10.23.22! https://everythingastory.com EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the pursuit of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal attainment. EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY debuts as a "prequel" and completes a "trilogy" MG never knew existed. Martin began writing The Habit Factor® shortly before 2005; it was published in 2010. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG recounts a story from his coaching master class last week. A coach asked about a tough client. Listen to his answer here! ================== EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY presents a new, paradigm-shifting behavior model that anyone can use to change their stories and their habits, to redirect their lives. This new behavior model is called the “3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System.” STORY is at its core and reveals how human thoughts and behaviors 'echo' and 'reverberate.' Older behavior models are confusing and represent human behavior in a linear fashion. The 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System" reveals how human behavior truly unfolds, in an "echo-system." Human behaviors echo and reverberate! There’s a reason people say things like, "I like the vibe here," or, "that resonated with me." Environments, thoughts, and behaviors influence each other. =============================== Dr. Peter Chee, founder of ITD World, one of Asia’s largest executive coaching and training firms, shares, "Grunburg's 3 Circles of behavior model is paradigm-shifting – it's helped to transform our executive coaching. Because of EVERYTHING, we teach, coach, and train: Change your story, change your habits, change your life." EVERYTHING debuts as a "prequel" and completes a "trilogy" MG never knew existed. Martin began writing The Habit Factor® shortly before 2005; it was published in 2010. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG explains that when it comes to the "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System," our body is part of one's "environment". This idea may seem like a mind-bender. Yet, according to this model, if something is not one's feelings or emotions (conduits), or, behaviors (middle concentric circle) or, thoughts (inner circle) then it must be the environment! Our environment is BOTH our sensory inputs; the things that will influence how we think, feel and behave. And, it's our results – the things we create, our outputs! If someone wakes up feeling "achy" that's an environmental stimulus affecting their feelings. Then, they say, "I don't feel so great!" And, they go walk downstairs (behavior changed). It's their body that influenced their feelings, behaviors and what they were thinking/their stories. STORYBEHAVIORS Note: that feelings and emotions are conduits between the major, three concentric circles. MG investigates and discusses a few other nuances and then reaffirms the importance of this new behavior model relative to pursuing one's goals and ideals! Learn about how to correctly assess, direct and steer your stories and about the "six stories that really freakin' matter." EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY, Prelaunch Series: 6 of 6
"To ensure personal transformation is effective it must be a three-pronged approach: one's stories (thoughts), habits and skills, and their environment must be aligned—congruent and working together." EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY goes on sale 10.1.22! Grab the FREE excerpt while available: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING" culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the interest of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal achievement. EVERYTHING debuts as a "prequel" and completes a "trilogy" MG never knew existed. Martin began writing The Habit Factor® shortly before 2005; it was published in 2010. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG revisits the new behavior model, the "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System". An innovative behavior model that reveals how it's one's thoughts (in the form of STORIES), about EVERYTHING, that resides at its epicenter As Anias Nin put it, "We don't see the world as it is, we see it as we are." Thus, our STORIES, about EVERYTHING influence and direct our results. While prevalent behavior models demonstrate human behavior in a linear or circular fashion. The "3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System" reveals, in three concentric circles, how each major circle/"component influencer" reverberates—echoes back and forth to influence the others. One doesn't have to look far to notice examples of how their STORIES echo to influence their feelings, emotions, behaviors, and in many cases their environment. Think of a sad story and you'll likely feel sad or maybe even angry. If the story makes you angry enough, you may even punch a wall! STORYBEHAVIORS Note: that feelings and emotions are conduits between the major, three concentric circles. This "behavior echo-system" is something YOU live within. Everyone does. The echoing happens in both directions; "outside in" and "inside out" (see model above) MG goes on to share how some of the stories he was telling himself led to unfavorable behaviors and actions, impacting his results. It was only after going through a "Why worm hole analysis" (something covered in the book) that he was able to discover a handful of un-serving, debilitating stories he no longer needed to carry around. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG introduces the concept of cognitive "compression." An idea that illustrates how humans, as "advanced thought creatures," think predominantly in terms of story. The capacity to use story as a cognitive device characterizes human nature. It may even be one of your great super-powers. Unfortunately, the same "superpower" creates challenges when we infer stories and project meaning inaccurately. A great example is the story of Ernest Hemingway who was allegedly asked to pen a six-word story. His response: "For Sale: Babies shoes, never worm." Notice how you may have automatically—without conscious thought—deduced a story from those six words. That story may be entirely false of misleading. When it comes to our goals and ideals, we do the same thing. Accidentially, pushing them further away by projecting and inferring storylines that hold us back! Learn more about how to correctly harness your stories and the six most important stories that really freakin' matter. His work on habit is intuitive, practical, and impactful. In this book, he correctly highlights our natural drive for storytelling and how we can direct the stories we tell ourselves. This change in narrative is at the heart of personal transformation. Grunburg’s approachable prose and flow shows much wisdom and is straightforward to apply. I hope more people learn about these ideas and about Martin in the coming years!" Glenn R. Fox, PhDNeuroscientist and Asst. EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY, Prelaunch Series: 4 of 6 (Gunnysacking)
"What's in your gunnysack? Is your emotional disposition an asset or liability." EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY goes on sale 10.1.22! In this episode, MG introduces the concept of the "gunnysack." An older term used in psychology to convey how people tend to carry around emotional hurts. Unfortunately, many people store these pains (in the form of stories), without processing them or the negative emotions. Thus, they feel weighed down. Since all goal achievement requires energy, negative emotions become problematic. The idea isn't to ignore, forget or discard these emotionally charged stories. The objective is to process and learn from them. In so doing, one can distance themselves from the event, learn valuable lessons and move on. EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY, Prelaunch Series: 3 of 6 (Steering Your Stories)
"We assume that circumstances shape our stories. But what I’ve found time and again in my work is that the exact opposite happens; the way we narrate our lives shapes what they become." ~Lori Gottlieb EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY goes on sale 10.1.22! Grab the FREE excerpt while available: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING" culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the interest of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal achievement. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. In this episode, MG recaps Lorie Gottlieb's important observation and overlays it against James Allen's insight, "You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you." The implications become inescapable: OUR THOUGHTS DIRECT OUR FUTURE. MG uses this to build upon the idea of the innovative 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System and how these thoughts reverberate across this Echo-System that everyone lives within. Further, this "echo-system" provides a way to detach, distance oneself from their stories to assess their value. MG peers deeper into congitive linguistics insights relative to "compression" and "scripting." All told, these ideas add a depth and richness that make EVERYTHING an educational and entertaining read.
