This week we are joined by a very special guest, 84-year-old Dr. Joe Bumgardner to discuss the intricate details of what actually causes the demise of a bow-shot deer. The many skinning shed autopsies he has performed has helped him diagnosis cause and correlate it with blood sign and the length of the blood trail. He has analyzed and explains all this to help bow hunters and gun hunters evaluate their hits and make smart decisions. Dr. Bumgardner also tells the story of his latest Mississippi buck named Houdini, a 175-inch monster typical. This week we have a very sobering podcast that everyone who hunts from an elevated stand could benefit from a listen. Did you know that one in three hunters will fall from a tree during their hunting career? Many of these accidents are life changing. We’re joined by two hunters who were in different seasons of their lives when they fell from tree stands. A seasoned older hunter, Tony Rossetti, fell before daylight when a wooden step gave away and he lay all day and wasn’t found until late afternoon. Mitch Dozier was a young man in his prime when a numb cold boot broke a limb as he stepped out of a lock-on and landed on his back, forever changing his life. We are joined by Dr. Curt Meine and Buddy Huffaker of the Aldo Leopold Foundation and our own Daniel Haas who has a fascination with the topic. We learn about Aldo’s early years, his interest in hunting and the journey of how he came to be known as the father of modern wildlife management while helping create awareness of environmental ethics. This week we have David Smith, the president of the Mississippi Dog Hunters Association, to discuss deer hunting with dogs. Chasing deer with dogs is a long lived tradition in the Deep South. Clubs exists that lease/hunt thousands of acres and turn out hundreds of dogs. We ask the obvious questions about traditions, how it started, how they operate, their strategy, do they try to manage their herds and of course, how they get along with neighbors that don’t dog hunt. On this bonus Dr. Steve Ditchkoff of Auburn University joins us to explain the phenomenon piebald deer. We’ve all either experienced one in the wild or seen a picture on social media. They can be odd looking deer with short legs, humped noses, noticeable overbite and they can also be beautiful animals with white colorations that range from just a few spots to almost total coverage. This week we’re joined by retired U.S. Fish and Wildlife wolf expert Ed Bangs who was appointed as the Wolf Recovery Coordinator in the mid ‘90’s. We were surprised to learn that wolves had the greatest natural range of any land mammal in the northern hemisphere with distribution seemingly everywhere at one point. They are an incredibly adaptable animal and hearing Ed explain the dynamics of the wolf pack is truly fascinating. He explains how wolves were feared, hated and eventually extirpated. Later wolves became a symbol to many people who have pushed to restore them. Obviously this reintroduction has created lots of issues. Ed does a great job of explaining wolves, why we have conflicts, where there are typically problems, where it works and some of the urban legends we have heard about wolves. This week we are joined by the unbelievably talented bowhunter Glenn Garner. Glenn manages the Jeff Foxworthy farm in Georgia and knows how to grow and kill big deer. To further prove the point, he has killed 26 Pope and Young qualifying animals with most coming from the property he manages. We have a great discussion about identifying and targeting specific bucks, rut parties, food plots and how to enter and exit a stands. He also explains his thoughts on killing momma doe early so she doesn’t disperse the buck fawns. This week we take a deep dive into understanding the physics of bows, arrows and broadheads. After losing a buck of a lifetime on a well-placed shot, guest Kenny Thompson spent years collecting data and researching how it all works together, and has developed a system that’s working great for him and his bow shop clients. Kenny takes a hard stance on his preferred fixed blade broadhead choice, and we agreed with much of what he said, but not necessarily all of it because there is also data to back up the effectiveness of quality mechanicals. Understanding that the bow and arrows need to be tuned for balance and for maximum efficiency to enhance penetration made so much sense to us. We talk down range arrow speed, tuning, balance, penetration, and also momentum. All this is discussed to explain where and why to try to hit a whitetail. Everybody should aspire to be an as effective as possible when a chance at a shot presents itself. This week we have an interesting in studio discussion on managing whitetails with biologist, and well-known bow hunter, Matt Brock. Matts worked for the states of Mississippi and Alabama and has seen a lot of habitat and ideas. We discuss trail cameras, bottomland versus upland habitat, coyotes and predator management, rainfall amounts and its effect on management practices, tried-and-true strategies he’s acquired over the years, managing expectations, and more. He also tells the story of how his dog, while blood-trailing a deer, got into Temik AND his inadvertent exposure to it while caring for his dog. Matt came very close to having a tragic ending. It’s a hard story for him to tell but we hope someone can learn from it. At the end, he pulls out a jungle carpet python and tells us about his love of reptiles. It’s a great discussion. This week we’re are joined in studio by Dr. Blake Grisham of Texas Tech and Courtenay Conring, a hardworking young biologist. These two and others have been working a long term research project on Sandhill Cranes. It’s a very interesting discussion and we learned so much. Most people don’t understand the various populations of cranes, their migration, pair bonding, parenting skills and how long lived they are. We did know that they are referred to as “ribeye in the sky” and it was confirmed they are in fact delicious. We also learned just how much fun they are to hunt and we were surprised to learn just how wary they are. Sandhill Cranes have a beautiful throaty call and once you have heard one it’s easy to recognize. This bonus episode we are joined by crow hunting expert and world class caller Sandy Brady. Imagine killing 8,000 crows a year and over 400 in one hunt! This week we learn about predator hunting with thermal equipment. Two excellent Louisiana outfitters who specialize in hunting pigs and coyotes with thermals at night join us to explain just how it’s done. It’s a fascinating discussion and we all learned that we all want to experience this unique hunt. We know first-hand how devastating pigs can be to a property, but these guys have found a way to keep the pressure on them and help their local farmers AND have FUN! If you have feral pigs in your area, there may be local farmers that would welcome you to help reduce their numbers. The trappers are using thermals and suppressors to clean up the pigs they can get in traps. This week we are joined by Natalie Krebs, Executive Editor at Outdoor Life. She recently traveled to Australia to learn about the anti-hunting movement that’s vigorously trying to stop duck hunting. We were fascinated to hear about how these groups operated. We’ve never encountered an anti-hunter during a hunt…have you? Her stories are shocking and we thought that every hunter should pay attention to this to understand and help prevent this from happening in our United States. Either through egregious actions during hunts or more discreet methods of changing laws (think California mountain lions and now attempting the same in Colorado), the anti’s are making efforts to shut down our way of life. They don’t understand conservation and how hunting plays an integral role in managing wildlife, while at the same time raising funds for the same animals and many others. On this week’s podcast Dr. Philip Lavretsky of UTEP and Dr. Brian Davis of Miss State University join us to explain the frightening scenario of the degradation of wild mallard genetics. Released “game farm” mallards were previously thought to not survive the winters, and certainly weren’t thought to be breeding with wild ducks. Turns out that’s not true as they are having an increasing genetic influence on the Atlantic flyway mallards and the phenomenon is moving west. All we have to do is look to Europe to see what could play out. This alarming story plus new information that Dr. Lavretsky explains has everyone worried about the future of our beloved greenheads. This week we’re joined in studio by World Champion Coyote caller Torry Cook of Arkansas. Torry, an obsessed hunter, has raised multiple coyote pup litters through the years in order to learn from them. You might wonder if raising pups has made him soft hearted towards them? Trust us, it hasn’t. It was totally a play to get knowledge and use it against them. It’s fascinating to hear him explain what he’s learned and how he applies that knowledge in terms of behavior and understanding vocalizations to improve his game. This week we have saltwater expert Tom Rowland on to discuss sharks and how they are affecting fishing. It seems social media is full of videos of sharks attacking many different species of hooked fish. It’s really sad to see a big tarpon or any other fish get targeted. This week we welcome Anthony Ballard the MDWFP Bear Coordinator and Dr. Dana Morin a carnivore expert from Mississippi State University to talk about the black bears of Mississippi. The Magnolia State has a long, historic tradition with black bears, dating back to when the Delta region was still massive old growth timber and full of bears! Then of course there is the infamous Theodore Roosevelt hunt that led to the creation of the Teddy Bear. We’ll look to the past, discuss the present and then look to the future in our conversation. It ends up being an interesting look at an often maligned animal that’s making a comeback against the odds and a chance to hear from the people that are dedicated to see it be successful. This week we have a very interesting discussion with author Erika Howsare, whose recent book, The Age of Deer, The Trouble and Kinship with Our Wild Neighbors recently caught our attention. It’s a fascinating look at the white-tailed deer and its relationship with man over time. She explains, “deer have been an essential part of human life for millennia and today our relationship is still intimate, yet full of contradictions: we hunt and protect them, we cull them in suburbs while mythologizing them as icons of the wilderness.” Erika didn’t grow up hunting and readily admits she was ambivalent about the whole process. However, through her research on deer and an open mind, she develops a very deep introspective into hunting, hunters, and our view of the world.
