Guarantees!

"If you want a guarantee, buy a toaster." ~Clint Eastwood Humans love guarantees. Yet, when it comes to goal achievement, finding a guarantee is nearly impossible. Goal achievement is far less about guarantees and much more about probabilities. Nobody is guaranteed to achieve the life of their dreams. They are, however, FAR more likely to achieve such a life by aiming for clear goals and ideals. In a world short of guarantees, we enhance our odds of success by establishing a great plan (strategy); tracking core, essential behaviors aligned with our goals; and having a clear picture of the ideal outcome. Imagine being blindfolded and trying to throw a dart at a dartboard's bullseye. What's the probability of hitting the bullseye when you don't even know where the dartboard is? With no vision, and no target to aim for, the likelihood that you'll hit your target is close to zero. Now, take off the blindfold, aim at the bullseye, and practice each and every day. What's the likelihood you'll end up hitting the bullseye, someday? It's time to take off the blindfold, set clear goals and ideals, and work toward our targets. Enjoy the episode! Constructs

Why do we construct so many obstacles in our lives? Have you constructed anything lately? Constructs are anything that you create—manufacture—within your life. The "interesting" thing is that even our thoughts are constructs; that is a very important awareness. Last week, we reviewed the concept that the best way for anyone to get out of a hole is to stop digging. The "digging" is our habitual behavior that put us in the "hole" (an undesirable position) in the first place. (Stop Digging!) In this episode, we acknowledge that many of the holes we may find ourselves in have been created by our own thinking. A key reason for constructing anything ought to be to facilitate our lives, not to make them more difficult. Yet, how often do we construct thoughts and stories that are self-defeating and do not serve our goals and ideals? Rather than constructing thoughts that are beneficial and supportive, we create barriers—obstacles—that make our goals and ideals even harder to achieve! So, how aware are you of the thoughts and stories you construct each and every day? Are you building bridges or barriers to your goals and ideals? Enjoy the episode! Stop Digging!

"The first law of holes: If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging." Are you in a hole? A hole is simply a metaphor for a situation or circumstance you'd prefer not to be in. There is an old adage, sometimes referred to as the "first law of holes," which states: "If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging." Too much debt? Out of shape or overweight? Poor relationships? Drinking too much alcohol, etc.? Any of these situations could be considered "holes" in which you may find yourself standing. You probably get the picture—and that picture should be of you, standing at least waist deep, in a hole! Here are a few key questions: Are you still shoveling? Why are you still shoveling? What is it going to take to stop the shoveling? Do you continue to spend on credit? Dig! Maybe you continue to eat unhealthy foods! Dig! Perhaps you continue to say the wrong things. Dig! Time to assess your results. Are you standing in any holes? Are there any situations you've created that you'd like to get out of? Ask yourself what habit you may need to cease right away—TO STOP THE DIGGING—so you can begin the process of bettering your situation today! Enjoy the episode! Immersion

"By immersing yourself into a new, different, and challenging environments, the last thing you'll be able to do is feel depressed or sorry for yourself." MG invites Jen back on to discuss this week's Mind-Bullet, "Immersion." By definition, to immerse yourself means to involve yourself deeply into a particular activity or interest. In a recent interview with a fitness expert who had suffered a lot of personal trauma in his youth, he mentioned how immersing himself into new activities, such as kitesurfing, helps him to avoid getting depressed or even making poor decisions and even creating bad habits. By changing his immediate environment and immersing himself into the unknown, he had no time to let his mind get away from him. By immersing himself in unfamiliar environments, all his senses are engaged, and his complete concentration and focus is required. Next time you feel depressed or off balance, consider how you might immerse yourself into a new, different, or unique environment, which is likely to consume your attention and focus it toward a new, favorable direction! Small Wins!

"Unhappiness is tied to a feeling of not being in control. By establishing small wins each day you not only feel happier, you move you closer to your goals!" MG invites Jen back on H2G to discuss this week's Mind-Bullet, "Small Wins", a different spin on the importance of self-efficacy, the ability to produce a desired result. Coming off last weeks episode, "Intentionality" we know humans are goal-achievement machines. Thus, they must be setting goals. The key to bridging the gap, going from point "A" to point "B" is to compile small wins as often as possible along the way. This is precisely why tracking habits that are aligned with your goals is so effective. Each time you tick-off a habit, you feel as though you've inched closer to your goal and you demonstrate self-efficacy—the ability to produce a desired result! Thus, pilling up small wins provides a sense of purpose as well as a feeling of control. Two important aspects that influence your ongoing effectiveness and overall happiness! Enjoy the show! Intentionality!

"Intentionality is your superpower, and the best news is, you're already great at using it!" When was the last time you went shopping? When was the last time you got a haircut? When was the last time you ate some food? That fact is, you're already an incredible, purposeful, deliberate, goal-driven machine. You use your intentionality every day, all day long. Getting your hair cut wasn't an accident. You set up an appointment and then showed up. You didn't just arrive at a grocery store; you realized you needed food and made a plan to go shop. You didn't accidentally start reading a book; you intended to read the book, so you picked it up. Intentionality isn't just a superpower, though; it's your means to design the life you want, AND it's a demonstration of your intelligence in action! Being intentional—being purposeful, being goal-driven—equates to intelligence in action. Tony Robbins put it this way: "We all have goals; the problem is, most of us have really crappy goals, like, 'I just want to get through the day,' or, 'I just want to get through the month.'" The truth is, goals are a must in life, and the bigger, more inspiring or even scarier the goal, the more inspiring your life is likely to become. That doesn't mean you have to begin with a huge, scary goal, but it does mean you must set goals. "In life, goals are NOT optional." By using your intention, being purposeful and deliberate with your life, you design your ideal future and begin to move toward it. This is the process to realize "success," and it's found in the daily effort to move toward your ideal future. The method that takes you there is to follow P.A.R.R.—to intentionally create and align habits that support your goals. By Planning, Acting, Recording and Reassessing daily, you put your intentionality—your superpower—to work! Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? The DAYS!

"Like painted kites, those days and nights they went flyin' by." ~Frank Sinatra (Summer Wind) Building off last week's episode, "Bridging the Gap," this week, we review a force that makes progress possible: TIME! Some view time like the flow of a river. Brian Tracy uses the analogy of a delivery truck backing up to deliver 24 fresh hours each new day. MG loves Sinatra's imagery of days "flyin' by like painted kites" from his hit song, "Summer Wind." Whichever imagery you choose, there's no mistaking just how quickly "The DAYS" go flyin' by. To illustrate, MG tries an experiment—an exercise—and asks the listeners to give it a try. This is an Arnold Schwarzenegger exercise called "The Vacuum," where you attempt to suck in your stomach and hold it in, as far as you can, for a minute or so. MG set the intention to do the "Vacuum" twice a day, a few minutes at a time, for seven days straight. The purpose is simply to illustrate just how quickly The DAYS go flyin' by. Whatever small behavior or exercise you may be trying to cultivate into a habit, there is only one way to make it stick: be consistent and respect "The Days." The very best way to respect "The Days" and appreciate how they can bring you closer to your goals is to intentionally track the behaviors that are aligned with your goals following, P.A.R.R. Plan, Act, Record & Reassess. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? Check out the Habits & Goals Mastery course, NOW ON-DEMAND! Bridging the GAP!

"When the student is ready, the lessons and teachers will appear." Approximately four years after presenting to IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management), James B., who witnessed The Habit Factor® presentation, finally decided to listen to the audio book. FOUR. YEARS. LATER. Afterward, he was excited to put habit alignment and the free habits-to-goals tracking sheet to work. He shared this story with me via email. This week's episode is about "Bridging the Gap." Sometimes the steps we take are long and swift, and sometimes they are slow and small. To span the bridge, we must keep moving forward. If intelligence is goal-directed behavior, and we are "intelligent" beings, then we must set goals. We must have an ideal to strive for, but that doesn't mean we have to be unhappy about our present circumstances. We can do both: be grateful for our present and have a goal to strive for. At any given time, we could be at point "A" while we're attempting to arrive at point "B." The challenge for ALL of us, in theory, is to bridge the gap between those two points. The gap is the chasm we all have to cross at some point. This crossing happens on at least two levels: psychological and behavioral. In order to span the gap, we must do more than just think positively; we have to take repeated, consistent action. We must forge the habits that are aligned with our goals! This is what The Habit Factor® has taught for more than 11 years: Develop the consistent behaviors—the habits—that are aligned with your goals. This is how you create instant momentum and develop self-efficacy, the ability to produce a desired result, which, in turn, fosters happiness! Nobody spans the gap in a single day, but you can begin bridging that gap, making progress, TODAY. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? The Best Day Ever—NOT!

"While every day can't be the best day ever, your best day is almost always right around the corner. Realizing it, though, depends upon how well you navigate your worst days." Gurus everywhere promote silly claims like, "HOW YOU CAN HAVE YOUR BEST DAY EVER, EVERY DAY" Here's the bad news: You can't have your best day ever, every day. The good news: Your best day ever is almost always awaiting you! Realizing those "best days ever" depends greatly upon how well you navigate your sh*tty days. Too often, people find a way to make their bad days much worse due to emotional fragility—taking too many things personally. Unfortunately, there will be days when awful things will happen to us and/or our loved ones. When that happens, the environment is not conducive or supportive (for the time being) enough for us to pursue our goals and ideals. In times like these, rather than wasting energy fighting unfortunate circumstances or taking things personally, letting our emotions get out of control, it's best to simply "duck and cover," knowing, "this too shall pass." Possessing the critical understanding of what is within your control versus what is out of your control, and managing your response accordingly, will help to ensure that your best day ever is just around the corner. Trending Toward Zero

"To break the inertia: S.T.A.R.T.! Simple Today Actions Repeated & Tracked" It's inevitable: We are ALL trending toward zero. Laziness. Stillness. Eventually, even nothingness. However, that's a consideration that doesn't have to be depressing or debilitating; rather, it can be useful. The great mathematician, physicist, and philosopher Blaise Pascal put it this way: "Man is equally incapable of seeing the nothingness from which he emerges and the infinity in which he is engulfed." Next time you feel stuck, recognize the dynamic, universal forces at play, namely inertia and gravity for starters. The key to flipping the script is to get started! Just S.T.A.R.T.! Simple (small). Today. Actions, Repeated and Tracked! Once the inertia is broken, the task forward is much easier. Plato put it this way: "The beginning is the most important part of the work." Thus, whatever you may be attempting to do, whatever your goal may be, the real challenge is to GET STARTED. Nothing is done without a beginning. Once you've started, keep the momentum going by following P.A.R.R. Plan. Act. Record & Reassess! Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? The Incremental

"The longest journey begins with a single step." ~Lao Tzu The Ocho—Season 8—is here, and we follow up last week's episode, "Try Slow," with this week's offering, "The Incremental." This episode was inspired by an illustration MG saw on Facebook: A man, struggling, on his tippy-toes, arms outstretched, attempting to reach the first rung of a ladder—yet the very first step was too far away. It's tough to climb any ladder when the rungs are too far apart. It's equally tough to develop any habit and move toward any goal when the expectations, targets, and next steps are too far apart. The key to habit development and goal achievement is the incremental: Small steps that are attainable, reachable, and achievable. To put our expectations, targets, and goals too far out of reach would make them about as worthwhile as a ladder with steps that are too far apart. Recognizing the INCREMENTAL is critical. Whether it's for saving money, getting out of debt, writing a book, or running a marathon, respecting and mastering the incremental is the path to goal achievement. Enjoy the episode! Try Slow

"Slow is smooth and smooth is fast." The Ocho—Season 8—is here, and along with it, our first episode: Try Slow. A sign in MG's neighborhood cautions drivers to slow down. Yet the more he passes the sign, the more meaning the message has: "TRY SLOW." Try slow to be more efficient and effective. Try slow to be healthier. Try slow to concentrate and focus better. Try slow to remember things. Try slow to be a better friend by listening more. "Try slow" is a catchy motto and a welcome message in our fast-moving, modern life. Trying "slow" might not just save some kid from the dangers of speeding drivers. Trying "slow" is likely to make you a better human. Enjoy the episode! The Dishwasher!

"If you cannot be happy unloading a dishwasher, you cannot be happy." Today's episode is all about real happiness. Happiness involves a couple major ingredients: choice and gratitude. Consider for moment all the incredible "things" that must take place for you to be unloading your dishwasher. You can begin with the obvious: Unloading a dishwasher likely means you have eyes, hands, fingers, and arms, and that you're standing (legs and feet), for starters. Then, consider the first-world commodities at your disposal: plumbing, electricity, not to mention a home and shelter. Finally, if you're unloading a dishwasher, it likely means that you had some food to eat! Of course, the very same awareness should be applied to various other "chores": Laundry, making your bed, mowing the lawn, washing your car, maybe even being stuck in traffic! Thus, unloading the dishwasher is a terrific litmus test of one's capacity for true happiness. So, if you cannot be happy unloading the dishwasher, chances are good, you cannot be happy! The FRUITS!

"The roots create the fruits; the fruits reveal the seeds." In today's episode, we invite Jen Grant back on the program to discuss our Mind-Bullet: The Fruit! What do ALL fruits have in common? Correct. Seeds! While we should probably be more focused on the process (our habits/the roots) that creates the fruits (money, car, big home, etc.), it turns out that focusing on the fruits reveals something extraordinarily important: seeds! Tony Robbins likes to say, "Success leaves clues!" MG seconds the observation and points out that fruit, by definition must contain seeds. Further, it's the seeds that offer the promise that, when planted and cared for within a conducive environment, they will produce rewards! Jen and MG further the analogy by referencing the resistance each seed experiences initially as it struggles to see the light of day. Similarly, its our efforts—building new habits—that experience extreme resistance as we put in the practice, work and discipline in order for the seeds to produce fruit. The great reward is knowing that, over time, resistance for a well-planted and cared for seed will diminish as our habit strength increases! Enjoy the episode! Banks of the River

"Discipline is a habit: cultivate it." "No man is free who cannot command himself." Pythagoras If you are not in control of yourself (your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors), you will never know true freedom. In today's episode, MG shares how, for many years, he grappled with what appeared to be conflicting primary values: freedom and family. Upon further reflection, he made the realization that the banks of a river provide direction, power and strength. Similarly, a family also can provide the very same qualities: direction, power and strength. Thus, the values of family and freedom don't necessarily conflict; rather, family and freedom can be complementary values that guide our energy. A similar analogy can be made for tracking behaviors and habits while cultivating discipline. When we track our habits and behaviors, like the banks of a river, we add controls and constraints to our energy force, further guiding and directing our power. It turns out that we discover real freedom when we develop discipline in our lives, allowing our energy to be guided and focused. Consider the opposite: We'd have aimless, disorganized energy heading nowhere in particular, achieving nothing. What is a river without its banks? Power and energy dissipated, flowing nowhere, "achieving" nothing. Listen in for more on cultivating discipline as a habit and achieving freedom inside a powerful structure. Enjoy the episode! Tabula Rasa

"At birth, you have only instincts, no habits." How many beliefs are you born with? How many habits are you born with? In today's episode, MG revisits the concept of Tabula rasa—blank slate—to help us recognize and challenge any limiting beliefs and habits that may be keeping us stuck. It's important to know that we've acquired these limiting thought and behavior habits. They weren't ours since birth; they've been inscribed upon our character (Tabula rasa) as we've lived our lives, dealing with life's daily challenges and struggles. Knowing that we've picked up self-deprecating thoughts and habits along the way also means we know we can change them. With intention, reflection, and practice (PARR), we can inscribe new habits of thought and behavior to produce new, different, and better outcomes. Tabula rasa is a powerful awareness tool, helping us to understand that how we view ourselves and our limitations is just a story we've acquired via habit. Habits are strengthened by repetition, over time. However, unlike other creatures that can't change their habits, we can! New, positive habits, repeated over time, help us create a powerful new story. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? Good Judgment

How often do you judge your own judgment? We often tell our kids, "Use good judgment!" Yet, when it comes to our own judgment, we tend to forget the advice. In this week's episode, MG invites Jen Grant to co-host as they explore the significance judgement plays in our life. When is judgment valuable? When is judgment harmful? If we ruminate in the negative feelings judgment may bring, it can be harmful. If judgment derails your progress and keeps you off track for too long, it's harmful. However, great value arises when judgment helps us to identify improvement and how we can move toward our goals and ideals more effectively and efficiently. Good judgment is what helps companies to improve their products and services, making them more successful. Be sure to assess the value of your judgments. Notice if your judgments are derailing you. Should that happen, do your best to pause, filter through the debris and find the value. Good judgment can help anyone to make better decisions, form new habits, and move toward their goals more quickly. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? The Subconscious Mind

“Everything is hard before it is easy." ~Goethe Why do humans possess a subconscious mind? In season two, we covered the subconscious mind relative to the "Super-Conscious". In today's episode, we wonder why the subconscious mind exists. As science is about studying "things" that can be measured and observed, some scientists may even argue the subconscious mind or even the "mind" itself, does not exist. MG speculates otherwise and reiterates the important distinction between the mind and the brain, an idea covered in The Habit Factor® (book). Unlike animals born with "instincts", humans are endowed with the capacity to program their subconscious with new habits and skills. Not unlike a computer programmer, we can write a script (with intention and practice) that automates a behavior or skill over time. The process to program the subconscious with a new habit or skill—is by following P.A.R.R. (Plan, Act, Record & Reassess). As humans develop new skills and habits the behaviors ascend through the various levels of competence (Wikipedia) and, over time become more habit-like. No other animal in the world can intentionally learn and align new skills and habits to their goals and ideals. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? Throw-Away Days

“It doesn't matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop." ~Confucius Some days are better than others. Sometimes you're on track and sometimes you are not. A way to ensure you keep moving forward, despite setbacks, is to begin tracking your habits. By tracking your habits, you reinforce both your intention and commitment. So, when setbacks happen, you're able to get back on track more quickly. MG recounts a couple stories about getting thrown off track and how considering these days as "throw-away days" helps him to reset more quickly and keep moving forward. Further, he shares a story about a guy he recently coached to follow the tracking process and P.A.R.R. who experienced multiple setbacks, including; a colonoscopy, a tax deadline and a family member needing medical care, all of which derailed his progress. In short, he didn't experience a throw-away day, he experienced a throw-away week! The best part, he was already tracking his habits and knew to expect throw away days. Thus, the real key—the essence to staying on track—is to continue tracking by following P.A.R.R. (Plan, Act, Record, & Reassess) which factors in the concept of throw-away days! Enjoy the episode! TKT!

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible." ~Dalai Lama Kindness is a habit (and trait) that is learnable and strengthened with practice. In Season 5, episode 50 the "Kindness" topic was previously explored. In this episode, MG expounds on the subject, citing his experience tracking "TKT" ("The Kind Thing"), a habit he's had fun working on. MG gives credit for the idea to a fellow entrepreneur who decided to start tracking his "kindness" habit in a goals accountability group. Using The Habit Factor app, Martin code-named "The Kind Thing" as "TKT" and suggests that tracking acts of "kindness" is up there with the other "pro tips" like tracking at least one diet and one exercise habit, regardless of the overarching goal. You're encouraged to give "TKT" a try and add it to your habit tracking. Not only is "TKT" likely to make you feel better about yourself but it's likely to foster a habit which will serve you for a lifetime. Enjoy the episode! Success: Just a Feeling

“Success is nothing other than a feeling. Some people feel 'successful' after taking their dog on a walk. Others feel like a failure if they don't get 1,000 likes on Instagram." What is success, really? Part of understanding success is knowing how you define it— that is, what are you aiming to achieve? Having said that, there's a great argument to be made that success isn't something to be achieved as much as a moment to be appreciated. Chances are good, though, that the truth lies in the middle. Success is both something to achieve and something to appreciate that generates a feeling of success. For some, a big house makes them feel successful; maybe for a day, maybe for a month or year. For others, success includes a life of service and contribution that provides fulfillment. Both situations equate to a moment in time when one FEELS SUCCESSFUL. Thus, to feel successful, it's important to understand how you define success, know what makes you feel successful, and how to manage your emotions with precision most of the time. Rejection!

“During the darkest days of the Model 3 program, I reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla (for 1/10 of our current value). He refused to take the meeting." @elonmusk As much as rejection sucks, often, the further removed from it we become, the more it seems like a blessing. After a rejection, two narratives may emerge. One takes us toward a direction of doom—a story and outcome we do not desire. But the other narrative can be hopeful—a story of possibilities. The idea is to consciously redirect rejection toward the positive narrative which fosters the emotions that set you up for a win, later. In fact, rejection's greatest value may be that it fosters emotional resilience and self-reliance! After a rejection, be aware of the story you're telling yourself. For example, "Oh sh*t! I didn't get that job, nobody's going to hire anyone my age," or, "They wouldn't fund our company, we have way too much debt, nobody is ever going to invest in our company." If you're spiraling down this negative path, think about Elon Musk in the above scenario. After Apple's rejection, he remained resilient and steered his company through troubled waters. He was able to look back and laugh at the rejection, noting that Telsa, at the time, was worth 1/10th of its present value. Listen in for more on handling rejection, how to redirect rejection to foster the positive narrative and emotions that set you up for winning later, and how to craft the supportive story that will carry you to your eventual success. Heaven & Hell, A Different Take

“What if hell was the experience of meeting the person you could have become the moment before you die, and heaven was the same experience because you fulfilled your potential —or came close?" Today’s Mind Bullet challenges us to reimagine a new and different concept of heaven and hell. MG's always recommending imagination exercises, so this one grabbed his attention. Consider the best version of yourself—the ultimate person you ever could become. Whether or not you actually get there is beside the point; the pursuit is the success. In fact, this, arguably, is what the Habit Factor is all about: the pursuit of idealization (see our episode devoted to idealization). How do you match up with your ideal version? How have your habits matched up with that fully idealized future self? It doesn’t matter if you’re not there yet, or not even close. You have the power to pivot, change direction, forge new habits, and continue pursuing the future of your dreams. This mental exercise is an excellent wake-up call for all of us, forcing us to reevaluate our idealization checklist, taking stock of our mind, body, spirit, and social wellness, as well as our emotional, professional, lifestyle, and financial goals. Where are you now? Where do you need to focus and improve? Listen in for more on meeting your ideal future self; why the effort and pursuit of idealization are key, even if we don’t get there; and figuring out what habits we need to align to our goals to head in the right direction. My Gift to You!

“If you had a $10 million racehorse, how would you treat it?" Today's Mind Bullet exposes a basic truth about you and your place in the world. Each of us has been given a $10 million racehorse, and that very gift begs us to ask this simple question: "How are you going to treat this expensive thoroughbred?" Quick contemplation should lead you to one answer: VERY WELL. In other words, you'll ensure it gets the proper nutrition and enjoys ample exercise and sleep. In short, you're going to make absolutely certain its wellness habits are in order. The punchline is this: YOU ARE THE PRICELESS THOROUGHBRED. Building on an old story Zig Ziglar used to share, MG reiterates this message. Whether you feel like a $10 million thoroughbred or not, you are! And NOW—this moment—is the only time that really matters to make the choices that support this truth! Enjoy the episode! How are you going to improve your results in 2021? NOW ON-DEMAND! Balance Good

“Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad; better pack up, go home.” ~Mr. Miyagi (Karate Kid) Today’s Mind Bullet explores the monster concept of BALANCE. Balance may be one of the most misunderstood life principles, yet it is a master key to an effective life. Thus, Mr. Miyagi nailed it when he said, "Balance bad; better pack up and go home. Understand?" The first core principle is that balance is NOT something you should ignore, and it isn't a MYTH, as many "gurus" proclaim. Balance is a very real and inescapable concept and principle essential to understand for one's general wellness. The first core idea is that balance is less about a moment in time and much more about a process—it's about adjustments. Thus, the feeling at any one moment in time that you are off-balance is actually a positive signal, guiding you to make adjustments. Einstein put it brilliantly when he said, "Balance is like riding a bicycle; in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving." Consider the tightrope walker: At any moment in time, she appears OFF balance, yet she arrives at the end of the rope because of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of tiny adjustments along the way. Sharpen the Axe & Saw!

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ~Abraham Lincoln Today’s Mind Bullet explores the famous Abraham Lincoln quote above, and like many of our mind bullets, we'll tackle it from a few different angles. In The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, the late, great Stephen Covey uses the above quote as part of the 7th habit, “Sharpen the Saw.” Sharpening the saw, (or axe), is about refreshing ourselves and making ourselves better. (Check out our Automaticity and Learning episodes for more on this idea.) Learning, working out, and taking care of ourselves are examples of sharpening the saw. Anything we do to better ourselves improves our efficiency and our effectiveness. When you devote time to your energy, your energy gives you back time. Effectiveness is doing the right things. Efficiency is doing them correctly. Little point in being efficient if we aren’t first effective. Listen in for more on sharpening the axe and saw to make yourself more efficient and effective. How to Quickly Get Moving Toward Your Most Important Goals

“A ship is safe in the harbor, but that’s not what ships are built for.” – William Shedd Today’s MBM is a quick hitter that ponders the topic of motivation. What is it that REALLY gets us moving, helping us to take action and gain momentum toward our goals? We've hit this topic from many angles in the past, for example, asking ourselves WHY we seek out a goal, but the real litmus test is emotion. Think about a situation that riles your emotions. For example, what if you’re in a restaurant with poor food and service. You’ll be motivated to take action—leave, consult a manager, etc. We take action when we're emotionally charged, and we can use this type of passion to motivate ourselves enough to get moving toward a goal. We often THINK we want to do something. We think there's a goal and a desire, but nothing truly changes because we’re lacking the emotional spark. Years can go by with a vague desire in the back of our minds, but no real emotional catalyst. Think about a habit you’re trying to create or a goal you’re trying to manifest. Is it emotionally charged? Is there a good WHY or story that sparks your movement and momentum? Until you actually start on your goal-achievement or habit-tracking journey, you can’t gain momentum. And you can’t start until you find an emotional impetus. For example, years ago, MG was able to take action on a meaningful goal when he imagined the concept of his own demise. What would he regret if time was up? This story charged him, finally helping him take meaningful action toward his goal. Listen in for more on finding the emotional spark that will propel you to start on your goal-achievement journey, determining what you NEED in order to get emotionally charged, and how to push out of your comfort zone to grow into your potential. Learning

“A book holds a house of gold." - Chinese Proverb Learning is remembering, and mastery is repetition, so this episode circles back to some basic learning elements we should keep in mind as we continue our goal-achievement journey. We’ve covered the topic of learning in the past, notably with “What's the Best Way to Learn?" (Season 6) and "Learning Mastery" (Season 3), but today we’re focusing on learning as a core element for growth and goal achievement. Our language constricts and confines our thought process. For example, think of the word “habit.” For too many years, and even to some extent today, habit had a negative connotation. There was no defined process for focusing on and tracking habits to achieve goals. (In fact, some in academia even thought habits formed from achieved goals, not the opposite.) If language forms our logic, and we are the programmers of our lives, it behooves us to read and learn from as many resources as possible, both inside and outside our usual interests. By constantly learning, we're exposed to ideas that strengthen and broaden our spectrum of knowledge; thus, we upgrade our own personal operating system. (As in all things, there must be a balance in learning to avoid paralysis by over-analysis.) Listen in for more on the importance of learning, how to explore knowledge amid movement and adaptation, why goals are intelligence in action, and how best to act as the programmer of your own life. Controll II

“The ultimate guru is you." It’s almost inevitable that we’re revisiting the topic of Control, which we first pondered in 2019 and are now circling back to discuss. (Listen to our earlier thoughts on Control.) This MBM was sparked during a plane ride, where MG was listening to a podcast from a “guru” talking about control. He theorized that for our entire lives, we've deceived ourselves into the idea of controlling things. His point: We control NOTHING. Our problem/challenge with this idea is that it’s dichotomous thinking. While we’re not in control of millions of things, including the environment and other people, we ARE in control of our thoughts and much of our behavior. It’s not an either/or situation: We’re not in control, and we are in control. It’s important to accept what we’re NOT in control of, and then take responsibility for what we can control. If we do as the "guru" advised and let go of all control, we’re abdicating our personal responsibility to direct our lives. (Another reason why YOU are your own best guru.) Listen in for more on how setting goals is NOT optional, recognizing what we’re in control of, and accepting what we’re NOT in control of, so we can continue forward, adapting to change, and pursuing our dreams and ideals no matter what obstacles appear in our path. Automaticity

“Everything is difficult before it is easy.” ~Goethe It may be a big word, but automaticity is what we're looking for on the path to goal achievement, and it's why we practice (for more, check out our Practice episode). Automaticity is the process of turning the "difficult" into the "easy," and it's what guides our ideas about habit formation and HabitStrength. Think about tying your shoes—a task so difficult and frustrating when we're trying to learn, but which becomes so easy we're barely even conscious when we do it. Automaticity is the underlying strength of habit and skill. When we develop automaticity of the habits that truly matter, we re-wire our brains to put these behaviors on auto-pilot. Listen in for more on programming your brain via automaticity as you intentionally align your habits and behaviors with your goals. Enjoy the episode! Two Steps Forward

“If the path is clear, we're probably on the wrong path.” Progress is rarely, if ever, a straight line. Rather, progress will often look more like a zig-zag—a bit of a back and forth—as refinements are made along the path to our goals. In this episode, MG shares how his recent goals have gone sideways as well as why and how he's taking it in stride. Even with habits aligned and a clearly envisioned outcome, there are always external forces at play that have the ability to influence, for better or worse, the desired result. When things go sideways, first take inventory of the few (or many) things that went right, then adjust the plan and keep moving forward. Goals are intelligence in action, and failure to achieve a goal reveals helpful information—whether it's the first effort or the 15th. Enjoy the episode! Justin Brown Interview: Ideapod

“The deeper truth is we act from underlying values and hopes and dreams when we become fulfilled human beings..." Today's episode features an in-depth interview with Justin Brown, founder of Ideapod, whose mission is to provide ecosystems of thought around important ideas and to raise provocative questions that aim to inspire personal growth and group-think. Justin grew up in Melbourne and was on the academic fast-track with a Bachelor's in Commerce and a Master's in International Relations. He was then accepted into a paid scholarship program in Europe for another Master's degree, spending time in both Poland and London studying economic history. Then, after three years as a financial consultant, he was accepted to the Ph.D. program for International Political Economy at the University of Warwick, where Ideapod became a side project. Justin's vision was to share important ideas outside of academia, which, to him, appeared to be "trapped in academic silos." Justin quit his doctoral studies and moved to New York City to raise funds and launch Ideapod. While the model has shifted over time, Ideapod flourishes as a personal development platform with a million monthly viewers and 100,000-plus email subscribers. Justin shares the powerful lessons from his challenges along the way and how essential it has become for him to bring his attention and focus back to the "now" and to his habits. Enjoy the episode! Learn more about Justin Brown and Ideapod. Find Justin Brown on Instagram. Justin Brown recommends these transformative books: Man's Search for Meaning, by Viktor Frankl The Courage to Be Disliked, by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. Holly Green Interview: Results from Brain Science

“With any elite player, we see discipline, clarity and focus...specifically, what is the win? Then, there is a persistence, an energy, and a discipline with absolute accountability!" Today's episode features an interview with Holly Green, who uses brain science to coach executives in some of the world's best companies to be more effective. An experienced business leader and behavioral scientist, Holly's superpower is recognizing elite performers' patterns (habits) and then dissecting, translating, and applying them within the corporate arena. Holly has worked with elite performers including the United States Navy SEALs, Top Gun fighter pilots, Olympic athletes, senior NFL referees, the FBI Leadership Academy, and two United States presidents. 2021 New Year Series, Bonus: Execution!

“A good plan, violently executed now is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.” ~George Patton Ideas without execution are just dreams. Thus, our New Year mini-series ends with a few important thoughts about execution. To execute—to finalize ideas—to bring them to life is difficult and requires both consistency and persistence. The beauty is well executed ideas move from the realm of potential energy to kinetic energy. The act of execution actually releases energy and, in return, provides information. To execute anything requires an order of events—a process—that begins with selection. The order looks like this; selection, concentration, focus—consistent focus— habits. The prior episode about resilience was the ideal precursor to this episode on execution. Hopefully, you've completed the entire New Year mini-series and are putting the ideas into action! Enjoy the episode! As part of this New Year mini-series, be sure to identify which habits—three to five habits— you can begin to track and align to your goals to move you more quickly toward your most important goals! 2021 New Year Series: RESILIENCE!

“You really only fail if you fail to learn the lesson." Today's episode continues the New Year mini-series, RESILIENCE! Resilience may be the ultimate superpower! Resilience is the beautiful combination of persistence plus adaptability plus resourcefulness. In short, resilience is GRIT! It's possessing an openness and willingness to consistently grow and adapt. Those who tend to fail lack resilience. They give up. Charles Darwin put it this way, "It's not the strongest nor the smartest of species that survive but the most adaptable to change." Many people think their smarts alone will account for their success only to ultimately realize that they never adapted to their environment or challenges appropriately—they didn't evolve. MG refers to THIS blog post about GRIT and the habits that help to constitute a GRITTY and a resilient character. The key is to recognize any failure as part of a process to strengthen resilience then find ways to channel any challenges to meet desired objectives. So, how resilient are you? As part of this New Year mini-series, be sure to identify which habits—three to five habits— you can begin to program that will move you more quickly to your most important goals for the New Year? 2021 New Year Series: PLANNING!

“Plans are worthless, but planning is everything." ~Dwight D. Eisenhower Today's episode continues the New Year mini-series, PLANNING! What does Eisenhower mean when he says, "Plans are worthless"? Well, in and of themselves, plans don't do anything— it's PEOPLE who put plans into action. Thus, Eisenhower's powerful observation underscores the importance of executing and following through on our plans. Brian Tracy has said that for every one minute of planning we gain 10 minutes in effectiveness and productivity. The reality is it doesn't matter if it's two minutes or one-hundred minutes, the key is to take the time to plan. Make time now to begin planning as it relates to your most important goals for the new year. Have you taken the time to plan yet? Our New Year mini-series has covered a lot of ground: 1) Compiling mini-victories 2) Recognizing that you are the programmer 3) Getting your mental game in order by mitigating doubt and committing to tracking your habits 4) Clarity and now, 5) Planning! Set aside the time to plan the outcomes and the strategies that will help produce the results you are looking for. The planning process is sure to bring immense value as well as add more meaning and direction to your present day activities. As part of your plan, be sure to identify which habits—three to five habits— you can begin to program that will move you more quickly to your most important goals for the New Year? 2021 New Year Series: CLARITY!

“Visualization is the master skill of intent." Today's episode continues the New Year mini-series, CLARITY! If "beginning with the end in mind" works to make for a productive and successful day or week, you can bet it works to make for a productive and successful lifetime. Thus, the homework for each listener is to complete the various clarity exercises MG discusses. Brian Tracy likes to say that "Clarity probably accounts for eighty-percent of success and happiness while lack of clarity is responsible for the majority of frustration and unhappiness." Recognizing that you are an extraordinary achievement machine means that you can, and should, with intention and effort, craft your ideal future and to do so, you must know what that ideal future looks like. Make the time NOW to get clear on your lifetime goals as well as your new year goals. The process is sure to bring immense value as well as add more meaning and direction to your present day activities. And, it will help you to identify the habits you must begin to start crafting right away. 2021 New Year Series: Do Not Pass Go!

“Your doubt about yourself and goal achievement is just a bullsh*t story you've bought into." Today's episode continues our New Year mini-series, DO NOT PASS GO!, which simply means; It makes little sense to consume more info (podcasts, books, etc) and/or waste more energy and time pursing your goals and ideals if you cannot address these two important mindsets/questions in the affirmative: 1) Are you willing to track your habits? 2) Are you willing to suspend your doubts about your ability to achieve your most important goals and to simply trust THIS process? Doubting oneself is a natural phenomena. What's mildly astonishing is once people discover The Habit Factor® AND they realize it is a powerful, valid, helpful and proven method to follow, rather than pursue it, they then begin to doubt themselves. Thus, the important statement in the title of this episode: DO NOT PASS GO! Can you suspend your skepticism, doubt and forget your past failures? Can you commit to tracking your habits, first for 28 days and than for as long as it takes to reach your goal? Great! Now, identify which habits—three to five habits— you can begin to program that will move you more quickly to your most important goals for the New Year? 2021 New Year Series: You are the Programmer

“There is an expiration date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you." ~J. K. Rowling Today's episode continues our New Year series with Responsibility, which simply means; YOU are the programmer. Humans are remarkable achievement machines capable of extraordinary results but only when the correct program is crafted (coded). To acquire new habits and skills, to forge an improved character, to become something different, we must write the program. Nobody else is going to write our program. The responsibility lies with us. The program we write, the habits we create is what creates the life we ultimately live. For many, their habits are crafted by default rather than by design. Others, who understand that The Habit Factor®—the force of habit— is always at work, intentionally craft the habits that will serve their ideals and goals. They program the code (habits) with intention, practice and deliberation. All great computer programs are the result of code that evolves and adapts over time. Our lives are no different, so the habits we program should evolve and adapt over time as well. Identify which habits—three to five habits— you can begin to program that will move you more quickly to your most important goals for the New Year? 2021 New Year Series: Mini-Victories

“Every great success is the culmination of a thousand tiny victories nobody ever notices or appreciates."~ Brian Tracy Nobody wins a game of chess in one move. Any victory in war is the result of several battles won. If your goal is to sail around the world, the attainment of that goal will involve many smaller wins/milestones along the way. As we prepare to kick off the 2021 New Year and identify our big goal, it's just as important—perhaps more important—to identify the small wins, the mini victories, along the way. This is precisely the philosophy and strategy that The Habit Factor® has taught from day one. By identifying the habits that will carry you toward your big goal, and attaining those daily "victories," the chances for your overall success increases dramatically. The homework for this episode, for new listeners especially, is to identify the habits that, when performed on your target days, will provide those mini-victories. These not only promote your confidence; they compile into tremendous momentum over time. So, which habits—three to five habits—can you begin to track that will move you more quickly to your most important goals for the New Year? “Habit is either the best of servants or the worst of masters.” ~Nathanael Emmons One Saturday, driving to the office before a Habit Factor Group Challenge event, MG records this quick episode to underscore what seems to elude so many of us: that habit should be used as a tool, one that is consciously constructed, with practice, (following P.A.R.R.) to serve us unconsciously. This is what is meant by holistic thinking, rather than, "I don't believe in habit," as one "guru" put it to Martin, adding, "I only believe in mindfulness." That is both a noble and silly proposition. Habit isn't something one "believes" in. Habit isn't going anywhere, just like the moon isn't going anywhere. Thus, thinking holistically, one can intentionally cultivate the habits that will serve them unconsciously. So, what habits are you making your servants? Enjoy the episode! Near-Death

"Unfortunately, we're all not going to be lucky enough to have a near-death experience." During a recent interview (which has yet to air) for another habit-related podcast, host Brian Conroy said something interesting: "You know, I don't mean to sound skeptical, but these other authors, what's interesting...is they've all had near-death experiences." While the interviewer's point was not lost, the message had a more meaningful application, thus MG's answer above. Since near-death experiences force us to ask the tough questions, the realization is that we should ALL be "lucky" enough to encounter them. However, this isn't likely to happen any time soon for most of us, so we'll have to do the next best thing: Use our creative imaginations and pretend we have almost died! Near death experiences lead us to ask reflective questions, such as, What has my life meant? What have I shared/given? What have I learned? What have I achieved and experienced in this life? Perhaps even better, "If we were to die tomorrow, what would I most regret NOT achieving, learning, or experiencing?" If beginning with the end in mind is important with a project or even weekly productivity, you can rest assured that beginning with the ultimate end, your demise, is even more important and valuable. It was Socrates who suggested that, "The unexamined life is not worth living." So, how are you examining your life? Chances are, it would help you immensely to put the present in order and give it greater value by imagining a near-death experience to draw out some important answers about how you'd like to live your life going forward. How Long Should I Track My Habits?

Q: How long should I be tracking my habits? A: How long do you plan on living? After a recent presentation to an entrepreneur group, the question came up, "How long should I be tracking my habits?" MG's response, "How long do you plan on living?" Coming on the heels of recent episodes, "Habit Tracking is for Humans" and "What are the Most Important Habits?" the realization is this; we should track the habits that help us achieve our most important goals, for the majority of our life. Taking a page right out of Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, who, after nearly sixty years of tracking his habits (virtues), said of the practice, "though I never arrived at the perfection I desired... I was a better and happier man for the effort." Then, Ben concluded, "I hope, therefore, that my descendants shall follow the example (habit tracking) and reap the benefit." While tracking habits for the rest of your life may seem extreme, at first, it's efficacy has been proven time and again and has a profound effect not just on one's character but on their productivity and achievements. Further, as reviewed in a recent episode, some of the most-cited habit studies for humans—for instance, the European Journal of Social Psychology, utilized habit tracking with their participants. Unlike other creatures, we (humans) have the ability to craft, at will, any habit and skill we desire with PRACTICE. TRACKING REAFFIRMS PRACTICE AND PRACTICE REAFFIRMS DESIRE. Start habit tracking now keep on trackin'! Be like Ben! Enjoy the episode! How are you going to improve your results in 2021? Habit Tracking is for Humans

"When it comes to habit development, humans can, and should, leverage their innate capacities of choice, intention and reflection." Today's Mind-Bullet is about why habit tracking is beneficial. AGAIN. After being interviewed for a habit-specific podcast recently, the host was left a bit befuddled as MG challenged much of what the host was told were "best practices" around habit development. At one point, the host mentioned that a habit expert and behavioral scientist had insisted that habit tracking was not a requirement or even a recommended practice, and that habit-tracking apps didn't work. The truth is, people do not need to track habits in order to develop them. Unfortunately, people forge habits all the time unintentionally, and regrettably, they are habits that do not serve their goals. It's worth considering that if habit-tracking apps didn't work so well, why would there be so many of them? And, nearly all of them have entered the app marketplace after The Habit Factor was introduced more than a decade ago. Further, some of the most-cited habit studies—for instance, the European Journal of Social Psychology, which concluded that on average, habit development takes 66 days—utilized habit tracking with their participants. Another terrific example of habit tracking can be traced all the way back to our great founding father, Benjamin Franklin. Ben intuitively recognized that in order to cultivate the 13 virtues he desired to possess as an older man, he needed to track them. Benjamin Franklin then devised a strategy to track one habit (virtue) a week for 13 weeks, and rotate through his list of 13, four times a year. So, you may be wondering, "How did that work out for Ben?" Well, as he remarked in his autobiography, it (habit tracking) may have added the greatest value to his life, and that, "he was a better person for the effort." Further, he encouraged his readers to follow his habit-tracking example, saying, "I hope therefore that my descendants will follow the example and reap the benefit." That's right! Benjamin Franklin wants you to track your habits! If you're thinking, "Ben didn't track habits, he tracked virtues," you need only understand that habit is the means—a pathway—to virtue, according to Aristotle, that is. So, when it comes to intentional habit development, put your unique human capacities of choice, intention and reflection to work and follow the P.A.R.R. method of habit development. Be like Ben! Simplicity

"If you can't explain it simply, you do not understand it." ~Einstein Today's Mind-Bullet investigates the significance of simplicity and its application in life. It's been said that simplicity is a symbol of sophistication and elegance, and many great thinkers have touted its importance. Consider Apple products and their legendary simplicity in design and use. Steve Jobs lauded simplicity many times, saying, "Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple." Allegedly, Leonardo Da Vinci said something similar: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Even if he didn't say it, it's tough to argue. Einstein reportedly echoed the sentiment, saying, "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." The message and theme is consistent and applicable to all aspects of our lives. In particular, we should strive for simplicity in thought—clarity—when setting goals and objectives. Success becomes easier with clarity, and clarity becomes easier with simplicity. "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Our objectives and goals become easier to achieve when we strip away the complex and redefine them with simplicity. Enjoy the episode! How are you going to improve your results in 2021? Visit: https://thehabitfactor.com/challenge Today's Mind-Bullet investigates the significance of questions. Arguably, a person's level of "success" may come down to the quality of the questions they ask themselves during their lifetime. For instance, everyone may say they want to be a "success," but how many take the time to define exactly what success means to them by asking themselves some hard, revealing questions? It's hard to hit a target you can't see. Questions direct our attention and our focus, as well as our emotions. When we put our attention and intention toward solving the problems that matter most in our life, we change our life's direction. Our ability to solve the toughest problems we face is in direct proportion to the quality of the questions we ask. Questions—great questions and their answers—produce value. Just ask GOOGLE. Visit: https://thehabitfactor.com/challenge Today's Mind-Bullet investigates the requirements for a creative life! Since life tends to be a mass of problems, one after the other, it's essential to view creativity as problem solving in action. To be creative, one needs ample time and space, to both wander and wonder. Creativity, as we reviewed in a prior episode also requires an "empty" mind which provides the space necessary to receive and conceive of new ideas. Further, creativity demands energy! "When you devote time to your energy, your energy returns to you time." Thus, creativity is essential to a life well-lived and a requirement to create one's "success". TEXT MG direct your toughest #habits and #goals questions now: 619-547-1915 Extraordinary Adj: Very unusual or remarkable. Today's MBM sheds light on the idea that "different," "unusual," and "remarkable" not only define an extraordinary life, but also create the path to an extraordinary life. If you want to lead a life that is extraordinary, the only way possible is to do things differently. To be unusual. MG shares that when he added the above quote to the Habit Factor app, he wasn't entirely clear about the meaning of "extraordinary effort." Now, its core idea— it's theme—is crystal clear. For us to experience extraordinary results in our life, we must zig when other zag. We can't stay with the crowd and stand out from the crowd at the same time. To be remarkable suggests differentiation, NOT necessarily just working harder. Review your results to determine if your life is on an ordinary or extraordinary path. Then, inventory your efforts to figure out where, when, and how you can change them—differentiate them—to achieve extraordinary results. Enjoy the episode!
