EP:327 | Bonus: The Snow Goose Dilemma

This week, we are joined by a team of snow goose experts to help explain the changes occurring in the mid-continental snow goose population. Not too long ago, their numbers exploded—but now, they are trending in a troubling direction. Waterfowl biologists in the U.S. and Canada are working hard to understand what’s happening. It’s a problem not many people know about. Many of us, as hunters, are aware of the extended seasons aimed at reducing numbers—and the thrill of having thousands of geese spiral around, looking to land. It’s a hunter’s dream. But what does the future hold? Our guest experts—Dr. Mitch Weegman, Frank Baldwin, and Josh Dooley—explain what they know.Listen, learn, and enjoy.Send a text message to the show!Support the showStay connected with GameKeepers: Instagram: @mossyoakgamekeepers Facebook: @GameKeepers Twitter: @MOGameKeepersYouTube: @MossyOakGameKeepers Website: https://mossyoakgamekeeper.com/Enter The Gamekeeper Giveaway: https://bit.ly/GK_GiveawaySubscribe to Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Magazine Buy a Single Issue of Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Single_Issue Join our Newsletters: Field Notes - https://bit.ly/GKField_Notes | The Branch - https://bit.ly/the_branchHave a question for us or a podcast idea? EP:326 | Understanding Hunting Pressure on Turkeys

This week we’re joined by Dr. Brad Cohen of Tennessee Tech and the Cohen Lab. We discuss hunting pressure, gobbling activity and what they have learned through research and monitoring GPS banded gobblers and hunters. Brad participates in many research projects along with Drs. Mike Chamberlain and Bret Collier, and like them, he’s an avid turkey hunter and has really paid attention to the findings. We also talk turkey season dates and the thoughts so far on their effectiveness. Ever wondered how they count birds and establish limits? We touch on that. We also talk about avian predators having an effect on our turkeys. We think it’s a real thing. It’s an interesting discussion and one anyone interested in turkeys will appreciate. EP:325 | Bonus: Rabbits and Beagles!!

This week, we’re joined by KJ Britt—NFL football player and lifelong, obsessed rabbit hunter. It’s a refreshing change of pace as we hear how KJ, his father, and grandfather enjoy spending time together chasing rabbits and running dogs. With around thirty beagles and a strong desire to hunt every chance they get, their passion is clear. We ask plenty of questions about hunt strategies, jump dogs, lingo, and whether a property managed for deer also makes great habitat for rabbits. We also touch on the fact that fewer people chase rabbits than in the past—and how they’re missing out on a lot of excitement. It’s a fun one. EP:304 | Spring Longbeards with Dave Owens of The Pinhoti Project

This week we are joined by one of our favorite guests, Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project. Dave is a renowned traveling turkey hunter who obsesses over the details and is one of our favorite guests. We decided to ask him questions that he rarely gets asked in an effort to learn something new. How does he prepare for weeks of reduced sleep? He explains his filming set up to help listeners film their own hunts, we talk woodsmanship skills and how they paint a picture of what’s occurring, how he keeps up with the many different turkeys he is aware of, how environmental factors affect the sound of a gobble, how he anticipates what’s going to happen—allowing him to prepare—and how there is something therapeutic about the spring woods. EP:301 | (Timely Classic EP:138) So You Think You Know Coyotes?

On this timely classic episode (EP:190) we are honored to have Dr. Dana Morin, an Applied Population Ecologist with the Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab at the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State, sitting between the turkeys and explaining many facts about coyotes. We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren’t always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories? Her vast amount of research into their habits and habitat allow her to provide us some serious insight. We learn it all and more. Listen, Learn and Enjoy! EP:294 | How Hunting Pressure Affects Waterfowl Movement

This week, we’re talking ducks with Dr. Brad Cohen from Tennessee Tech and expert duck hunter Jim Ronquest (Drake Waterfowl.) Brad is a very interesting biologist who wants to learn about how hunting pressure affects waterfowl movements, and his study will amaze you. His group is banding ducks with GPS monitors and studying how pressure makes the ducks move, where they want to go and how long they stay. Jim Ronquest many years of duck hunting experience gives him a great perspective on the study’s findings. Where are the ducks? Why don’t we see as many as we think we should? This week we have Dan Moultrie and Mark Olis in the studio for a deep discussion around the many effects of the drought. EP:282 | Bonus: Stabbed by a Broadhead

This week, we are captivated by Dr. Robbie Godwin’s harrowing account of his recent elk hunting accident where a broadhead pierced his chest. Alone on a remote New Mexico mountain without cell service and a malfunctioning handheld radio, Robbie was forced to be both the patient and the doctor. Faced with life-altering decisions—should he risk pulling out the broadhead and severe bleeding, wait four hours for his outfitter to reach him at dark or try to walk out for help?—this story is a gripping reminder that accidents happen in an instant. It’s a tale of faith, love for family, calm under pressure, and the importance of preparation. Listen, Learn, and Enjoy. Send a text message to the show! EP:281 | Bow Hunting a 216-Inch Typical Buck

This week, we’re joined by bow hunter Tommy Allen of Ohio, who recently harvested a once-in-several-lifetimes buck—a 216-inch typical giant he named Zeus. Tommy shares the incredible story and history behind this legendary deer, from passing on him a year earlier to give him time to grow, to dealing with neighbors hunting him, and Zeus becoming camera-shy and shifting his home range. We were captivated by Tommy’s determination, patience, and ability to stay calm when it mattered most. It’s an inspiring story filled with lessons that every hunter can apply. EP:280 | Bonus: Understanding Silencers with Silencer Central’s Brandon Maddox

This week we dive into the process of acquiring a suppressor/silencer. Brandon Maddox, the Founder of Silencer Central, joins us to explain trusts vs individual purchases, the new improved process and much more. We love the idea of reducing noise pollution on our farms and the silencer seems like a perfect tool to help a Gamekeeper when harvesting does. Squirrel hunters swear by them. Adults and especially kids can benefit from the reduced decibel exposure and recoil. They just make sense. We learned a lot from the conversation and were impressed with Brandon’s desire to make sure wildlife conservation benefits from the process. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.
