EP:178 | Aflatoxin and Corn: The Right and Wrong Way to Feed
This week we welcome Drs. Dwayne Elmore and Bronson Strickland to school us all on aflatoxin. Aflatoxins are produced by a couple of species of fungi in the genus Aspergillus that can appear in a variety of situations, and when ingested can be harmful to the very birds and mammals we cherish. Our expert guests thoroughly explain aflatoxin, practices we can follow to help prevent it, what to do if we discover molded feed, and then offer some feed solutions that can help. Anyone that feeds corn or uses feed based attractants needs to pay attention and be informed. Respect the science and the game we love. Listen, Learn and Be a Responsible Gamekeeper. EP:173 | Flint Knapping and Primitive Bows & Arrows
This week Will from @november_south teaches us about the art of flintknapping and building self-bows and arrows similarly to the way the Native Americans did. This talented craftsman amazes us with his arrowhead/knife building skills and thorough explanations of his processes. His award winning handmade bows are some of the most amazing hunting tools we’ve ever seen, and his tapered cane arrows fletched with turkey feathers and hafted with homemade stone points spin like high dollar carbons. We ask a bunch of questions and he has great answers. It’s impressive that Will successfully hunts with this gear that he builds, and he shares tips for getting deer within ten yards. As we close out, he demonstrates his musical talents as well. We all came away thinking that this is one of the most interesting podcasts we’ve done. Listen, Learn, Enjoy, and be Amazed! EP:172 | The Oyster is a Gamekeeper (Bonus Episode)
On this week’s bonus episode of the Gamekeeper Podcast, we re-hash a visit to the gulf coast near Corpus Christi, TX, where we helped document a team of researchers and volunteers as they successfully re-established new oyster reefs with recycled oyster shells. Dr. Jennifer Pollack, from the Texas A&M Harte Research Institute (HRI) in “Corpus,” and Pat Murray, the President of the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) joined in on the discussion. We also learn about the program being put on by HRI called Sink Your Shucks... "It's habitat forming." We learned there are many similarities between improving habitat on land and along our shorelines, and how easy it is to make a difference. There's more to come on this story! In November of this year, "The Oyster Project," produced by AFTCO and Mossy Oak will drop. We are looking forward to sharing this with you and helping spread the word about the good work that CCA and Texas A&M Corpus Christi is doing to improve the habitat of coastal waterways. We do a in depth discussion on what he has learned through his many years of planting food plots including: how he picks a site, the way he fertilizes, his thoughts on lime, and how he plants his plots. Hank has figured out a system that works for him, and we can all learn from his trials and errors. We ask him which states excite him the most for big deer, he tells about his favorite outdoor experience (which will put a lump in your throat), and he tells a hair raising story about being chased down by the Federales in Mexico. EP:153 | The Story of Avery Island, Tabasco and Wildlife Conservation.
This week Dr. Shane Bernard tells us the history of Avery Island in Louisiana, including fascinating stories about the conservation efforts of E. A. “Ned” McIlhenny (1872-1949), the son of TABASCO® Sauce inventor E. McIlhenny. As the story goes, this man single handedly saved the imperiled Snowy Egret by creating protected sanctuary on the island that by 1911, had a thriving population over 100,000 birds. E. A. also banded over 300,000 birds and waterfowl to learn their migration habits, along with authoring a book with Charles Jordan about wild turkeys. The 2200 acre island also is home to a subspecies of whitetail deer thought to only live on the island. Shane, an accomplished author himself, is the historian and curator for the McIlhenny family and the TABASCO brand, who shares some great stories with us. You’ll be surprised. This week we are honored to have Dr. Dana Morin, an Applied Population Ecologist with the Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab at the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State, sitting between the turkeys and explaining many facts about coyotes. We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren’t always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories? This week on the GameKeeper Podcast we’re excited to have finally had Kyle Lybarger and Jake Brown from The Native Habitat Project in the studio – where we covered as many bases as we could on native and non-native flora, wildlife habitat, burning, savannahs and other ecosystems, and more. We got downright philosophical and really “nerded out” on some cool topics, like: what did the landscape look like 500 years ago, and how can we achieve that look again, but what would be your modern tweaks?, and what if ole Smokey The Bear never entered the picture?. EP:133 | A Duck Hunter's Nightmare (Bonus Episode)
This week we get serious and hear a duck hunting story that came awfully close to having a bad ending. Like many of us want to do, Jason Cook found himself duck hunting during a major freeze up. When his dog fell through the ice on a long retrieve and couldn’t get out…like all of us would, he started to his dog in attempt to save him. It's a perilous situation and when Jason falls through the ice himself and can’t touch bottom, it gets even worse. We recorded this podcast hoping to remind duck hunters how dangerous things can get and what to do in case you find yourself in a bad situation. This is one you might want to share with a friend. Listen, Learn and Stay Safe. EP:132 | Calling Coyotes
This week we discuss the art of calling coyotes. Expert caller Jon Collins of FOXPRO joins us to explain the many calls and techniques he has learned through years of chasing the crafty critters. Ole Wiley is found in every area of the country, and as Gamekeepers we worry about our fawns and turkeys. We all knew they are formidable predators, but we learn they're susceptible to calling year round and it takes skill to regularly kill them. It’s an interesting discussion. By the way, do you pronounce it ki-yote or ki-yo-te? Listen, Learn and Enjoy. EP:131 | Arrowheads & Artifacts from the Original Gamekeepers
This week we welcome Jessica Crawford, an incredibly knowledgeable Archaeologist hailing from The Archaeological Conservancy, to discuss all things related to our Native American cultures spanning from thousands of years ago to present day. What type of tools did they use and how did they make them? What site types did they inhabit? Did they practice any type of gamekeeping similar to how we do it today? Where do I look for artifacts, and what is ethical and/or legal means of doing so, and how do I properly document them? What do I do if I find a “site” or “mound” on my property? We also shared a couple of stories about the dark side of artifact collecting. Jessica and her family come from a long line of hardcore hunters and farmers, making her a perfect fit for this discussion we’ve been wanting to have for quite some time.
