Gamekeeper Podcast

This week we have Dr. Steve Ditchkoff from Auburn University on to discuss the latest on the exploding feral pig population. He’s studied wild pigs extensively during his career and thinks they are the smartest critters on the landscape. How come we rarely see many wild pig road kills? Did you know De Soto brought over the first pigs in the 1500’s, yet they never exploded until the last 40 years. Why? He explains and we also talk meat, diseases, trapping, their sudden spread and how some states are handling them a bit differently. Steve explains the hope that the new toxicants have for the future. This week we are joined by entomologist Dr. Blake Layton from the Mississippi State Entomology Department to explain the Cicada phenomenon that’s is occurring. For the first time in 221 years, both 13 year and 17 year periodical cicadas will emerge from their underground lairs at the same time. In certain areas of the country the sounds of courtship will be deafening with millions of bugs per acre vying for a chance to reproduce. But what does it mean for the wildlife? This week with a joined by lifelong whitetail fanatic Doug Roberts, to discuss what he has learned through trials and errors to help Gamekeepers can grow healthier whitetails. Doug has some incredible insight into what it takes to grow a big whitetail and he surprised us with some of his answers. He also explained to us what he knew about the Mitch Rompola buck that was killed in Michigan back in 1998. It was said to be the largest typical ever killed and then faded from view just a quick. It’s a fascinating story. Last but not, he least he explains some hopeful news about ongoing research that has determined some deer could possibly have a gene making them resistant to CWD. On this episode we have an old school call designer, Mike Battey explains turkey vocalizations and why you should have a trumpet call in your vest. Mike was the first to use high tech recording equipment to study wild turkey sounds and his recordings are amazing acoustic experiences. He is also an expert on the mysterious turkey call called the trumpet and the wing bone call. This week we have a truly special guest in Mr. Benny Herring. Anybody that turkey hunts in Mississippi owes him a debt of gratitude, you see Mr. Herring was one of the first team of biologists that trapped and relocated wild turkeys across the state. During the late 1960’s through the early 80’s he was involved in over 90 cannon net captures and releases. His stories are fantastic and transport the listener back into time when there weren’t many turkeys or turkey hunters. The story of this small group of men, learning and perfecting their craft is one every turkey hunter needs to here. Similar stories were unfolding in many states and these Keepers of our Game were communicating best practices to help each other and the wild turkey. This week we share a podcast recorded recently at the NWTF national convention with none other than Dr. Bret Collier of LSU. Bret has been studying turkeys a long time and actually took part in the first GPS turkey study. He tells the story about how it all this got started at a bar with a drawing a sketch of the GPS unit on a napkin. Later he melts our minds as he explains his thoughts of raccoons and other so-called nest predators actually being nest scavengers. You might have to listen to this one twice for it to sink in while the take away is we need to continue our focus on habitat, but also step up our larger predator trapping skills. This week we’re AMAZED – and to be honest, we’re ENVIOUS of the 210 inch set of antlers brought in by Austin and Meghan Ashley. It’s one of the biggest and prettiest deer to ever be killed in the South. Meghan killed this deer in south Mississippi, and immediately after the photos hit social media a storm of rumors, negativity, and theories appeared amongst a few congrats. This week we are joined in studio by wild hog trapping experts Jack Robertson and Robbie Taylor of Big Pig Traps. Admittedly wild pigs can be fun to hunt, but they can destroy habitat and cause more damage to the ecosystem than can be quantified with dollars. We learn about how the pigs got here and how they were being moved around the landscape in the dark of the night. We discuss the different stances that states have and what seems to be working, along with what steps need to be taken to make sure they are safe table fare. Finally, the guys explain what they are best at; trapping pigs. They explain using high-tech “drop” traps, to simple wire panel pens with electric gates, to using a thermal scope and a good old fashioned late evening hunt to get that last pig. This week we really enjoyed the discussion with our in studio guests, Caroline Winters and William McKinley. Caroline recently graduated from Mississippi State and is working for the MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP), and William is the MDWFP Deer Program Coordinator for the whole state of Mississippi. Caroline recently killed a giant 190 inch typical, one that she and others had been watching and passing for at least three years. The story of Caroline and her husband and father, finding sheds, watching and passing the deer is a great one and illustrates the point of “let ‘em grow.” William helps explain the several curiosities about the buck, including that he should have died from a previous brain abscess, and goes on to help us better understand what it takes to grow a deer of this caliber. We ask a lot of questions and learn a lot about doe management, buck fawn displacement and why this year it seems more giants are hitting the ground. This week we are joined in studio by deer dog recovery expert Zach Crowley and his legendary tracking dog, Dayah (a beautiful black-mouthed Cur). We hope you never need one, but if you do it’s great to know there is a network of recovery dogs that can make the difference in recovering your deer. Zach explains what steps to take after a nominal shot, and how to get in touch with a blood trailing dog owner in your area. We also talk about how you can typically expect a wounded whitetail to behave, and the basics of how to train your own recovery dog. This week we talk squirrels with master caller and squirrel hunter Jeffrey Wood referred to by his friends as the Swamp Boy. He makes custom calls and he kills over 600 bushytails a year. He sits on the guest couch and he puts on a calling demonstration and explains how his style of still hunting the crafty critters. Jeffrey also has numerous state and the multiple world titles with his squirrel dogs. This guy KNOWS squirrels. This week we have a world famous musician, Mr. Chuck Leavell. While he’s been the keyboardist for The Rolling Stones for 40 years and now the musical director, he was also with the Allman Brothers in their heydays in the 70’s. There are too many more musical accolades to list. You may be wondering why we had him as a guest? Let us tell you – Chuck has a diverse chunk of land in central Georgia that he manages for wildlife, but he is also a vocal advocate for trees and sustainable forestry and has also authored several books on the subject. He has received numerous related awards including the National Tree Farmer of the year, and believe us, he is well versed when discussing the importance of trees and their management. It has been Dudley’s goal to have him on after watching the numerous PBS shows and the documentary “Chuck Leavell: The Tree Man.” It’s refreshing. With deer season now on the brain, we hit up one of our favorite mature buck nerds, Dr. Mike Chamberlain aka The Turkey Doc, for tips and tricks on improving the odds of harvesting mature bucks. Although Mike is widely known for his hands-on and scientific knowledge of all things Wild Turkey, he and his harem of hunting buddies and clients are luckier than most when it comes to actually harvesting the mature bucks they grow. One topic of discussion included tips for encouraging older bucks to set foot in food plots during daylight hours, including how they manage pressure and habitat in the vicinity to really set the scene. It’s not a huge feat anymore to grow and hold mature bucks, but harvesting them on a consistent basis is exponentially more difficult – and they’re doing it! Listen, Learn, and Enjoy.
