Ep 75EP:75 | The Brassica Discussion
With temperatures across the whitetails range plunging and food sources depleting, we worry about deer herds being hungry and stressed. This week on the Gamekeepers podcast we talk about late season food plots, specifically Brassicas commonly known as turnips, rape, kale and radishes. These unique cultivars have long been a workhorse component in the BioLogic food plot blends, and we explain why we have love them so much. Dr. Bronson Strickland from the MSU Deer Lab joins us to explain what they have learned through research. Food plots are an important part of managing wildlife, and we give you some great information to help make better decisions. Listen, Learn and be a better Gamekeeper. Enjoy! This week Dr. Marcus Lashley of the UF Deer Lab joins us to talk about burning. We discuss when, why, what equipment and permits you need, and we try to demystify a management tool that many are leery of incorporating into their annual practices. Marcus is brilliant at explaining the process. Of course, Toxey, our own self-admitted pyro, joins the discussion but first tells the story of Mr. Fox's latest buck, (a big 11 point) that you don’t want to miss. Ep 71EP:71 | Fishing Is Hunting
With temps hovering around freezing or colder in most of the country, we decided to shift gears this week and think about warmer climes and fishing adventures. World class tarpon guide, Craig Brewer, joined us to deer hunt recently. While he was in town we sat him down to explain what’s going on with the water quality of the Everglades and the Florida Keys. As Gamekeepers, we need to pay attention to what’s happening. Of course we also talk fishing/hunting, and we all learn a lot from a man who was born to be a tarpon guide. Craig and his father were the first, and for many years, the only father/son to both win the prestigious Gold Cup of Tarpon Fishing as guides. The man is legendary, and his knowledge and insight is invaluable. Listen and learn. Ep 70EP:70 | For The Love of Squirrels
For most of us, thoughts of squirrel hunting conjures up memories of early hunting experiences. But there are many serious squirrel hunters who use specialized .22 rifles with silencers and or insanely valued dogs that will amaze at what they can do. Squirrels are nature’s athletes and world class hiders that will put your camo and hunting skills to the test. This week our guest is George Brown, legendary squirrel hunter who typically harvests upwards of 400 bushytails a year. We talk squirrels and we all learn from him. It’s guaranteed to make you want to go and lean against a tree. Listen and learn. Ep 64EP:64 | The Ins & Outs of Processing Deer Meat
This week on The Gamekeeper Podcast we dig deep into the world of processing venison from two different angles. First, Brad Lockwood joins us on the phone to discuss “harvest to freezer” from a DIY standpoint. Brad has been a very prominent name in the DIY processing biz for years, and we spent time gleaning ideas and techniques from him including aging meat. Next up is Chris Herring, a well-respected local game meat processor, who joins us in the studio. Chris clears the air by answering a few touchy questions we’ve always wanted to ask, like “how do I know I’m getting my own deer back,” but also talks about some specialty products that can be made, packaging options, and others. This one was very educational, but we still managed to get a few laughs in as well. This week we discuss deer hunting and guest Terry Drury, after telling the story of his largest buck to date and leaving everyone’s jaw on the floor, he provides a data dump of information that had everyone taking notes. Terry’s analogy of pre-rut and rut tactics, along with moon phases and temperatures was something serious deer hunters need to hear. Our second guest, Dave Nebraska of Mossy Oak, tells the story of his recent giant bow kill in Ohio, and lastly Bobby asks everyone about their favorite hunting gear. We loved this one. Ep 58EP:58 | What To Consider When Setting Up A Deer Stand
This week on the Gamekeeper Podcast, we discuss what you need to be considering prior to setting up your deer stand(s) to target a particular deer. We cover hang-ons, shooting houses, ground blinds, and ladder stands- but more specifically where to put them to avoid detection and maximize success. Ep 37EP:37 | The Reelfoot Lake Tragedy
In late January, the duck hunting community was shocked when the news broke out of Reelfoot Lake that two duck hunters had been killed, and a manhunt for the alleged killer was underway. Rumors ran rampant, especially when the body of the suspect was recovered. Now that the dust has settled, we've learned the truth is different than what rumors led most hunters to believe. But the murders still leave many unanswered questions. The Gamekeeper Podcast welcomes Outdoor Life Senior Deputy Editor Natalie Krebs, who interviewed the only witness, and other Reelfoot hunters, to write a very compelling story of the events that occurred that fateful day. A GoFundMe has been set up for the families and funeral expenses of the two men who were killed. To donate, click here. Ep 35EP:35 | Successful U.S. Turkey Slam with Jason Hart
This week we welcome our good friend Jason Hart of Nomad Outdoor, to discuss the recent completion of the U.S. Slam where he killed a turkey in all 49 states they inhabit. With a Mississippi bird being the final chapter, Jason and Neill Haas brilliantly drop the long beard on our studio’s table, and then share hunting stories from his US turkey slam. It’s interesting to learn what all went on behind the scenes to make this monumental event occur. We also test his camouflage knowledge with a quiz on the original bottomland pattern- and you’ll never guess what popular movie inspired Jason to get into hunting. Enjoy!
