S652: Practice
"Practice!? You talking about Practice!?” ~Allen Iverson In today's MBM, yes, we're talking about PRACTICE! Practice, the art of strengthening a habit or skill is in itself, an overlooked skill. The question for you is, "What are you practicing today?" Practice precedes results in all areas of our lives. The more often and better we practice with intention, the better our results. The problem is so many people think of "practice" as something that applies only to professional athletes. What could you begin to practice today to improve the results in those areas that are important to you? A few examples of skills/habits to practice; saving money, breathing, stretching, drinking water, exercising, just to name a few. The beauty for long-time habit factor users is the process to improve one's practice habit follows the very same principles within P.A.R.R.; Plan, Act, Record & Reassess! Listen in to hear more about the significance of incorporating a mindset of daily practice to produce the results you want! Enjoy the episode! S651: How can I stop worrying?
"Worrying is like paying interest on a loan that may never come due." Today's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF) attempts to grapple the all-to-common problem over chronic worrying. It makes sense to worry, right? Pick your topic; government, climate, work, the economy, family, friends, etc. The list of valid things to worry about is endless. The reality though is worrying about things we can't control or influence is a waste of precious time and valuable energy. Further, it's bad for one's health. Too much worrying and we'll head to an early grave. Rephrasing a classic Plato quote MG offers this: "There are two things you should never worry about, those things you can help and those things you cannot help." Finally, MG suggests a simple hack to thwart the worry habit for good by using each worry thought as a trigger to develop the gratitude habit! S650: 2020 Vision & Wellness, #3
"The wave of change is coming. It's time to get on your 'New Habits' surfboard and surf with intention.” With the New Year comes a great opportunity to leverage the air of change and harness the force of habit for our benefit. This five-part Vision & Wellness series is designed to help you do just that! Today's episode, Part 4, is all about the great constant of CHANGE! Some of us hate change, and some of us never think things will change, yet the truth is everything is undergoing constant transformation. Take a look at a picture of yourself when you were just 10 years old. Is that really you? For many, such a reminder provides hope: The past doesn't determine the future, but the new habits and goals we set today (now) can. Today's exercises ask us to reflect upon our strengths and weaknesses and identify where we can put our attention and intention to forge new habits. Make sure you're subscribed as we get into part four of this powerful series to help you jump-start your 2020 to be your best year ever! S649: Obsessed
"You become what you think about all day long.” ~RW Emerson Where your attention goes, new habits and skills are developed. Obsession, by definition, is "an idea or thought that constantly preoccupies one's mind." Obsession is arguably your greatest ally when it comes to goal achievement, as well as skill and habit development. Obsession is simply Desire 10.0. The question for you is, "What are you obsessed with?" What preoccupies your mind? When your desire for "IT" is so great that you wake up with "it" first thing, and it's the last thing you think of before you go to bed, then you will know your desire is sufficient. MG uses the example of writing both The Habit Factor® and The Pressure Paradox™. Each was years in the making, and during those years, MG was obsessed with these ideas — the concepts of HABIT and PRESSURE. Further, that obsession, he suggests, is what helps to inspire creativity via the subconscious mind! Listen in to hear the other four, key steps in the process of making feeling overwhelmed a thing of the past. Enjoy the episode! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S648: How can habits help me achieve my goals?
"A wise man rules his habits, a fool obeys them." Today's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF) poses a classic question: "How can habits help me achieve my goals?" This may be one of the most basic and fundamental concepts of the entire Habit Factor® ecosystem. First, the subject of habit is often confusing. Most people, sadly, only associate the word habit with negative actions, such as smoking, drinking, biting fingernails, doing drugs, etc. But habits are a force of energy and an incredibly efficient way to apply your behavior energy to help you move forward toward your goals more quickly and easily. The Habit Factor teaches us to identify, craft, and implement habits that are essential to our goals. An author develops the habit of writing; a runner develops the habit of running. Someone on a health and fitness quest would craft habits of exercise, eating well, drinking water, etc. Listen in for more on aligning habits to your goals, how following P.A.R.R. increases habitstrength incrementally over time, and how you can reduce overthinking and better manage your thoughts to direct your energy in a positive direction. Enjoy the episode! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S647: 2020 Vision & Wellness, #2
"The Habit Factor is always, always working! The question is, is it working for you or against you?” With the New Year comes this five-part series to be released each Wednesday in January: 2020 Vision & Wellness. Today's episode helps us to step back, assess our current results, and then ask a few key questions with the understanding that what we've done in the past has led us to the present. Thus, the new habits that we begin to cultivate today will lead us to be better tomorrow! This week's exercises build upon the clarity developed in the last episode. If you haven't listened to last week's episode on clarity and done that homework, stop, and go listen to that episode first. These episodes are designed to be consumed in chronological order. Today's exercises have us reflect upon the past, assess our current results, and ask some simple yet powerful questions: "What's working?" "What's not working?" "What habits should I begin to develop?" "What habits should I quit?" And, finally, "What should I be doing more of/less of?" S646: Overwhelm
"The man who moves mountains begins by carrying small stones.” ~Confucius Overwhelm by definition is to "bury or drown by a large mass". This is a topic we covered in Season 3, episode 10 when Martin invited Cathey Fisher to join H2G to share her experience with The Habit Factor and discuss the topic of being overwhelmed. Cathey and Martin review the Focus & Discipline webinar where the topic came up in the Q&A. In this episode, MG dishes out a five-part recipe regarding exactly how to address the feeling of overwhelm which begins with getting crystal clear on identifying the PRIORITY— what to address first. Loosely defined, a priority is one thing of great importance above all others. Listen in to hear the other four, key steps in the process to make feeling overwhelmed a thing of the past. S645: How Can I Stop Overthinking?
"A miracle is an event so unlikely as to be nearly impossible. It's probably worth reminding you right now that the probability of your existence is estimated to be 1 in 400 trillion." Today's Frequently Asked Friday (FAF), "How can I stop overthinking?" is the natural follow-up to Monday's Mind-Bullet, Overthinking. When it comes to our goals and ambitions, chances are good that overthinking is keeping us from even getting out of the gate! Overthinking is typically just a disguise for a lack of confidence. The key to gaining confidence is to take action! Small steps toward your goal—tracking your habits, for example—following P.A.R.R. is a sure way to gain confidence. We can also stop overthinking by asking questions and challenging our perspective. One of the best ways to reduce overthinking is to slow down, stop, and manage our thoughts better. One of the very best ways to do this is to begin a meditation practice. Listen in for more on why overthinking need not be a hurdle you create for yourself and learn more techniques to diminish its negative presence in your life. S644: 2020 Vision & Wellness, #1
"Don't die with your music still in you.” ~Dr. Wayne Dyer With the New Year comes a five-part series to be released each Wednesday in January: 2020 Vision & Wellness. Today's episode helps us to get clear about our goals and ambitions for the new year. We "begin with the end in mind", by identifying what we want to create in 2020 and beyond. To do this we review several vision and clarity exercises and Stephen Covey's, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People to underscore the importance of clarity. MG shares the experience that was responsible for him to take action toward his most important goal (after wasting so many years) claims the same exercises are responsible for the creation of the book, app and podcast. Finally, with the theme of wellness, he urges listeners to consider challenging themselves physically in the new year which is likely to help them grow mentally and emotionally as well. Listen to the first part of the series and find out how you can propel yourself to get a great jumpstart into the new year! S643: Overthinking
"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” ~Martin Luther King Jr. Overthinking is often the biggest hurdle most of us encounter on the path to goal achievement. The irony; it's a hurdle we create! Overthinking not only creates stress in our lives, it creates inaction, increases doubt, anxiety, fear and limits our potential. Overthinking impedes the very 3 P's MG writes about in The Pressure Paradox, namely; Productivity, Performance and Peace of Mind. To illustrate the point, he shares a recent Conan O'Brien interview with NPR's Terry Gross. S642: Are There Accidents?
"There are no accidents Shifu." ~Oogway Deepak Chopra likes to say, "There are no accidents . . . there is only some purpose we haven't yet understood. Einstein said, "God does not play dice with the universe." Even the wisdom of the movie Kung Fu Panda asserts that everything happens for a reason. But this line of thought leads us down a path of dichotomous thinking. Are there really NO accidents? There are entire industries devoted to accidents. Rather than believing everything is predetermined or destined to be, it is worth considering that it doesn't have to be an either/or situation. Consider sports and the games we play. There are rules AND there is random chance. In life we have rules; gravity, principles — things that are unwavering AND we also have the element of chance. We need not explain away accidents and simply assert they are all predetermined. Listen in for more on accepting both rules and accidents, why life is like a board game.. S640: Attitude
"It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude.” ~Zig Ziglar Today's Mind Bullet focuses on a topic of great importance in many Habits2Goals episodes, but it's time to look at it in-depth, by itself: attitude. Attitude is defined as a "settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person's behavior." Attitudes are ingrained habits of thought that are reflected in our behavior. We have attitudes about everything —friends, jobs, learning, work, spouses, families, and more. Are these attitudes fostering positivity or negativity? The good news is that our thoughts control our attitudes—and we can control our thinking. Listen in for more on using attitude to grow skills, how controlling your thoughts drive a positive attitude, and why the ceiling on our achievement and success is limited only by your attitude. "The best doctors in the world are Doctor Diet, Doctor Quiet, and Doctor Merryman." ~Jonathan Swift Today's Frequently Asked Friday tackles an important question: What are the habits that make the biggest difference in life? When thinking about the habits that have the biggest ROI, focus on the four, core quadrants of well-being: Mind, Body, Social, and Spiritual. Mind habits include meditation, reading, thinking, etc. Body habits examples include drinking water, eating healthy, and exercise. S638: How to Handle Pressure
"Without the luxury of planning, preparing and practicing, pressure can be the enemy of success. " Henry J. Evans joins Habits2Goals this week for an insightful discussion of a multi-faceted topic: how to deal with pressure. No one gets out of dealing with pressure. We all experience pressure, whether it's related to family, relationships, health, job, or finances. It starts early and never lets up; there's no escaping pressure. Some "experts" say pressure is the enemy of success. Yet great success comes from facing down pressure and coming out ahead. Like habit, pressure is neither good nor bad. It's a force that you can make work for you or let work against you. Growth doesn't happen in your comfort zone. It comes from pressure, challenges, and deadlines. Listen in to learn the formula for dealing with pressure and maintaining balance, understanding the three P's of handling pressure, and why habit is a critical tool for turning pressure into growth. S637: Start Clapping!
"Feast upon uncertainty. Fatten upon disappointment. Enthuse over apparent defeat, and invigorate in the presence of difficulties.” Today's Mind Bullet is about setting a new mindset: Start clapping! When misfortune hits, we tend to think in extremes. Didn't get the job? I'll be homeless in three weeks! It's easy to spin out into the worst scenario. But there's an infinite spectrum of possibilities, and staying optimistic is a great tool to steady yourself in the face of adversity to recalibrate your course. The great NFL coach Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks is in a near-constant state of clapping during the game. Seahawks missed a field goal? He claps. They fumble. He claps. The other team scores a touchdown? He claps. He's constantly showing his team that they're fine, there's plenty of time, and it's not panic time. This mindset goes beyond football into all aspects of life. Didn't get the job? It's OK, start clapping. Things not turning out as you expected? There's still time; it's not over yet. You're still in the game. Start clapping. There's time to fix this, and misfortune can be a great opportunity. Listen in to learn how to keep your vision intact when misfortune occurs, how to recalibrate when things aren't going your way, and help yourself not to stumble as you get back on your path to victory. S636: How To Coach Kids?
"When coaching kids, above all, be kind, and focus on giving them constructive, positive labels about themselves." Today's Frequently Asked Friday seems to come out of left field, but it has deep implications: How do you coach kids? How to coach kids is a frequent Google search, so plenty of people are wondering about the best way to coach, teach, and guide the children in our lives. The simple answer is to be kind. Tell them the good things you see in them and their potential. Kids' mindsets are just beginning to form and the labels about themselves are becoming fastened. Adults are often unaware of the effects—both positive and negative—their words can have over the long term. What will they remember from their interaction with you in say 20 years? Listen in for more tips on the importance of kindness when interacting with kids in a coaching or teaching capacity; why emphasizing development, potential, and fun is critical; and how to have the kids in our care come away with positive labels. S635: The Four Phases of Learning
"Are you willing to jump through the painful practice 'hoop' of conscious competence to truly become your best?" Henry J. Evans joins Habits2Goals this week to discuss an important topic in every aspect of life, including habit development: the four phases of learning. To recap, the phases are: Unconscious incompetence. (You don't know what you don't know. ) Conscious incompetence. (You know you're bad.) Conscious competence. (You know you're kind of good, but it's painful and it hurts; think practice.) Unconscious competence. (You're automatic, thanks to thousands upon thousands of hours. "In the zone.") Since learning skills and developing habits are closely tied, these same phases of learning apply to habit development and goal achievement. It takes a process of awareness, consciousness, practice, and effort to create an automatic positive habit that can help you reach your goals. Listen in to hear more why there's no getting around the hours of effort and hard work it takes to reach unconscious competence, and how the PARR method for habit development: Plan, Act, Record & Reasses builds habit strength, a requirement for both habit and skill development. S634: Resistance
"Procrastination is the most common manifestation of resistance because it's the easiest to rationalize.” ~Steven Pressfield Today's Mind Bullet builds off last week's powerful episode, E-Brake, which explored the idea that our personal emergency brakes are holding us back from true success. Today we explore more about resistance and its profound effect on our goals. We often think our biggest problem is not finishing things we start. While this is often true, you can't overstate the importance of starting—overcoming that initial resistance and moving toward a goal. Resistance is all around us. Psychological and physical barriers are plentiful. Psychological resistance visits us in the form of overthinking, finding a billion reasons not to start on a goal. There are real physical barriers to starting a goal, as well. In our interview with Fred Gratzon, author of The Lazy Way to Success, we learned about the "principle of least action." Everything trends toward not moving—a body not in motion tends to stay not in motion. Listen in to learn how to overcome the physical and psychological resistance we face when starting a goal, getting back on track when we falter, and how to stop feeding the ready excuses that fuel inaction. S633: What's the Best Way to Start the Day?
"Invest the first hour of the day, the 'Golden hour,' in yourself." ~Brian Tracy On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the question: What is the best way to start the day? While everyone has their preferences, there are a few helpful habits everyone can benefit from. First, the prep for a great day tomorrow starts today. Set up your success for tomorrow with your choices today. Some swear by getting up early, but this depends on your own situation. But leave yourself at least an hour before you have to get going. That extra quiet time gets you organized, giving you time to prioritize your tasks and fit in those healthy morning habits. Listen in for more tips on the best way to start your day, how gratitude comes into play, and how setting the tone for the rest of your day pays dividends in productivity and peace. S631: Find Your E-Brake
"When your personal emergency brake is on, you're not going to go as fast, as far, or as efficiently as you should.” On today's episode, we greet the week with a powerful Mind Bullett: Find your e-brake. If the emergency brake is on when you drive your car, the vehicle will feel slow and sluggish, held back by some unseen force. When you realize it's the emergency brake and release it, your car surges forward at full power. This is a great metaphor for when you're trying to make a change in your life and move forward in the right direction. Sometimes you have your goal in mind and you're working to align your habits with that goal, but something is out of whack—something is out of alignment and holding you back. When your personal emergency brake is on, you're not going to go as fast, as far, or as efficiently as you could. You can be doing so many things right, but one bad habit could be stuck in the process and stalling your progress. Maybe it's drinking too much, or smoking, or holding on to anger. Whatever it is, it's time to release it. Listen in for a checkup on your habit alignment process, finding your own personal e-brake that's keeping you from your full potential, and how to release that bad habit and feel the power as you surge forward. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S630: How to Kill Doubt
"Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will." ~Suzy Kassem "Life is risky! As soon as you were born things got risky. Just how risky? Nobody gets out alive." ~Jim Rohn On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the question: How can I kill my doubt? Leading with Suzy's brilliant observation above, MG reminds us that failure is really a prerequisite for success and since that is the case, it's doubt that proves to be the real enemy! Since doubt is rooted in fear and often related to past experiences, step one is to recognize that the past doesn't equal the future. Step two is to change the picture (what we're associating and visualizing) to be more positive. Step three is to take ACTION since doubt creates inaction! S628: Upstream
"When you find an upstream solution to the problems in your life, you change the downstream effects.” Today's Mind Bullet is a powerful concept: Upstream. In relation to problem-solving, "going upstream" means addressing the issue at its root cause, rather than just treating the ensuing symptoms. For example, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America goes upstream with the problem of incarcerated youth by providing kids with mentors early on to guide them. This comes at a fraction of the cost of prison. Diet and exercise are upstream solutions to health problems. Upstream ways to reduce plastic waste, such as making straws optional and using reusable grocery bags, are making a huge impact on the environment. What are some upstream solutions for your own life? If the downstream issue is a lack of savings, an upstream solution is checking your spending and saving. If your downstream issue is poor health, an upstream solution can be to change your diet or checking your alcohol intake. Listen in to hear about finding the upstream solution to your personal and community challenges, and how habit and PARR come into play. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. "If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape one hundred days of sorrow." ~Chinese Proverb On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the question: How can I kill my negative emotions? Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering. There's no winning with emotions such as hate, anger, jealousy, and fear. (Although as we learned in Season 3's episode, The Value of Negative Emotions, there is a useful place for some of these feelings.) When negative emotions infiltrate your mind, how can you change gears? Creating space and changing your environment—getting out of your own head—is key. When you take a moment to make a good choice, growth and freedom can come as a result. Listen in for more on tips and techniques to deal with negative emotions, releasing and moving on before you're swallowed by negative emotions, and developing the habit of eliminating these emotions by substituting them with positive emotions. "When you quiet the mind and think about developing a product, you realize there has to be a big idea behind the niche space you're targeting.” ~Mark Schmid Habits2Goals is proud to present a conversation with inventor, entrepreneur, and leader Mark Schmid, aka "Schmiddy." S625: The Future
"No tomorrow. No today. No yesterday." ~Sheng-ts "Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water.” ~Zen Proverb Today's Mind Bullet Monday takes us back...to the future. This subject matter is pulled directly from The Habit Factor®. Martin reads from the Epilogue sharing the story about the time his daughter, Eva (7), asked her mom, "When is the future created?" She then shared the question with Martin, who was left puzzled as though it were a Zen Koan. Ultimately, he shared the question on Facebook to which a friend responded, "Tomorrow! Tell Eva that the future is created tomorrow!" Gleaning insight shared by a great Zen master thousands of years ago, Martin realized the real answer. The true beauty, though, of the answer lies in the realization that it is our habits—NOW—regardless of our past, that plant the seeds of our future. With this realization we can and should use the NOW to forge the habits that will lead us to our ideal future. S624: What's the Best Way to Learn?
"When the student is ready, the master appears." ~Buddha "Action is the real measure of intelligence.” ~Napoleon Hill On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the question: What's the Best Way to Learn? This topic harkens back to Season 3's Learning Mastery, which explored the idea that our minds are more ripe at certain times, so continually studying a subject will yield new insights. Today we explore whether it's better to learn something by studying or doing. In most cases, doing—gaining the experience—will teach you more than any book, podcast, or conference ever could. Sometimes we're hesitant to take action because we want everything to be just right. We want to have all the answers before we take a risk. But this robs us of the great learning experiences we gain by diving right it. Doing begets learning; learning comes from experience. Two key learning criteria to keep in mind are curiosity and pain (Check out this article on Fast Company.) We all understand why curiosity is important; it's a desire to learn. But pain is a great teacher. Think of all the lessons you've learned in life, and you'll see how pain was involved. (Read about the Feynman Technique model for learning.) Listen in for more on how knowledge comes from experience, how pain is part of the process, and why diving in and taking action yields the best results. S622: Yes and No
"The key to a healthy 'no' is to remember the 'yes' that the 'no' is making space for.” Alan Cohen Today's Mind Bullet, Yes and No, is inspired by online "wisdom" that says the key to success is learning to say no . . . or yes. Billionaire Warren Buffet is quoted as saying that the key to his success is saying no, because saying no creates focus and helps you set priorities. Richard Branson, on the other hand, attributes his success to saying yes to everything, because saying yes means you're learning and growing. So which is it? Yes or no? Don't fall into the trap of dichotomous thinking. It's not about always saying yes or always saying no. It's about knowing when to say yes and when to say no. Listen in to hear more about the dangers of dichotomous thinking, using your intuition to figure out when to say yes or no, and why there is a place for binary thinking, especially when it comes to tracking habits. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S621: What Expectations Should I Set for Myself?
"My expectations were reduced to zero when I was 21. Everything since then has been a bonus.”~Stephen Hawking On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the question: What expectations should I set for myself? The topic of expectations builds on a couple of previous episodes. In season four, we addressed the idea of standards, and how raising your own standards—demanding more of yourself—can dramatically improve your life. Just last week, we discussed creating a personal culture for yourself based on values. Our culture episode touched on the culture created by the New England Patriots, where a sign includes the tenet: Manage Expectations. This goes against popular belief. We're often taught to set high expectations and live up to them, but in reality, high expectations can be self-defeating and self-deflating. Managing expectations, however, is key. Sometimes expectations should be high; sometimes it's best to set them low and understand the outcome is out of your control. Sometimes, with no expectations, you're free to live in the moment, detach from the outcome, and excel. Listen in for more on the importance of managing expectations, when to set expectations high or low, and when it's time to let them go. S619: Culture
"Shaping your own personal culture means identifying your values and crafting an environment that is aligned to those values." This Monday brings a massive mind bullet that brings up a new topic for Habits2Goals: culture. This mind bullet was inspired by a Monday Night Football broadcast where the New England Patriots destroyed the New York Jets. The game was so boring the announcers had to fill the time with a history of the Patriots' greatness and how the team's culture played a huge role. Values and culture are interwoven; business leaders who get this tend to have amazing organizations, and the Patriots are a great example. Their culture is articulated at the very entrance of the players' locker room on a sign that reads: Do Your Job Team First Work Hard Be Attentive Upon exit, another sign reads: Don't Believe the Hype Speak for Yourself Ignore the Noise Manage Expectations This is a great reminder to take a few minutes to articulate your values, which guide your thinking, affect your behavior, and craft an environment that helps define your personal culture. S618: Knowledge vs. Wisdom
"Knowledge is knowing tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it into a fruit salad.” ~Miles Kington On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the age-old question: What's the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Earlier this season we tackled wisdom as a standalone topic. This time, though, a LinkedIn post inspires Martin to revisit the question and review some of the common myths and misunderstandings. A key distinction is that wisdom—much like principles—does not waiver. The wisdom of thousands of years ago is as true today as it was then. Knowledge, on the other hand, is not static; it changes from one day to the next. Eggs are bad for you, then they are good for you. There were nine planets in our solar system, now there are eight. Knowledge is backward-looking and evolves over time. In fact, understanding that knowledge is backward-looking inspired one of the most knowledgeable people ever, Albert Einstein, to proclaim, "imagination is more important than knowledge." Listen in to learn more about the important distinctions between knowledge and wisdom, and which, after all is said and done, is most important to our well being. S617: Goal-Setting 201
"If Artificial Intelligence (AI) is goal-directed behavior, then setting meaningful and worthwhile goals is a true sign of real intelligence." Henry J. Evans joins Habits2Goals to pick up where last week's episode, Goal-Setting 101, left off, continuing our discussion of the massive topic of goal-setting. Last week we discussed the what, why, and how of goal-setting, among other things learning why SMART goals aren't smart, how to become the best version yourself that you can imagine, how to stay motivated, and how habits and tracking are game-changers when you're creating your own vision of yourself. This week, we look at the importance of setting goals, managing the inevitable setbacks that come with goal setting, how accountability plays a role, and why tracking habits is the magic secret sauce in goal achievement. Listen in to hear more on why goal-directed behavior is the very definition of intelligence, why goals are mostly about your capacity to set the goal and go after it, how tracking is key, and much more. S616: Shut Up!
"If everything is energy—and it is—what do you think happens when you flap your gums?" Today's Mind Bullet is a bit brutal but necessary: Shut Your Freaking Mouth! In other words, silence. We talked about this idea in a blog post called "Shut Your Pie Hole," discussing oversharing as a personal development hurdle, and it is eloquently explained in this TED Talk: Derek Sivers, Keep Your Goals to Yourself. This MBM was sparked by a Facebook post by someone who continually complains. When good things happen, such as finally getting a new job, there's yet more griping and rambling about downsides, even on day one. Their story is on repeat; it's habitual complaining. Where's the gratitude? Where's the personal responsibility? So shut up! It's not just about constant complainers. We lose focus and dissipate our energy every time we mindlessly overshare, especially when it comes to goals. Sometimes it seems like everyone needs to tweet or express publicly whatever sound bite is in their head. Keeping quiet and storing this energy is more powerful and even helps to generate creativity. Listen in to hear more about collecting and processing your thoughts rather than spewing them, how your thoughts can become potential or kinetic energy, and the power of storing information to fuel creativity. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S615: Where Can I Find Hope?
"Where there is hope in the future, there is happiness in the present.” On this Frequently Asked Friday, we tackle the question: Where can I find hope? In our recent How Can I Stay Motivated? episode, we discussed failure as a stepping stone to success, not the opposite of success. In fact, the opposite of success might be hopelessness, because, without hope, there's no opportunity to create our ideal future. Temporary feelings of hopelessness and sadness are normal, but persistent hopelessness is dangerous. Hope means there's opportunity in the future, and since no one knows what the future truly holds, we are free to use hope to craft and believe in a better future. While creating a great future takes vision, goals, faith, and belief, it all begins with an understanding of hope. Where there is hope in the future, there is happiness in the present. Listen in for more on holding onto hope; using a hopeful future to drive today's happiness; and how to manufacture hope through goals, heroes, and even books. S614: Goal Setting 101
"Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.” ~Earl Nightingale Today's episode brings back legendary former co-host Henry J. Evans—a dynamic marketing expert, best-selling author, speaker, and consultant—for an important introduction to goal-setting. Habits2Goals exists to help listeners learn to set and achieve goals, supported by habits, and live life to their full potential. But it's important to take it back to the beginning for a refresher on just HOW to set goals in the first place—and why it's so critical. Goals can be as broad as your overall life purpose or as minute as what you're doing right now, today, and setting goals requires an understanding of your own values. The first step, as MG calls it, is "beginning with the end in mind." Project yourself 5, 10, 20 years down the road. Who is that person? What habits do they have? Are you proud to be this person? What do you want to be like and how do you want to be? Then you can go about building that person from the ground up. Next comes finding your WHY—tapping into that burning desire for your goal's fulfillment. When you tie your goal to your biggest desire—your why—you can find the strength to power through when the inevitable obstacles occur. Without enough desire or a big enough why, any excuse is enough to quit. Listen in to hear the rest of the Goal-Setting 101 steps and learn why SMART goals aren't' smart, how to become the best version yourself that you can imagine, how to stay motivated, and how habits and tracking are game-changers when you're creating your own vision of yourself. S613: Belonging
"I long, as does every human being, to be at home wherever I find myself." Maya Angelou Today's Mind Bullet once again digs into the root of a word to find more understanding. This time, we look at the word belonging. A Facebook post is the genesis of this episode. A friend shared a post on a military veteran's experience of belonging and how finding that sense of belonging post-service was a difficult search. The first definition of "belong" is to possess something. The second is to be a member or part of a particular group. Think about that first definition when you find yourself searching for that sense of belonging. Perhaps that journey should start inside and become something you possess rather than something you seek. Listen in to hear more about the idea of belonging, possessing an internal sense of belonging before trying to find it outside, and how belonging, just like everything else, begins with you. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S612: What Are the Keys to Happiness?
"There is no way to happiness; happiness is the way.” ~Buddha On this Frequently Asked Friday we tackle the massive idea of happiness once again. In season 4 we addressed the topic "How Can I Be Happy?" toward people fighting through depression and sadness. Today, however, we explore the question, "What Are the Keys to Happiness?" A paradigm-shifting concept is simply to choose happiness. The idea of happiness as a choice goes back thousands of years, and yet too many of us expect perfect circumstances to bring us happiness. To achieve happiness, your basic circumstantial needs (food, shelter) must be met. Taking care of our bodies is vital, as our energy relies on health and wellness. Optimizing your environment influences your happiness. Surround yourself with positivity to set yourself up for success at choosing happiness. Importantly, goal achievement via habit tracking—along with the right mindset—is a critical element of happiness. Listen in for more on about making happiness a choice, setting yourself up for happiness by controlling your environment, and how gratitude is necessary to create and cultivate the happiness habit. S611: Paul Reynolds
"Put yourself in the shoes of others and make it part of your core values; it's the basis of customer-centered ideology.” ~Paul Reynolds This week's Habits2Goals interview spotlights a phenomenal CEO and entrepreneur, Paul Reynolds, whose business insights come fast and furious. Paul is a lifelong entrepreneur and the CEO of EasiHair Pro, a leader in the hair extension industry that utilizes a revolutionary tape-in method. Growing up in Capetown, South Africa, with an entrepreneurial father, Paul learned the value of both hard work and taking time to enjoy life. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family, attended San Diego State University, and dreamed of owning his own business. His father steered him toward an accounting career to prepare him for the rigors and challenges of entrepreneurship, and while he enjoyed the work, he yearned for the freedom of working for himself. He figured out that "niches bring riches" and was inspired by his father's wig business to found EasiHair. Wigs were a niche, and hair extensions were a niche, and digging deeper, he realized a new, innovative form of hair extensions would be a profitable untapped niche. He was right, and his venture evolved into EasiHair Pro. In the process, he learned valuable lessons about learning what you truly need instead of what you think you need—knowledge that informed his core business values and direction. Listen in for a unique perspective on growing a business by identifying a niche, the importance of relationships and values in business, creating a customer-centered ideology, and understanding why slow is sometimes fast. S610: Lost
"Being 'lost' isn't as much about not knowing where you are as much as it is about knowing where you want to go." Today's Mind Bullet stems from a reader's feedback, appreciating the way we dig into the etymology of a word to extract its true meaning and look at it in a new light. We did this with our Quest episode, and today we put the spotlight on the word lost. First, why do we do this? A Zen quote says, "To the beginner all things are possible, and to the expert few things are possible." When we keep a growth mindset—a beginner's mind—we find ourselves always open to learning. Too often we close ourselves off to learning with our preconceived notions. Take the word lost. The definition of lost is, "Unable to find one's way; not knowing one's whereabouts." We usually default to the second understanding of lost—not knowing one's whereabouts. But the first part of the definition is critical when we're trying to move on from our own feelings of being lost. We've all said it and felt it: "I feel lost." But it's not about not knowing our whereabouts; it's about knowing what to do. When you're unable to find your way, what you need is a direction, goal, or vision. Being lost isn't about where you are; it's about where you want to go. Listen in to hear more about finding your way when you feel lost, evaluating what you really want in life, and how having a direction takes you from being lost to finding your right path. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S609: How Can I Stay Motivated After Failure?
"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” ~Thomas Edison Today's Frequently Asked Friday is deceptively straightforward: How can you stay motivated after repeated failures? First, let's get a "right perspective" on failure. Is failure the opposite of success? Absolutely not! Anyone who has ever succeeded has failed along the way. Think about Thomas Edison and his fabled 10,000 failures before he refined and invented the lightbulb. Was he wondering how to stay motivated? No! Every time he failed, he felt one step closer to success. Whether in business or any area of life, "failure" isn't the opposite of success. Failure means energy and effort was put toward a goal, so the experience is valuable. The real danger is hopelessness. But what about motivation? Think about your motive. As Tony Robbins said, "If you have a big enough why, you can always find the how." Listen in to hear about using failure as a stepping stone to success, figuring out if your why is powerful enough, and how to adapt when your goal needs some recalibrating. S607: The 10,000 Hour Rule
"Practice isn't the thing you do once you're good. It's the thing you do that makes you good." ~Malcolm Gladwell Today's Mind Bullet revolves around a famous success tenet that, when you look deeper, simply reflects the magic of The Habit Factor: The 10,000-hour rule. The 10,000-hour rule was made famous in Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, which discusses the outlier-type variables that influence success, for example when you were born. 10,000 hours spent practicing a skill. This rings a bell. What is created when you do something over and over again until you become unconsciously proficient? That's right! A habit! In Outliers, while Gladwell points out the seemingly random occurrences that contribute to success, he discusses one consistent success factor that holds true across all instances: the 10,000 rule. That is, practicing a specific task that can be accomplished with 20 hours of work a week for 10 years, leading to otherworldly proficiency. Tune in for more on Gladwell's 10,000-hour rule, the one great constant among extreme success stories, and how the Habit Factor compounds supportive behaviors to carry us automatically toward our goals. *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S606: How Long To Develop a Good Habit?
"Good habits happen when planned; bad habits happen on their own." ~Grunburg This Frequently Asked Friday throws it back to a core concept: How long does it take to develop a good habit? (For more on this topic, check out Season 4's What Is Habitstrength? and What's the Best Way to Build a Good Habit?, and Season 2's How Long Does it Really Take to Build a Good Habit?) Building a good habit DOESN'T take a week, or 14 days, or the mythical 21 days some like to tout. The 21-day myth, in particular, gained traction thanks to its inclusion in Psycho-Cybernetics, by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, who said, "It usually requires a minimum of about 21 days to effect any perceptible change in a mental image.” Newer research actually points to 66 days to create a habit, but even this isn't a fixed number. What's critical is hitting all three major components to building a habit (according to Stephen Covey in his 7 Habits of Highly Successful People): desire, knowledge, skill—or as we've tweaked the formula, the capacity to do the work. Listen in to learn how PARR is the framework for creating a good new habit, what elements must be present, how the Habit Factor methodology breaks through all the myths, and how long it REALLY takes to build a good new habit. S605: David Rendall
"What makes us weird also makes us wonderful. What makes us weak also makes us strong." ~David Rendall Habits2Goals is proud to welcome a true "freak," professional speaker, bestselling author, Ph.D., and fellow Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim adventurer David Rendall. Growing up, David was told he’d never be successful because he didn’t fit the mold— he couldn’t sit still, he talked too much, and he didn’t listen. He tried to conform to the norm and even pursued a career in counseling psychology. But he ended up unhappy, unsuccessful, and never actually worked in his "chosen" field. Known as "the Freak," David realized that his supposed flaws were actually strengths. Even the term "freak" has two meanings — someone who is different and perceived in a negative light, or someone who is different and admired (think Giannis Antetokounmpo, the "Greek Freak"). The kid who was criticized for talking too much now speaks for a living, teaching revelatory management practices to get the most out of employees by embracing their unique differences and celebrating their flaws. Listen in to hear more about a transformational philosophy that embraces flaws and frees talented individuals from the constraints of conforming to what's "normal." Enjoy the episode! S604: Quest
"Well I'll tell you something, this is no longer a vacation, it's a quest. It's a quest for fun, I'm gonna have fun and you're gonna have fun, we're all gonna have so much ****ing fun..." Clark Griswold This Mind Bullet, Quest, was inspired by two things: a listener, Micheal K., who wrote in suggesting an episode about questions, and Chevy Chase's iconic Clark Griswold character from the Vacation movies. A little background: Emotionally keyed up and on the edge of sanity after a series of mishaps on his family's way to Wally World, Clark announces that the family trip is no longer a vacation—it's a quest for fun. He goes on to announce that they'll have so much fun they'll need plastic surgery to remove their grins, among other things. (Warning: Clip is played in unedited form, complete with F words.) Quest is at the root of the word question, and quest and question are all part of the same process. We are all on a quest in our lives, and asking the right questions is the key. Asking questions cues our mind to develop answers. Reader Michael suggests that asking questions and answering them is an excellent anchor for the habits we are striving to develop on our quest toward our goals. Listen in to hear more about the relationship between quests and questions, why asking the right questions can set your quest on the right course, and how important it is to dig into the root of words that are significant to us (such as habit!). *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates. S603: How to Kill a Bad Habit
"A nail is driven out by another nail. Habit is overcome by habit.” ~Desiderius Erasmus On the first Frequently Asked Friday of Habits2Goals Season 6, we tackle a back-to-basics topic first visited in Season 1: How to kill a bad habit. The formula is simple: To kill a bad habit, use the three "ments": environment, replacement, and experiment. Say you need to kill the bad habit of drinking beer. To control your environment and make it conducive to quitting this habit, don't buy beer. Need to quit smoking? Don't buy cigarettes or be around those who smoke. The bottom line: If your environment is conducive to a bad habit, that bad habit isn't going anywhere. Create impediments to create a prohibitive environment! Substitute comes next: If you're quitting beer, perhaps substitute it with non-alcoholic beer. If your habit is smoking, go for a walk when your friends go out for a smoke. Remember that just as a nail is driven out by another nail, habit is driven out by another habit. Next, experiment: Nothing in life is static, so try things out and find what works for you. Listen in to learn the fundamentals of killing a bad habit without disrupting social cues and conditions, and how the three "ments" are game-changers when you're trying to change your life. Enjoy the episode! *** New listeners: By texting the word "HABITS" to the mobile phone number "33444" you will instantly receive your "hack"/habit tracker/habit development template, or you can download it here: thehabitfactor.com/templates.
