EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY, Prelaunch Series: 2 of 6 (The 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System)
"Narrative imagining—STORY—is the fundamental instrument of thought. Rational capacities depend upon it. It is our chief means of looking into the future, of predicting, of planning, and of explaining." ~Mark Turner EVERYTHING is a F*cking STORY goes on sale 10.1.22! Grab the FREE excerpt while available: https://everythingastory.com "EVERYTHING" culminates nearly 20 years of deliberation, collaboration, and meditation, all in the interest of deconstructing human behavior for the purposes of goal achievement. EVERYTHING debuts as a "prequel" and completes a "trilogy" MG never knew existed. Martin began writing The Habit Factor® shortly before 2005; it was published in 2010. Then, in 2015, The Pressure Paradox™ was published. EVERYTHING breaks new ground (similar to The Habit Factor® in 2010). Its innovative 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System is both a model and framework that's already made an impact on coaching circles worldwide. In this episode, MG shares the emergence of the 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System and how it is the result of the trilogy. Further, MG explains how it sharply contrasts with any and all existing and prevalent behavior models. For instance, the behavior models CBT and TTM demonstrate behavior in a linear and/or circular fashion. The 3 Circles of Behavior Echo-System suggests that the core influencers of our behavior echo or reverberate to influence each other (non-linearly). MG peers deeper into congitive linguistics insights relative to "compression" and "scripting." All told, these ideas add a depth and richness that make EVERYTHING an educational and entertaining read. October 2022, EVERYTHING goes on sale! 7 Common, Monster Mistakes when trying to build new habits
"If I gave you $1,000 to track 3 habits for one day could you do it? Everyone knows that they could!" Martin recaps seven notable and common mistakes people make when trying to develop new habits. #1) They forget IT'S A PROCESS! Unfortunately, many believe habit tracking is an ALL or nothing proposition! "It doesn't matter if you've failed 163 times, you are experimenting—keep trying!" #2) They simply put a dot next to the habit and move on! When it comes to habit tracking, do NOT do what 99% of habit trackers recommend...simply put a dot and move on. Don't do that! Search: "P.A.R.R. Plan, Act, Record & Reassess and The Habit Factor" #3) They focus on THE NEGATIVE HABIT. Put your energy and focus into cultivating the NEW habit! Put more time and attention on the new habit that should replace the old one. #4) They do not understand what a "Tracking period" is. People do not understand the significance of "Tracking Periods" and exactly HOW LONG THEY SHOULD BE TRACKING! How long do you think you should be tracking? #5) They do not add notes to their tracking! When it comes to tracking, besides adding a dot (which is very weak), they don't add comments! Adding notes to your tracking reaffirms your commitment and your intention! #6) They think bursts of energy are important. The cultivation of habit rests upon consistency over a period of time. Daily bursts of energy do not facilitate habit development. It may feel good to give yourself many dots in one day, but it's not valuable relative to habit development. #7) They underestimate the influence that the environment has on cultivating habits. Personal mastery is simply a one-day-at-a-time 'event'. If you can "win" today, you can do "win" tomorrow. Do that more days than not, and you'll compile a remarkable life! It begins with habit tracking the RIGHT WAY! ; ) For more info: just google P.A.R.R. and The Habit Factor! 👊 YOU CAN BEGIN TODAY by downloading the free app or habit tracking template now. Habits and Goals: The Crucial Relationship
"Habits and goals, by design, complement each other." Oh, the irony. When The Habit Factor® was published in 2010, the idea of using habits to achieve goals as a process for goal achievement was unheard of. The Habit Factor's subtitle demonstrates its originality at the time: An Innovative Method to Align Habits with Goals to Achieve Success. Due to its predominantly negative connotation, all of the prior goal achievement best practices excluded habit entirely. Processes like S.M.A.R.T. goals did not mention habits. Even scientific research papers that studied the relationship between habits and goals missed this important concept: The cultivation of habits, when aligned to a goal, will help you to achieve your goal more quickly. Fast forward to today, and it's almost like the exercise where 10 people line up to pass along a message. As the message moves from one person to the next, it becomes bastardized. The same can be said for The Habit Factor's original message. Somewhere along the way, habits have somehow become "better" than goals. This is erroneous and dichotomous; they complement each other. In this episode, MG reviews a few distinct qualities about each and how they work together. Enjoy the show! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. The Wind!
"Everything is difficult before it is easy." ~Thomas Fuller Resistance comes in many forms. The wind is a terrific example. It turns out that without any wind trees cannot grow strong and will topple over. The same is observed in our life. If we are without resistance—if there is no pressure—how can we grow stronger? Pursing goals and ideals provides ample resistance to grow, learn and become stronger. Lifting weights, as an example, proves resistance makes us stronger. The wind offers other clues. MG happens to notice that even boats lying at anchor, FACE THE WIND. This is analogous to us facing our problems as opposed to avoiding them. Jen shares a story of finally facing a business banking issue after avoiding it for a long time. The result: She was relieved and all that anticipated pain was way overblown. She was even able to be of service to the banker. The moral of the story: Most of the time, facing our challenges is our best course of action. The wind teaches us how we can grow and become stronger! Enjoy the show! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. Stay subscribed, and be sure to check out the new YouTube Channel. Balance Exists!
"Being off-balance is a sign to adjust, to move in the opposite direction—to regain equilibrium." Far too many Goo-Roos insist that balance is BOGUS—that BALANCE doesn't exist. What they appear to be missing is the dynamism of life. Life is hardly a static event. In fact, the very sensation that one is off-balance is proof that balance exists! The key is the awareness. The sensation of being off-balance presents an opportunity to make an adjustment. The truth is, everyone is off-balance from time to time, arguably MOST of the time. It's the adjustments that help keep one in balance and harmony. Under a deadline to complete a project, it's easy to lose balance, for example, not eat right or exercise. A 'successful' entrepreneur recently posted about his breakdown in an elevator just two years prior. His great lesson was that he was too far off-balance, taking work too seriously and not enjoying the process. Observe any tightrope walker—take a picture of them at any moment in time—and they will be off-balance. Yet, if they're good, they'lll make it to the other side. Why? Because they make adjustments along the way! Enjoy the show! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. Stay subscribed, and be sure to check out the new YouTube Channel. Habits vs. Skills: What's the Difference?
"Today is the eight day of the month. Tomorrow is the 13th." ~Zen Koan Skills vs. habits. Habits vs. skills. What's the difference? Bound by language, experts in behavioral science tend to struggle as they attempt to delineate the two. (See Zen koan above). MG suggests these scientists are missing the most important aspect of their relationship: How similar habits and skills are! There are many favorable reasons to regard habits and skills as nearly identical. First, it helps to remove the predominately negative connotation that habits carry. Skills are rarely, if ever, thought of as "bad" or negative. Second, it reinforces how POSITIVE HABIT BUILDING FOLLOWS THE SAME PROCESS AS SKILL BUILDING. This is precisely what The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. method has taught since 2010. When it comes to developing good habits, the same sort of desire, effort, and practice is required that skills demand. Which underscores how ineffective "The Habit Loop" is when it comes to intentional habit building. Further, by juxtaposing P.A.R.R. against "The four levels of competence" model, developed by Martin M. Broadwell, we can see how both habit and skill capability improve similarly. LEVEL ONE: Unconscious Incompetence: I don't even know that tying my shoes will be helpful. LEVEL TWO: Conscious Incompetence: I've just started to learn, and I'm really struggling. LEVEL THREE: Conscious Competence: I'm much better at tying my shoes now, and it's getting easier. LEVEL FOUR: Unconscious Competence: The highest level: I tie my shoes without even looking or much thought! Level four is where both habits and skills share the greatest similarity and, interestingly enough, they reside in the same place in the brain!. It always takes effort and practice to develop good habits, just like it does for skills. Enjoy the show! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. Negativity!
"Awareness is like the sun. When it shines on things they are transformed." ~Thich Naht Hanh In a universe comprised of energy, it's impossible to extract negativity. So, what is it's value? It turns out, negativity has tremendous value. Within medicine for instance, a negative Covid-19 test is very positive. Science experiments with negative results bring the scientist closer to a correct solution. Negativity can be problematic in relationships. Most humans tend to gravitate toward positive, kind and loving relationships. Even though people who are negative may be smarter or funnier, they are often cynical and pessimistic. Too much negativity leads one toward isolation and loneliness. With a little awareness and effort, like tracking new positive habits, a negative personality can become more positive. Enjoy the show! PAIN!
"Genius is the infinite capacity for taking pains." ~Thomas Carlyle Pain is something everyone can relate to. Pain hurts. Yet, what happens when we pursue a goal and along the way, encounter pain? Should we just quit? Another definition of pain is "careful effort; great care or trouble." Pain is often a requirement for growth and learning. And, pain is a key, leading indicator that one is on the path toward something meaningful and worthwhile. Hence, Carlyle's great quote above. Your goal may be getting more fit, or writing the next great novel. Rest assured, tremendous pain stands between you and the desired outcome! Strangely, it was a tweet that inspired this episode. The man behind the tweet insisted that it was a high tolerance for pain that keeps people stuck; in undesirable jobs, relationships, etc. The truth is, it's more likely the opposite. Chances are good that they believe making any change will be more painful than staying where they are. Unfortunately, the desire for stasis—to remain unchanged—in an ever-changing world, is unrealistic. Thus, the importance of becoming comfortable with change and the type of pain that is felt when one heads toward their most important goals and ideals. The Accordion Method: How to Improve Productivity & Creativity
"The successful person is just the average person, focused." Why are deadlines important? Deadlines create pressure. Pressure creates focus and concentration, which are essential components of productivity and creativity. The accordion method, much like the whimsical musical instrument, works by creating pressure and then releasing it. The accordion is a terrific model for how anyone can intentionally use pressure to be more focused and productive. The challenge for many people is that they don't appreciate the value of pressure, largely because it creates discomfort. Thus, few people impose deadlines on themselves. Many believe life is already too pressure-riddled—adding more pressure would be too stressful. The interesting thing is that, without controls and constraints, such as deadlines, human energy is boundless and unfocused. That doesn't mean you never get tired; it means you're not directing your energy with focus and concentration upon a goal or target. Goals, targets, and milestones create pressure that guides our energy! The beauty is that The Habit Factor® method, by design, involves a series of constraints that helps anyone become more productive and even more creative. Enjoy the episode! Strengths vs. Weaknesses
"So many Goo-Roos preach the idea that you should just focus on your strengths. The reason it's called 'Personal Development' is it involves both—improving your weaknesses and capitalizing on strengths." "Shouldn't people just focus on what they are good at?" Someone asked MG this question when he recommended tracking fitness habits even if fitness isn't someone's strength. It's crucial to point out that The Habit Factor® methodology is both a specific process to develop habits by following P.A.R.R., and a general framework that allows the user to identify their goal along with the supportive habits that will help them achieve that goal. The Habit Factor® allows the end-user to decide upon any habit to track. If they only want to track their strengths, they can. However, since traits like discipline, focus, and concentration are habits that can be cultivated—and they help to foster other habits—they are foundational. Similarly, habits related to fitness and wellness are not only foundational because they improve our energy, they greatly influence our probability of achieving any goal. The moral of the story is that personal development is a never-ending pursuit that involves both the cultivation of new skills and habits that may not be strengths and optimizing our strengths. Not all habits are equal, and challenging oneself with a sincere desire to progress is the path to self-improvement. Enjoy the episode! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. EFFORT!
"Effort is the special ingredient that helps one to develop discipline. P.A.R.R. is the process that reduces the effort." Effort, as a concept, is so significant that it's part of the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path. While there are very few things we can control directly, our effort is one of them. In a post-game press conference, pursuing his 4th NBA title, Steph Curry reminded the press, "The one thing I can control is my effort." What makes the topic interesting is that it's the desire to be lazy—to put in less effort— that often sparks innovation and creativity. Exhibit A, B, and C: The lawn mower, automobile, and blender. While laziness may inspire creativity and innovation, it's putting in the cliched 110% effort toward our passions and goals that helps to assure their realization. The guaranteed formula for success is to do both: Work smart and hard. Further, it's important to know that energy can constrain effort. A sick person can't give maximum effort compared to when they're well. Most importantly, a lack of energy and effort will constrain our success and achievement, at least in the beginning. Even the worker who praises themself for only working four hours a week most certainly put in 80-plus hours a week in the beginning. Enjoy the episode! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. How to Use Scheduling to Build Habits
"An essential ingredient to scheduling and habit building is experimenting." MG and Jen discuss this week's all important topic: How to use scheduling to best cultivate habits. In short, the day and time you choose to cultivate a habit largely depends upon the habit itself. If the habit is creative, such as "writing" you may want to set aside the times of day you are most creative. If the habit is exercise related, than you'll want to identify the best times and days you'll have the time and energy. By following P.A.R.R. (Plan, Act, Record & Reassess), and identifying the "targets" days (and times), you'll have a plan to cultivate each habit. Further, P.A.R.R. is flexible enough and allows you the ability to skip "target days" and/or continue to experiment with different times and days in subsequent four-week tracking periods. Most importantly scheduling simply reaffirms one's intention to cultivate the habit. However, it's only via the daily tracking data that one can assess and experiment. Enjoy the episode! Rituals vs. Habits
"A ritual is simply a series of habits." MG and Jen discuss a particularly interesting relationship between habits and rituals that is rarely, if ever, talked about. Consider the times you have sudden insight; driving, showering, napping, sleeping, jogging, or lifting weights. Performing habits tends to trigger creative insight, perhaps due to the brain wave frequency in which habit operates—the Alpha and Theta levels. By definintion, habits require little or no conscious thought. This simple aspect is what frees up one's mind to allocate resources elsewhere—a space that allows the subconsicious to help solve problems that the conscious mind had been working on previously. Festina Lente
"Be quick, but don't hurry." ~Coach Wooden Festina Lente: Augustus, the Roman emperor, thought so much of the adage that its symbol ended up on an ancient Roman coin—a dolphin wrapped around an anchor. What is Festina Lente? Festina Lente is the wise and powerful reminder that our time is precious and limited. Thus, it's imperative to move (and live) with a sense of urgency while at the same time remaining balanced and calm. Legendary basketball coach John Wooden, who likely rephrased the sentiment, used to tell his players, "Be quick, but don't hurry." Quickness is essential, but hurrying and losing our balance is a waste of time and resources. Thus, we must move with urgency while retaining our poise and balance. The beauty is this: Festina Lente could be the motto for The Habit Factor®, as it parallels its philosophy to a tee. The Habit Factor® methodology demands users identify a key essential outcome in their life (creating urgency). Still, it clearly demonstrates that the path to a goal is via the intentional and deliberate cultivation of that goal's supportive habits. Life is short, and time is precious. It's crucial to plan and act accordingly. Enjoy! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. Stay subscribed, and be sure to check out the new YouTube Channel. The Dishwasher 2!
"How well you load the dishes determines the quality of the wash." Once again, we revisit the dishwasher in this episode, "The Dishwasher 2." The idea of proper dishwasher loading calls to mind the GIGO concept. GIGO simply means Garbage In, Garbage Out. GIGO originated in the programming world, and the idea applies to many other aspects of our lives. Consider your fitness level relative to your exercise and diet: Garbage In, Garbage Out. Many famous scientists, spiritualists, and philosophers contend that the same concept applies to the quality of your thinking and your life's results: Garbage In, Garbage Out. Learn how the basic, everyday task of loading the dishwasher can be your path to enlightenment! Enjoy! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. Habitstrength™ Dammit!
"It costs $0.00 to become a master of habit and skill development. Understanding how to cultivate habitstrength™ is your first key." ~Grunburg Forgive the swearing! For 12-plus years, Martin has taught and preached that habit development for humans has little to do with Cue, Routine, Reward – aka the "Habit-Loop" – and much more to do with intention, action, and reflection. The "Habit Loop" concept originated after a study of rodents. Unfortunately, the well-intended "Habit-Loop" advice has proliferated all over the internet, yet it provides HUMANS with very little understanding of how to intentionally build habits. Humans possess three powerful, innate capacities: CHOICE, INTENTION, and REFLECTION. By following The Habit Factor's PARR methodology – Plan, Act, Record, and Reassess – one can easily develop habitstrength over time. Once you understand habitstrength, you can – and should – apply PARR to develop any habits or skills that align with your most important goals! Enjoy! More "tweener" episodes are on the way. 6 Inches
"Golf is a game of inches and the most important are the six inches between your ears." ~Arnold Palmer Much like golf, LIFE is often a game of inches. It's the "six inches" betwen our ears that we tell ourselves all sorts of stories. Stories about ourselves and the world at large. These stories tend to reveal themselves in our decisions, actions and results. At any given moment, one could be telling themselves an infinite number of stories. Yet, most of us aren't too discerning about which ones consume our attention. Almost all breakthroughs in goal achievment and personal tranformation, including habit change, begin with a new and different story. Further, the listerner is challenged to listen to which stories they 'play' habitually (on autopilot), and how those stories have impacted their life. More "tweener" episodes are on the way. Why I Run
"Nobody likes burpess until they love burpees." Without getting too metaphysical, it's important to realize LIFE is simply a one-day-at-a-time "event". Thus, the importance of cultivating the habit of exercise, which helps to optimize one's emotional and physical wellness from one day to the next. MG was contemplating why he enjoyed burpees so much. The answer suprised him. He thought he exercised to stay fit, but that is really the secondary benefit. The primary benefit; exercising "tunes" one's emotions for the day favorably. The exercise habit has at least three benefits: 1) It primes one's emotions 2) It provides self-efficacy and, 3) It provides an easy "WIN" for the day, regardless of how the rest of the day shapes up. Approaching each day with a better emotional disposition, due to the habit of exercise is the real benefit of working out. Enjoy the episode! Jack Daly Interview, Life By Design
"I must've interviewed 50 business people that summer...they all had a common theme—GOALS!"~Jack Daly H2G welcomes back the legendary business sales coach and icon, Jack Daly. Jack's releasing his 10th book, Life By Design. The 15-time Ironman competitor has also completed 100 marathons in 50 states and on seven continents. He achieves his goals and lives life to the fullest by following his own Life by Design techniques. As a 13-year-old caddie at a country club, he was both curious and intentional. Comparing the lifestyle of his hardworking father to the men at the country club, who golfed on weekdays, Jack was curious to learn what they did differently. By the end of the summer, almost all the members knew the young caddie. The payoff for Jack was enormous: He tripped upon a process that he's been living for decades and now shares in his latest book. At 73, Jack still employs these practices each and every day. Jack DESIGNS his life with intention—and tracks all the activities and habits that are important for his goals, rather than just allowing life to happen. While Jack readily admits that life often "happens anyway," he insists it's important to understand what you can control and move toward your ideal life with intention, every day! Enjoy the episode! Infinity Symbol
"Habit: A shackle for the free."~Ambrose Bierce In 2009, MG was tasked with developing a logo for The Habit Factor® app. The vision of the infinity symbol was one that he couldn't escape. He proceeded to integrate the infinity symbol as the cross-beam within the letter "H". The reason for the infinity symbol? The more he reflected upon habit, the more the idea of universal patterns came to mind. MG shared these ideas when he was invited to present at TEDx in the United Arab Emerits, back in 2011. It turns out habit patterns are everywhere and for good reason. Energy has a tendency toward pattern and rhythm. That means even our human energy—our behavior—forms into patterns (for better or worse). Think of how you drive to work, brush your teeth and even the meals you eat. The only important distinction MG was intent on sharing; unlike other creatures, humans have the capacity to establish new habits patterns and even break others, at will. Thus, the infinity symbol within the logo had to be broken, symbolizing one's ability to 'at will' form new habit patterns. Unlike other creatures in nature, humans have the incredible capacity to develop any habit pattern that is aligned with their goals! Today, so many other habit apps and books have since followed using the same imagery— an infinity symbol to represent HABIT. Enjoy the episode! Moment 2 Moment
"Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such."~Henry Miller What's the main difference between "successful" people and "failures"? Arguably, it's that they've simply compiled more daily "wins" over their lifetime than loses. It's actually a bit more nuanced than that, as any given day may provides critical defining "moments". What's an example of a critical defining moment? Let's say someone or something disappoints you. Now you're angry and frustrated. How are you going to respond? Each moment presents a bifurcation point; an opportunity to stay on the path or, to fall off the path. In short, "successful" people stay on "the path" from one moment to the next, more often than not. How do they do that? To stay on The PATH (prior episode), they respond rather than react! When problems arise, expectations are dashed, in short, when "sh*t happens", "successful" people choose to respond better; more positively, most of the time. It's the "unsuccessful"—the ones that react emotionally, flip out and therefore, push themselves further and further off "The Path". In total, over one's lifetime, all of these moments compound from moment to moment, day after day. Enjoy the episode! The Closet!
"If work expands to fill the time allotted, then you can count on 'stuff' expanding to fill the space allotted." Aristotle once observed, "Nature abhors a vacuum." This week, MG combines A's brilliant observation with Cyrile Northcote Parkinson's "law," known as "Parkinson's Law" — "Work expands to fill the time allotted." The resultant corollary: "Stuff expands to fill the space allotted." To illustrate his point, MG shares a couple of quick stories from his home: "The Drawer of Death" and the "Closet of Death." While nobody actually died in either, these spaces are consummed with "STUFF"! They are filled with everything, and yet, whenever you go looking for something, you can't find it. The reason for sharing this? YOUR MIND is the drawer and closet—your mind is SPACE to be filled. While keeping an 'empty' mind is a noble pursuit, it's impossible for extended periods of time. Even the awareness of possessing an empty mind, paradoxically, produces a thought, which proves it cannot be empty! The beauty is, when you know your mind won't be empty for too long, your mission is to fill it with "good" stuff—stuff that supports your goals and ideals! Don't let your mind become the drawer or closet of death. Choose to fill your mind with good, supportive thoughts and stories that work to support your goals and ideals. If your mind is going to get filled, choose to intentionally fill it with the good stuff! Enjoy the episode! LIMITERS!
"Give someone just 30 seconds, and if they're being honest, they can tell you the one or two skills that, when crafted to excellence, could change their life." Last week's episode, How Can I Use This?, was all about the 3 R's—being Responsible, Resourceful, and Resilient. This week, MG explores a concept he learned when training for his first Ironman: limiters. The Ironman is a triathlon comprised of three separate skills (in order): Swimming, Cycling, and Running. In Going Long!, a great book that was recommended to MG, the author advises focusing most of your training time on your key limiter—that is, the one weakness likely to hold you back or most significantly impact your finish. For MG, the limiter was obvious right away: running! Accordingly, he spent 80% of his training time trying to improve his running technique—his limiter. By doing this, he became a better runner, and the conditioning the running provided became a nice overlap effect for the other two events, swimming and cycling. You can use this same strategy—focusing on your most significant limiter—as you pursue your goals and professional aspirations. What one or two skills, if you were to develop them to excellence, would take your career to the next level? Most people immediately know the answer. While many "Goo Roos" advise people to ignore their weaknesses and focus only on strengths, the truth is, many weaknesses must be addressed and can't be outsourced. For instance, nobody is going to lose weight or get fit for you. And, in some cases, you may have to be your own sales or marketing person, even if you don't see these areas as your strengths. Whether it's writing, public speaking, marketing, or sales, identify your key limiter as it relates to your most essential goals. Much like completing an Ironman, identifying and improving your limiter will go a long way toward helping you reach your personal and professional goals. Enjoy the episode! How Can I Use This?
Chances are very good that your greatest problem at this moment could become your greatest asset in the future! "How can I use this?" That's a question you ought to develop the habit of asking. It can be an incredibly valuable question. Chances are very good that the biggest problem you are facing right now may represent your biggest opportunity and future breakthrough. Are you "poor," perhaps having a hard time making money? Terrific! How can you use that? Are you having a problem gaining and keeping friends? Terrific! How can you use that? Are you overweight and out of shape? Terrific! How can you use that? The fact is, your current problems and weaknesses are excellent opportunities in disguise—if approached with the proper mindset, encapsulated in the 3 R's. ResponsibleIt's your problem. You own it, and nobody is going to solve it for you. Resourceful You are a creature—a creative individual who is capable of coming up with novel solutions! Resilient Failure is just an opportunity to begin anew, more intelligently! You manage to process the "failures" as information and adapt appropriately. The truth is, it's your life, and much like being on a deserted island, there is nobody to b***h and complain to. Rather, you have to dig in and apply the 3 R's! In the movie Castaway, Tom Hanks's character had a made-up friend, Wilson (a Wilson volleyball). He complained to Wilson and talked through his problems with Wilson. Talking through his problems with Wilson gave Hanks's character the opportunity to articulate his frustrations and concerns, which ultimately helped him create solutions. You can and should do the same. Articulate and even write out your challenges; assess and review your weaknesses, and then ask, "How can I use this!" Enjoy the episode! Realism!
"Here's some 'realism' for you: You're rotating around the sun at 67,000 mph as the Earth spins at 1,000mph ...You're in the middle of a miracle sandwich." Realism comes in many forms. Is it realistic that if you jump off a 10-story building you'll hit the ground—"splat!"? Absolutely! Don't do that! But what about when it comes to setting and pursuing your goals and ideals? A recent comment on The Habit Factor's Facebook page said, "I prefer to set 'realistic' goals." When it comes to your goals, be careful what stories you subscribe to about what is "realistic". Steve Jobs was famously known for his "reality distortion field." When lead engineers at Apple told him something was "impossible", he refused to accept that as the final answer. Instead, he challenged the story. Engineers told him the Mac could not boot any faster; ultimately, it booted 3x faster. When they told him it was impossible to develop a phone with just one button, he challenged them. Today's iPhone model has no buttons. When it comes to your goals and ideals, be sure to challenge your story. Chances are very good you do not know what you are really capable of. Is it "real" that you could never become a great, persuasive public speaker? Is it real that your kids won't listen to you no matter what you do? Is it real that you're not able to jog because of your bad back or weight? "Whether you think you can or you can't, you're right." ~Henry Ford More often than not, what's "real" to us is just a story we've subscribed to. The beauty is we can experiment—test our stories and figure out what is truly possible and "real." Enjoy the episode! The Habit Factor® is designed to help you WIN the GAME-within-the-Game. THE Event!
"If you don't get it here, right now, you won't get it anywhere." ~Dr. Wayne Dyer Building off prior episodes, "Time: The Priceless Asset" and "The Game within The Game," this episode underscores an important awareness: Your time is limited, and THE Event is happening, right now! After a recent six-mile run, MG shared his run data with a good friend—a running buddy. The friend responded with a simple question, "Are you training for an event?" MG's response: “Nope.” Upon returning home, MG realized his mistake. He should have responded, "Yes!" The reality is, THE EVENT is happening right now, for everyone! Which begs the question: "How are you training for THE EVENT?" THE Event is LIFE!! Dr. Wayne Dyer used to say, “If you don’t get it here [the concept] right now, you're not going to get it anywhere." Your time is limited. Realizing that THE Event is live, right now, is your first step toward moving toward your most important goals and ideals. How are you participating in THE Event? Obstacles
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal." ~Henry Ford Arguably, a goal really isn't a goal if there are no obstacles. The pursuit of any worthwhile goal is sure to reveal a handful of challenges and obstacles along the way. Further, when you overcome an obstacle, several more tend to present themselves. While many Goo-Roos will tell you to focus exclusively on the process—NOT the outcome—they are only partially right. Focusing exclusively on the process tends to yield—exclusively—challenges. Too many obstacles, therefore, become totally overwhelming for anyone, even the grittiest of people. Occasionally, it's important to lift your gaze and focus on the ideal end-state: THE GOAL! Remind yourself why you undertook the endeavor in the first place! Since your emotions guide your focus and attention, too many obstacles can quickly drain your emotional reserves, grinding you to a halt! Time: The Priceless Asset
"When you don't have goals, you're telling the universe that you don't really value your time." Even if a person has no money, no job, and only fair health, they possess the one miraculous asset required to achieve any goal: TIME! Time spent purposefully affirms this observation: Setting goals is NOT optional. With time, anyone with worthy goals and ideals has the potential to succeed. However, when we don't have clear goals, ideals, or objectives, time is simply wasted. Drifting aimlessly for too long is one of the greatest time-wasters of all. Arguably, even the pursuit of an incorrect goal or one that changes over time is more valuable than drifting for too long. Time is the one asset that enables anyone, from one day to the next, to pursue their ideal future—their success. Thus, the opposite must be true: Wasting time—squandering the priceless asset of time—is the one universal characteristic of all "failures." Lollygagging and aimlessly drifting is painless in the short term, but it's really the fast-lane to a lifetime of pain and regret. Enjoy the episode! The Game Within The Game
"Within every game, there are tasks and objectives along the way; your life is no different. Tracking your habits from one day to the next helps you to win the game-within-the-game each and every day!" Anytime you're about to play a game, be it a computer, board, or sport, the very first thing you'll want to do is understand the game's objectives. That is: How are you going to win the game? It turns out, life is nearly identical. This is all the proof you need to fully understand the statement, "Intelligence is goal-directed behavior." The good – and bad – news is that we have to determine the main objectives for ourselves. Those who take the time to establish clear goals and objectives for their lives know where they're trying to go, even if specific goals and objectives change along the way. This is why we admire those who set goals for themselves and go after them; they know where they are going, and they know from one day to the next if they are "winning." Unfortunately, too many people struggle if they haven't defined the goals that are important to them. The "game-within-the-game" means that once you've determined the big goals, "winning" comes down to daily victories. The "winning" can only happen one day at a time. This is precisely why The Habit Factor's FREE Habits-to-Goals tracking template (the World's FIRST Habits-to-Goals tracking template) has proven helpful to thousands of people around the world! The Free Habits-to-Goals Tracking TEMPLATE guides users in breaking down their BIG goal into the daily habits they must practice from one day to the next. By following The Habit Factor's PARR methodology, your sense of control, self-efficacy, and happiness greatly improves because you know, from one day to the next, if you're winning the game-within-the-game. STOP!
"The speed of concentration is slow and/or stopped!" A perfectly timed New Year's episode. What do you think you are – in essence? A soul? The chemicals that make up your composition? What is it that comprises your "WHO?" It turns out, WHO we are is WHAT we do consistently. We're really just a compilation of our thought and behavior habits. Your habitual actions, behaviors, and decisions forge your CHARACTER. Thus, in order for anyone to change their RESULTS, the first thing they must do is alter their patterns of thought and behavior—their habits. The very best way to do that is to STOP! STOP for a moment. STOP moving. STOP thinking. STOP acting out of habit. Just press pause and STOP! Anytime you don't like the results you are getting, it's time to STOP! In the computing world, A STOP code, is a way to identify a "BUG" in the program. If a computer encounters a problem, it STOPS! Our results are the product of our INPUT. Our input is our thought and behavior HABITS. How are you going to identify the new input required if you don't first STOP? Just like in the computing world, after you stop, you'll assess the existing results and identify the new input you need – the HABITS that are required. It's time to STOP. Assess. Ask questions What's working? What isn't? What can you be doing better or differently? What new habits should you try to cultivate? Which habits should you STOP! Developing the habit of stopping is one of the best ways to work smarter. The beginning of the change you seek is right on the other side of the STOP sign. Don't run—STOP! Enjoy the episode! Humility
"Any character trait, be it courage or honesty, even humility, can be cultivated." Another Goo-Roo-inspired Mind-Bullet. To be fair, the Goo-Roo thought there was a catch-22 that prevented someone from intentionally cultivating the HUMILITY trait. In other words, if you were too prideful about developing humility, how could you truly be humble? First, to be proud, privately, about your accomplishments doesn't preclude you from being humble. Second, had the Goo-Roo read Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, he'd understand that HUMILITY was actually the 13th virtue Ben cultivated via a lifetime of habit-tracking. Though Ben was circumspect about the very same concern, he wrote, "I never arrived at the perfection I had been so ambitious of obtaining, fell far short of it, yet I was, by the endeavor, a better and happier man than I otherwise should have been if I had not attempted it." Third, too much humility leads to other issues, as MG learned from a Navy SEAL who cautioned against it. This SEAL insisted that the etymology of the words "humility" and "humiliated" were closely related for a reason: too much humility often leads to humiliation. At the age of 81, Benjamin Franklin recounted cheerfully in his autobiography the success he'd had cultivating his 13 virtues, including HUMILITY. Enjoy the episode! Roots & Weeds
"Never does nature say one thing and wisdom another." Juvenal Today's episode is inspired by a little home improvement project, as MG caps some sprinklers and removes a small amount of grass to make his patio eco/water-friendly. The project is delayed and becomes much tougher than expected due to the appearance of multiple roots underground. The significant difference between ROOTS and WEEDS becomes striking, particularly in the context of personal development. Roots vs. Weeds. First, roots grow imperceptibly slowly. It's impossible to notice their growth from one day to the next. However, return in several months or years, and it's impossible not to notice. Roots are substantial, incredibly strong, and very difficult to extract. Finally, roots grow underground, in silence, and out of the spotlight; roots aren't flashy. Weeds, on the other hand, possess the exact opposite traits. Weeds grow incredibly fast—almost "flashy" in their growth (not unlike certain personalities on Instagram). They're almost impossible not to notice, and they love to show off their growth. Finally, weeds are weak. Weeds have little if any foundation upon which they have grown and are easily removed. The question for the listener: Are you growing roots or weeds? Are you trying to be flashy and show off your growth from one day to the next? Or, are you focused on slow, steady growth underground, out of the spotlight? The question arises: How can one ensure that they're growing roots and not weeds? A great place to begin is by identifying your personal—and, if you're a business owner, company—values. Not coincidentally, much like a tree and its roots (values), over the years, thousands of decisions will splinter off into branches guided by the values/roots that have been planted and nourished. For enduring value and impact, ensure that you're growing roots. Enjoy the episode! Control 3
"Good habits happen when planned; bad habits on their own." Today's episode is about CONTROL and understanding four core aspects of control relative to our behaviors. The first component of control is our THINKING. Do you think you have the ability to control what you think, most of the time? With practice, you can absolutely control and direct your thinking most of the time. That doesn't mean controlling your thinking is easy, but it is possible. In fact, it could be argued that controlling your thinking is the first skill required to guide your life with intention and purpose toward your goals and ideals. The second aspect of control is relative to your feelings and emotions. The fact is, control over our feelings and emotions comes with maturity and practice – after all, that is emotional maturity. We know that a 1-year-old has zero control over their feelings and emotions and that an eight-year-old will have far more control over their feelings and emotions. While control over your feelings and emotions may never be 100%, with practice, it can dramatically increase. Emotional maturity is critically important as it allows us to respond rather than react. The third influencer of our behavior is the environment. Our environment can be anything from the people we hang out with – friends, family co-workers – to the clubs we join. Even the weather, furniture, pictures that surround us, or the clothes we wear constitute our environment. When it comes to controlling our environment, our influence is limited. While we can't control the weather, we can elect to stay indoors. Sometimes we can't control where we live, and sometimes we can. Thus, for purposes of discussion, we'll suggest that control over our environment is 50%. The final aspect of control is relative to our actions and behaviors. With practice and emotional maturity, we can respond rather than react. We can intentionally develop good habits that support our goals and ideals. Practicing control over our behavior is precisely what the PARR method of habit development teaches. PARR (Plan, Act, Record & Reassess) is about intentionally practicing behaviors to cultivate the good habits that support our goals and ideals. Enjoy the episode! Lost 2
"Nobody can create their ideal future any faster than one day at a time." We last covered "LOST" as a Mind-Bullet to underscore the concept that feeling "lost" is often far more about not knowing where you want to go and less about not knowing where you are. Since life is highly dynamic, the experience of feeling "lost" is universal. In today's episode, we revisit the concept from the vantage point of two prior episodes: The QUEST and The PATH! Once we subscribe to the idea that our great Quest is to create our ideal future, we can simply ask ourselves each night, before retiring: "Was I on the PATH today? If intelligence is goal-directed behavior, then it's imperative to strive for the most important goals. Since few goals are more important than creating your ideal future, the sensation of being "LOST" confirms that you're not on the PATH. The moral is clear: Being "LOST" may seem frustrating, but it's an important and valuable awareness that can lead you toward your ideal future. Enjoy the episode! Ted Ryce: Strength through Adversity
"Is it really about what we go through, or is it about something else? I don't want to be the guy people look at and say, 'Wow, that poor guy, he's been through a lot.'" ~Ted Ryce In this special episode of H2G, MG welcomes fitness expert Ted Ryce. Ted, a long-time physical and personal transformation coach who used to work with a handful of celebrities in Miami, now fills his time traveling the world, running his personal transformation coaching business, and hosting his own very popular podcast, "The Legendary Life." A great Japanese proverb states, "Adversity is the foundation of virtue." Few will experience the tragic, life-altering challenges Ted Ryce had to endure. At the age of 19, his younger brother was kidnapped and murdered. Later, his mother would die in a tragic car accident, and his sister would commit suicide. While Ted shares some of his best fitness, health, and well-being advice, he also shares many powerful life lessons. Rather than breaking his will or character, Ted accepted the tragedies as circumstances beyond his control and decided he would put his time and attention upon those things he could control: working out, developing discipline, and mastering his mindset and character. The tragedies Ted endured sent him on a personal development journey that forced him to strengthen his mind and body. "My life story SUCKS! It kind of...really sucks...but I don’t feel that bad...Why are people who don’t have this shitty story feeling worse than me, and why are they struggling so much? Is it really about what we go through in life, or is it about something else?" "I don't want to be the guy people look at and say, 'Wow, that poor guy, he's been through a lot. We all have the power to change ourselves...to change how we feel, to get rid of our stresses..." Listen in to hear how Ted navigated his life's hardships and learn about the various mindsets and techniques he used to optimize his mind and body. Enjoy the episode! I Hate My Job!
Q: How can I enjoy things I don't enjoy? MG fields a question that stood out from a recent survey. Maria wondered how she might enjoy some of the things she really doesn't, namely her job. MG recounts his experience – an early job out of college as a software support specialist. The only challenge? The job was never a challenge. MG was extremely bored by the work, which required no creativity. He was left feeling as though his contribution was insignificant. To answer Maria's question, he takes two tacks. First, MG leans on a great quote by Dr. Wayne Dyer, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." While the job was not really enjoyable, MG shifted his perception to the assets the job provided: good pay and the ability to surf as often as he wanted. It also provided an opportunity to learn from a young millionaire software developer. The second part of the solution was found in "The Great Eight that Separate," something Napoleon Hill used to talk about. While anyone might be tied to a job they don't like for eight hours, and while everyone must sleep approximately eight hours for their well-being, there still remains another eight hours for anyone to pursue their ideal future. By gleaning any assets he could from the job he didn't enjoy, and applying his time creatively toward his goals and ideals during "the other eight hours," he was able to move along the PATH on his QUEST. The postscript is that a future company he would co-found ultimately proliferated and flourished because of the skills and knowledge he gained from the software support job he didn't enjoy very much. Master Your Feelings
"Feelings, and feelings and feelings. Let me try thinking instead." ~C.S. Lewis As sentient beings, our feelings wield remarkable influence over our behaviors and, therefore, our lives. As covered in a prior episode (Feelings and Focus), how well you concentrate and focus, at any given moment, is most often directly tied to your feelings. Our ability to manage, channel, and master our emotions has a powerful effect on our ability to achieve our long-term goals—as well as guide new habit formation. Today's episode offers a powerful reminder: What we do from one moment to the next, if we're not aware, is often guided by our feelings. This understanding of feelings is both GOOD and BAD news. The bad news: Behavior change and goal achievement efforts can be sabotaged for those who are unaware of their emotional states. The good news is actually two-fold. First, feelings are ephemeral—they do not last very long. Secondly, with practice, we have the ability to master and channel our feelings to empower our behavior change and goal achievement efforts. By managing the stories we tell ourselves at any given moment, we can alter our feelings about nearly any behavior change effort. By asking a few critical questions, you can better guide your emotions to support and align your behaviors to your goals. Questions to ask habitually: 1) How do I feel right now? Do I think I can modify that feeling by changing my environment and/or revisiting the story I'm telling myself? 2) How do I feel about the behavior/habit I'm planning to track? 3) Does the effort inspire me, or is it dreadful? 4) What story could I tell myself about the successful outcome of my goal or behavior change effort to fully inspire my emotions to take positive action? The beauty is, by following The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. methodology for habit development, you already have a PLAN in place and "Target Days" set for tracking new habits. This alone has the ability to minimize unfavorable feelings that may not be supporting your habit change efforts. By Planning, Acting, Recording, and Reassessing the core, related behaviors (habits), you also begin to align your emotions with your most important goals. Enjoy the episode! The PLAN!
"If you fail to plan, are you planning to fail?" ~Benjamin Franklin As we continue The Quest—the pursuit of our ideal future—we recognize the journey requires that we step onto The Path! (previous episode) Once on The Path, we notice a powerful truth: Our ideal future only arrives ONE DAY AT A TIME. Thus, the essential question to ask daily is, "Was I on the path, today?" To make real progress along The Path conjures up another key question: What's The PLAN? The Plan is where the rubber meets the road. The Plan consists of two essential components: strategy and execution. What are you going to do today to make progress on The Path? How are you going to do it? And, importantly, how will you be held accountable? The strategy might be a model—copying a process by following someone who has already achieved what you're trying to achieve. There is a bit of caution when modelling; just realize, "No man can ever step into the same river twice." The second essential component of THE PLAN, execution, has two parts. How you are going to achieve it? And, how will you hold yourself accountable to the daily actions/behaviors? This is precisely why The Habit Factor's P.A.R.R. methodology is so effective, as it addresses both the strategy and the execution. By Planning, Acting, Recording, and Reassessing the core, related behaviors (habits), you move yourself down The Path and closer to your goal each and every day. Since we can only realize our ideal future one day at a time, P.A.R.R. is THE PLAN that helps anyone stay on The PATH and to WIN each and every day by tracking habits. Enjoy the episode! Not on the Path?
"Ill ALL habits gather by unseen degrees, as brooks make rivers, rivers run to seas." If being on "THE PATH" (last episode), is absolutely essential to assuring "the great adventure"—living the life of your dreams— then, how can you get ON THE PATH? This question conjures up a couple of other questions: 1) What keeps anyone from getting on the path in the first place? 2) How do you know it's the right path? The most common challenge preventing people from getting on the path is CLARITY. Many people just aren't clear where it is they want to go. Thus, it's tough to arrive at a destination that hasn't been defined, and even tougher to be on a path that takes you there! However, if someone is clear about where they want to go, but has not yet stepped on the path, it's almost always because they are afraid. Stepping on THE PATH takes courage, and courage, as Winston Churchill put it, is the foremost quality that helps to assure all others. Finally, one more common fear emerges: "How do I know this is the right path?" The answer is, you won't know. Nobody ever knows for sure which path for certain will carry them where they want to go. Nonetheless, the call for everyone is to BEGIN the journey. There are no guarantees. The good news is that once you adventure down a path, new challenges, opportunities, and information are provided—clues and gifts that will direct you closer toward your ultimate quest. The Path!
"It doesn't matter how slowly you go, just do not stop just do your best to STAY ON THE PATH." Jen Grant joins MG on today's episode, and they revisit the last episode (before the John Assaraf special), THE QUEST! If we can agree on Oprah's observation that the great adventure—the quest—is to live the life of your dreams, then the question becomes, HOW is that accomplished? How can anyone pursue the life of their dreams? It turns out that the answer to this all-important question can be found within another question: "Are you on the path?" In other words, it's hard to pursue any journey—any great quest—if you're not first ON THE PATH. It's a simple, powerful, and fundamental question: "Are you ON THE PATH?" Do not pass Go. The only way any person can achieve the life of their dreams is one single day at a time. Thus, the ONE question they should ask themselves each day is, "Was I on the path today?" When the answer is "YES" more days than not, you are very likely to realize your own "great adventure." However, the idea isn't to beat yourself up if you realize that you are not on THE PATH. Rather, it's simply an important awareness so that you can adjust your daily actions and behaviors in order to get on THE PATH as quickly as possible. The significance of this truth comes to light when you realize the power of intentionally creating good, supportive habits, TODAY—the habits that put you on THE PATH—to help ensure that they keep you on THE PATH tomorrow. The conversation boils down to a simple litmus test—one question— everyone should ask before retiring at night. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? John Assaraf and the 9th Annual Brain-A-Thon
"I'm not the smartest or dumbest person in the room, but I am the one that's willing to do whatever it takes to upgrade my mindset and my skill set, and I'm persistent as hell to achieve my goal, no matter what." John Assaraf In this special episode of Habits 2 Goals, John Assaraf—a two-time New York Times bestselling author and H2G's first two-time special guest—takes us deep into the essence of personal development by sharing his own breakthrough stories and strategies, as well as the latest developments in brain science as it relates to goal achievement. John and MG discuss the upcoming 9th annual Brain-A-Thon—a free event hosted by John Assaraf specifically designed to help people break through their own limiting beliefs. John was a below-average student who struggled mightily in school; he ultimately dropped out in 11th grade. Fortunately, he was introduced to a successful real estate investor who became his mentor, sharing a multitude of "success" insights. "When you’re interested in your goals, chances are they aren’t going to materialize. However, when you’re committed to your goals, your odds improve dramatically," Assaraf says. That was the first great lesson a young John Assaraf would receive from his millionaire mentor: be truly committed to your goals. “This mindset stuff really works!” Later on, John invested in a REMAX real estate franchise for the state of Indiana and grew it from a single office to 85 branches with more than 1,200 sales associates. In total, under his leadership, they would achieve $4.5 billion in revenue. By upgrading his mindset, his skill-set, and his emotional tool set, John became remarkably more effective. "People are either pleased with their existing results, or they feel they can do and achieve more," Assaraf explains. "Within the delta often lies essential mindset shifts and key, new behavior patterns." The Brain-A-Thon provides many free, powerful tools and insights, shared by the world’s top specialists in neuroscience and behavioral psychology. The event also includes many well-known experts who will be discussing various success principles. Participants will learn about shattering limiting beliefs and forging new mindsets that are congruent with their most important goals and ideals The proof is in the pudding; hence, this is the 9th annual Brain-A-Thon! Assaraf says, "I wanted this to be like the Jerry Lewis telethon, only with the mission to help as many as possible achieve a new level of understanding of how to harness their $100 billion computer and reach new levels of achievement!" [Note: As a follow-up to this episode, you're encouraged to learn more about John's backstory by listening to his first H2G interview here.] "Most of us have a brain worth $100 billion," Assaraf explains. "Science has invested more than that to recreate our brain and cannot come close. The question becomes, are you the best operator of your brain that you can be?" "In this day and age, there isn't any excuse for anyone who desires better results in any area of their life. It's all learnable for those who are truly committed!" Enjoy the episode! The Quest!
"The greatest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams." Oprah Winfrey In this episode we expand upon Oprah's insightful observation. What could be a greater adventure than pursuing the life of your dreams? You might say something like, "The best use of my life is to serve the homeless, starving and underprivileged." Such a response would only reaffirm, THE QUEST.. Thoreau put it this way, "If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams and endeavors to live the life they imagined, they will meet with a success in common hours." "Advancing confidently" toward your dreams is, as Oprah so brilliantly put it, THE great adventure. It is THE QUEST. As a creature—a creator—arguably this is WHY you're alive, to pursue the life of your dreams. This is your preeminent adventure—it is THE QUEST! MG overlays Joseph Campbell's, "The Hero's Journey" as a reference point and shares his favorite definition of success: "Creating your ideal future." Ultimately, ALL of these ideas intersect, merging beautifully to reaffirm this powerful observation: The biggest adventure you can pursue is to live the life of your dreams. That is THE QUEST. Receiving
Is it truly better to give than to receive? Why is receiving—being a gracious receiver—so important? Are there rewards and virtues when it comes to receiving "properly"? That's the topic Jen Grant and MG tackle in this week's episode. Whether it's a compliment or a gift, knowing how to accept whatever offering comes your way may be as much an art as a science. A few weeks ago, MG's G.T.R. (Good Things Report) was about a gift—an expensive e-bike—given to him by a good buddy. The friend swore that he couldn't use it anymore and MG would be doing him a favor by taking it. But, because the bike is so expensive, it's been very hard for MG to accept it graciously. Jen chimes in with some serious advice about the importance of receiving. Enjoy the episode! How much do you really know about habits and goals? Why Set Goals?
"People are not lazy. They simply have impotent goals—that is, goals that do not inspire them." ~Tony Robbins This week, MG and Jen Grant review the fundamentals of goal setting, mainly, why goal setting is NOT optional. They review 3 fundamental reasons why goal setting is essential for everyone. First, goal setting is proof of "intelligence in action!" Stealing a cue from the world of computer programming, if "artificial intelligence is goal-directed behavior," then an intelligent person must set goals. Secondly, setting goals adds meaning and purpose to life. Sadly, it's those who drift—who don't have worthwhile goals—who think life is boring, lacks meaning, and is worthless—even pointless. Yet, those who have worthwhile goals find value and purpose. Third, as demonstrated by The Habit Factor®, as you head toward your goal, the process demands that you cultivate supportive habits that will help you achieve that goal. You end up developing good, positive habits! So, if you're unsure about why goal setting is important, here are just three solid reasons, plus there's an important bonus reason that we'll cover. Hightest Value Habits
"The highest value habits are the ones that yield the greatest results relative to your most important goals and ideals." Last week, the discussion was about making sure we take more time to simply THINK about the activities that will yield the greatest consequences, relative to our goals and ideals. This week, the topic goes a bit further. Rather than focusing upon one-off "activities," the question is: Which HABITS will yield the highest value return once cultivated? Since it is our recurring behaviors—HABITS—that propel us toward our goals most efficiently and effectively, we ought to spend a significant amount of time just identifying the HIGHEST VALUE HABITS. The entire exercise falls beautifully in line with The Habit Factor's core methodology: P.A.R.R., Plan. Act. Record. Reassess. Make time to identify the core, related behaviors—HABITS— that will yield the HIGHEST VALUE RETURN and begin tracking them today (no more than 5 habits). Consequences
"Time and consequences go hand in hand." When you hear the word "consequences," what's the first thing you think? Not unlike the word "habit," "consequences" has a predominately negative connotation. Yet, by definition, consequences simply means "the result or effect of action or condition." Think about how you spend your time. Anything that consumes your time and attention enables consequences, both good and bad. Brian Tracy likes to say, "Failures spend the majority of their time in low-value, low-return consequence activities. Whereas successes spend the majority of their time in high-value, high-return consequence activities." That may sound obvious, but the fact remains that very few consider deeply the long-term value—the consequences—that will result from their present actions. BT goes further: "Successes will spend a great deal of time just thinking about which activities will yield the greatest consequences relative to their goals and ideals." MG and Jen's explore BT's observation and discuss the significance of spending time thinking about the activities that will yield the greatest results before engaging in them. Enjoy the episode!
